10 best wood splitting axes
A wood splitting axe is a specialized tool designed for splitting logs and firewood into smaller pieces. It is an essential tool for those involved in camping, hiking, outdoor recreation, and other activities that require the processing of wood for fires and construction. Here's what you should know about wood splitting axes:
Design: Wood splitting axes have a distinctive design with a heavy, wedge-shaped head and a long, sturdy handle. The head is usually wider and heavier than that of a typical chopping or felling axe, which helps to split wood more effectively.
Head Material: The head of a wood splitting axe is typically made from high-quality steel to ensure durability and sharpness. Some models may have a coated or hardened head for added longevity.
Handle Material: The handle of a wood splitting axe is traditionally made of wood, such as hickory or ash, which provides strength and shock absorption. Some modern models may feature composite or fiberglass handles, which can be lighter and less prone to breakage.
Weight: Wood splitting axes are relatively heavy compared to other types of axes, with the weight concentrated in the head. This weight helps the axe to generate sufficient force to split wood effectively.
Blade Shape: The blade of a wood splitting axe typically has a convex or wedge shape. This design allows the axe to easily penetrate the wood and split it apart along the grain.
Splitting Technique: When using a wood splitting axe, the technique involves lifting the axe overhead and then bringing it down forcefully onto a log or piece of wood, allowing the weight and shape of the axe head to split the wood along its natural grain.
Safety: Safety precautions are essential when using a wood splitting axe. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and safety glasses. Ensure that the area around you is clear of obstructions and that bystanders are at a safe distance.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is important to keep a wood splitting axe in good working condition. This includes sharpening the blade, checking the handle for any signs of wear or damage, and keeping the axe head clean and rust-free.
Variations: There are variations of wood splitting axes, including mauls and splitting wedges. A maul is a heavier type of splitting axe with a sledgehammer-like back, while a splitting wedge is a separate tool that is hammered into a log to split it apart.
Use Cases: Wood splitting axes are commonly used for preparing firewood, building shelters, and crafting wooden objects while camping or hiking. They are also valuable tools for homeowners who need to split logs for heating or woodworking projects.
In conclusion, a wood splitting axe is a specialized tool designed for efficiently splitting wood and logs. It has a unique design that focuses on weight distribution and blade shape to make wood splitting easier and more effective. Proper safety precautions and maintenance are important when using this tool to ensure safe and efficient wood processing.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the X27 (36" handle) too long for a short (5'2") female |
Answer: | I am 6 feet 200lbs and the 36 " I have is a tad long. If it is too long for you it will lag behind the line of your arms which can cause you to hit log with the handle and possibly rebound on you. You might find it helpful to find a tool like a spade or bat and swing it with your arms at different lengths to see what is comfortable for you. Although they are likely to be lighter than an axe head. Your strength and weight are key elements in making the decision. You have to be able to get the head around so that it strikes the wood in line with your arms and lands accurately. Choking up on handle can make that alignment harder. Of course the best way is to try one out or a sledge hammer would give you a good answer. This splitting maul is excellent and sharp. The best I have used. I wish I had it when I was heating with wood. |
Question: | how to replace handle on Fiskars Axe |
Answer: | Fiskars products are warranted to the consumer purchaser to be free of defects in material and workmanship for as long as the consumer owns the product. Warranty does not cover sharpening, normal wear and tear, environmental factors, accidental damage, misuse, industrial/commercial use. well after a quick look at the warranty i think you may only get a replacement if it was shipped that way if it was wear and tear or anything like that it isnt their responsibility |
Question: | Brand new axe split a dozen dry logs. Corners of blade already slightly chipped. Never hit rocks or hard objects. Is this normal |
