5 Steps for Setup

Plug in filter, light hood, & heater using the 'drip loop' method (pg 65 in included guide). Rinse filter cartridge, remove insert from back of hood, add thermometer & heater to aquarium before use.

Add Fish after waiting 24 hours

Turn off light, unplug & remove hood. Place fish, while in bag from store, into aquarium for 20min. Open bag & add ½ cup of aquarium water every 5 minutes. Repeat once. Replace light hood and plug in.

Find Level Location

The aquarium should be placed and filled on a level, suitably-designed and appropriately-sized aquarium stand.

Add gravel, plants and decor

Rinse gravel, plants and decor. The gravel depth should measure 1” - 3” from the bottom. Cover the base of plants and bottom of decor items with gravel to hold securely in place.

Add room-temperature water

Fill aquarium with water to ½” from top of frame. Add water conditioner as directed.

Answer:	No heater. Also no gravel or plants. Just aquarium, hood, and water filter.

Answer:	No, it only has an on-off switch for the light. It is a very bright LED light so would probably be too much to use as a nightlight.
Question:	Is there a way to replace the blue LEDs with white or clear bulbs
Answer:	The guard around the part of the filter is a little rough. My betta would rub against it and it's fins would get a little torn. Never tried to take the guard off. After a couple of days my betta stopped going near it and it's fins were fine.
Question:	Where is the filter located inside of the assembled tank
Answer:	You don't have to buy those things to set it up and get started, it comes ready out of the box. however once you set it up those items are worth purchasing. After I set mine up I got a stick on thermometer wish is pretty cheap and easy to install and also a heater to control the water temp. You may or may not need a heater, depends on your average room temp and the temp specs of species of fish you have in the tank. For instances, if your fish need to be in water with a temp of around 75° and the room temp where the aquarium is located is on average around 75° you shouldn't need a heater. Answer:	You don't NEED a heater for a betta, though it will most definitely prolong his life. You could probably fit a VERY small heater in here, for roughly a 2-5 gallon. But keep in mind with such a small tank, it could overheat the water and harm your fish. If this is for a betta, I'd highly recommend getting at least a 2 or 3 gallon. Bettas die by stress and unfortunately, get stressed pretty easy. This would work fine as a temporary home or as a quarantine for when a fish gets fin rot, ick, or whatever it may be. Also, don't use the divider and DO NOT keep multiple bettas in here, even with the divider. Only good reason to use the divider is if you have two bettas you want to mate and are introducing them to eachother. Sorry for flooding info, hope this helps!

Step 1:

To prepare for setup, rinse your gravel and decor with water, do not use soap or chemicals.

Find a flat place, preferably on a manufactured aquarium stand (for warranty purposes), where there are limited light and heat sources.

Add gravel, creating an upward slant to add depth.

Step 2:

Do not plug equipment in until water has been added.

Fill the tank with water, which has been dechlorinated with AquaSafe, to roughly 75%-90%.

Decorate tank to your personal taste.

Step:3

Fill tank the rest of the way, again with water dechlorinated by AquaSafe.

You can now plug in all equipment safely.

To start your Whisper Power Filter it needs to be primed which is done by pouring dechlorinated water into the top reservoir of the filter.

Snap LED lights into hood and place your hood onto your aquarium, plug in.

Step 4:

After your heater and filter have had a few hours to run, you can safely add fish.

Start by floating your bag from the store in the aquarium until the temperature of the water in the bag is the same as the water in your tank.

Do not directly pour your fish into the aquarium as it may be dirty. Gently net your fish out of the store bag and add to aquarium.

Immediately add a bottle of SafeStart to begin cycling your aquarium.

Answer:	I called Marineland and they told me the only difference between the Portrait 5 gallon and the Contour 5 gallon is in the curvature of the lighting system. The lights themselves are identical (9 white LEDs and 6 blue LEDs). They also advised me that they are no longer making the Contour 5 gallon because except for the minor difference in the lighting structure they are exactly the same tank with the same filtration components. FWIW, I bought the 5 gallon Portrait and am very happy with it.

