10 best hay for goats

Hay is an essential component of the diet for goats and plays a crucial role in maintaining their health and well-being. Here are some important points to know about hay for goats:

  1. Nutritional Value: Hay is primarily a source of fiber for goats. It provides essential nutrients like carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals. The nutritional content of hay can vary depending on factors such as the type of hay, growing conditions, and harvesting methods.

  2. Types of Hay: There are several types of hay that can be fed to goats. The most common types include:

    • Grass Hay: Such as Timothy, Bermuda, or Orchard grass hay.
    • Legume Hay: Like Alfalfa or Clover hay, which are higher in protein and calcium.
    • Mixed Hay: A combination of grass and legume hays, providing a balanced diet.
  3. Quality: The quality of hay is essential. Good-quality hay should be free of mold, dust, and weeds. It should have a fresh, green color and a pleasant smell. Avoid feeding goats poor-quality hay as it can lead to health issues.

  4. Feeding Schedule: Goats should have access to hay at all times, especially if they do not have access to pasture. They will eat hay throughout the day and night as needed.

  5. Supplemental Feeding: While hay is the primary source of nutrition for goats, they may also require supplemental feed, especially if they are lactating, pregnant, or growing. Consult with a veterinarian or a nutritionist to determine the right balance of hay and supplemental feed for your goats.

  6. Storage: Proper hay storage is crucial to maintain its quality.Store hay in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mold growth. Keep it off the ground and protect it from rain or moisture.

  7. Hay Types for Different Life Stages: The type of hay you feed may vary depending on the life stage of your goats. For example, young, growing goats may benefit from higher protein legume hay, while mature goats might do well on grass hay.

  8. Health Benefits: Providing good-quality hay ensures that goats have enough fiber in their diet, which is essential for healthy digestion. It also helps prevent issues like bloat and obesity.

  9. Quantity: The amount of hay goats need can vary based on their size, age, and activity level. As a general guideline, adult goats may consume 2-4 pounds of hay per day.

  10. Consultation: It's always a good practice to consult with a veterinarian or an experienced goat owner to tailor the hay and overall diet to the specific needs of your goats. They can provide guidance on the best choices for your particular situation.

Remember that goats' dietary requirements can vary, and individual goats may have different needs. Therefore, it's important to monitor your goats' health and adjust their diet as necessary to ensure they remain healthy and thrive.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it stay fresh for
Answer: Hi, great question! Our boxes keep your hay fresh! We preserve freshness and nutrients by packing our hay into a breathable box that prevents exposure to sunlight and allows more air to filter through. Competitors sacrifice quality during mass production resulting in stale, less nutritious feed for your animals. The worst enemies of hay are exposure to moisture, exposure to sunlight, and excessive handling. You've probably noticed that hay in big-box retailers is packed in plastic bags, which allow sunlight to get through and bleach the hay. Plastic bag storage also more easily damages hay during transit. Since we're shipping hay directly to you, these problems are avoided. Instead of putting the hay into bags, we put hay into sturdy boxes that protect it from sunlight and handling during transit. And since it is being shipped direct, it will never be at risk of losing its freshness. That's a win. If stored correctly in a cool, dry location, our hay and pellets will stay fresh for up to 12 months after purchase before losing any of the delicious smell or yummy taste. Thanks for your inquiry, Small Pet Select
Question: Is there any difference between what's sold through amazon and what's sold on smallpetselect.com
Answer: No. There is no difference.
Question: I've noticed lots of brown parts in this hay. Is that normal? It seems to get brown very quickly
Answer: Hay will have some brown in it which is normal, although the second cutting has been very consistent in containing very little brown. If you feel that the hay has an unusual amount of brown please contact us and we make sure to resolve right away, thanks.
Question: What kind of cutting is this? 1st, 2nd, or 3rd? What is better to give a rabbit
Answer: I've been buying timothy hay from Small Pet Select for about a year now. The cut depends on the time of year. They sell 1st cut and 2nd cut. This box was 2nd cut. It is still a much better quality then the local chain stores. And I love that it is delivered right to my house in a great storage box. They have a link on their page about the 1st and 2nd cut. http://smallpetselect.com/2nd-cut-timothy-hay-for-rabbits Hope this helps. :0)
