13 best backpacking cooking system

A backpacking cooking system is a set of portable cooking equipment and tools designed for use during outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and backpacking. These systems are specifically crafted to be lightweight, compact, and efficient, making them ideal for cooking meals in remote and outdoor settings. Here are the key components and features of a typical backpacking cooking system:

  1. Camping Stove: The heart of a backpacking cooking system is the camping stove. These stoves are compact and often run on various fuel sources, including propane, isobutane, white gas, or even wood. They come in different designs, such as canister stoves, liquid fuel stoves, and wood-burning stoves.

  2. Cookware: Backpacking cookware is designed to be lightweight and compact. Typical components may include a pot, pan, or cookset. They are usually made of aluminum or titanium to keep weight to a minimum.

  3. Utensils: Compact utensils like forks, knives, spoons, and cooking utensils are often included in a backpacking cooking system. They are usually made from lightweight materials such as plastic or stainless steel.

  4. Windscreen: A windscreen helps protect the flame of the stove from wind, improving its efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.

  5. Fuel Canisters or Bottles: Depending on the type of stove, fuel canisters or bottles are used to provide the necessary fuel for cooking.Canisters are common for canister stoves, while liquid fuel stoves use refillable bottles.

  6. Lighter or Firestarter: To ignite the stove, backpackers typically carry a reliable lighter or firestarter. It's essential to have a backup ignition source as well.

  7. Cooking Accessories: This category can include items like pot grippers, heat-resistant gloves, cleaning supplies, and food storage containers to make cooking and cleanup easier.

  8. Carrying Case: Many backpacking cooking systems come with a carrying case or stuff sack to keep all the components organized and protected during transportation.

Key considerations when choosing a backpacking cooking system include the type of fuel you prefer, the number of people you'll be cooking for, and the weight and packability of the equipment. Some backpackers prioritize ultra-lightweight options, while others may opt for more robust setups that allow for gourmet cooking in the wilderness.

A well-chosen backpacking cooking system can greatly enhance your outdoor cooking experience, enabling you to prepare hot meals and beverages while enjoying the beauty of nature.

User questions & answers

Question: How necessary is the pot support for this system? That is, how ready to use is this kit providing you already have fuel
Answer: Looking at the product images and watching the video you'll notice the male appears to remove the lid quite easily with one hand and the assumably empty pot isn't disrupted. This would lead me to believe there is a slip flange on the lid that slides inside the mouth of the pot much like your pots at home and slips fairly easily. I hate answering questions without having purchased a product but after 4 weeks and only one weak answer I thought observation and analytical thinking might be better than nothing. Fwiw I too am in search of another pot and scrolling the questions I saw yours. I hope this helps out somehow.
Question: Can one cook food in this?? Could I make rice in this?? Which model is best
Answer: Yes
Question: Would this be large enough to cook a block of ramen in
Answer: Both sets include the same items: 2 pots, a frying pan, 2 strainer lids, a cutting board, a pot handle, and a waterproof stuff sack. The difference is in the size of the cookware. The large set includes 3 and 5 liter pots and a 9" frying pan. The small set includes 1.5 and 2 liter pots and an 8" frying pan.
Question: What is the difference between Jetboil Zip Cooking System and Jetboil Personal Cooking System
Answer: No. You can’t expose them to flames but you can put them on the pots when you cook. They are lids so that is their purpose.