Answer: | My older Fiskars splitting axe, older than the X-series of Fiskars axes, has never been damaged from use. The blade has not been chipped out anywhere. It has been used almost entirely on 16" billets of oak, which has been reasonably straight-grained and not full of knots, although of course some knots have had to be split through. I cannot imagine how or why chipping of the blade would occur, unless it might be from glancing blows struck at an angle with perhaps a twisting motion of some kind not normal to the typically straight downward splitting blow. it's a head-scratcher. |
Question: | On a scale of 1-10, how useful is this super splitting axe against a zombie |
Answer: | With Zombies sometimes recovering from FATAL BLOWS it has always been my practice to follow-up with a GOOD WOOD CHIPPER. AMAZON sells a good 7HP Heavy Duty 212cc Gas Powered 3:1 Multi-Function Pro Wood Chipper Shredder https://www.amazon.com/GreatCircleUSA-Heavy-Duty-212cc-Powered/dp/B075SG6372/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1538798975&sr=1-4&keywords=wood+chipper This can be very messy but is made easier by cutting section with a chainsaw. I use the STIHL MS 271 FARM BOSS 20" bar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the distance from the center of the cutting edge to widest point of the flared cheeks |
Answer: | Cutting edge to widest point of wedge measured 4.75 inches and wedge measures 2.75 inches at widest point Best wedge I ever used! |
Question: | How does it compare to the popular fiskar x |
Answer: | It's a different altogether. I own both and the maul is a heavy beast! I like that that 8 lb maul's Iso Core handle absorbs vibration much better than the X27mif the wood you are trying to split is tough like twisted elm and you need repeated strikes. The X27 is a shorter and it is a much lighter axe(not a maul) to swing making it great for splitting straight grained wood. The 8 lb maul is great for splitting large rounds it is my favorite maul for heavy splitting. |
Question: | Is this a good axe to fell medium to larger diameter trees |
Answer: | It is NOT an axe but a wood splitting maul( blockbuster in Aussie speech). To fell a tree you would be much better off with a chainsaw. A purpose built felling axe such as a Plumb, Kelly, Gilpin, Gransfors is the alternative but you would need to be very skilled and fit to use one No doubt Fiskars would manufacture good felling axes but the Iso Core is not suitable for felling. |
Question: | Mine broke while splitting oak. the links to fiskars' "warranty contact" and the "general contact" don't work. how can i get warranty help |
Answer: | I contacted Fiskars via phone and uploaded photos of the damaged blade. They sent a new one out right away! Start your claim here: http://www2.fiskars.com/Customer-Service/Warranty-Claim-Form |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the length of 28 inches inclusive of the head or just the handle |
Answer: | Yes axe lengths are measured from top of the head to bottom of the handle. |
Question: | I am 5'2" would the Fiskars 28" be a better choice for me than the 36" ? I want to split firewood into smaller pieces for my fire pit |
Answer: | That seems like it would be the better choice. I'm not sure if there's a weight difference between the 25 and the 27 but seems in your case the 25 would be better suited for you. |
Question: | |
Answer: | I purchased the Fiskars with the 36 inch handle for my son as a gift he is 5'9" and he really likes the longer handle. It really does split wood like they claim. I read a lot of reviews and from a 67 year woman to a 5'6" guy and every review that I read prefered the longer handle. There were people that purchased the 28" and liked it until they got the 36". I would watch the video as well as read the tons of reviews that are out there. The only draw back is now Fiskars is starting to have them made in China,to me that can only mean a lack of quality. When I made my purchase I made sure that the one I purchased came from Finland, that is where they were originally made. When I received it I could not believe how sharp this thing was and how light. It really has an awesome balance. But all and all I really think you would be really pleased with the longer handle. |
Question: | I am 5'6", which handle length would be best for my height, the 36" on the X27, or the 28" on the X |
Answer: | Probably the 28", but to be safe you can always get the 36" and choke up on it. Do you use a chopping block or split on the ground? If you always use a block, the 28" will probably work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ive never owned a electric log splitter ive only had a mual all my life is it really worth the investment |
