3 best powerhead for saltwater aquarium
A powerhead is a crucial component in a saltwater aquarium setup, and it plays a significant role in maintaining water circulation, oxygenation, and overall water quality. Here's what you need to know about powerheads for saltwater aquariums:
Water Circulation: Powerheads are essentially submersible water pumps designed to create strong and directional water flow within the aquarium. They help simulate the natural currents found in the ocean, which is important for the health and well-being of the aquatic life in your tank. Proper water circulation ensures that nutrients and oxygen are distributed evenly throughout the aquarium.
Oxygenation: Powerheads can agitate the water's surface, increasing oxygen exchange between the water and the surrounding air. This is especially important in saltwater aquariums, as many marine species, including fish and invertebrates, require well-oxygenated water to thrive.
Eliminating Dead Spots: In large or irregularly shaped aquariums, there may be areas with stagnant water known as "dead spots." Powerheads can be strategically placed to eliminate these dead spots, preventing the buildup of debris and promoting a healthier environment for your marine life.
Water Filtration: Some powerheads come with filter attachments or can be used in conjunction with other filtration systems like sponge filters. This combination of water movement and filtration can help remove debris and suspended particles from the water, improving water clarity.
Temperature Regulation: In some cases, powerheads can be used in conjunction with heaters or chillers to help distribute temperature evenly throughout the aquarium. This is especially important for maintaining stable water conditions for temperature-sensitive marine organisms.
Adjustable Flow: Many powerheads come with adjustable flow rates, allowing you to fine-tune the water movement to suit the needs of your specific aquarium setup and the preferences of your aquatic inhabitants. Some species prefer stronger currents, while others thrive in calmer waters.
Placement: Proper placement of powerheads is essential. They should be positioned to create a gentle but effective flow without causing excessive turbulence that could stress or harm your marine life.Experimenting with placement and flow settings may be necessary to achieve the desired circulation pattern.
Size and Wattage: When choosing a powerhead, consider the size of your aquarium and the specific requirements of your marine species. It's important to select a powerhead with an appropriate flow rate and wattage for your tank's volume and inhabitants.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the longevity and efficiency of your powerhead. Cleaning the impeller and any associated filter media, as well as checking for blockages, should be part of your routine aquarium maintenance.
In summary, a powerhead is a vital component in a saltwater aquarium setup, responsible for creating water movement, oxygenation, and filtration. Properly selected and positioned powerheads contribute to the overall health and well-being of the marine life in your aquarium by replicating natural ocean currents and preventing dead spots while enhancing water quality.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it only stick to glass |
Answer: | You'll always need to make water for water changes so buying in bulk saves money. if you go to the web site it will tell you the exact amount per gallon |
Question: | Are there two separate power cords |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this to make drinking/soaking water for tropical land hermit crabs. Just be sure they always have TWO WATER DISHES - one with de-chlorinated fresh water and one with brackish or salt water such as this. The dishes need to be deep enough for them to fill their shells with water if they want, but must have sponge or some driftwood in them for easy access in and out. Few people realize they need salt water as well as fresh, kudos to you for inquiring! If you know which species you have, you should google to find out any specific quirks or requirements. |
Question: | Does it only stick to glass |
Answer: | Typically, we recommend starting with 1/4 cup of salt to one gallon of water. This is half the amount used to make full marine conditions. You will need a hydrometer or refractometer to test the salinity. You need 1.010 - 1.015. |
Question: | Is one too strong for a 20g tank |
Answer: | Seriously, I bought three, got one free. |
- Adjustable flow speed(press the “speed” button) and frequency(rotate the dial). Easy to achieve multiple sea wave with a simple controlling panel.
- Power consumption to 40 W, Max flow: 3400 GPH, Recommended for 50 inch /60-150 gallon tank.
- Low voltage 24 V DC Safe power supply. One touch feed mode.
- Strong Magnet-suction cup base makes it easy to positioning the pump in the aquarium.
- Quiet operation, ideal for marine, freshwater or tropical aquariums.
User questions & answers
Question: | can anyone post an item number or link for a foam sleeve that will fit this |
Answer: | I do not know of one but mine has not had one for a long time now. It so big the intake velocity is reasonable. |
Question: | Will this work/connect to an existing Jebao RW-8 powerhead |
Answer: | Probably |
Question: | Will 2 of these pumps be sufficeint for a 135gl sps tank |
Answer: | I would think so. I bought one for my 300 gal tank and been very pleased with it. They are powerful pumps. |
Question: | can I sync 2 pumps together with this system |
Answer: | Don’t think so. Try to see if there’s an explanation about that |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you link two pumps/controllers together like other wavemakers so they work together |
Answer: | The best way to inflate your floating island is with an electric pump, similar to the type you'd use for inflatable mattresses. |
Question: | Why up to 25 gal tank only if it can pump up to 1600 gph |
Answer: | Do not exceed 1000 pounds |
Question: | Is the 2600 GPH a directional head |
Answer: | No only the center was. But the part where you climb onto didn’t last long it ripped on both sides at the seams. It’s the middle part between the two loungers. |
Question: | Will this be too powerful for a planted 10 gallon with substrate |
Answer: | I have not had it in the water yet. Bought a cordless pump for it to get it down to the lake. Float is very heavy and made of a very thick plastic. |
