13 best propane camping stoves
Propane camping stoves are portable cooking devices designed for outdoor enthusiasts, backpackers, campers, and anyone looking to prepare meals in the great outdoors. These stoves use propane gas as a fuel source to generate a controlled flame for cooking. Here are some key features and considerations related to propane camping stoves:
Portability: Propane camping stoves are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport in your backpack or camping gear. They are ideal for activities like backpacking, hiking, camping, and picnicking.
Fuel Source: These stoves use propane canisters as their primary fuel source. Propane is readily available in small, disposable canisters or larger refillable tanks, making it a convenient choice for outdoor cooking.
Burner Types: Propane camping stoves come in various configurations, including single-burner and multiple-burner options. Single-burner stoves are more compact and suitable for solo campers, while multiple-burner stoves are better for group cooking.
Heat Output: The heat output of a propane camping stove is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). Higher BTU ratings indicate more powerful stoves capable of faster cooking and boiling times. Consider your cooking needs when choosing a stove with an appropriate heat output.
Ignition: Some propane stoves come with built-in ignition systems that eliminate the need for matches or lighters. This feature can be convenient, especially in windy or wet conditions.
Stability: Look for stoves with sturdy and stable designs to prevent accidental spills or tipping. Many stoves have foldable legs and pot supports for improved stability during cooking.
Wind Protection: Wind can affect the efficiency of a camping stove. Some models come with built-in windshields or you can purchase wind screens separately to shield the flame from gusts.
Cookware Compatibility: Ensure that the stove is compatible with your cookware. Most propane stoves are designed to work with a variety of pots and pans, but it's a good idea to check for compatibility before purchasing.
Fuel Efficiency: Propane stoves are generally known for their efficiency. However, some models offer better fuel efficiency than others. Consider how long you need the stove to run on a single canister or tank.
Ease of Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the burners and checking for gas leaks, is important for the safety and longevity of your camping stove. Choose a stove that is easy to disassemble and clean.
Price: Propane camping stoves come in a range of price points. Consider your budget and the features that matter most to you when making a selection.
Safety: Always follow safety guidelines when using propane camping stoves. Check for gas leaks, operate the stove in well-ventilated areas, and keep flammable materials away from the stove.
Propane camping stoves offer a convenient and efficient way to cook meals while enjoying the outdoors. They are versatile and suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities, from simple cooking tasks to gourmet campsite meals. Make sure to choose a stove that aligns with your specific needs and preferences for an enjoyable outdoor cooking experience.

About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of cooking surface when stove is open for cooking grill |
Answer: | about 20'' x 10'' |
Question: | Which carry case fits this stove |
Answer: | Coleman Part# 2000004431. That case will fit the stove AND can hold Two propane bottles. It's a nice case, keeps your stove looking like new plus carrying the bottles. |
Question: | What type of connector do I need for this Coleman Stove? I see many types but do not know which one to buy |
Answer: | it comes with the connector. you don't need to worry about that as long as you buy the small, green, one-use propane canisters. |
Question: | Can an adapter and propane tank be used with this burner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I think it should, provided the adapter is for this kind of Coleman propane stove. Personally, I use a refill adapter to refill my One-LB propane bottles from the 20-LB BBQ propane tank. I like the ease of the 1-LB bottles. The 20-LB tanks are too bulky for camping trips. User questions & answers
Question: | Which latch does this model come with? Most pictures show a large black latch, but 2 pics have the small cheap silver latch that's on the classic |
Answer: | Sometimes Amazon's photos are confusing. Mine will come with the silver latch. |
Question: | Can you buy the adapter hose and use a bigger gas bottle |
Answer: | You absolutely can! If you purchase the Coleman 5’ hose and adapter it show’s the 2burner camp stove on the box. |
Question: | What is the difference between this triton model and the Coleman classic stove |
Answer: | I just got off the phone with Coleman today (7/23/16)...I confirmed with them that the burner control knobs are the SAME construction as the Classic Stove. It is a bit larger, but the basic workings are the same.I bought a Classic at Walmart and have read those reviews re: the control of the flame. The Triton and the Classic can both have the same issue of hard to control flame. The "repair" outlined with the Classic should also work with the Triton...I am referring to the Triton 20953, which does not have Instastart. But the actual controls with the knobs are all the same.... |