Answer: | I can only tell you this, We use this in our living room, that has 2 open arch ways to other rooms. its been about 92 for 2 days and it keeps the room about 75 cool. . The further away from the living room the warmer it gets. |
Question: | Does it come with Hydraulics fluid. What does it take and how much fluid |
Answer: | Its a regular 120 volts plug U.S. |
Question: | Does it work in cold weather |
Answer: | HI, there. Yes, the unit come with an adjustable window kit that expands to 49.6" and can be used horizontally or vertically to adapt to many window configurations. Please reach out with any further queries! |
Question: | I believe i have enough power going to the splitter. Now the feeder won't move. any suggestions |
Answer: | I just received my Quilo 14000btu unit and set it up. It's not quiet. When the fan is running, well, it sounds like a fan. That's okay. But when the compressor kicks in, it has a low frequency annoyingly grumbling noise like the old time refrigerators did when the compressors got worn. Would I prefer the noise over being stuffy-hot inside? Yes. Would I prefer the noise over being a little uncomfortably warm? No. For the record, I also just purchased an Emerson Quiet Kool 8000 BTU unit. It's a lower power compressor, and it's half as noisy. I wish I had bought the Emerson 14000BTU unit for the front room instead of the Quilo, but to tell the truth, I don't know how the noise of those two 14000BTU units compare. And they're too expensive to just buy them to test out. It's odd that the Db ratings are louder for the Emerson, but the actual experience is that it's quieter. We'll see how well they cool this summer. |

Product description
The Gransfors Splitting Maul can be used for splitting very thick and knotty chunks of wood. It is forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit. The axe cuts quickly and easily into the wood and then effectively splits it as the broader section pushes apart the wood. Its weight and sturdy poll with bevelled corners make the maul perfect for striking a wedge. Otherwise, the design is similar to the Larger Splitting Axe, but with a slightly longer poll. The handle has a protective steel collar below the axe head and circular grooves towards the end for an extra firm grip. The Splitting Maul is the heaviest axe produced by Gränsfors Bruk. Comes with English language Axebook.
- 5 1/2 ib. Head
- Length with handle: 80 cm (31.5”)
- Weight: 3,2 kg (7 lb)
- Sheath in vegetable-tanned leather
User questions & answers
Question: | Does Gransfors provide instructions on how to replace the handle |
Answer: | Yes. And the rain fly is large enough to create 2 vestibules, one front and one back, for storing gear outside the tent but keeping it dry. |
Question: | how well does it work on hardwoods (oad, hickory, etc |
Answer: | The Extreme 3 is a 3-season tent, and this is a 4-season tent. |
Question: | In the picture it shows a metal shield on the neck of the handel - does it come with that |
Answer: | For example, if a coat were 5,000mm waterproof, a test is conducted where a long tube is placed over the fabric and the tube is then filled with water. 5,000mm or 5 metres (16.4 ft) is how far you could fill the tube before it would start to leak through the fabric. So in theory, you could stand out in the rain until 5,000mm of rain fell before you would start getting wet. |
Question: | Can anyone compare this to the Fiskars X27 Splitting axe? To me it's the ULTIMATE axe of all times. Cuts through everything. Thanks |
Answer: | That's a simple question with a semi-complicated answer.First, sleeping bags are rated by temperature. Some are +40F (or the Centigrade equivalent), some are +20F, some are 0F, then there are negative degree bags that can easily be found rated down to -50F. Generally speaking the lower the temperature rating the physically larger the bag is.When used as per the instructions these bags will usually (with a quality bag) be comfortable to their rating. You can extend the rating a bit by wearing something while in the bag. I've been perfectly comfortable in a 4 season tent in the middle of a blizzard at night when the temperature was -5F in my North Face Elkhorn 0F bag by wearing a Tshirt. Obviously long underwear or sweats would help with even lower temperatures. (Keep in mind here I'm a hot sleeper, this might not work exactly the same for you if you're like my wife: a cold sleeper.) A watch cap or beanie is also advisable for cold weather.Another issue will be what you put under the bag. An air mattess like you might use for a kid's sleepover will be like adding a refrigerator under your bag in some cases. So in cold weather you have a couple