14 best aquarium stands
Aquarium stands are a fundamental component of setting up and maintaining fish tanks and aquariums. They serve as sturdy and stable platforms to support the weight of the aquarium, provide storage space for equipment and supplies, and enhance the overall aesthetics of the aquarium setup. Here's what you should know about aquarium stands:
Support and Stability: One of the primary functions of an aquarium stand is to provide reliable support and stability for the aquarium. Aquariums can be extremely heavy when filled with water, substrate, and decorations, so it's essential to choose a stand capable of bearing the weight without sagging or wobbling.
Material Options: Aquarium stands are commonly made from various materials, including wood, metal, and engineered materials like MDF (medium-density fiberboard). The choice of material can impact the stand's appearance, strength, and durability.
Wooden Stands: Wooden aquarium stands are popular for their aesthetics and versatility. They come in various finishes and styles to complement different room decors. However, it's crucial to select a stand made from water-resistant materials, as aquariums can be prone to splashes and spills.
Metal Stands: Metal aquarium stands are known for their strength and durability. They are often made from steel or aluminum and offer excellent support for heavy aquariums. These stands are less affected by moisture and are easy to clean.
Engineered Wood Stands: Stands made from engineered wood, such as MDF or particleboard, are a cost-effective option. They can look appealing and provide adequate support for smaller aquariums, but they may not be as water-resistant as solid wood stands.
Size and Weight Capacity: Ensure that the stand you choose is the right size and has the weight capacity to support your aquarium.Manufacturers typically specify the maximum weight the stand can hold.
Aesthetics: Aquarium stands are available in various designs, including contemporary, traditional, and custom options. Select one that complements your aquarium's style and the decor of the room.
Storage Options: Many aquarium stands come with built-in cabinets, shelves, or drawers. These storage features are useful for keeping aquarium equipment, supplies, and accessories neatly organized and out of sight.
Assembly and Installation: Consider how easy or complex it is to assemble and install the stand. Some stands require minimal assembly, while others may need more effort.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of the stand is essential to prevent damage from water splashes or spills. Regularly check for signs of wear and tear, and promptly address any issues to ensure the stand's long-term durability.
Weight Distribution: Ensure that the aquarium's weight is evenly distributed on the stand to prevent stress on specific areas. Placing a thin sheet of foam or rubber between the aquarium and the stand can help distribute the weight evenly and protect the tank's bottom.
In conclusion, aquarium stands are essential components for housing and displaying fish tanks and aquariums. They provide support, stability, and storage while enhancing the aesthetics of your aquatic setup. Carefully consider the size, material, and design of the stand to ensure it meets the needs of your specific aquarium and complements your home decor.

User questions & answers
Question: | IS this solid wood or particle wood with facing on the outside, will it hold a V twin engine? What is the max weight load |
Answer: | It's solid wood. At roughly 10lb per gallon (weight of water plus rocks and decorations) this stand is capable of holding at least 200 lbs on its top shelf. |
Question: | Is this large enough for a 20 gallon long tank? for reptiles, not fish |
Answer: | No. This is for a standard 20 gallon tall not the long. |
Question: | Can this hold two tanks? A 20g high on the top and a 10g on the lowest shelf? I would take off the middle one or not attach it |
Answer: | This is a well built stand and is very sturdy so I don't see why not. I probably would not put it on the middle shelf but the top and bottom shelves should not be a problem. |
Question: | how tall is the stand? how long and wide is it also? I see the dimensions, but which number is which measurement |
Answer: | it is about 30 inches high about 25 inches long and about 13 inches wide. this is a very strong stand when put together. didn't take me long at all to put 2 of them together. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the weight limit |
Answer: | 10 pounds per gallon is the general weight. My 40 gallon tank is(approximately) 400 pounds. This stand is sturdy and is designed for up to a 50-60 gallon tank. I’m satisfied with the design. |
Question: | How many doors for access and what size openings? Information provided contradictory, two doors or one door |
Answer: | theres only one door, right in the middle. its about a foot across. the back is open though (imagine 3 panels, but the first and third are missing), so you can route cables/plumbing in. |
Question: | is it all fiberboard or is there a metal frame? fiber board doesnt seem like it would be stong enough |
Answer: | Yes its all fiberboard. When I opened the box I thought the same way you do now. However they have it setup in a way where the weight is perfectly distributed. I have had my 55 gallon setup for over 2 months now and have not had a problem. |
Question: | well this hold a 80 gallon tank |
Answer: | No, Sorry this will not hold a 80 gallon tank. In the bullet points you can find the tank capacity of 55 gallons. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this hold a 30 or 40 gallon tank? It's going to be used for a hamster, not fish |
Answer: | Yes, it will |
Question: | Says in description that it holds 400lbs. A 55 gallon tank weighs 625lbs filled |
Answer: | A 55 full is 440lbs. I have my 55 setup on this stand for 6 months with no problems. |
Question: | What are the shelf dimensions |
Answer: | The exterior measures 50"W by 15 3/4" D by 30" H. The interior of each cabinet is 20"W by 22'H by 11"D This is a beautiful and very sturdy piece. |
Question: | Will it hold a 75 gallon tank, filled halfway full with water? About 30 gallons of water? Is there a reason it says 55 gallon stand |
Answer: | If the 75 gallon tank has the same length and width as a standard 55 gallon, then it should fit. I hold a full 55 gallon tank full of slate for mbunas, and an additional 4 gallon filter in one of the below shelves. She’s been pretty sturdy so far and can take the weight. I think they are giving you the most conservative estimate on weight so they aren’t liable if it fails... Also, look around... the same design is sold cheaper on amazon but got suckered into buying this one... |