User questions & answers

Question: How many cups of coffee can you brew with one canister
Answer: Measured with manual calipers, the outer diameter of the filter (so the smallest opening the aeropress will fit) is very close 67mm (~2 and 5/8 inches), and the flat to flat on the hexagonal flange (so the widest opening on which the Aeropress will balance stably) is 95mm (~3 and 3/4 in), though you could maybe risk another eight inch or so if you're really confident about how steadily you can push down on it. The funnel spout's outer diameter is 48mm (~2 and 29/32 in), but if your vessel mouth is only a teeny bit wider than that, it could chew up these little plastic ridges higher up the funnel. Useful comparison: the Aeropress fits a widemouth mason jar and honestly every mug I've tried it on, but not a standard mason jar. The funnel fits into a normal mason jar or Nalgene opening very well, but only just barely into a Hydroflask.
Question: Is a can of fuel included with the initial system purchase or does it have to be purchased separately
Answer: The correct answer is NO. This product revision does NOT contain BPAs. The following is the revision history from the OEM who designed the product. Per OEM, 7-revisions of the product occurred starting in year 2005. 2005: Rev-1 PC material blue-ish tint. Contained BPAs 2007: Rev-2 PC material blue-ish tint lettering revision. Contained BPAs 2009: Rev-3 updated material from PC to a copolyester also with blue lettering. This was done to rid BPAs as, PolyCarbonate (PC) 2010: Rev-4 started tinting the material smoked grey 2014: Rev-5 changed lettering to inked orange-ish color for half the year June was when they rolled the rev. 2014: Rev-6 updated material again from Copolyester to Polypropylene and added dark tint (darkest of the series) and updated lettering to beige. 2015: Rev-7 updated color back to light grey tint and gold foil lettering for durability as the markings kept wearing off - (like on mine. I own Rev-6) This is the history on this product. Sellers are advised to update photos to ensure customers that they're not getting an older revision. Note to customers: please verify you're getting the latest revision Rev-7.
Question: Does the Java also have a regular lid
Answer: Cleaning the Aeropress is simple: once the water has been pressed through the coffee and out of the cylinder, all that is necessary is to push the used coffee out of the cylinder in the same way that the water had been pressed. You must remove the plastic filter holder, of course. The used coffee grinds are pushed through and into the garbage or recycling bag. All that is necessary then is to rinse all of the parts of the Aeropress to remove any lingering grinds. The press is dishwasher safe, so I put it through the dishwashing cycle once a week or so. If you haven't tried Aeropress coffee, you are in for a treat.
Question: what is the fuel type
Answer: You don't want water at 175, which would end up being just warm after using the press. You want it much hotter. They claim 175 because any hotter you will release toxins from the platic to your coffee. It should be made from creamic or glass. Never use hot liquid with plastic for long repeated periods of time. Use some logic, not just the stats.
Question: What is the diameter of the mug that will fit the AeroPress
Answer: I received mine in about two weeks, so I don't know why it would take longer, unless it is out of stock or it is being shipped out of the country.
Question: is the product bpa free
Answer: The basket is of a dubious metal that outlasted the pot. The pot interior had so much corrosion and pitting after 2 years that it was frightening. The quality of stainless is very very low. Note they do not mention 18-8 or 18-3 stainless. The outside still looks pristine like it has lots of chromium in it. The glass top broke and was replaced. The basket was the only part not ruined in normal use. I question the safety of this pot, now used as a bird feeder.
Question: How difficult is cleaning? I prefer press coffee, but i have to swirl the water in the press and go outside (usually in my bare feet) to dispose of it. A shame what it does to fresh snow
Answer: I gave up on having an automatic coffee maker and started using this one. It makes better coffee/ it draws more of the oils out from the grounds. I learned how to use it from YouTube videos, and after 2 years of making coffee with this very 12 cup Percolator I'll go ahead and share my technique (since someone else's public post is how I learned). First I use regular coffee filters, and just poke a hole in the middle. It helps to wet the holder so the paper sticks to the sides to keep out of the way while you add coffee grounds to your strainer jig (I add 5 heaping dinner spoons). Some grounds get through but after my coffee is done I pour it through a fine strainer anyway to get those out. Start by putting the stove on high. Once you have an angry boil, change the heat down to medium (5 is medium on my scale of 10 for stove settings). This is the heat you'll keep it on while it percolates. Take the lid off the pot and set your loaded strainer jig inside (I forget the technical name for it). Then replace the lid and the percolation process begins/ you'll see water pop up into the glass thing on top, and inside it's dripping down over the coffee grounds to make the coffee. Set your timer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn off the heat but dont lift the lid on the pot, and dont take it off the burner/ just leave it. When everything is cooled enough to lift the lid without hot water spurting out at you, it's ready to drink. Enjoy!
Question: What easily, repeatable ways do people use to create 175 degrees hot water? (I can't see my bleary-eyed AM self fussing with meat thermometers
Answer: Yeah, I just went over to Lehmans.com... they only sell TWO percolators and BOTH are made in China! And at the rate things are going you’d better hurry up and even buy the Chinese “crap” before we can’t anything from China.
Question: why does it take 1-2 months to receive it????this is rediculous in todays world
Answer: I'm not positive what the mesh bag is made of, though I would expect that it is nylon or some type of nylon composite. If you have a health concern, I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to ensure there's no plastic in it, since they don't specify the material in the product description or on their web site. But assuming the bag has no plastic, coffee usually doesn't contact plastic, as long as you pour the hot water carefully into the mesh bag so that it doesn't run over the plastic rim, and as long as you don't overfill the cup so that the coffee comes up to the plastic rim from below.
Question: Is the basket stainless also, or aluminum
Answer: Materials are food-grade. It is made of polyester mesh.
Question: How do you KNOW coffee is ready
Answer: Four scoops will fill it pretty full and only a small amount of very fine grounds end up at the bottom of the cup. I find it helpful to pre-rinse the Coffee Brew Buddy, add a scoop at a time and pour a bit of water over the grounds between scoops. This, in addition to stirring, helps to saturate the grounds.
Question: I just read on this site that it is made in China, That's all I need to know. I refuse to buy chinese
Answer: Just scoop the amount of grinds you need to give you the darkness you want an drop them inside the filter while the filter sits inside the cup. Then, pour very hot water over the grinds. The key to making great coffee is to use the hottest possible water to get the flavor and oils from the coffee grinds.. Dark roasted coffee gives a better flavor as opposed to medium roast, in my opinion. Fine grind is better than medium grind but you may get a few grind at the bottom of the cup. Not a big deal at all. Regular or decaf, the process is the same.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the ring you turn to increase flame supposed to be broken? It’s split in one part. Not sure if mine was damaged on arrival or if it’s meant
Answer: No,return it and get a new one.because if you don’t turn it in the right way, it might force it to come off. If that happens, you have to put it back into its place
Question: Can other fuel cans work or does it have to be the jetboil fuel
Answer: Other fuel cans are fine.
Question: Can you use butane/propane mix instead of isobutane/propane mix? Im not going in the mountains. Kayak trip in Arkansas
Answer: You can use either. The difference between the butane and Isobutane is their vapor pressure point. Butane is the lowest perfoming with the lowest pressure and would not be good in a very cold environment.
Question: Why can’t this be delivered to me in Southern California
Answer: Most likely because Jetboil doesn’t want to get sued in case their product is used in the next major fire. California has become increasingly restrictive on camping stoves as of late due to to ever-increasing wild fire hazards.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does the whole set weigh
Answer: 13.25 oz with the storage net and plastic stove case
Question: How much water do the cups hold
Answer: About 800 ml (big one), about 250 ml for small one
Question: Does a fuel canister fit inside the pots for storage or transport
Answer: Yes the 8.11 size is made to fit in the pots. Nice compact set up. One thing I am going to get for my next trip is the legs that fit onto the bottom of the chaos canister to make it more sturdy and not tip
Question: Is it dishwasher safe
Answer: No, not even a little bit dishwasher safe. Took the above answer at face value and regret it. Both pots ruined after just one run in the dishwasher on the top rack - it completely stripped off the non-stock finish and I was left with a chalky dull metallic coating that rubs off with your finger (so probably would cook into your food). Completely unusable. Glad this was only 20 bucks. Throwing it in the garbage. Very much wish the company had just clearly printed "not dishwasher safe" on the package.

