12 best sun canister filter
there isn't a widely recognized or specific product known as the "Sun Canister Filter" in the context of aquarium filters. It's possible that new products have been introduced since then, or there might be variations in product names.
However, canister filters for aquariums are a common and effective means of maintaining water quality in fish tanks. Canister filters are typically placed outside the aquarium and consist of a sealed container (the canister) filled with various filter media. Water is pumped out of the aquarium, passes through the filter media in the canister, and then the filtered water is returned to the tank.
Key features that can often be associated with canister filters, including those from various brands, might include:
Mechanical Filtration: Removes solid particles from the water, such as uneaten food and debris.
Biological Filtration: Promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria that help break down harmful ammonia and nitrites.
Chemical Filtration: Some canister filters may include space for chemical filter media to remove impurities or alter water chemistry.
Adjustable Flow Rate: Allows users to control the speed at which water is filtered.
Easy Maintenance: Many canister filters are designed for easy disassembly and maintenance.
Quiet Operation: Canister filters are often appreciated for their relatively quiet operation compared to some other types of aquarium filters.
When looking for a canister filter, it's important to consider the size of your aquarium, the types of fish you have, and the specific filtration needs of your setup. Additionally, reading product reviews and consulting with experienced aquarium hobbyists can provide valuable insights into the performance and reliability of different filters. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and maintenance.

Question: | can I order the media basket the filters are placed in |
Answer: | yes I believe you can order replacement baskets from Amazon. |
Question: | Hello. is there sunsun hw-304b 220v |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Does anyone have a problem getting this to work in a tank that isn't full? I filled the tank to prime then removed water & it stopped working |
Answer: | You definitely want to pre fill the filter before starting it up (if you cant prime it hoses might be mixed up-suction return lines) I would also make sure the return tube is fully submerged at the top of the water. I personally have three 304b filters, one of them gives me issues like yours if the outlet tube isn't covered with water. |
Question: | How do i know if my uv light is working? i put the filter together recently but i don't know if the light is turning on |
Answer: | There's a little round button nest to the on off switch. It is actually not a bitton so dont press down on it. It is a window that will show when the light inside the filter is on. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the tube ID dimension |
Answer: | With hoses attached it would be very, very tight if it was me I would not use this cabinet. You need no less than 22 to 23 inches in height. |
Question: | I live on the 2nd floor in an apartment building. We have frequent power outages that last from 2 seconds to .5 hour. Will this leak all over |
Answer: | Yes it does but you must use the internal pump for the sterilizer to come on . |
Question: | Why can't I find sunsun 704b replacement parts |
Answer: | I put the bio balls in first. then the ceramic. finally the filter pads in the same layer. i only use 3 stages leaving room for something else like carbon bags. i love mine it works great.. very quiet so when you start to hear a very minimal hum coming from your tank it is time to clean it. and finally make sure you have a towel with you when cleaning it you will lose a very small (2-4 ounces) amount of water when you disconnect it. |
Question: | What is different from the sunsun hw304B? Other than the shape of course |
Answer: | No, the flow can't be adjusted. Actually it doesn't even have a power switch but turns on by unit being plugged into electrical outlet |

