13 best small animal treats
Small animal treats are special snacks designed for small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and mice. These treats can be a tasty addition to their regular diet and serve various purposes, including bonding with your pet, training, and providing additional nutrients. Here's what you should know about small animal treats:
Variety: Small animal treats come in various forms, including pellets, seeds, dried fruits, vegetables, nuts, and yogurt drops. The type of treat you choose should be appropriate for your pet's species and dietary requirements.
Nutritional Content: It's essential to select treats that are nutritionally balanced and appropriate for your pet's needs. Check the label for information on protein, fiber, fat, and sugar content to ensure the treat aligns with your pet's diet.
Portion Control: Treats should be given in moderation. Overfeeding treats can lead to obesity and other health issues in small animals. Follow the recommended serving sizes on the packaging or consult your veterinarian for guidance.
Training and Enrichment: Small animal treats can be useful for training purposes or as a form of environmental enrichment. For instance, you can use treats to reward desired behaviors or hide them in puzzle toys to stimulate your pet's mental and physical activity.
Freshness: Store small animal treats in an airtight container to maintain their freshness and prevent them from becoming stale or spoiled. Check the expiration date on the packaging and discard any expired treats.
Allergies: Be aware of any potential food allergies or sensitivities your pet may have. Introduce new treats gradually, and if you notice any adverse reactions, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian.
Safe Ingredients: Ensure that the treats you choose do not contain any harmful additives, preservatives, or artificial colors. Natural and wholesome ingredients are generally a better choice for your pet's health.
Dental Health: Some treats are designed to promote dental health by helping to wear down your pet's teeth. These treats may have a harder texture that encourages chewing, which can be beneficial for small animals with continuously growing teeth.
Species-Specific: Different small animal species have varying dietary requirements. For example, guinea pigs need vitamin C in their diet, while hamsters have different preferences. Choose treats that are suitable for your pet's specific species.
Supervision: Always supervise your pet while they're enjoying treats, especially if the treat is new or has a different texture. This ensures their safety and prevents choking or other accidents.
Small animal treats can be a delightful addition to your pet's routine, but it's essential to choose them wisely, considering your pet's health and dietary needs. When in doubt, consult with a veterinarian or a knowledgeable pet store associate for guidance on selecting the best treats for your small animal companion.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you think I could give these to my birds? I have three cockatiels and the ingredients seem fine, has anyone given them to birds |
Answer: | Dear Customer The bark watermelon ball is made of natural cedar wood without added flavor. Best Regards |
Question: | Are they suppose to smell like febreeze ? Mine do |
Answer: | I measured Mr. Snugs cage this am for you and the bars are exactly 1" apart, fine for an adult rat, but I think any babies could probably get through it. Otherwise, it's an awesome new habitat for my rabbit, especially the dual doors. My Old English Sheepdog wants to eat his food when I feed him, but having the second door on top, I can easy avoid this. Hope this helps |
Question: | The large rice pops have been changed to nasty critter pops. To any recent purchaser, is this still the same old kind |
Answer: | Depending on how small the ferret is. If its a average size ferret then yes it should work. I have had babies rabbits in it and not have a problem, so a ferret should do fine. |
Question: | Is this suitable for my guinea pig |
Answer: | Even if your bunny can stretch out it will not be "comfortable." The wire floor will be rough on it's feet and it won't have room to hop around significantly. Considering getting an exercise pen (30 or 36 inches should be plenty) in place of a cage. This will also make it easier to litter box train your rabbit (I use a large cat litter box, line it with newspaper and put hay on top of it). And still be sure to let your bunny out for exercise! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How are these for robo dwarfs |
Answer: | Degus do not regulate blood sugars as well as other rodents. You need to take care not to overfeed them or give them bad foods, otherwise their health can deteriorate quickly. So I would say no, this mix has a lot of treat type items in it so it may not be as healthy for your lil critter. |
Question: | are these suitable for robo dwarfs |