options for sleeping pads. You can go with a foam pad that rolls or folds or a self inflating air pad that's specifically meant for the job. Both will come with ratings that will tell you what the thermal efficiency of the pad is (how well it insulates you from the ground). Generally, the better the efficiency (well, worse really, but better from your POV) the more expensive the pad. You can use both types at the same time too. Then there's the question of what you're sleeping on and what it's temperature is. In nearly all cases a hammock is the coldest way you can sleep because you're relying 100% on the bag and air can move all around you, cooling you from all directions. This is why a bridge often ices up before other sections of the same road. The real question is what you plan to do with the bag and what your space limits are. Most of the information on specific products can be found on a site like the REI website. As for how this relates to the tent:It's a tent, even as a 4 season tent, it's still just a tent. It keeps the rain/snow off of you and the wind out. In and of itself it offers no real warmth in cold conditions. Since it's not canvas adding a heater to it is foolish as it's likely to damage or destroy the tent. The main purpose of the tent is to keep you and your gear dry since wet clothes and sleeping bags don't work as well as dry gear. It will also do very well as a shelter from the wind.Ultimately however, expected conditions determine what sort of bag you want. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Just curious, but are you free swinging it or use another hammer and whacking the back of it |
Answer: | Technically, this is a maul not a splitting wedge so it’s meant to be used by “free swinging”. In reality, Estwing tools have legendary durability and you could pound away on it like a splitting wedge. That said, a splitting wedge is typically hammered with a sledge hammer. I’ve used sledges and I’ve used the back of a maul to hammer wedges. A splitting maul is essentially a sledge hammer with one end sharpened into an axe blade. Still, I’d probably use another log or a mallet to hammer this tool. I wouldn’t bash on it with a sledge hammer. Remember eye protection! |
Question: | What is the black finish? paint? powdercoat? black oxide |
Answer: | I don't believe it's paint; would only be guessing about powdercoat or black oxide; it seems durable and it's a nice tool I can tell you that. The extra weight splits wood with ease and it looks nice. |
Question: | If this is for splitting, can anyone recommend a similar quality axe for chopping wood & for felling a tree |
Answer: | Boy, this is really a tricky question. I have and use many axes, all for different tasks.... But my go to for everything is a 2 1/4 lb axe head with a ~3 foot handle. It is a smallish head (Abit more than a hatchet head) on a standard haft. If I was chopping down lots of trees, I would take a larger felling axe. If I were splitting logs, I wouldswing something far heavier. But if I am going on a hike, a paddle, or any adventure, I would grab this pack axe. It is little more than a hatchet head on an axe halft, but it can do almost anything. I have fell trees with it, and I have split kindeling with it. If I could only take one axe, it would be this one. I think I got it at an ace hardware....or some other crap store, and I think this is the 3rd haft I have put on it (2 of them I made myself, and even the stock haft was OK'ish, but I wanted to make my own). I will say, I would not get an Eswing axe for general use. That steel haft will not be good for general work. It is heavy, transmits shock and vibration to your hands, and does not let you choke up on the axe for fine work. Really, take an honest look at how much of what kind of work you are going to do.... or.... Do what I have done. Embrace the beauty of the axe, start a collection, and find ways to use them all :-) |
Question: | Tried to use the axe. Blue paint from the handle painted my palm amost instantly . Any idea how to make the pant to stay on the handle |
Answer: | Aside from the snide answers (from right wing trolls) to your question, the best way to protect the blue paint is to spray the painted areas with polyurethane. The paint Estwing uses is not a durable paint at all and is only for cosmetic purposes. |

Fireside Friend Splitting Tool
Estwing's Fireside Friend Splitting Tool is forged in one piece. The length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. If you need firewood for staying warm during the winter season ahead, you're going to need a good wood splitting tool. Splitting tools are designed to create smaller chunks by splitting wood fibers apart.
