13 best reef tank sand
Reef tank sand is a type of aquarium substrate specifically designed for use in marine and reef aquariums. It plays a crucial role in creating a healthy and stable environment for the various aquatic lifeforms, including corals, fish, and invertebrates, found in reef tanks. Here are some key points about reef tank sand:
Composition: Reef tank sand is typically made from various materials, such as aragonite, crushed coral, or fine-grade calcium carbonate. These materials help maintain stable water parameters in the aquarium.
Calcium and Alkalinity: The composition of reef tank sand is chosen to help maintain proper calcium and alkalinity levels in the water, which are essential for the health and growth of corals and other reef organisms.
Buffering Capacity: Reef sand often has a high buffering capacity, which means it can help stabilize the pH levels in the aquarium water, preventing rapid pH swings that can harm reef inhabitants.
Grain Size: Reef tank sand comes in various grain sizes, from fine to coarse. The choice of grain size depends on the specific requirements of the tank's inhabitants. For example, fine sand is suitable for sand-sifting gobies, while larger grain sizes may be preferred for aesthetics.
Live vs. Dry Sand: Some hobbyists opt for "live sand," which contains beneficial bacteria and microorganisms that can help kickstart the biological filtration in the tank.Dry sand, on the other hand, is devoid of these microorganisms and needs time to become "live" as beneficial bacteria colonize it.
Depth: The depth of sand in a reef tank can vary depending on the tank's design and the types of organisms being kept. In general, a shallow sand bed of around 1 to 2 inches is common for reef tanks to prevent the buildup of detritus.
Maintenance: Reef tank sand requires regular maintenance, such as gentle stirring or sifting to prevent the formation of anaerobic pockets that can produce harmful gases. Vacuuming the sand bed during water changes helps remove debris.
Aesthetic Considerations: Hobbyists often choose reef tank sand based on its color and appearance to create a natural and visually appealing substrate for their aquariums.
Compatibility: When selecting reef tank sand, it's important to consider the compatibility with the tank's inhabitants, as some animals may have specific substrate preferences.
Reef tank sand is a vital component of a successful reef aquarium, as it contributes to water chemistry, filtration, and the overall aesthetics of the tank. Choosing the right type and maintaining it properly is essential for the health and well-being of the marine life in the aquarium.

User questions & answers
Question: | Any idea how much I need for a 29 Gallon tank with a 30 x 12 bottom? Planning on around 1 inch or so |
Answer: | You can use this for freshwater but it will kill the bacteria, but the sand would be fine to use. the one drawback though is it is aragonite sand, so a lower ph it could dissolve some and add too much calcium in your water. For saltwater you actually want some calcium to dissolve for the corals, but i don't think extra calcium would hurt anything in freshwater. |
Question: | I currently have a two year established tank with the fine Fuji pink and so badly want to change to this.. what’s the best way |
Answer: | This is supposed to cycle your tank instantly... if you have an ammonia spike then you need more live rock. The bacteria in this acts as a filter |
Question: | Would it be ok with burrowing invertebrates |
Answer: | The title is confusing on this item as "Special Grade Reef" and "Fiji Pink" are two totally different types of sand. Both are nice but the Special Grade is a bit bigger, if you go to there website you can see the differencehttp://caribsea.com/pages_caribsea/page_product_aragalive.html |
Question: | is this the 1-2mm grain size? I do not want the fine grain |
Answer: | Usually every bag comes with an expiration date , I assume the live bacteria will stay alive till that time keeping it at room temperature, when I placed my order of sand, mine had a expiration date for more than a year . So I'm sure they send you fresh packed sand. I completely recommend it. |