Question: | Will this stand be wobbly if put on carpet |
Answer: | This stand is fine on my carpet. |
Question: | Support a fluval Evo 13.5 gallons |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could you put 3 stands on it? 2 10s and a 20 long |
Answer: | It would depend on the length of the tanks |
Question: | what are dimensions |
Answer: | The inside front to back dimension is going to be less than 12" so a standard 20L would not fit. IF you removed the back center support you could do it, but you would have to put the 20L in the stand before you put on the top aquarium, I do not believe that you could angle it into place through the front door. If you went with the 50/60/65 gallon "breeder" stand (36 x 18 x 29") you would have more than enough space in the cabinet and a 3+" ledge around the aquarium front and back. |
Question: | Is this preassembled |
Answer: | No its not pre-assembled but its pretty easy to put together....in fact my box didn't have the instructions and I was still able to put it together pretty quickly |
Question: | Will this hold a smaller tank as well |
Answer: | It will, also depend how wide the tank is. This stand is only 12” wide. So need to magure the tank first. |

Answer: | top is 25" by 15 3/4" |
Question: | What color is it? Black or brown? I can't tell by the photos |
Answer: | It's black. |
Question: | Can someone please give me the dimension of "inside" the cubbard |
Answer: | 14 deep x 16.5 wide x 12/5 high |
Question: | Is this stand water proof |
Answer: | This stand would not be suitable for an under water lair. However, if a liquid is spilt on it, the stand will not disintegrate. Furthermore, it would not make a suitable addition to an outdoor furniture arrangement. It will work nicely for an aquarium though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have this stand for my 29 gallon, and i want to add a second tank to the bottom, a 20gal tall. will this stand hold its weight |
Answer: | This stand's built like a Sherman Tank - Yeah, it will handle the weight no Problem- might need some wooden slots on the bottom shelf in order to to sit properly though -- P.S. Good luck with your new tank Paul |
Question: | can this support a 40 gallon |
Answer: | It is likely strong enough to hold that much weight, but I'm not sure I would like an aquarium on the stand that extends past the edges of the stand. It is really designed to hold a 29 or 20 Long aquarium. The stand is ~30" x 13". Since 40 gallon aquariums are either 36 x 18 or 48 x 13, I don't think this stand would work well with a 40 gallon. |
Question: | Would this stand be good for a 20 gallon long tank |
Answer: | Perfect for a 20 long- thats what I have on there now-I added wooden slots to middle and bottom for shelving |
Question: | Can a 20 long fit on the bottom rack |
Answer: | The bottom shelf will accommodate tanks no longer than approx 26" while requiring the same width of 13" as the top shelf. The vertical clearance is just under 25" tall, however the bottom shelf only gives two support bars (along the length of the tank) without the additional two along the width like the top surface does. I personally recommend that you add a piece of plywood or other strong surface over the bottom rails so that the weight of the aquarium is more evenly distributed. Remember, a 20 gallon aquarium will be around 200lbs when filled with water along with decor/equipment so it is best to offer even weight distribution. Even a tank of this moderate size could potentially develop of stress fracture when filled if unevenly supported, the risk of which increases even further if the aquarium already has microscopic fractures from rough shipping and handling. The addition of the extra base material will reduce vertical clearance even further so do not plan on having more than 24" available vertically. The maximum standard sized aquarium that will use the bottom spot most efficiently will be a 20H, however I would absolutely recommend adding a solid surface support (like plywood) as the exact width of a 20H varies by brand and can sometimes be less than 13", which further decreases support if placed directly on the bottom rails. The 20H is usually between approx 16-17" high, leaving you with about 7-8" clearance above the tank for lighting/hood as well as space for doing maintenance. If this feels too tight, reduce that tank size to a 15 gallon. It will have a footprint comparable the 20H but will only be about 12-13" high. Hope this helps. |
