| Answer: | One of the rods is coated with magnesium, the other is just steel. A strong scrape causes sparks of burning magnesium. Directing the sparks onto some kindling (I like to use a boll of dryer lint and some shredded paper) starts the fire. This product has only a light coating of magnesium. I strapped it all off to get a fire going when I was testing it out. I would recommend it as an emergency fire starter only. I don't think even a well-practiced person could get more than 2-3 fires going with this striker. But the addition of the whistle and compass makes it a product worth having in an emergency kit. |

| Answer: | Good for literally hundreds of uses. The magnesium is flaked off the "brick" with the sawtooth side of the striker and used to ignite a fire with a quick strike to the brick aimed at the magnesium flakes. It takes some practice but works everytime once you figure out the best technique. The magnesium flakes will ignite when sprayed with sparks and burn ultra hot to ignite whatever dry tinder or wadding you use to start your fire. Again - practice makes for a very useful last resort tool. Personally, I scrape off a small pile of magnesium with the saw provided and use my buck knife blade to scrape the sparker bar. Works every time. |

| Answer: | You mean it's primary benefit over some other forms of fire starting. Answer: You could literally store this fire starter in a gallon water for 10 years and it will still work. It is a non-rusting metal (magnesium, 0% iron) that burns. It's the stuff used in flash bulbs on the old cameras. The flint on it's side is not diferentially permeable with water, so you always have a spark available with the flint and fuel available with the magnesium bar, even after a flood or rain. They aren't super-easy to use but they are super-reliable... And super cheap. |

The chemists said its an alloy possibly from the front end of a vehicle. It will light but won't light easily with a spark. If you can find a way to grind it down into a fine powder it might more easily take a spark. |

| Answer: | Lowrider, The bag is a combination of magnesium dust, chips and curls. It's best to spread out a little, so you have all components to work with. The very small chips will light first, and that intense heat will light the larger chips and curls, and cause the dust to smolder. Remember that this a a metal that you lighting, not a solvent. If using a match, move the match about the pile in order to ignite a particle. If using a ferro rod and striker, when used properly, the spark should take care of lighting the smaller particles readily. Once lit, it will flash burn very rapidly, producing very intense heat. |

In a recent test completed on (9/1/19) the Fire Fly fire starter with a 6mm by 2 inch ferro rod exceeded 2000 strikes. By 2500 strikes the flint was almost completely gone. Incredible performance from this size fire steel ferro rod. Hardened Steel Striker attached by paracord and not leather. In actual tests leather was found to rot in wet weather.
