14 best ski poles
Ski Poles are essential equipment in downhill skiing and are used by skiers to aid in balance, stability, and propulsion while skiing down slopes. They play a crucial role in helping skiers maintain control, navigate turns, and provide support during various skiing maneuvers. Here are some key aspects related to ski poles and their role in winter sports:
Materials: Ski poles are typically made from lightweight and durable materials such as aluminum, carbon fiber, or a combination of both. The choice of material affects the pole's weight and stiffness.
Length: The length of ski poles can vary depending on the type of skiing and personal preference. Generally, for downhill skiing, the poles should reach to your chin or just below. Longer poles can provide more stability in deep snow, while shorter poles are suitable for slalom skiing.
Grip: Ski pole grips are usually made of rubber or foam and are designed to provide a comfortable and secure hold. Some grips have adjustable straps that loop around the skier's wrists to prevent the loss of the poles during a fall.
Baskets: The baskets at the bottom of ski poles help prevent them from sinking too deep into the snow. They come in various sizes, with larger baskets being suitable for deep powder snow, and smaller baskets for groomed slopes.
Shaft: The shaft of a ski pole can be straight or slightly curved, depending on the intended use. Downhill ski poles typically have straight shafts for better control and stability.
Technique: Ski poles are used in various skiing techniques. In downhill skiing, skiers use them to help initiate turns, maintain balance, and provide support while absorbing shocks from uneven terrain. In cross-country skiing, poles are used for propulsion along with a diagonal stride technique.
Safety: Ski poles can also serve as a safety tool. Skiers can use them to probe for hidden obstacles, create a barrier in deep snow to prevent sinking, or help in self-arrest during a fall on steeper terrain.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of ski poles is essential for their longevity. This includes checking for bent shafts, ensuring that grips and straps are secure, and periodically replacing worn-out baskets.
Customization: Skiers often customize their ski poles to suit their specific needs and preferences. This may involve adjusting the length, grip style, or choosing poles with specific features like shock-absorbing mechanisms.
In summary, ski poles are fundamental equipment in downhill skiing and other winter sports, serving both practical and safety-related purposes. Skiers should carefully select their ski poles based on their skill level, skiing style, and the type of terrain they plan to tackle.

The Scott Junior Hero ski poles are a fantastic choice for young skiers who are looking to rule the whole mountain. Ski poles serve a very meaningful function in the sport of skiing, one which is all-too often overlooked. The hands are a cornerstone of skiing, this is where your balance starts. If your poles are uncomfortable for your hands, or are too long, thick, or heavy, you'll end up in the back seat, and in the sport of skiing, the back seat is not where you want to be. Thanks to the light S3 Aluminum alloy shaft, the Scott Junior Hero poles are a fantastic combination of light weight and stiffness. The 14 mm shaft diameter is narrow enough to mitigate some wind resistance, making it easier for you to keep your hands in a proper and forward position. If your hands are forward, there's a good chance your shin is in the front of your boot, and this is where balance and power come from. Atop the pole, the Junior Joystick Grip is the ideal choice for young kids, as they're able to translate their video game skills into the ski world. If they feel like they're holding a joystick and playing a game, their levels of fun in the sport will go off the charts. Keeping your hand and wrist secure to the pole is the junior adjustable strap which keeps you nice and snug to the grip. Junior skiers will love the sharp good looks and quality performance of the Scott Junior Hero Poles.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would these be ok for kids? Ages 5, 7 and |
Answer: | the “original scent” Coast is what we purchased and received. Crazy that they are charging so much more and can’t find it in the stores anymore...this is the only soap my husband will use. |
Question: | Can I hike with them through rivers? Can these get wet |
Answer: | They are feathers. Luckily very few quills come through. |
Question: | How long are the poles at their shortest? Will they fit in my suitcase |
Answer: | It's a very thick topper, one of the thickest I've found. At least 6 inches, perhaps more at full inflation. A very fine featherbed that fluffs back to full easily, and stays for a good long time. |
Question: | Do the new Trailbuddy screw-on rubber tips screw on to these poles? The pictures don't show a lower set of threads on the tips |
Answer: | It may be about 5" high before you lay on it. Having said that I really like this featherbed. It's very comfortable, more so than the memory foam mattress topper it replaced, and I would buy it again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much do the poles weigh |
Answer: | These poles are so light that you will hardly know you are holding them. Love ‘em! |
Question: | Are the baskets notched so two poles can be attached to each other for carrying |
Answer: | No. The poles have powder baskets that won't attach to the other pole. |
Question: | Can the grips be removed so that you can cut the poles to customize their length |
Answer: | The grips are not removable. If you can't find the right length on Amazon. You could check Ziplines website for other sizes. |
Question: | Will these poles be used with Leki hand guards |
