13 best bicycle chain lubes

Bicycle chain lubes, also known as chain lubricants or bike chain oils, play a crucial role in the maintenance and performance of a bicycle's drivetrain. These specialized lubricants are designed to reduce friction and wear on the chain, cassette, and chainrings, ensuring smooth and efficient pedaling. Here's what you need to know about bicycle chain lubes:

  1. Types of Chain Lubes:

    • Wet Lubricants: These lubes are designed for wet and muddy conditions. They are typically thicker and more durable, providing excellent protection against water and dirt.
    • Dry Lubricants: Dry lubes are formulated for dry and dusty conditions. They are lighter and less viscous, designed to repel dirt and dust while keeping the chain lubricated.
    • All-Purpose Lubricants: These lubes offer a balance between wet and dry lubes, making them suitable for a wide range of riding conditions.
  2. Application:

    • Clean the chain thoroughly before applying lube to remove dirt and old lubricant.
    • Apply the lube evenly to the chain while turning the pedals backward. Ensure that the entire chain is coated.
    • Allow the lube to penetrate for a few minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean rag.
    • Reapply lube regularly, especially after riding in wet or dirty conditions.
  3. Benefits of Using Chain Lubes:

    • Reduced Friction: Properly lubricated chains experience less friction, resulting in smoother pedaling and improved efficiency.
    • Increased Chain Life: Chain lubes reduce wear and tear on the chain, cassette, and chainrings, extending their lifespan.
    • Quiet Operation: A well-lubricated chain operates quietly, which enhances the overall riding experience.
    • Improved Shifting: Lubes can also improve gear shifting performance by reducing chain drag and maintaining smooth movement.
  4. Compatibility: It's important to choose a chain lube that is compatible with your bike's drivetrain components, including the type of chain and cassette. Some lubes are specifically formulated for use with certain chain types.

  5. Environmental Considerations: Some chain lubes are formulated to be more environmentally friendly, using biodegradable ingredients. If environmental impact is a concern for you, look for eco-friendly options.

  6. Dry vs. Wet Lubricants: The choice between dry and wet lubes depends on the weather conditions and terrain you typically ride in. Dry lubes are ideal for dry and dusty conditions, while wet lubes are better suited for wet and muddy environments.

  7. Maintenance Tools: To properly maintain your bike's chain, you may need additional tools like chain cleaning devices, brushes, and degreasers to remove old lube and grime.

  8. Frequency of Application: How often you should apply chain lube depends on your riding conditions and the type of lube used.In general, it's a good practice to lubricate your chain after every few rides or when it starts to sound noisy.

Choosing the right bicycle chain lube and maintaining a regular lubrication schedule is essential for keeping your bike's drivetrain in optimal condition. Regular maintenance helps extend the life of your components and ensures a smoother and more efficient ride.