Easy To Use
The original maul resembles an axe but with a broader head, for splitting wood. It also causes nearly no part of the wood to go to waste. More wood means less splitting and enjoying that wood in your fireplace for a longer time.
Built For Power
The best splitting maul will have a large, heavy wedge-shaped head. Swinging the large heavy head will produce a great force focused into the blunt V-shaped head. The dull blade is still thin enough to find its way in between the wood fibers and with the thick head of the maul.
Comes With Comfort
The handle length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. The grip is a beautiful genuine leather. Maul handles are normally straight and closer to round with a elongated oval axe handle, built for maximum control and comfort.
Durability
Estwing sheaths are built with durable ballistic nylon construction with reinforced stitching, offers safety and protection for your Estwing tool. Its button fastening and belt compatible design makes for easy carry around item.

User questions & answers
Question: | Where can you get a replacement handle to fit this? The ones that I am finding are different lengths than the original or the head size is way off |
Answer: | Sorry to be so long in responding. This is a felling axe and great at it, in part, because the cheek is shaped to allow easy passage through the cut wood. The hollow cheek, however, is the opposite of what you need to split wood. When getting the best, you will want to get a nice splitter to go with the axe. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does it come with a cover for the blade |
Answer: | We do not offer 2nd grade products so any purchase from our stock is the standard Gransfors production. While we cannot speak for other Amazon Sellers no 2nd grade axes should be offered under this listing as 'New'. It's a different matter if a product is classified as 'Used - As New' or 'Used - Good' or 'Used - Acceptable', etc. but those would not be offered in the Buy Box. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is it more of a splitting axe or felling axe |
Answer: | Hi Aldo, as much as we would like to answer your needs, I'm afraid it is not feasible in case of FBA Amazon Sellers like us. FBA stands for 'Fulfilled By Amazon', which means that ALL of our Gransfors Bruk stock is shipped to Amazon warehouses where all the orders are fulfilled directly by Amazon and we have no control over that part of fulfilment process. So it is impossible for us to know which actual axe would get picked by Amazon warehouse staff for your order. The same would go for the photos unfortunately. Amazon listings always show representative/general images as they serve ongoing supply of products from many Amazon sellers. They are not individual item listings. Moreover, these listings are property of Amazon and changing/adding description or photos is subject to Amazon's verification process, which takes time and frequently does not get accepted. Ordering Gransfors tools on Amazon - where goods are fulfilled by Amazon and shipped from Amazon warehouse - will always have a random element to it (regardless which FBA supplier you choose). You stand a better chance if you buy from an FBM supplier (Fulfilled by Merchant) and request their attention to detail including perhaps sending you photos of the actual axe they will be sending prior to shipment. But frankly, if perfection is of utmost importance - the only way is to go to a brick-and-mortar store and pick one out of the available selection on the shelf. However, you may find it difficult to achieve due to the current serious supply shortage of Gransfors tools. Of course, you can always take a chance and see if what you receive meets your satisfaction. If not, you can return it to Amazon within 30 days of Amazon Satisfaction Guarantee. I hope this helps. Best regards - Cary |

User questions & answers
Question: | handle length |
Answer: | It worked great on cherry. I haven't tried it on the other woods yet. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Yes, all Gransfors splitting mauls and axes come with a metal shield on the neck of the handle. Thank you |
Question: | Would this be good for striking with a mallet to split 2-3” logs into kindling, or is the head too big |
Answer: | If you ever use one you will never go back the only thing is they could put a longer collar guard just for over strikes. I have never used a fiskars but I know when you hold one of these in your hand you know it is made by hand by somebody that take's pride in their work. I have split about 25 cords and just sharped 3 times. It holds a great edge. I know it's a bit pricey but I think you get what you pay for here. |