Question: | Can you use it in a fresh water tank |

Personally I do not go higher than 1", and i have a 1200 gal and a 650 gal. I used this sand in my sand filters (2). But for 5 gallons this should be plenty. |
Question: | the color is not white? when you say sandy. you mean yellowish? or pieces of coral shell whitish |
Answer: | This is a fine sand that's actually coral that's super crushed. It adds to snail shell hardness. I have a few Nerite and Apple Snails happily living with it, and it cleared up all of the old "soft water" shell weakness. |
Question: | can i use one one in 55 gallon |
Answer: | Yes, it instructs to rinse it first which would be wise. I didn't follow that step and had a very cloudy tank for the first week while it cycled. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this good for jawfish? Why would a 10lb bag be teice the cost of 20lbs unless this is tottally mislabeled? What the expiration dates |
Answer: | You can use it... I would recommend rinsing it and cycling your tank for a week, not adding it to a tank with existing fish. DO NOT use if you have an undergravel filter |
Question: | Can this sand be used for freshwater fishes |
Answer: | I really don't recommend it. It will cloud the tank severely and leave a powdery covering on everything. |
Question: | Is this fine sand |
Answer: | Assuming you’re adding a heater too, yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this different than the special grade Figi pink |
Answer: | It will be fine for a jaw fish. We list it for 29.99 there are fba sellers selling for 15 dollars more seller can list items for what ever price they want |
Question: | How much sand do I need for a reef think that is 24" wide 18" deep and 24" tall |
Answer: | You could use it but it would be a waste buying live sand because the sand has living organisms that would die in fresh water which defeats the purpose of buying live sand. If you are looking for a good Sandy substrate for freshwater o would recommend pool filter sand which has worked really well for me in my fresh water tanks |
Question: | Can I mix this with the fiji pink sand |
Answer: | Yes it is very fine |
Question: | The product description is confusing, is this the special grade size or the bimini pink size |
Answer: | You can- just rinse it. You can buy dry sand usually cheaper than “live” bc you’re pretty much paying for the live bacteria for a saltwater tank |

Question: | questions. Is this really"pink"sand? And will the bacteria stay alive in the bag for 2 months before i set up the tank |
Answer: | Beware anyone looking at this product: It is NOT Bimini pink! It’s actually “Bahamas Oolite“ but they cover the real name that’s printed on the bag with a sticker that says Bimini pink. They also cover up the original “best if used by“ date with another sticker that is a full year off. |
Question: | Can i use this in a brackish tank |
Answer: | Beware anyone looking at this product: It is NOT Bimini pink! It’s actually “Bahamas Oolite“ but they cover the real name that’s printed on the bag with a sticker that says Bimini pink. They also cover up the original “best if used by“ date with another sticker that is a full year off. |
Question: | My tank is 72” long 12” wide 21” deep , how much sands should I use |
Question: | Is this bacteria in the sand safe for hermit crabs |
Answer: | This is NOT Bimini Pink! My bag had stickers that said "Bimini Pink" but when I peeled off the stickers it was "Bahamas Oolite." Also, the "best if used by" date was covered with another sticker...the sticker said "Dec. 2022" but printed on the bag beneath the sticker was "Dec. 2021." I've bought at least a dozen bags of Bimini pink over the past 4 years so I know what it looks like. This AIN'T it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work for triops |
Answer: | The sand was a little pinker than the picture showed, so I added white to it to knock it back. The shelf life I believe was about 2 years when I got it, as long as the bag stays sealed. |
Question: | My sandbed is 1”. Is it okay to add this to an established tank with fish/coral |
Answer: | Yes, I used it in mine and both my fresh water tanks |
Question: | Whats the weight of the bag says shipping weight is 5.5lbs |
Answer: | depending on how deep you want you sand bed probably 80 lbs |
Question: | What’s the difference between this and the Fiji Pink? Just the color |
Answer: | Yes... it’s good bacteria you need to be biological filtration. If you’re keeping your hermit in a tank that’s not full of water but has dry sand (like a turtle tank), this sand is overkill. If you adding fish and hermits etc... in an aquarium, good choice. |

Don’t settle for an ordinary gravel. Natural dramatic colors and textures combined with pH support characterize our coralline and seafloor products. These are coarser materials suitable for most under gravel filtration and fish systems or as an accent for finer sands anywhere where elevated pH values are desirable. Consider the coralline products in brackish or cichlid aquariums (Central American or African). seafloor Puka shell substrates are great additions to fine sands in reef tanks where animals make their homes by burrowing in the substrate. Jaw fish, blennies and burrowing crustaceans will especially appreciate the extra “construction material.” our substrates are purposely engineered and free of impurities such as ash, metals, pesticides, and silica; which allows you to create a safe and beautiful environment for your fish and invertebrates. Precision grading makes system design a breeze! no matter what type of system you are setting up, we have the substrate that’s perfect for the filtration method and habitat you are creating.
