9 best bicycle handlebars

Bicycle handlebars are a crucial component of a bike's steering system and play a significant role in controlling and maneuvering the bicycle. Here's what you should know about bicycle handlebars:

  1. Types of Bicycle Handlebars:

    • Drop Bars: These handlebars have a distinctive curved shape and are commonly found on road bikes. They offer multiple hand positions for varying riding postures, including a low, aerodynamic position for speed.
    • Flat Bars: Flat handlebars are straight across and typically found on mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and city bikes. They provide a more upright riding position and better control in technical terrain.
    • Riser Bars: These handlebars have a slight upward sweep at the ends, providing a more upright and comfortable riding position, commonly found on mountain bikes.
    • Aero Bars: Aero bars are extensions that can be added to drop bars for a highly aerodynamic position, primarily used in time trial and triathlon racing.
    • Bullhorns: Bullhorn handlebars have a simple, straight design with extensions at the ends for multiple hand positions. They are often seen on urban and fixed-gear bikes.
    • Dropped Bullhorns: These combine elements of drop bars and bullhorns, offering a more aerodynamic riding position with multiple handholds.
  2. Handlebar Materials:

    • Aluminum: Most handlebars are made of aluminum due to its lightweight and durable properties.
    • Carbon Fiber: High-end road bike handlebars are often made from carbon fiber, which is even lighter but more expensive.
    • Steel: Some classic or touring bikes may have steel handlebars for their strength and durability.
  3. Width and Reach:

    • Handlebars come in different widths to accommodate various riding styles and rider preferences. Wider bars provide better stability and control, while narrower bars offer a more aerodynamic position.
    • Reach refers to the horizontal distance from the center of the handlebar to the furthest point out.It affects the bike's overall fit and comfort.
  4. Grips and Tape:

    • Handlebars are typically covered with grips (on flat bars) or handlebar tape (on drop bars). These provide a comfortable and non-slip surface for the rider's hands.
  5. Stem Compatibility:

    • The stem is the component that connects the handlebars to the bike's fork steerer tube. Ensure that your handlebars and stem have compatible clamp diameters.
  6. Handlebar Accessories:

    • Accessories like bar ends (common on flat bars), lights, bells, and smartphone mounts can be added to handlebars to enhance functionality and safety.
  7. Handlebar Angle:

    • The angle at which the handlebars are positioned can be adjusted to suit the rider's comfort and riding style.
  8. Handlebar Sizing:

    • Selecting the right handlebar size is important for comfort and control. It should match your shoulder width and riding style.
  9. Riding Style Considerations:

    • Your choice of handlebars should align with your riding style and the type of terrain you plan to tackle. Drop bars are ideal for road cycling, while flat bars are better suited for off-road and urban riding.

In summary, bicycle handlebars come in various shapes and materials to cater to different riding styles and preferences. Selecting the right handlebars can greatly impact your comfort, control, and overall riding experience on your bicycle.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this handlebar matte black or shiny black
Answer: it's more matte then shiny but it does have some smoothness to the matte finish making it a little more reflective then a straight matte finish imo
Question: Will this fit a full suspension 29er MTB
Answer: Hi, If I understand your question correctly, the best way to know is to DETERMINE THE SIZE OF YOUR (HANDLEBAR) STEM CLAMP. The DIAMETERS could range from 22.xmm to 35mm. I think today's most common size is probably 31.8mm. The number may be printed or etched on your STEM. If not, the DIAMETER number may be printer or etched on your handlebar. If you can't find it, check with the bike manufacturer, bike retailer, or person that sold that bike. If none of those work, you should take the bike to a local bike shop to determine the size for you. Hope this helps. Cheers and good luck!
Question: what is rise
Answer: I estimate 3.5-5”, depending on how one rotates them once they are in place.
Question: What's the bar diameter toward the ends of the bar
Answer: 25mm or 1". This is typical for any type of handlebar.
Question: To what angle are the handles swept back when horizontal; (difficult to see in isometric picture)? [0=mtb; 90=racer]
Answer: They are almost parallel to the centerline of the bicycle. They are just like the old fashioned handlebars.I have had them a couple of years and like them a lot.
Question: How far do they sweep back? I mean, how long is it from center clamp to end of the bar? Thanks
Answer: Scott,From the center of the clamp to the end of the handlebars is approximately 7 1/2 inches.I hope this helps.
Question: How much of a rise do they have? Thanks for info
Answer: With the handles parallel to the ground, the top of the handles is about 3" higher than the top of the middle section. If you tilt them up in back, the rise will be more. These were by far the best I found for more upright riding.
Question: Clamp diameter
Answer: Looks like 25.4mm on my cheap calipers...
Question: are these bars satin or gloss black? are they knurled at the headset mounting spot
Answer: Yes they are high gloss black and they are knurled
Question: If i go from brahma style handle bars on a beach cruser how likely would it be that i have to change the cables on the brakes and shifter
Answer: It depends on what type of cruiser you have, first measure how long your brake and shift cables are, then measure the height of the new bars that you are getting, if you come up To short, then you need to buy new cables, if you don’t know how to do it, take it to a bike shop, and they will do everything for you, installation on cables and new bars, that’s what I did, came out perfect, hope this will help you, Levi, plus you need to buy handle bars shims
Question: will these work on a gas mini bike
Answer: I don't see why not. As long as they fit in the stem, they can be used. I needed shims for my cruiser, and now it looks and feels great!
Question: Is the hand grip area pretty much perpendicular to the bike? My entire objection is to not have to angle my wrist to grip the bars
Answer: I would say they sit at a natural angle for the wrist to rest at, maybe 6° or so back. Dead straight actually puts your wrist at an uncomfortable angle, as my lowrider bike apehangers bars are straight. I prefer these bars.
Question: would these be able to be mounted to a stock 1994 Nishiki Cornice
Answer: It's a standard handlebar- I see no reason for concern regarding make or model.
Question: Will this take a weld
Answer: A magnet sticks to it, so yeah...
Question: Will this work with roadmadter
Answer: I believe the diameter of these handlebars are the same on a Roadmaster mountain bike.
Question: Will this take a weld
Answer: The add for these says they are made from steel. So, you should be able to weld onto them using steel welding equipment. They might be heat treated, and if so, a large weld could change the heat treatment.

