User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 55L capacity with or without the daypack |
Answer: | The sizes are pretty much the same but a S/M better suit's shorter people. My girlfriend is 5'2" and we ordered S/M VOLUME DIMENSIONS WEIGHTS/M 3173 IN3 / 52 L 24H X 13W X 12D IN. 3.75 LBS.M/L 3356 IN3 / 55 L 25H X 13W X 12D IN. 3.9 LBS. |
Question: | Did anyone has an experience using this bag as a carry on in any of Europe budget airlines such as Ryanair |
Answer: | I have traveled through SE Asia and Mediterranean Europe with this pack and have only had to check it one time (flying from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam). I have flown on several different airlines in that time. Unfortunately, I can't speak to Ryanair, as I have never flown with them. I would suggest not having it on your back. For some reason, it seems smaller with the straps stowed and the day pack removed. The gate attendants are much less likely to give you a second look that way. Typically, I keep everything I will need during my flight in the day pack, and put that under the seat, and I stow the large pack in the overhead bin. |
Question: | hi, can you please tell me the size difference between small/medium and medium/large. thanks |
Answer: | They are for the Farpoint/Fairview daypack that zips onto and comes with the 55L and 70L packs. Unfortunately, they are not sold separately but if you do have one then it can attach to the front of the 40L pack as well |
Question: | Have most people been successful using this as a carry-on with the daypack removed |
Answer: | You can use this pack if you are plus sized. If the hip belt doesn’t fit, you just need to ask for a belt extender from osprey. You fill out a form On their website and they will mail it to you free of charge. Very simple process. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the Osprey 30 have a bottom zipper compartment for shoes |
Answer: | I'm 5'2" and have a petite frame, and the bag works very well for me. The straps are highly adjustable, and the "back area" itself is not terribly broad. From a size perspective, I think this would be a great option for children. |
Question: | how many packing cubes could you fit in to this |
Answer: | I have flown with this bag a couple of dozen times and always store it under the seat in front. Whether it fits depends to some extent on the plane and seat configuration where you are sitting. I've even fit the Porter 30 under the seat of commuter planes like the CRJ 700 Remember, this is a soft sided bag so depending on what you have inside, it will conform to its enclosure. If the Porter 30 is filled to the brim with hard items that are not malleable, it may not fit. I generally slide my Porter 30 into the seat in front horizontally so that it doesn't stick out all. Sometimes I have to jam it in, but I can usually do that with little difficulty. |
Question: | Is this bag suitable for a 10 year old girl and 11 year old boy |
Answer: | Compatible with: Aether/Ariel Series + Volt/Viva Series + Ace 75 + Shuttle Series + Sojourn Series + Farpoint 80 + Porter Series |
Question: | Will it fit under seat in airplane |
Answer: | Depends on the size of the kit. The bottom of the main compartment is about 8.5” by 4” at the very bottom. Give or take a half inch here or there. Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the interior sleeve hold a 3 liter water reservoir? (I noticed in the "frequently bought together" section it is paired with a 2 liter bladder |
Answer: | I believe a 2 Liter is the max intended size. That is what I used and it seems to completely fill the hydration sleeve. |
Question: | Is it foldable/packable |
Answer: | If you really want foldable, get the ultralight stuff pack. You can roll that thing up into a super tiny package. The back panel in the Daylight makes it more comfortable to wear, but won't pack down as small. |
Question: | How many liters is it |
Answer: | According to REI it is 13 liters |
Question: | Aside from the switch from grey to black for the side fabric panels, are there any other differences between this and the previous version |
Answer: | · The accent fabric has changed from a 600D Packcloth to a 410D Packcloth.· The bottom fabric has changed from a 210D Nylon Double Diamond Ripstop to a 410D Packcloth· There has been an aesthetic change to the backpanel. Same stuff, just looks more open now.· There is a slight increase in volume by about a liter (two pairs of socks).· Different colors for fall.· Instead of gray accents the accents are a darker hue of the main color. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am 6' tall 220 pounds could I get away with the small size frame or do I really need the larger one How much difference does it make while caring fo |