Question: | Seems plenty of the reviews have noted this is not an insta-start stove as described. which is correct? the reviews or the product description |
Answer: | The reviews are correct. I, like you, thought the product description must be correct and that the reviewers simply mistakenly ordered the wrong product or something, so I ordered the stove since it said it was the newer model. In fact it does not have the insta start. Here's how you can tell from the product photo: the instastart button is a red button on the left lower side of the stove. Not there on this model. I sent it back and was able to pick one up at REI in time for our trip that had the instastart button and it worked great. REI also has a sale right now on a different (more upscale) camp stove that is even less than the Coleman Triton. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can someone tell me where this is made?? trying not to buy anything from china. thanks |
Answer: | Some people who answered this question need to be little more realistic and objective. Very big portion of current Chinese manufacturing was handed to them by US corporations out of greed. Top %1 who manages WallStreet also places huge pressure on US corporations to be much more profitable (greedy). End result, fire US worker, take manufacturing to China and pay much less. So "they stole from us" is not quite correct. |
Question: | Does this come with the hose for 16.4 oz propane tank hook up |
Answer: | Yes the hose to connect the stove to a 1 lb propane bottle comes with the stove. |
Question: | Can this be used in the house during a blackout type situation |
Answer: | YES YOU CAN...BUT....EVERYTHING used involving FIRE releases some type of Co2 emissionsyou need to take a few precautions such as using it in a vented area opening windows and having ceiling or portable fans. If you have a hood fan above your electric/gas oven and it vents smoke and fumes outside or to the attic you should definitely place this burner on top of your oven, if it doesn't vent to the outside or attic you'll just be recirculation back inside. Also you NEVER want to leave it unintended and once you're done cooking turn it off. It wouldn't hurt to get a Co2 monitor and place it around 10-12 feet away from your cooking area, having it that distance will keep it from going off unnecessarily yet still let you know if the Co2 levels get high. And above all use some common sense you are cooking over a open flame!!! |
Question: | On high, how long will a 16.4oz propane cylinder last? How long will a butane canister last |
Answer: | I actually tested this out to see how long each fuel would last. The 8oz.Butane lasts just a little over 2 full hours on high heat. The 16oz. Propane lasts just over 4 hours on high heat. However, where I live (Boise,Idaho) the elevation is about 2,800 above sea level so that is a factor to take into consideration....different elevations, slightly different results. Also, not every can is going to give you the same results. On average,I'd be comfortable to say that the above times are pretty consistent + or - 10 minutes either way. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made from |
Answer: | Looking at the previous answers, looks like it used to be made in the usa, but now it looks like it's made in china. In the product details, it says it's made in china as of 5-28-17. |
Question: | can i use it without the legs? or what's the lowest i can adjust the legs to |
Answer: | No, you cannot use it without the legs. I looked at this too. The propane connection assembly extends lower than the metal shield around the burner. The legs do not have a lot of adjustment, maybe an inch or two. I have the stove packed away with my camping gear and cannot verify the exact amount of adjustment or lowest cooking height. |
Question: | I would purchase this to do pressure canning outside. Is there a problem with the weight of a full canner |
Answer: | Weight is not the issue with outside canning..... Too much heat on the thin aluminum canner bottoms is the issue. https://www.healthycanning.com/pressure-canner-heat-source/#heat-source-too-high Most everyone agrees to definitely avoid any “turkey fryer” propane heaters because of the high heat required to boil the oil to fry the turkey would damage many canners. Some people say, however, that there are some safe outdoor heat sources — ones with adjustable temperature controls such as the Camp Chef line. “Only Camp Chef brand 2 burner stove on low is the only safe one we know of.” 4 |
Question: | How much weight can this handle? I am hosting a lobster bake so I am figuring about 45 pounds/ 21kg will be on the unit at any given time. Thank you |
Answer: | I came here to look up this answer. I can say that I've had mine since 2015 and have routinely mashed and boiled wort on the burner. Over 7 gallons. Which would be around 56 pounds. I may have even doubled this up once with two batches at the same time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do the side flaps come off or fold outward all the way so that a longer griddle can be used |
Answer: | Yes they fold out, so if its not windy you can have a larger pot pan or griddle, Does the back come off though? the Eureka spires does. |
Question: | Is there an attachment for the hose from a 20 lb propane bottle |
