Answer:	You can adjust them tighter, but that would just hurt the bearing over time. I got them for my six year old and he has had a year of ice skating but this is his first time rollerblading. They were not scary for him. You can basically walk with them if you need to. Just make sure to wear protective gear and it would be great for a young kid.

They do need to be tight enough so the wheels don't fall off during riding. - To adjust the size please press and hold the white button on the side of the skate, pull the shoes to the length as you need then release the button to lock it on.
