14 best spd pedals
SPD pedals, which stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, are a type of bicycle pedal system commonly used in cycling, particularly in mountain biking and road cycling. These pedals are designed to provide a secure connection between the cyclist's feet and the bike, allowing for efficient power transfer and control. Here's what you should know about SPD pedals:
Clipless Pedal System: SPD pedals are part of a clipless pedal system. Despite the name, "clipless" pedals actually involve clipping your cycling shoes into the pedals using cleats, providing a secure and efficient connection. This is in contrast to older toe clip and strap systems.
Cleats: To use SPD pedals, cyclists need compatible cycling shoes with SPD cleats attached to the soles. These cleats have a two-bolt pattern that matches the design of SPD pedals. When you step on the pedal, the cleat engages with the pedal mechanism, allowing you to pedal effectively and stay connected to the bike.
Efficiency: SPD pedals are favored by many cyclists for their efficiency. They enable a consistent and controlled pedal stroke, which can enhance power transfer and overall cycling performance. The connection also allows for pulling up on the pedal during the upstroke, making pedaling more efficient.
Adjustability: Most SPD pedals offer adjustable tension settings, allowing riders to customize the amount of force required to release the cleat from the pedal. This feature is especially important for riders who want to balance security and ease of disengagement.
Types: There are various types of SPD pedals designed for specific cycling disciplines. For example, mountain bike SPD pedals often have a smaller cleat and a recessed design to make walking easier when off the bike. Road cycling SPD pedals are typically larger and offer a larger contact area for maximum power transfer.
Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that your cycling shoes are compatible with the specific type of SPD pedals you intend to use. Additionally, some manufacturers have their own variations of clipless pedal systems, so be sure to match shoes and pedals accordingly.
Maintenance: Like any bicycle component, SPD pedals require regular maintenance. This includes keeping the pedal mechanisms clean, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting the cleats for wear.
Safety: While clipless pedals offer many advantages, they can also take some getting used to, as riders need to practice disengaging from the pedals quickly in case of a fall or emergency. Novice riders should practice in a controlled environment to become comfortable with the system.
In summary, SPD pedals are a popular choice among cyclists for their efficiency and power transfer capabilities. They are an integral part of the clipless pedal system, and when paired with compatible cycling shoes, they offer a secure and efficient connection between the rider and the bike. Different types of SPD pedals are available to suit various cycling disciplines and preferences.

About Shimano
In 1961, a 3-speed bicycle hub displayed at the New York Toy Show was the catalyst for what would eventually become Shimano American Corporation. The popularity of 20-inch wheeled bikes with hi-rise handle bars fueled a demand for multi-speed hubs and Shimano was producing an affordable and reliable version that caught the attention of the industry. So much so, that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano, the youngest son of the company founder in Japan, opened an office in New York to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts.
Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, the goals are the same: to ensure that Shimano always has a listening ear to provide feedback on relevant trends and needs of the North American market for both bicycle and fishing products and make those a reality for customers.

Product description
The Shimano M540 shares many of the upsides of the XTR-grade M959 mountain bike pedal at a fraction of the cost. It has an open binding mechanism to make clipping in easier than ever, and its weight blows away all of its competitors in its price range. And with the M540 there is no better value when it comes to shedding mud and debris. Its chrome-moly spindle and low maintenance sealed bearing cartridge axle gives it serious durability. If you ride a road bike, why should you consider the M540 instead of a set of Dura-Ace pedals? The cleats of the M540 are small so they recess flush with the tread on the bottom of your shoes. With recessed cleats you can walk to your heart's content without having to worry about slipping and sliding on your cleats and making a racket as your plastic cleats click-clack on the ground. These pedals are two-sided, too, so clipping in and out at a stop light is a breeze. If you plan on making walking a significant part of your daily riding habits, a mountain bike pedal is ideal -- even if your only bike is a road bike! Road bikes equipped with mountain bike pedals are a common sight around here.
