14 best gravity bike

A gravity bike is a specialized type of mountain bike designed for downhill or gravity racing. It is optimized for descending steep and rugged terrain, and it's commonly used in downhill mountain biking competitions and events. Here are some key points about gravity bikes:

  1. Purpose: Gravity bikes are specifically built for downhill riding, where the rider relies on gravity to propel the bike downhill at high speeds. These bikes are not intended for pedaling uphill or cross-country riding.

  2. Frame Design: Gravity bikes have a distinctive frame design characterized by longer wheelbases, slack head tube angles, and substantial suspension systems. These features provide stability and control when descending steep and technical trails.

  3. Suspension: Most gravity bikes are equipped with full suspension systems, which include both front and rear shocks. These shocks help absorb impacts and maintain traction on rough terrain, ensuring a smoother ride and better control.

  4. Braking System: Gravity bikes are equipped with powerful disc brakes to provide the necessary stopping power when navigating steep descents.Hydraulic disc brakes are common due to their reliability and consistent performance.

  5. Tires: The tires on gravity bikes are typically wider and have aggressive tread patterns to provide maximum traction on loose, rocky, or muddy terrain. They may also run at lower pressures to further enhance grip.

  6. Components: Gravity bikes often use high-quality components to withstand the rigors of downhill riding. This includes sturdy wheels, drivetrain components, and handlebars designed for control and durability.

  7. Protective Gear: Riders of gravity bikes wear extensive protective gear, including full-face helmets, body armor, gloves, and knee and shin guards. Safety is a top priority due to the high speeds and technical challenges of downhill riding.

  8. Downhill Racing: Gravity bikes are commonly used in downhill mountain biking races and competitions, where riders descend on challenging courses against the clock. These events often take place on purpose-built downhill tracks with jumps, drops, and other obstacles.

  9. Maintenance: Due to the demanding nature of downhill riding, gravity bikes require regular maintenance to ensure they remain in optimal condition. This includes checking and servicing suspension components, brakes, and drivetrain.

  10. Transportation: Transporting gravity bikes to the top of a downhill course typically involves the use of chairlifts or shuttle vehicles, as the bikes are not designed for pedaling uphill.

In summary, gravity bikes are specialized mountain bikes designed for downhill riding and racing. They are built for stability, control, and durability, with features like full suspension, powerful brakes, and aggressive tires to handle steep and rugged terrain. Gravity biking is a thrilling and competitive aspect of the sport of mountain biking, attracting riders who seek the excitement of descending challenging courses at high speeds.

User questions & answers

Question: Could I change the tires to 29 in
Answer: If you don't mind getting your hands dirty (literally) on the internals of a bike then you could at least add a 29" wheel to the front by changing out the 26" front fork and rim for a 29" one. This is known in the trade as building a "96er". It also takes some getting used to riding as 96ers handle strangely at first if all you've ever ridden is standard 26ers. Please don't bother wasting time asking your ultra-professional, by-the-book conformist LBS to set this up -- it's kind of an unorthodox hack so they probably won't. Been there done that. It's pretty much a custom DIY thing. On the upside it gets you inside the bike and you get to learn how the things all go together -- good to develop your skills as you work towards doing your first complete teardown and overhaul; something I think everybody with a bike ought to know even if only as a hobby.Ahem. If nothing else you MIGHT be able to cram 27.5" wheels on if there is enough clearance (the difference in wheel radius is only +3/4" (centre to rim)) and you use narrow enough tyres. This is what I am currently running with my 26"-spec Polaris Ranger (Rock Shox XC26 front/stock back) and Continental somethingorother 1.75" tyres. It works great and handles surprisingly well when the wheels are straight and aligned despite having maybe only 1/4" left to clear the bridge, but boy, what a fathermucker when they go out of true. But then this kind of whimsical experimentation is what hacking is all about innit?YRMV.
Question: My son is 14 years old what size you recommend for him
Answer: Sizing Guide15 inch = Sml fits* up to 5'6"17 inch = Med fits* up to 5'8"19 inch = Lr fits* up to 6'21 inch = XLrg fits* 6'1" and taller(*approx. sizing - your final choice is up to personal preferences)This is a general guide. Between sizes? Size down for lower handlebars, more straddle clearance, short arms/legs/torso. If you size up, you may touch when straddling. Size up for taller handlebars, long arms/legs/torso. Sizing is a personal preference, the final choice is up to you
Question: How is the quality build, from gravity to mongoose, never owned either before
Answer: The quality of the Gravity is good! Never had a Mongoose either, but myself and my 2 teenagers and 10 yr old have the Gravity and we all love it. The gears are really smooth and the shocks are good too.
Question: What is the hook shaped piece with the check mark or "J" stamp? Putting bike together but don't know where it goes
Answer: I couldn't figure it out either. Bike works great without it...wherever it is supposed to go. I thought instructions were a little weak in that regard, but things seemed to go together well and bike has been running great for over a year.