Answer: | I would get the larger. I am 5'5" 150lbs and I got the small/med; fits perfect. I went to the LEI store to get measured. |
Question: | Is this water resistant |
Answer: | No. Most back pack require a rain cover |
Question: | What size laptop does the daypack fit (I have a 15in)? Does it have enough capacity to use the daypack as an everyday work bag |
Answer: | The15" laptop did fit however the daypack was very small and did not have enough capacity for me. I left the daypack at home and carried a little larger daypck on my trip. |
Question: | Can you fit the Farpoint 70 on the overhead bin without the daypack attached to it? There seems to be mixed opinions on this. Thank you |
Answer: | It will fit perfectly fine in 737/A320 and larger planes. It will have trouble fitting in regional jets. If you don't pack it full, and you are on a larger regional jets, you may be able to fit it in horizonally....though that won't make you a popular person:)Now, fitting in overhead bin, and being allowed to take it onboard without getting charged extra (budget airlines) are totally different stories. If you pack the main bag full, you are not getting away with it "IF" you are asked to put it in the guide box. If you pack it to 40L capacity, a M/L might be able to squeeze into the guide box slightly diagonally, a S/M will have absolutely no problem. In fact, it may be a bit counter-intuitive, but a S/M farpoint 70 main pack (packed to the same capacity as 40L) is actually easier to fit into a guide box than a farpoint 55 or farpoint 40. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can somebody tell me please if you can bend and pack this backpack in a smaller suitcase |
Answer: | The smaller detachable day pack, yeah probably but the bigger pack no you cannot. It has a frame in it for support that won't bend |
Question: | So for the Fairview 55, is it a 40l main pack with 15l daypack |
Answer: | The main body of the pack is 42 liters with a 13 liter day pack which makes 55 liters in total. |
Question: | Size chart |
Answer: | Torso length fitting recommendations: XS-S: 13"-17" S-M: 16"-20" To measure a torso length: Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length. |
Question: | Can the main part of the bag (if you detach the daybag) fit on overhead carry on |
Answer: | I’ve successfully done this with the xs/s size on international flights on three different airlines. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the female clips on the shoulder straps for? They're right below the compression straps that are at the top of the shoulder straps |
Answer: | They are for the Farpoint/Fairview daypack that zips onto and comes with the 55L and 70L packs. Unfortunately, they are not sold separately but if you do have one then it can attach to the front of the 40L pack as well |
Question: | What size can the hip/waist belt extend to? Is there a pack available for plus size women |
Answer: | You can use this pack if you are plus sized. If the hip belt doesn’t fit, you just need to ask for a belt extender from osprey. You fill out a form On their website and they will mail it to you free of charge. Very simple process. |
Question: | Will it fit under seat in airplane |
Answer: | I've put it under the seat in several airlines, including international, domestic and smaller airplanes. The bag does stick out a few inches into your foot space but has fit well enough on all of these planes to not be an issue. |
Question: | Can you list every difference between this and the Farpoint 40? Thank you |
Answer: | I keep asking the same question and nobody has a satisfactory answer apart from the vague and generic so I went to REI and tried on the various packs to figure it out once and for all: So regardless of weight, generally women have less space between the base of their necks and their shoulders, ie we don't have broad shoulders like men. The shoulder straps on the Fairview are therefore narrower which prevents them digging into the neck, and curve inward around the front of the shoulder and back out around the chest instead of straight up and down like the Farpoint, so it doesn't dig into the boney area of the shoulder near the outer end of the clavicle. The hip belt is attached at a slight angle, so it sits better on sloping hips instead of hips that go straight up and down like men's. As a minor detail, the Fairview also have clips on the straps where you can stowaway the chest strap when not in use, as well as attach a daypack. As far as I know the Farpoint does not have this feature, it only has elastic bands there. Then there are the obvious colour differences, and subtle differences in particular measurements here and there, but that's about it. The S/M is 40l, and the XS/S is 38l similar to the farpoints M/L vs S/M. |

