About Eureka

Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka’s long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.

The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company’s annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.

In 1960, Eureka’s new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.

Selecting a Tent

Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst

In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents

For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels

Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters

Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Answer:	This is a very good tent but not for watching stars. The top is white and not see thru. There are 2 small triangle shaped windows at the top that can be opened and thats all. This is a 4 season tent. If you want to see the stars you should get a 3 season tent. Most of the top of a 3 season tent is see thru mesh.

Answer:	I sleep on a 6 inch high twin inflatable mattress in mine and am quite comfortable and have plenty of space to spare but I like space on the floor for stuff and to sit.(The tent isn't square so there may not be enough room at the top and bottom of the mattress, but definitely is in the middle if you had no gear).As a scout leader, we camp at Klondike Derby every year in the snow and it's a nice comfy tent. I just bring an extra blanket for the floor.With 2 adult leaders in the tent its a little snug when you have gear and boots in February around here just.

Answer:	Well, any tent you buy will give you a rating on how many people it sleeps. That is if you use a small pad and sleeping bag with no room for gear. I always cut that number in half and that will give you a comfortable number for sleeping and gear. So a 4 is really a 2!I have slept in it 4 to 5 times and I would say you will be fine with two people.

You still have to be careful to set it up correctly. If you set a tent up in a low spot that floods any tent will eventually leak. A properly sized poly tarp under the tent will help protect it from rocks and roots while adding another layer of waterproofing. Another one tarp inside helps keep the floor clean and will ensure you stay dry in anything short of Noah's flood.

Answer:	7x7 would be too small. I believe I use a 10x8 and it's perfect size because it creates a floor for both vestibules. Not sure where to get one in camo but I'm sure they're common. I use a brown/silver one because the brown is good all-around camo, but I can use the silver side as a signal device if needed.

Answer:	I just received an email back from the manufacture of this product and he states that it does have pockets.

Answer:	I've often found Amazon descriptions to be incomplete for various products. It's understandable since they sell almost everything, by almost every manufacturer in existence... so a percentage of them is sure to have some details missed. If you go to the Snugpack website, under (Specifications), it says... Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.That's all 4 seasons for ya.

Answer:	Technically the specification states the maximum load as 250 lbs. However, my wife and I exceed that by at least 100 lbs and there didn't seem to be any issues. I have taken the explorer down a class 3 river the cabarrton river in Idaho with no problems. Take the skeg off if you do rivers, will just cause you problems if you dont, mainly you will loose it. Answer:	While I have used this tent with a queen sized air mattress, it didn't really work. You cant zip the door shut along the bottom, and it takes up all of the floor space. If you are fine with that, then go for it.

Sleep in the cab. Get a camper shell. Get a tonneau cover, and sleep under the tonneau. Use the stake pockets on your bed rails, and improvise shelter with a tarp. Do I need to point out that since you have the luxury of a truck, by all means do not sleep on the ground?

Answer:	Hi! The screen room does have a floor- same type of plastic floor as the main portion of the tent. The windows on the inside of the tent have zip up flats, but the screened in portion at the apex of the tent does not. That is covered only by the rain fly.
Question:	With the back being 80% screened, does this make it too cold inside for kids (just in regards to regular cold mountain mornings--not winter camping
Answer:	We went camping in this tent in mid-September at approx 12,000 ft above sea-level in Colorado and yes, not having a permanent cover over the back of the screened portion made it very cold. We ended up having to cover the back screen wall with moving blankets we had in the back of our car. This is just a one season tent for high altitudes, summer.
Question:	If i was going to lay a tarp down first before setting the tent up(so nothing pokes through bottom), how big of a tarp would i need
Answer:	we have a 16x20 ft tarp that we slightly fold over about 2 ft. that gives us about 3 ft in front of the tent as an entrance outside of the screened in area. you definitely need a large tarp for this tent even though it may look ridiculous when you fold it out :)

Answer:	Sleeping area is approximately square - about 10X10. The porch is about 4 ft deep and 10 ft wide on the sleeping area side, but the front porch corners are angled, so the front width of the porch is only about 9 ft.

Answer:	If you were to keep the zipper windows closed you would have a sauna. The tent is not torrential rain proof, but it is waterproof and that goes for inside as well as out.

Answer:	The tent has an integrated rain fly. There's a video on the Coleman site that shows it performing. For me though, I'd buy the optional rain fly accessory for added protection and ventilation.

Question:	Has anyone tried pouring water through the holes in the lid, like for tea or coffee? Does it pour well
Answer:	So far I have never tried to pour water through the holes but the lid does fit snug. The downsides is that the handle is slightly jiggly because it folds in, the holes are fairly small, and the handle for the lid is also small to fit the handle on top. When I drain things I like it to be quick (like with a strainer) but I'm sure you could use it to pour tea.