Answer: | It is not included, but you can certainly purchase one. We attach ours to our trailers quick disconnect still using the sm bottle attachment. |
Question: | Will this support the lodge 20" by 10.44 inch griddle without removing the wind flaps |
Answer: | i got it out and measured it. it will take the griddle you present. 3/4 inch space each end of 20 inches with wings up. the 10 inch side has 3/4 in in back and no limit in front. hope this was helpful. |
Question: | I've never purchased a camping stove before and not sure what to expect--in all regards....really... :) But, to be clear, do I need to purchase a hose and/or connector for a propane tank or does that come with the purchase of the stove |
Answer: | You will need a hose to connect to a large propane tank but there is a connector for the small bottles. BTW, this stove is the bomb. When we lost power this past Thanksgiving, EVERYTHING that needed to be cooked on a stovetop we cooked on this stove because the turkey was in the oven and our generator wouldn't support the oven and burners. The stove performed wonderfully! |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this burner be used indoors |
Answer: | I set it on top of my electric range and use it for cooking with a wok. I like gas better for the wok. Works fine, although my house is pretty drafty so I don't have to worry much about ventilation. Downside? Don't leave it setting on the electric stove and turn the electric burner on. Might do a little damage when the gas explodes! |
Question: | My reason for considering this purchase is if the stove has a low setting, low enough so oatmeal doesn't burn. Some reviewers said yes AND no |
Answer: | I cook oatmeal on this burner every morning with no additional hardware. turn it very low- as low as possible. if your pot is small, do not cover. if the pot is deep, use a cover. you can pretty much tell if it boils over that the heat is too hi and or the pot is too shallow. |
Question: | is the unit stable, get hot enough for a wok pan? flat bottomed wok |
Answer: | Yes! Very stable that's why I got mine, and is great for larger pans/pots. I'm not sure about hot enough for wok but it should as I have cooked large pots of stew. For me it's a great one burner stove. |
Question: | Does this product includes the connection to the propane tank or do I have to buy a separate hose |
Answer: | The Coleman 5453A series Propane Stove is supplied complete with the following: 5453-2351 = Grate. R430-565T = Regulator assembly. 5453-3351 = Foot Assy. 5453-1351 = Knob. Note: The Regulator Assembly is the connection to the 16.5 Coleman Propane Fuel tank. A hose would be an addition of your choice if you wanted the propane to be farther away from the stove itself. |

Question: | Can I remove the gas cylinder before it is empty for storage |
Answer: | Absolutely, you wouldn't want to store the gas cylinder attached to burner for an extended period of time. |
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | On my kitchen scale the full gas canister weighs 30.12 oz. and the stove components weigh 24.76 oz. When weighed together as a unit I got 54.86 oz. = 3.43 pounds. |
Question: | How long does it normally last for one full propane tank? Say, if I cook for about 20 minutes every time, how many times can a propane tank be used |
Answer: | Usually a tank will last 8 hrs if you leave it at medium heat to low. Depending in the space required to heat. So if you the calculations. 20 min X 3 = 60 min 3X8=24. So about 24 times give or take a few. |
Question: | Is it sturdy enough to set a cast iron skillet ontop of and cook food without worrying about damaging the burner setup |
Answer: | Hello. I take this stove camping and canoeing all the time. I use a large, heavy, cast iron skillet with a 11" base, 12" top, 2.25" sides to do my cooking. However, to maintain a hotter oil temperature for frying fish you must cover the cast iron skillet with a lid otherwise the oil will not get hot enough to boil. I purchased a commercial aluminum lid for a stock pot to use. NOW, LISTEN CAREFULLY, the factory propane cylinder PLASTIC BASE WILL NOT WORK and IS DANGEROUS TO USE with this setup. The cast iron skillet I use is much to heavy for safe use and with boiling oil you are heading for disaster. Here is the SOLUTION for a larger, very sturdy base. Get a new or used 12" non-stick fry pan. Take the handle off (grind, bend, or unscrew). File any sharp edges. Drill a 3/8" hole in the center of the pan. Get (1) 3/8" x 1 1/2" or 2" long bolt (depending how deep the non-stick fry pan is), lock nut, 2 washers. Get about 6" of 4" diameter PVC plastic pipe. Get a 4" PVC plastic pipe end cap with a flat bottom. Press, or glue, the PVC end cap onto the 6" long PVC pipe. Drill a 3/8" hole through center. Now assemble stand: non-stick fry pan cooking side faces away or to ground. PVC pipe is now all 1 piece and rests on top of flat surface of fry pan. 3/8" bolt with washer goes inside pipe, through fry pan and is bolted with washer and lock nut making the entire unit 1 piece. DO NOT tighten the 3/8" bolt so tight that it splits the plastic PVC, just snug. The 3/8" bolt should not extend past the lip of the fry pan or it will not sit level. The 1 pound cylinder will fit inside with single burner stove attached. You have just made a much safer base for your Coleman single burner stove. "WARNING" You must still exercise EXTREME CAUTION and CAREFULNESS when cooking with this setup and especially when using HOT OIL (wear oven mitts when removing HOT skillet). You can vary the diameter of the base fry pan for sturdiness, or the PVC pipe height. The cooking surface has now been raised but as long as the ground is solid and flat, or the table sturdy enough, I have not had an issue with tipping. There is a small space between the PVC pipe and the 1 pound cylinder. You can wedge a small twigs in, or plastic, whatever works to tighten the cylinder so it does not shift around or turn while cooking. I pack the PVC and base as 1 piece but you can unbolt them if you have to make 2 smaller items. Best Regards, and Enjoy Cooking With Your Coleman. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a propane adaptor? If not, what should I get? I am new to propane stoves |