User questions & answers

Question: How long is the hand grip portion of the handle bar? I need 6 inches to fit the hand brake mount and hand grip
Answer: It is 5 3/4 inches from the end of the bar to the very beginning of the curved radius. The grips I have are 4 1/8 inches measured from inside the grip and the brake pull fits with room to spare. Maybe you could trim the grip just a little?
Question: If I have a clammp that is 7/8 [22.2 in mm], can this fit
Answer: To use these bars, you must get a 1" 25.4mm clamp or bore your smaller clamp out. There are other 7/8" bars available - https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-D-Cruiser-Handlebar-32-Black/dp/B002I7O5YA/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1499994880&sr=1-1-fkmr1&keywords=7%2F8%22%2Bhi-rise%2Bhandlebars&th=1
Question: How thick are the handle bars? Also my grip and break together is 6 inches will it fit
Answer: Not sure how thick, they are pretty strong as I have fallen a few times they didn't break. Not sure about grips I would say they are shorter than 6 inches
Question: does this fit a regular one speed cruiser bike
Answer: A one speed cruiser is usually fitted with a universal "gooseneck" type head set. I installed mine a bike with a similar type.

Question: What is the weight of the 780 bars
Answer: 11.29 oz according to the manufacture. I do know they seem pretty light to me when I installed them.
Question: Does mine have a adjustable stem
Answer: Not sure what the question is. It's a handlebar. You can put an adjustable stem.
Question: Will this fit older mongoose bikes 26.in
Answer: You can get a new stem to fit the bar. 31.8 mm is the diameter of the bar where it attaches to the stem. So you need to get a stem that works with that handlebar. Your old bike has a 1 inch steerer tube.
Question: How much should i torque it during install
Answer: The torque spec might be indicated on the handlebar stem (the clamp), not the bar. Try looking there. If not, you probably want something around 5Nm. For the most part, just snug it up evenly until the bar won't move. There is no need to over do it.
Question: What is the angle of the sweep on these bars
Answer: Looks to be about 30 degrees
Question: What color is the handle bar
Answer: Color is a semi gloss black.
Question: what is the clamp size? product states 25.4 but one of the reviews says it's 31.8 (which is more common anyway
Answer: This bar is available in both 25.4 and 31.8 clamp sizes. I have both. Please read specs carefully to be sure you are ordering the correct size for your bike.
Question: Can the seller please tell us what clamp size this bar is? pictures show both 25.4 and 31.8, and customers have received both sizes
Answer: I'm not the seller but I ordered and received the 25.4 for my bikes.

Answer: about 3cm
Question: Can these handlebars be cAre they durable, can they withstand extreme mountain biking?ut short? What is the shortest distance that can cut a knife
Answer: It has a slight swept back design. Great bar!
Question: where are these manufactured
Answer: Definitely a good buy if you are currently trying to do wheelies without a handlebar. I find having something to hold on to and simultaneously getting a little pull up on the front wheel makes for a much easier and safer rear wheel ride. Of course, your mileage may vary but be sure to wear a helmet just in case.
Question: The size choices indicate a 720 and a 780mm. What is the difference between those two selections
Answer: No, the rise is 5.25". I had to ponder this one a bit, but I think if you lay it on a table, it's 3" high. That's where the 3" comes from.

User questions & answers

Question: Where those handlebars fit on my grandsons ‘’16’’ magma bmx bike
Answer: Probably too wide for a 16" wheeled bike. This is meant for a 20"+
Question: I have a Schwinn 700c Varsity road bike. Will these bars fit that stem
Answer: Yes
Question: can these be used to replace 18spd mountain bike bars? (will the gear selects mount
Answer: I would think so. But these are smaller that regular mountain bike handlebars. These would work on a bmx for example and a fixie. I have them in a fixie.
Question: what is the width
Answer: Width is 22.75". Depending on your setup you may want to chop a quarter to half inch of each end. Something important to note: Unfortunately I miss quoted myself in my og review. These bars are def for FGSS geometries. They won't fit bmx stems. Clamp size is too big.