User questions & answers

Question: Does any brand of canister work with this item or does it have to be a specific brand
Answer: Why it will be melt? It heat resistant up to 580℉, you should use it within the temperature range.
Question: does it have auto ignition or do I need to use a lighter to start it
Answer: Have an angle
Question: Does the pot lock on like a jet boil
Answer: Made in China
Question: Can you use a 100g cannister or does it have to be the 230g one
Answer: Yes, they are Bpa free.
Question: a gas of 8.1 ok fits inside the cup
Answer: 100%, they are just like any other Teflon spatula. No scratches in my Teflon pans so far.
Question: What is included with the "system"? Where is the other $80 coming from
Answer: According to the information provided by Amazon the Westmark double spatula is made in Germany
Question: Do I need to buy another attachment to use a pan on this
Answer: Well, they can come apart, they just will not be able to be reattached. My wife and I love these spatulas as single units but the single units are hard to come by in the USA. What I did was grind the edge of the spring bracket until it was thin enough to fail then the spatula cleanly separated. Then you do the other side. You end with two perfect, individual spatulas. Work slow to avoid getting the bracket too hot and melt the handle.
Question: I didn't get the pot support in the shipment - did anyone else get it
Answer: I wouldn't use it on the grill. I bought it so I could flip a grilled cheese without losing the enhancements. It's a WONDERFUL product for what I needed