Answer: | Yes, it's made to fit the small green bottles but can be adapted to be used on a 5 gallon. You will need to buy an adaptor hose to fit the stove & screw on to the 5gal bottle. That set up is great for extended camping time. |
Question: | The images show two different clasps. Does this model come with the wide or narrow one |
Answer: | We just bought this model on Amazon about 3 weeks ago. It has the larger clasp and seemed to work well. Went camping and the ignition/lighter switch was a huge help. Used it for 2 days straight and barely went through 1 small propane tank. Good luck! |
Question: | Do you have to use Colleman propane canisters |
Answer: | Any 1-pound propane canister will work, as well as hooking up a bulk propane tank via appropriate hoses. Triton is the best camp stove I've ever used. Highly recommended! |
Question: | There are 2 different clasps pictured - is the wider clasp made of metal or plastic |
Answer: | The entire stove is metal except for the nobs and the easy start button. The black clasp to lock is metal as well as all the hinges. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this stove expose you to lead. I do not see a prop 65 warning |
Answer: | I have not been able to go camping so I have not tried this cot out yet. But I unpacked it and took a close look in order to try to answer your question. There is a label on it that states it can hold no more than 225 pounds. I think that is probably accurate. Any more weight than that and the side springs would start tearing the fabric. And while it is long it is also very narrow. I don't think you would be comfortable as you would be laying on the springs. I don't think it would work for you for these reasons. |
Question: | what size propane tank is suppose to be used with this stove |
Answer: | No, it's 13" high. |
Question: | The listing says "up to 20,000 btu". is that for each burner, or for both combined |
Answer: | about 6.3 feet long and a mere 2.5 feet wide |
Question: | Can you attach a 20 lb. Propane tank to this stove |
Answer: | 26.00 x 13.00 x 75.00 Inches |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you hook up a 20 lb tank |
Answer: | Judith: Yes this has wind screens. The two "side shelves" you see in the picture can be raised and hooked to the cover to block the side wind. And as other's have said the regulator that comes with this is only for the small propane canisters. You need the special regulator and longer hose purchased separately for the large propane cans that you typical see with a full size propane grill. |
Question: | Does this come with the regulator |
Answer: | What regulator? It comes with everything you need except the fuel bottle. I also highly recommend purchasing the griddle. |
Question: | Is there a storage case for this stove? The one I found appears to fit a smaller stove |
Answer: | I bought a storage case for the stove as well. I can't seem to answer this question and look through my order history for the link. Walmart also sells these stoves and the covers. |
Question: | Do they make a plate that can be used for grilling? I see the griddle but not for grilling |
Answer: | Yes, you will find this griddle below, and many others on Amazon. Cast Iron Griddle (20" by 10"), Reversible, Pre-Seasoned, Grill and Griddle Combo, BBQ, Campfire, fits over two stovetop burners https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078XGDJBM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3ayADbRTVJH79 The 20x10 inch fits mine perfectly and the 3 burners allow me to cook Pancack on one end and bacon or cause on the other. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long does it takes to boil one liter of water |
Answer: | About 2” |
Question: | Is there a special type of gas to use with this or a special size or canister |
Answer: | They don’t list an R-value but most say it’s around 4 and from using it I agree. I used it recently in Nordhouse dunes with overnight temps in the 40’s and didn’t feel any cold from the bottom. |
Question: | If I’m in the woods, what’s the best surface to use this on or should I pack something to put under it |
Answer: | From the research I have done this pad has an r-value around 4 |
Question: | Exactly how much does this little stove weigh |
Answer: | R-value is the temperature difference per unit of heat flux needed to sustain one unit of heat flux between the warmer surface and colder surface of a barrier under steady-state conditions. R-values are additive for layers of materials, and the higher the R-value the better the performance. This can be used as a 4-seaonal sleeping pad. |