User questions & answers

Question: hello, any part is alluminium
Answer: stem, crankarms, and rims. Everything else was steel or plastic. Its my first fat tire bike. Taken on 2 rides so far and have no complaints.
Question: Will this bike rust
Answer: I have owned mine for about a year in my garage. No rust yet. If you leave it in the rain for three years, yes it will rust like anything medal will. But it has a good paint job.
Question: how much it weighs
Answer: I bought my Dolomite years ago when the Fatbike trend was starting to get widespread. I already had a single speed Mongoose Beast, and it was the obvious next step on a low budget. Both bikes are extremely heavy, but here's how my Dolomite breaks down: Front wheel complete is 11.6 lbs. Rear wheel is 13.4 lbs. That is 25 lbs just for the wheels(tires, tubes, spokes, hubs, disc) The rest of the frame weighs 23.9 lbs (frame, fork, crankset, handlebars, seat post and saddle) That is a lot of bike at 49 lbs.
Question: Can this bike hold me if im 370lbs
Answer: yes, these are very beefy bikes . We have 3 and My buddy is 6'4 and well over 350. We use them as cruisers. So yes, they should have no problem with your weight. They are fairly heavy bikes to begin with

How to Measure Your Child's Stand-Over Height

  • What size bike should I get my child? Easy, the best size bike for your kiddo is the bike that fits them from day one. The best way to do that is measure their inseam.
  • Yeah, but what about their age? Age is more like... an approximate fit. Inseam is an exact fit, trust us.
  • Okay, got it. What's an inseam? Good question. Inseam is the distance between the ground and crotch.
  • So, why is this inseam babble so important? We're all different heights and shapes, even when we're the same age. This is especially true with kids because they grow like crazy. By measuring inseam, you're making sure that your child's bike has the perfect fit.
  • Right, how exactly do I measure this? Have your child stand up really straight with with their shoes on and back to a wall. Place a book between their legs and slide it up the wall to meet the crotch seam of their pants, just like they were sitting on a bike saddle. Measure from the top of the book to the floor and.... Bingo ! You have your inseam.

Question: How far does the stand come from the wall
Answer: Not far. The top bar has a flat hunk of plastic (an inch or so thick) that must make direct contact with the wall. The legs curve forward a bit, and they probably sit about a foot from the wall, I reckon.

Answer: Might help to get a horizontal adapter bar for women’s frames. They are used for trailer hitch bike racks. Typically run about $10-$20.

User questions & answers

Question: what frame size is this
Answer: What is the frame size is it 52, 54, 56 cm??????
Question: Are the tires 27.5x2.125 or 27.5x1.25? two conflicting description
Answer: I think they are more like 1.75. I changed them out immediately, but not because they were not perfectly good tires. I am using Tannus flat-proof tires now.
Question: im 6'1 will this bike be ok for me
Answer: It should be fine. Just make sure you can receive it without them dropping the box. Mine was damaged in shipping. This is a really nice bike for the price, with a well-designed rear suspension. It's relatively lightweight, too. With minor modifications and sprocket upgrades this can be made into a monster bike. I'm converting mine to electric--the frame and front fork are beefy enough to take the forces encountered. Depending upon the type of terrain you will be riding, you might want to consider changing out the heavy all-terrain tires for lighter ones. Panaracer 27.5" x 1.5" 'Gravel King' tires are a good fit for the wheel rims (get thorn-proof tubes and 'tuff' tire liners for ALL your tires)--lighter in weight and a smoother tread, in case you want to ride on the street (less rolling resistance) and still have some off-road capability.
Question: My 13yo is 5’4”. Is this the right size
Answer: My son was 5"11"" and it was just the right size for him

User questions & answers

Question: What is the wheel dropout width,is it 170mm? Will it fit a fat bike electric conversion kit
Answer: This bike will work with 170mm axle 'Fat Bike' rear hub motors. I have 2 of these, one with a Magic Pie Vector, (195mm axle) and the other with a 12t MAC geared hub motor (170mm axle). The forks will pull in a little but that is ok. Rear break caliper only needed a 5mm washer on the rear most bolt to properly realign after being pulled in for the 170mm motor axle. The frame triangle also easily fits a 'Large Triangle Battery' (14s9p) from EM3EV.
Question: I'm a big guy, can the tires handle 350lb man? All other bikes appear flat tire when I sattle
Answer: I'm 6'ft2in and about 360lbs. I have a Mongoose Beast, the earliest version of this bike (same frame, no gears, coaster brake), and it handles me without much difficulty. You will need to be careful with the tire pressure -- I see way too many people try to put 20psi or more and pop the tire off the rim, and it was hard to trust that 8-11psi is the right range. The tires will definitely feel soft with a big guy on it, but that's the nature of having 4in or bigger tires. You can buy tires with a harder sidewall like the Origin8 Devist-8er, but after I figured out the right pressure for the originals (about 10psi for me), I decided to run the cheapies for as long as they would go. Still going strong. Oh, also -- if you're tall as well, you can get a 40cm seat stem to replace the original 25-30cm one, made the ride experience much nicer.
Question: Does the 18 medium mean this is a bike for a smaller, medium sized person? To what does this refer
Answer: I'm 5"-11" / (71") with a 32" inseam, and weigh 210 Lbs. The Bike fit's me just fine. The 18" refers to the Frame Size of the Bike. Which according to the chart provides a transition between the Medium 17" Frame and the Large 19" Frame Bikes. The Frame sizing as I look at the chart's, are all based on a persons Height and Inseam. You can Click on the Bike Buying Guide, then look the Chart's over. To see what's suggested for your Height and Inseam. http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=5801315011You can look at this Model of the same Bike but with a 17" Frame. It has a lot of feed back and answered questions that should help you out. http://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Mens-Malus-Tire-Silver/dp/B00TYB8Q7A?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_7&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Question: What is the difference between the mongoose men's malus fat tire bike and the mongoose men's dolomite fat tire bike

The dolomite uses some of the heaviest fat bike tires made. The malus uses private labelled panaracer fat b nimble tires. On a fat bike , tire weight is critical in handling and acceleration.

Question: I'm 5 foot 6 with a bike work for me or is it too tall
Answer: Yes, the crossbar slopes downward towards the seat which makes it useable for almost any height. Also, the seat is easily adjustable. *NOTE* .. Only thing that's annoying about this bike is the shifters are twist shift located where the hand grips are and sometimes it your not careful you will accidentally change gears. Otherwise it's a fantastic bike!