Answer: | NO. This mix contains sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, corn, and wheat, all things that rabbits don't digest well. Better treats for rabbits include fresh or dried fruits, like bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and apples, fresh or dried veggies, like peas and carrots, and fresh or dried herbs and flowers, like dandelions, chamomile, and calendula. You don't even need to buy them from the pet store - most of these are available at regular grocery stores. Just be careful that there isn't any added sugar, since fruits in particular are already high in sugar and anything with added sugar will be unhealthy for your bunny. |
Question: | Would guinea pigs like it? How long do one one of the sticks last usually |
Answer: | It shows you in the picture what kinds of fruits and nuts are in the food. enlarge the icon showing the back of package and read the ingredients |
Question: | how many is there |
Answer: | Hi, My chinchilla ate about 2/3rds of the items. I had to pick out the items he didn't like, or he would throw them out of his cage. There is nothing in it that a human can not eat, therefore, I can't see any reason not to feed your chipmunk! Good luck! Mickey |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried this on wild rabbits? We feed them regularly and I wouldn't mind spending $2 on a treat for them |
Answer: | I think the crunchy coat is put around a raw peanut. The peanut in the center is pale & not crispy/crunchy like a cooked/roasted one. My two guinea pigs love this treat. |
Question: | Is this treat okay for gerbils |
Answer: | Yes, they are safe for rats. In fact, my rats love them! I think they're tasty for the rats, but I think it's helpful for their teeth because they need hard stuff to gnaw on. |
Question: | after open bag how long to kept it |
Answer: | Yes, these treats are great for hamsters. So that we can answer other product questions you have please contact Ecotrition at [email protected]. |
Question: | Does this have pellets in it like their other kind? Or is it strictly the herby/veggy mix |
Answer: | Thanks for asking! These are specifically for small animals. We recommend getting a treat specifically for birds. For more help contact eCOTRITION at [email protected]. We are happy to help! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are they made of |
Answer: | I don’t know what you’re referring to, but you can get these for less than $5/bag at Petco!!! |
Question: | How many 2oz bags are there |
Answer: | I've never counted them. I give each of my two guinea pigs one to keep them busy while I clean the cage and go through a bag in just under a month. They really love them and they are very hard so it it s a good work out for their teeth. |
Question: | Can Dwarf Hamsters eat this |
Answer: | They are hard; definitely not chewy |
Question: | Can hedge hogs eat it |
Answer: | There’s nothing in them that would harm a baby bun. However, it is recommended that new foods be slowly introduced to baby buns, just like human babies. Six months is a bit long though. I would say by three to four months they can have them. I just rescued a baby who is about three months old and she won’t eat these. But then I just started introducing her to salad greens. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can Hamsters have these |
Answer: | Hey there! Most treats like this are NOT good for degus. Since they are so prone to diabetes it is important to be very careful about their diet. I would suggest any of the Oxbow hay biscuits as well as Gerber baby puffs and raw oats for treats! |
Question: | Are these ok for Conures |
Answer: | I buy these for my rabbit all the time! They don't expire. I have had them laying out for awhile before giving my bunny them. Even when they are open and one is taken out, it doesn't seem to effect the other one at all. I can say you are safe to buy them weeks ahead of time. |
Question: | vitacraft yogurt drops or ecotrition |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Are these ok for Sugar Gliders |
Answer: | The ingredients must be delicious cause my hamster loves them! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you feed wild bunnies this |
Answer: | It was safe and fun for my hamsters. Can't say for rats but would imagine so. |
Question: | Ok for a finch |
Answer: | I'm not sure, it's been a long time! Our Guinea Gizmos are very picky, and I trust Vitakraft Alfalfa Slims (which they love.) They however REFUSED this one. I do let them have some not so great things that are like junk food, but most of their beloveds come from Oxbow. :) |
Question: | Is this product made in USA |
Answer: | Corn isn’t safe at all for rabbits and guinea pigs. It cause blockage which can be deadly. |
Question: | Can you feed this to chinchillas |
Answer: | I would stick to only hay, veggies, and fruit for rabbits. A rabbit may be on the package but that doesn't always mean it's appropriate for that animal. The popcorn will get everywhere so its best to put it in a bowl, and place a bigger bowl over it. |

Answer: | The chews use natural food coloring so it is safe and non-toxic. |
Question: | Can this be used for a hedgehog |
Answer: | I wouldn't. The "peel" of the oranges was hot glued on. I wouldn't feed that to any animal. |
Question: | can u use it with a bunny |
Answer: | My sister has a bunny and we often buy the same chew toys for our pets (I have 2 guinea pigs). It's just a wood chew toy, so I think it should be fine :) |
