11 best horsefly repellent

Horsefly repellent is a type of product designed to deter horseflies and other flying insects from biting or bothering horses. These repellents are an essential part of pest control in equine care and help ensure the comfort and well-being of horses. Here's what you need to know about horsefly repellent:

  1. Purpose: Horsefly repellents serve the primary purpose of protecting horses from the annoyance and potential health issues caused by horsefly bites. Horseflies can be painful biters, and their bites can lead to discomfort and even skin infections in horses.

  2. Types of Horsefly Repellents:

    • Sprays and Lotions: These are the most common forms of horsefly repellents. They are applied directly to the horse's coat, typically on areas where horseflies tend to bite, such as the neck, withers, and legs. Some repellents need to be reapplied regularly, while others offer longer-lasting protection.
    • Roll-Ons: Roll-on repellents are similar to sprays but are applied using a roll-on applicator, making it easy to target specific areas.
    • Gels and Creams: These thicker formulations are often used for localized application and can provide extended protection.
    • Fly Masks and Sheets: In addition to topical repellents, fly masks and fly sheets provide physical protection by covering the horse's face or body and acting as a barrier against biting insects.
  3. Active Ingredients: Horsefly repellents contain various active ingredients that deter insects. Common active ingredients include pyrethroids, permethrin, citronella oil, and DEET. These substances are formulated to repel or kill flies upon contact.

  4. Safety Considerations: When using horsefly repellents, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Some products may not be suitable for certain horse breeds or individuals with sensitive skin.Additionally, avoid getting repellents in the horse's eyes, nose, or mouth.

  5. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of horsefly repellents can vary depending on the product, the concentration of active ingredients, and the local fly population. Some repellents may need to be reapplied after a few hours, while others provide longer-lasting protection.

  6. Complementary Measures: In addition to using repellents, horse owners may employ other strategies to reduce fly and insect exposure, such as maintaining clean stables, using fly traps, and providing shaded areas.

  7. Regular Application: To ensure continuous protection, horse owners often apply repellents regularly, especially during peak fly seasons or when horses are out in pasture.

  8. Environmental Considerations: Using environmentally friendly or non-toxic repellents may be a preference for some horse owners to minimize chemical exposure.

  9. Consulting a Veterinarian: If a horse exhibits signs of an adverse reaction to a repellent or if there are concerns about fly-related health issues, it's advisable to consult a veterinarian for guidance on appropriate products and treatments.

Horsefly repellents are essential tools in equine care, helping to keep horses comfortable and healthy by preventing the irritation and potential health risks associated with horsefly bites. Choosing the right repellent and using it correctly is crucial for effective pest control.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this applied? A dab for each area? The instructions aren't included with product information
Answer: The fragrance is mild. I don’t notice it at all.
Question: Can it be used on chicken wounds
Answer: You need to call customer service.
Question: could i lightly apply this to my dogs entire body? she gets darn near eaten alive by black flies while camping. thanks
Answer: Hello. Thank you for your question. ShowSheen products can not be used on cats because cats have very specific sensitivities. ShowSheen is formulated for use on horses, dogs, cattle, llamas, pigs, camels, goats, alpacas, and sheep. Thank you. - Absorbine
Question: Can I use on outside cat
Answer: It doesn't have a "strong" scent, but it does have a scent. It doesn't leave the fur oily. It does leave it silky smooth, once it dries. It doesn't take much. I spray it on my hands, rub them together, and then rub my hands on the cat. I use this product before cat shows, and find that it really works well.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it last after spraying around the doors
Answer: I think so, but you will see the amount of flies reach above the label if you have a large amount in container .
Question: Does this product also kill honeybees? It's for use on on dogs; indicates it kills fleas, ticks, and flies; also kills a zillion other critters
Answer: Yes you can dump the flies and reuse the container, but you would have to use new bait. You can get new bait on Amazon.
Question: Is this oil based
Answer: No, but if your problem with fruit flies is an indoor problem there is an easy, inexpensive solution. Just put some apple cider vinegar in a glass with some water (about a 50/50 mix) with a few drops of dish detergent. Set it next to where the fruit flies gather. You'll be surprised how many it will attract. It won't get all of them, but it'll get the majority of them. Just check the bottom of the glass occasionally and you'll see the little buggers laying there.
Question: Does this repel fleas
Answer: I have 4 dogs so we a lot of flys and it works well. Yes, I believe they will attract the green head flys , wherever there are fly’s , it will attract.

A Legacy More Than 125 Years in the Making

Every day at Absorbine is a celebration of a legacy that began with a truly extraordinary couple: Mary Ida and Wilbur F. Young.

A labor of love, they set out to find an alternative to the common 19th-century practice of “blistering” lame horses. Knowing there had to be a better, more humane way, Mary Ida developed a special blend of herbs into an essential oils tincture, and Wilbur rounded out the formula with a few more natural ingredients using knowledge he gained working part time for a pharmacist. The result of their teamwork is Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, which has been loved by horse owners for over 125 years.

Through the years we have stayed true to our mission to provide innovative, high quality animal care products. Our products are used by horse owners around the world, and we work hard every day to be The Horse World’s Most Trusted Name.

Question: Could this be sprayed on the yard and on concrete? We have a backyard bar area
Answer: I have no idea this is made for horses and that is what I use it for. Check with your vet or the manufacturer. It might be too irritating for a rabbit?
Question: Return if dosent work
Answer: From the list of ingredients I would think so. I only use it at the worst time of the season for them and just a dab behind the ears which they can't reach. The rest of the body I use an orange vest with built in bug repellent. It works most of the time but in some places they get so bad they dig right into the dog's ears and cause them to bleed. So this stuff keeps them off the ears.
Question: can this be used on dogs
Answer: This product works great no matter where your horses are. You feed it to them once a day and it goes through and kills the fly larvae in the manure. I have fed this for years. What also helps me is the fact there isn’t anyone very close to me with horses. I have very few flies. Hope it works for you