Answer: | I may not the best guy to answer this, however I am a professional ski coach, provide equipment advisements daily, and I have a pair of the Blurr poles, and have had many pairs of Leki SL and GS Race poles. Most of the Leki's have an elliptical shaped shaft of either aluminum or composite, and I believe that the hand guards are molded to that elliptical shape where they attach to the pole, they may or may not be able to fit to the Blurr standard circumference of 16mm, also Leki has a different type of attachment system at the top which is unique to their brand over any other brand of race pole, that top part is also unlikely to fit to any other brand of pole. The Zipline Blur model is more of a super durable carbon all mountain, big mountain freeski pole with a mid-size basket which is great for powder and still a light swing weight for pipe and park. Olympic Half-Pipe Gold medalist David Wise, trimmed down his basket to more of a "race" size to for lighter swing weight FYI. HOWEVER... Zipline sells a carbon race pole with hand guards, in a thinner faster 14mm shaft (Blurr is 16mm for higher durability in falls body impacts, soft snow sink stress etc). you might be thinking one could not feel the 2mm difference but trust me you can if racing slalom etc. I know this doesnt provide you an exact answer, but hopefully it is of some help. I will add that I love my Blurr poles, best poles ever, and half of that is the grip shape and strap which they did a really excellent job with and offer much better support than the 4 other brands of poles I had around... If you are wanting the BLurr style all mountain basket, but also wish to occasionally pound some race gates, I would contact zipline, they could offer you a pair of hand guards and possibly squeez fit to the Blurr, for sure there are other aluminum pole companies that make guards that fit to a 16mm shaft. |
- U.S. SKI TEAM OFFICIAL SUPPLIER - Used by the best: Designed for skiers of all abilities, Zipline is the choice of 2018 Olympic Gold Medalist David Wise, and other Olympic and World Cup athletes. The 14.0mm Lollipop poles are more forgiving in flex than the Zipline Podium or Blurr models and were created for the park, pipe, or freeskier. They are super light, have a great feel, and come in a variety of vibrant colors to match your skis.
- GRAPHITE CARBON COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY - Makes them super light & durable: Lightweight graphite-carbon technology replaces the outdated aluminum of most ski poles, resulting in a pole that reduces vibration with every pole plant, is lightweight, and durable to provide effortless swing weight.
- “ZIP TOUCH” DUAL DENSITY GRIP - Improved non-slip grip for a better feel: Our signature “trigger finger” ZipGrip is built with thermoplastic (TPU) and contours to your hand, preventing your gloves from slipping.
- ZIP STRAPS - Streamlined straps: Easily adjustable on the fly and for the perfect fit with no plastic buckles flying around!
- CARBIDE ZIP TIP - Tough and sharp: With teeth, allows for precise pole plants and secured grip - in any condition!
User questions & answers
Question: | I’m 5’2” and would like to use these with rollerblades. What length of pole should I get? Thank you |
Answer: | Put your rollerblades on and then stand straight and put your forearms parrrall to the ground and measure the distance from the bottom of your hand to the ground that is the correct length of pole to order |
Question: | At 6 foot how long should my pulse be |
Answer: | 50" if you are a calm skier, if you're aggressive, have a lower stance or like the terrain park go with a 48" |
Question: | Help.how do u no your ski pole size? I m new to the sport.and im 5'4 in height |
Answer: | Of course this varies a bit based on personal preference...my daughter is 5’6 and used a 110cm set of poles which worked well for her. You may try just slightly shorter...there is another method that I have seen where you stand straight holding your arms to the side and bend your elbows so that your lower arm is perpendicular to the ground...then have someone measure the distance to the ground using that as the length for the poles. I used that as a guideline when I ordered. The 3 sets that I ordered were about right but if anything I would err on the side of adding slightly to that measurement (especially if you are not wearing ski boots when you measure). |
Question: | Im 5' 2" what length should i get |
Answer: | I AM 5'6" I bought 44". so with your ski boots on, hold your hand at 90*(right angle at your elbow) at your side. 40" or 42" will be close. measure to the top of your hand. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When straps are on does it have a pad in between the skis to keep them from rubbing |
Answer: | Hi! Great question - We have designed the strap to prevent the skis from rubbing during transportation. If tightened properly our neoprene grip will keep your skis safe and secure. |
Question: | Will this fit in my ski jacket pocket |
Answer: | Great question, however, this depends on your ski jacket pocket size. All jackets we have tested had no issue fitting the full band when folded in a compact way, some had a tighter fit than others. We have tested and asked people wearing the following brands and they confirmed a perfect fit. Helly Hansen Alpha, Patagonia, The North Face ThermoBall, Patagonia Rubicon and Columbia Bugaboo as well as a handful of Spyder and Northface models. We hope this helps but if you find that your having trouble storing this in your jacket pocket, just shoot us an email and we will provide you with a solution. Enjoy the slopes! |
Question: | I have 100mm waist width skis with a rocker profile, will this strap fit them |
Answer: | Hey there, our ski straps support all ski waist widths between 6" / 152mm - 2" / 50.8mm. Hope this helps :) Best, Sam Founder & Product Designer Sklon |
Question: | Do these straps work for both adults and kids? Curious about sizing. Thank you |
Answer: | Thanks for asking, our straps have the ability to adjust in length to accommodate both kids and adults. If the minimum length of 23" is still too long, simply spread the straps further apart on the skis then strap on the shoulder. Enjoy the slopes! Best, Sam Sklon Founder & Product Designer |