Question:	Is it possible that the filter cartridge included with the kit is too large? It does not fit in the housing
Answer:	It should fit across the little black cup filter. Basically when you inset, it should slide down middle and divide the cup. Water coming in bottom of one side them pushed up out of the cup on other side.
Question:	I was thinking about getting this for my dorm room next year? Do you think it will work? How often to you have to clean it
Answer:	It would be great for a dorm. It's only 1 gallon. It probably depends on what you put in it, how often you have to clean it. I have a single betta fish in mine, and probably clean it every 10 days to 2 weeks. I tend to over feed mine sometimes. I don't even use the filter in it because such a small area for such a lot of water movement... And on a couple of these, the lights stopped working after a while.

Answer:	a small under gravel heater would be all you needed for this tiny thing. With that the thin cord can fit up beside the filter with some squeezing. Anything bigger then the lid will have to be off.. but the lights will still be lovely :D

This will allow air to be pumped into the tank, yet prevent water from flowing back to the air pump in the event of a power failure or whatever. Question:	what kind of heater would be best for this tank for bettas
Answer:	Note that the response that states that Betas do not need a heater is absolutely incorrect. Betas are a tropical fish, and the optimal water temperature is 76-82 degrees F. Unless you live in a tropical climate and no not have air conditioning, room temperature in most instances will be far too cold, and will make the fish sluggish and prone to illness. Will it live for a couple months, yes. But under the right conditions, it can live years. Currently, I have a Beta in a 1-gal plastic tank (not this one yet, I'm looking to up-size) with a heater designed for Betas that will keep the water temp 10 degrees warmer than the room temp, which accounts for most people keeping their thermostat between 65-70 degrees. However, pay attention to the gallon rating of the heater. This is a 3 gallon tank, and will require a more substantial heater. I have never had any problem sticking the heater directly to the plastic. Think about it, the fish swims right by the heater. It can't get so hot as to melt plastic, or it would super heat the water in that area and cook the fish.
Question:	Can you use the bubbler without the lights
Answer:	Yes. The air stone gets fueled from the air intake which is on a separate electrical lead from the LEDs. Even if you don't use the lights, you still have to wrangle that wire out of the tank. The most difficult thing is keeping the air stone weighted down by the rocks. It came loose and floated up so many times that I stopped using it.
Question:	what size filters for Tetra 3 gallon
Answer:	The half moon tank comes with a small filter. I have 2 half moon tanks, and I love them! I have had mine going on 2 years. The filters will need to be renewed within a year to 1/12 yrs to keep your fish healthy.
Question:	Do you recommend to purchase live plants or silk plants for this tank? Do the live plants make the tank much dirtier
Answer:	I use live plants in all my tanks. Live plants give out oxygen, remove CO2, and depending on the fish they may also snack off of them. I have never had an issue with my live plants making my tanks feel dirty and since I have switched from silk to live I'd had a much higher survival rate with my fish. Just make sure you get hardy plants that can survive with regular indoor lighting or you'll have issues with them living in this tank without making modifications.

External Light Controller

• The first button is for changing light brightness: 100%-77%-55%-32%-10%.
• The second button is for shifting light modes: White LEDS, Blue+white+red LEDS, Red+ blue LEDS.
• The third button is for lighting time setting: there is an indicator light above it. Yellow -3 hours, green-6 hours, red- 12 hours. When it reaches to the set hours, the light will stay at the lowest brightness instead of turn off.
• The last button is on/off the light.

Answer:	5.5 and even the 10 gallon are not big enough for two or three goldfish. Goldfish produce more waste than the average fish and can get about the size of your hand. You can start off 2-3 one inch goldfish in a 10 gallon but will soon need to move them to a much larger tank.