User questions & answers

Question: Why is 8 oz cheaper than 4 oz
Answer: Because they are paying you to help them avoid storage costs. Sort of like negative oil prices. Or more like exactly negative oil prices.
Question: Will overspray harm tire rubber or carbon frames
Answer: It hasn't bothered my tires, I wipe excess off, if I could afford a carbon fiber bike I would know the answer to that question
Question: How do you use this? I’m new to bikes
Answer: Put your bike in a stand so you can spin backwards. Protect the floor(you are going to be dripping dirty oil). Back pedal (by hand), and slowly drip Finish Line onto the chain while it is running. Do this until the entire chain looks wet. Then keep running for a bit longer to work the oil in. Then, using a rag or paper towel, gently grab the chain while still pedaling backwards by hand. Watch that you do not get the rag caught up in the sprockets. Do not get your fingers caught up in the sprockets, or any other body part. It will hurt. Consider nitryl gloves, as chain dirt is really dirty. I usually repeat this 3 times every 100 miles. It will save your chain. Change out your chain when it reaches 1/8" (3mm) stretch to save your sprockets. Watch utube videos on chain cleaning and bike maintenance. Keep up on it and your bike will last 30 or 40 years or more.
Question: For a recreational cyclist, is this or the Finish Line dry lube better
Answer: This stuff is the thin liquid oil that flashes out some dirt and then stays on the chain to lubricate it. It will remain on the chain even after some water gets on it as oil repels water. Dry lube is different. To use dry lube first you must clean the chain. Then apply dry lube. Dry lube does not last as long and does not resist water But it also does not attract dirt lie oil does. If you clean the cain every 100 miles or every week and there is no rain, dry lube is good. This 1-step is for those wanting to get the job done and not mess with their chain so often. Most cyclists would have 2 or 4 different kinds of chain lube and use one when they are in a hurry (this one is good for that) and another for when they have 30 minutes or an hour to do a full de-grease and tooth-brush cleaning and lube.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this still work in freezing temperatures <20 (other lubes doesn't work, rear derailleur keeps freezing
Answer: Yes I ride rear round in the mountains of COLORADO and it works great!
Question: Is this considered a wet lube or a dry lube
Answer: This is an oil based, wet, lube. It is a fine, light oil and I have had good results with it. I have had several oil lubes over the years and I like Pro Gold the best. I'd say an application is good for 100+ dry weather miles. I tried the wax based lubes that are not supposed to build up road gunk. It was the opposite results for me, so I switched back to oil. Wax lubes might be better than oil in wet conditions.
Question: I have the 4 oz bottle. Am I supposed to cut off the top, as with Elmer's glue
Answer: the cap confused me too. visually it doesn't appear to do much when you twist it, but in fact it does expose a tiny pinhole at the top, and no you shouldn't cut it
Question: Is this better than GT
Answer: This is the best chain lube I have found. My current bike has over 75,000 miles, and I lube every 200 miles or so, so I have lubed a lot. I am convinced that I found the stuff I will use until I cannot ride anymore.

User questions & answers

Question: Could i use the bike wash on my disk brakes without ruining them? (is it oil based
Answer: I don't know why they asked me. I didn't buy the degreaser.
Question: Can I use the degreaser for the Shifters mechanism
Answer: It seems to do that to a degree but it really makes a mess on my chain. I use a different brand wet lub for rainy conditions and that causes some build up on the chain and pulleys but the WD40 lub is much worse and difficult to clean off.
Question: Does anyone know if the All-Conditions Lube work to repel water
Answer: A rusted bike chain should be replaced. It is beyond maintenance/serviceability and may accelerate wear on other parts of your drivetrain.
Question: Does this help for a rusted bike chain
Answer: These press-on nails design for little girls above the age of 5.

User questions & answers

Question: I ride about 600 miles/year during the summer (NO rain), mostly on paved roads. How often should I apply this product
Answer: How long does it last?... it just depends on your rides. Dusty, wet rides... obviously you will have to use more. On the road commute rides.... it could last you an entire season ( potentially). How many times— as often as you want. The point of having your chain cleaned and lubed regularly will help prolong its life.
Question: How long does this last, how many times can you put it on the chain
Answer: Use fork lube on your forks. Putting oil around your forks is an invitation to break down the seals and form a tacky layer that'll attract stanchion-scratching crud.
Question: Can this be used on the forks as well
Answer: Nope. Negative. No cigar. Grab a pair of scissors, a razor or a machete and go to work. Make that hole as wide as you want. The product is stellar and it absolutely needs no "tiny drip tube." Just don't squeeze the life out of the tube. It will last you for seasons to come.
Question: does it come with a tiny drip tube you can insert in to the bottle
Answer: I would avoid getting anything on the disk brake rotor -OR- pads. Even if this bike wash doesn't have oil in it, the dirt grease and grime cold be carried on to the brake components thus contaminating them. Most people recommend using isopropyl alcohol to remove contaminants, and clean with calipers removed or disassembled. Alcohol evaporates quickly and won't leave residue. Plus, always wear gloves when handling your rotors so you don't contaminate the braking surfaces with skin oils.