Answer: | No |
Question: | I’m 5’3” & 135lbs. What size is best |
Answer: | I’m 5’6”, and the small/medium is perfect for me. If there’s a smaller size, that might be better for you, but there’s a few inches of adjustment in the back. |

Answer: | I packed for 10 days in Italy in the winter and it worked perfectly! |
Question: | Is this the one for men or women? I am trying to find the 70 for women. Thank you |

The creates a slimmer profile for the bag, making it a better checked bag. It also utilizes an internal LightWire frame suspension system that helps transfer load from the harness to the hipbelt.

Front Compression Straps
Dual front compression straps keep gear stable while wearing the pack.

User questions & answers
Question: | does the new 2017 model main compartment zip open down the sides like the older model does |
Answer: | Yes...we flew LAX to Paris CDG on Norwegian 777 with two Porter 46 packs. As long as not overstuffed and within weight requirements it was not a problem at all. Rome to Paris was the only time we had an issue with Joon (AIr France) and it was because of weight. Just walked away and put a few heavier items in the coat pockets and the bags were good to go. Compression straps help keep the bag size within limits. I don’t recall any airlines in Europe checking demensions of the bags, only the weight. The Osprey bags themselves are extremely light and great for carry-on only travel. One thing we noticed is the black colored bag appears smaller than the bright blue even though they were identical dimensions. All black will draw less attention at the check in counter. |
Question: | what's the difference between the new and older model porter |
Answer: | I used this bag for 2+ weeks in Europe. We went to several cities in Germany, Brussels and London. My mom and I both had one as our carry on. We packed light. I had 2 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of pants and a dress I think. I am plus size with large feet. |
Question: | Has anyone tried carrying on this backpack on a norwegian air flight? it looks like the dimensions are slightly bigger than norwegian allows |
Answer: | It does fit in a 17.3 inch laptop but it does protrude out. Plus the weight distribution is uneven with a heavy front. You could keep it in the main bag pocket against the frame of the bag. |
Question: | I am going on a 3 week trip to europe in may/june and want to know if this would be a good choice for a bag. i will be traveling to 8 different countr |
Answer: | The Far point is two big for two carry-on bags. The second backpack, purse or computer bag will have to be smaller than 16-20 liters |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this pack have a designated space for a bladder and if so can it fit 3L |
Answer: | Designated? No, but the upper pocket might hold it or the main pocket surely will. |
Question: | I am 5'4" and 150 lbs, i am hoping to use this on a one month trip around europe. should i get a s/m or m/l? also is the compartment big enough |
Answer: | I have the M/L and I am 5'9 160Ibs. I feel very comfortable with the bag as it is serving quite nicely after using it for almost 5 months now. Keep in mind if you are flying some airlines have been getting stricter with the size capacity (since 55L bags are the "max" size allowed as a carry-on). If you are only traveling a month you might want to opt for the smaller 55L bag to play it safe. In general This bag is great |
Question: | Could a medium build woman carry this when it's full? could i pack for a two week trip in the uk w/ me plus infant in this |
Answer: | Our bag holds 3 packing cubes, 2 pairs of shoes and a bag of toiletries. I am 5'5" and with all of the items I had difficulty placing the backpack on my back by myself. My husband didn't have any trouble putting it on and carrying around. I will say that once I got the bag on my back I didn't have any trouble walking around with it but again had trouble taking it off by myself. |
Question: | what is the difference between the Farpoint 70 and |
Answer: | 10 liters :PJoke aside, I own both an actually the 70 and 80 are completely different. The 70 is basically a 55 liter main pack with a zip on day pack that is 15 liters. The 80 is a full 80 liter main pack with no attached day pack, but you can get the Osprey Daylite which has attachment points (no zip on feature). Both the 70 and 80 have the same stowable harness system which is quite nice. The 70's zip on day pack I find a bit more convenient as a carry-on, as its just a bit quicker to take on and off, but its a matter of about 30 seconds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the backpack fit under an airline seat? The wire frame seemed too wide to fit under a seat when looking at it in store, especially a window seat |
Answer: | Yes, the women’s is smaller and comes in blue only the men’s bag only comes in black. |
Question: | If the small backpack is empty or just with the laptop but the cargo is full. Would it fit under an airline seat |
Answer: | This pack is not waterproof. However, it is somewhat water resistant due to the nature of nylon materials. If waterproofing is a concern, we would recommend purchasing a rain cover or utilizing a dry sack storage system. |
Question: | is this the men's version |
Answer: | The interior color is Electric lime and goes well with black exterior. |
Question: | Is it waterproof |
Answer: | Yes, it does. It's a small bag that fits in a section if the bottom front. I use it to store my mouse and cords. |