Answer: Sorry for the delayed response. Each pack has 10.
Question: Will this evaptor off or gum up when used on long term (6mo to a couple years) storage

  • Patented, fully waterproof lubricant can be used in all cycling disciplines, including road, track, cyclocross, and mountain biking

User questions & answers

Question: Could I use it for rollerblade bearings
Answer: I use this on my bike chain. For bearings, I like to use regular machine oil/sewing machine oil. I feel like its a little less viscous and lets the bearings move more freely...just my opinion.
Question: Could I use it for rollerblade bearings
Answer: This a fairly thin lube primarily designed for pedal cycles, especially the chain.
Question: What are some other applications for this lubricant? How does it perform for bearings? Motorcycle chains? Other things
Answer: I dont really know the science behind it, but ceramic is supposed to be a superior lubricant. I was using a wax based lubricant before this one and am quite happy with the performance.
Question: What is the specific purpose of this lube, there is already a dry and wet, but this one
Answer: The frequency of lub application is not only based on the miles done but also based on the nature of the terrain. If you are riding on paved roads which are dusty and sandy ( like a road near a beach ), your need more frequent application. A thump rule is that at every 100 miles, you need to go for an application. But the best manner in which application frequency may be decided is upon a a physical examination of the chain and the drive train. I touch the chain to fell the dust or the sand and also if the chain looks "dry" than go for an application. There is no hard and fast rule in this game.

Ceramic Wet Lube

Ceramic Wet Lube is Finish Line’s most advanced and effective racing lubricant. This wet-style full synthetic lubricant builds a ceramic coating on frictional surfaces resulting in increased smoothness, longer intervals, and a chain that runs so quiet, you will notice the difference. Ceramic Wet’s extreme durability holds up even in wet weather conditions. Although more expensive than most lubes, Ceramic Wet delivers more miles per application, often exceeding 175 miles.

Boron Nitride Technology

Ceramic Wet utilizes a patented boron nitride technology. As the first bike lube company to innovate with ceramic particles, Finish Line has set new standards for race day lubrication. Ceramic Wet is changing the way many mechanics prepare their rider's bikes for race day.

Application Tips

To help this lubricant's nano-sized ceramic particles attach themselves onto and into the asperities of the metal, the first application should be applied to a clean, dry surface (Speed Bike Degreaser is recommended). Within three applications, all frictional surfaces of the chain will be fully coated with ceramic particles and maximum benefits will be realized.

100% biodegradable wax lube

  • Size: 4 oz bottle
  • Wax based emulsion lubricant
  • Long lasting
  • For road and trail applications
  • Extends drive chain life

User questions & answers

Question: Is this better than White Lightning for desert riding
Answer: You need to make sure the chain is extremely clean. It should soak in mineral spirits overnight before you apply it the first time. Swishing the chain every 10 minutes or so helps. Once the chain is clean and dry, apply one drop per link then rotate the chain. Wait 5 minutes or so and repeat. That’s it. I would advise lubing the chain every 80 to 100 miles. I would also put the lube on after a ride so the lube has a chance to dry and settle into the chain.
Question: How do you apply this lube
Answer: It sure does keep my drivetrain quiet. As a bonus, this product is also not an oily, greasy mess. You only need to re-lube every 100 -150 miles, depend on type of terrain you ride on - highly recommended.
Question: Does it keep your drivetrain quiet
Answer: It looks like they make a low temp version but I haven't used it. I.e. https://www.amazon.com/Squirt-Lube-Temp-Chain-Color/dp/B00ZDD3420/
Question: Do you have experience with squirt in sub freezing temperatures? My experience with wax lubricants in cold weather has been poor performance

  • RESEARCH REVIEWS TO SEE FOR YOURSELF. The editor reviews speak for themselves. Best lubricant out there.

User questions & answers

Question: Please confirm size!? (no size in description; shipping weight = 4.6 ounces
Answer: It is for me. Since Squirt is thicker like a lotion I apply it on my finger and butter it on using very little. It is the only lube I use now after trying many others including W.L. Riding here in Florida on sandy and dirt roads I haven't had any issues. Sand used to be a problem. It doesn't seem to pick up sand or dirt and much easier to apply. I'm a fanatic for clean drive trains and now I rarely ever have to clean them. For best results it helps to start with a new or clean drive train.

User questions & answers

Question: Whats the best way to apply this? Dirt and grime seems to be sticking to the chain
Answer: It's a light oil. There's a very slight odor but it doesn't have a solvent that evaporates like a dry lube would.
Question: Is this solvent based at all
Answer: While I have never used the lubricant for this purpose, I'm sure it would work - especially if that is what one has on hand and the bearings need lubricant. However, I would think that a "grease" would be more stable and last longer.
Question: Could finish line wet lubricant be used to lube freehub bearings
Answer: No strong odor with this lube, there is a chemical smell but not overpowering.
Question: Does it have a noticeable odor? I have used another brand of lube, one that has a strong perfumed smell, kind of like grandpa's aftershave
Answer: Container size: 125 ml. Whatever that is. The bottle is exactly hand size. You are aware this is a top rated chain lube; I waited almost a year for it to be offered on Amazon. We’re lucky.

WET Lube is Finish Line's strongest, longest lasting and most water resistant lubricant. WET Lube goes on wet, and stays wet, to provide maximum drivetrain smoothness, extremely quiet rides, and ultimate rust protection in the harshest of environments.

The Choice of Pro Mechanics

If you use WET Lube for riding off-road or in dry climates, be sure to wipe the excess from parts to minimize the attraction of dirt and grime. Since 1994, when WET Lube was first introduced, it has become the preferred lubricant for many professional on and off-road teams around the world.

Stands Up to High Mileage and Wet Rides

Use WET Lube when you ride hard and long. Proven performance for 100-plus mile rides, muddy off-road conditions, long rainy commutes, and foggy salt-air coastal climates. A heavier, wet-style lubricant that requires a little more attention to drivetrain cleanliness, but delivers the ultimate in lubricity and protection.

User questions & answers

Question: can I use this with a single speed beach cruiser
Answer: I don't think so. You need some slack in the chain to thread it through the cleaner's curved parhway.
Question: How to change the brushes? I could not get the old ones out. What tools do you use
Answer: You have to gently pry the walls out a little to release the brush axles. I would probably use some needle-nose pliers to spread the body, but be careful or you will break it.
Question: Will this work by just running the chain backwards
Answer: Yes, you position the device over the chain, pull down a little, and run the chain backward.
Question: How many cleanings will with 4 oz degreaser bottle last? Also, any recommendations for a degreaser (when this bottle runs out
Answer: Instead of those silly little bottles, buy orange cleaner by the gallon or five gallon. It's an excellent degreaser and unlike alkaline decreases, it doesn't promote rust.

Pro Chain Cleaner

Finish Line began innovating chain cleaners back in 1988 when its patented rotating brush design set the standard. For the first time a bicycle chain could be thoroughly cleaned in a minute or two without taking it off the bike. Quick, efficient and easy to use.

Since 1988 Finish Line has innovated two new generations of chain cleaners. Our new third generation chain cleaner has once again redefined the way bicycle chains are being cleaned, both in shops and at home.

Finish Line's proprietary rotating brushes are still utilized in the third generation unit. However, the exit angle has been changed from 90 degrees to 47 degrees, which virtually eliminates drips and spills. An additional row of scrapper pads have been added for enhanced side-plate cleaning. A large magnet has been added to attract and hold magnetized wear particles and is located at the bottom of the chain cleaner. New shop quality plastic prevents shattering when dropped.

For cyclists who are serious about keeping their drivetrain in race-ready condition, Finish Line's Pro Chain Cleaner is a valuable piece of equipment that will make this tedious task much easier.

Pedal & Cleat

Finish Line Pedal & Cleat Lubricant sprays on to fully and evenly coat all frictional surfaces and is engineered to ensure fast engagements and smooth releases every time. Thanks to a 100% dry-to-the-touch micro-thin coating, there is no oily, greasy film or unwanted stain when you walk around in your shoes.

Chill Zone

Chill Zone is arguably the industry's most advanced rust-busting penetrating lubricant. It simply works like magic! Before giving up on a frozen crank bolt, a rusted derailleur spring, a seized seat post, or discarding your rusted chain, give Chill Zone a shot. Bike parts that normally need to be replaced can be reconditioned to ride another day.

Fiber Grip

Fiber Grip is specially designed to create friction and reduce slippage between clamped carbon fiber surfaces. Fiber Grip eliminates the need to over tighten clamps to achieve secure connections. Over tightening can cause internal fractures and fatigue of carbon fiber parts. Apply Fiber Grip in a thin film to clamping areas of stems, handlebars, seat posts, and seat tubes.

Max Suspension Spray

Made with carefully chosen polysiloxane and advanced fluoropolymers, Max Suspension Spray is formulated to fight stiction, condition and protect seals, o-rings, and other rubber parts. Max improves the surface slip of any stanchion, even ones that are coated!