Specifications: Maximum output: Approx. 1600 GPH inlet/outlet hose adapter: 3/4", 1 1/4" dimensions: Voltage: 110-120v 60hz UV power: 13w suitable for ponds with small mix of fish and koi up to: Approx. 900 gal suitable for decorative ponds up to: Approx. 1600 gal the CPF-pressure pond filter series is among the latest generation of pond filters, combining in a compact system, a high-performance bio-mechanical filter along with the most modern UV technology. The filter is unremarkably dug in at the edge of the pond. The compact way of construction makes the pond technology almost completely disappear. Any and all connections as well as the whole field of technology are found in the top cover. The pond filter can be dug in without any problems. The pond water can be pumped to higher-located waterfalls and from this point return into the garden pond. The pressure pond filter ensures a stable, biological balance and improves the water quality. Along with the appropriate pump (not included in the supply, please note the pond pump´s maximum volume capacity), this ensures for clear water, thus creating healthy surroundings for the pond inhabitants. Operation pressure pond filters with integrated UV unit are the combination of biological and mechanical filtration and contribute to the effectiveness by a UV-c pond clarifier. Due to their UV radiation, UVC pond clarifiers alternate the algae proteins´ tertiary and quaternary structure which causes their destruction. The algae's clump, thus forming large parts of particles that can be easily removed from the water circulation by the mechanical pond filtration of the pond filter. During the bio-mechanical cleaning microorganisms accumulate inside the filter and remove germs and bacteria from the water. By the way of mechanical filtration, floating particles and dirt remain in the pond filter and do not return into the pond water.
- Biological and mechanical filter chambers for more efficient removal of dissolved and solid waste
- Simple quick handle cleaning system for easy maintenance (no need to open and clean foams all the time)
- Enables rapid growth of aerobic bacteria resulting in removal of lethal ammonia and nitrite
- Able to cope with higher water flows compared to traditional gravity filters
- Complete with inlet and outlet hose adapters.Outlet/Inlet hose adapter 3/4 inches~5/4 inches
User questions & answers
Question: | I am having trouble getting the nut off the quartz tube to clean it and see what size bulb to order. I'm afraid of breaking the tube. Can anyone hel |
Answer: | I've not tried this yet but here is a youtube link. Looks like the nut is just a locking ring so don't be afraid to muscle it off. Then the Tube can be twisted off once the locking ring is removed .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq97-f5FckQ |
Question: | Is it submersible? Or does it have to stay out of the water |
Answer: | It stays out of the water |
Question: | Can you adjust the output on the filter |
Answer: | As far as limiting the flow, no you can't. You'd have to buy a pump that limits the output via flow adjustment. I can say temporarily I am running this though a 300-500GPH pump and it works just fine. |
Question: | How effective is the cleaning system? Do the filters have to be removed a few times per month and cleaned or not |
Answer: | For the longest time I've been convinced that a pond was just like a boat; the expense, aggravation and endless hours that go into maintaining one is simply the norm....but that all changed last year when I got the Grech filter!A cold snap in early November 2013 got the best of a friend's filter, splitting it wide open (thankfully!). Being on a budget he decided to take a chance and replace his old filter with the Grech CPF-2500. I'm glad he did because after seeing how well the Grech worked for his pond, I purchased one for myself! (I chose the CPF-5000 with the 18 watt UV bulb because I have a pretty large pond). These Grech filters are by far the best either of us has ever had! Not only does it out perform some of the pricey "dealer" filters like those that I had, it also requires less maintenance than some of those more expensive brands. I've used the Grech for almost two full seasons now and not only has it cut the amount of bio/enzymatic cleaners, clarifiers and algae control additives I need to use in half, the time I spend on pond maintenance has been cut by at least 80%! The filter is a little complicated to assemble the first time around. It's equally as complicated and also time consuming to break it all apart to do a full cleaning (especially the CPF-5000 as it has seven layers of filters). That said, you might only need to fully disassemble it for cleaning once in a seven/eight month season...and that's at the end of season!! I opened the pond using the Grech for the first time in 2014 and in record time (less than two weeks) the water was the clearest it had ever been....and without a single full filter cleaning!! I wasn't having any noticeable issues with water quality or flow but after running it from the open for over two months straight without a full cleaning, I just felt like it was too good to be true so I took on the dreadful task of pulling it apart. I quickly learned that 1) I probably could have waited longer to clean it and 2) totally dismantling the filter cartridges to clean it mid-season is completely unnecessary! Just like last year, I again only did one mid-season cleaning for all of 2015. This time I waited until I felt like the water flow seemed a little slower (three to four months after opening). This time I did not disassemble the filters from their cartridges and instead simply hosed them down really well, coming them from all sides. I also pressed each filter down to the center several times on each side to wash out the deep down crud while hosing. It worked perfectly and only took about 20 minutes start to finish. The backwash and self cleaning system for this filter is genius! The filter pads are shaped like cogs with notches around the outer edges. Connected to the cleaning handle is triangle shaft that goes the entire length of the filter which fits tightly into the notches on the filters. When cranking, the shaft uses the notches to rotate all the filters at one time while simultaneously pressing down into each filter and squeezing out the surface crud which then gets washed away through the backwash valve. Brilliant! I always clean in sets; 15-20 full cranks clockwise then 15-20 full cranks counterclockwise, waiting for the water to run clear before changing directions. I repeat the sets until the the water is no longer thick and dark while cranking. At the opening I did this every couple days until the pond was clear, after that weekly seems to be okay. It might take you 3 or 4 minutes each time. I'm closing, this is hands down the best filter ever!! |

Question: | Can the hw 602b be used as a pre filter for hw 704b |
Answer: | Absolutely! I use as a pre filter on my canister & it works great...don’t have to clean the main canister out as often! |
Question: | Whats the tubing (hose) size |
Answer: | 1/2 inch |
Question: | Is there any room in the filter for bio balls or ceramic rings |
Answer: | Yes, there could be. The interior consists of 2 plastic "separators" that create a space above the bottom of the filter and below the top of it; in between the separators fit the three colored sponge disc filters that you see in the photos. You could fit your favorite small-sized bio-medium in one of these spaces, outside the separators, or even remove one of the sponge filters for even more space. I did that in order to add activated charcoal to mine.Note, however, that once it gets up and running for a few weeks, the sponge discs do act as a substrate for biofilm, and you'll have biological filtration even without a specialized medium. |
Question: | Hi! What size is the tubing that comes with the filter? Thanks |
Answer: | Hello, the dimension of the hose is 1/2” Inside Diameter (I.D.), 5/8” Outside Diameter (O.D.), thank you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be good in a 40 gallon breeder tank ? With sand ? Or should I just stick with 2 power filters |
Answer: | I have two of these filters and I use one in a 55 gallon tank with pea gravel and it works perfectly. The other I use in a 100 gallon indoor pond and the water is crystal clear. |
Question: | Can you use this filter for lower water level tanks such as turtle tanks |
Answer: | I use this in my 55 gal turtle tank which has about 7" of water in it. I had to tape up the intake pipe joints to reduce air leaks and I had to manually prime the intake line to get it to start but it does work fine once the siphon gets started. I'm going to drill the tank below the water level and convert it to gravity fed because it's a real pain to get started due to the vertical distance the water has to travel to leave the tank. |
Question: | Can I use this in a half full tank? I have a 20gallon long breeder tank a little over half full, about 11 or 12 gallons |
Answer: | There is plenty of power in the pump but you will have to make some modifications to the fittings in order to extend the height in the tank. I set mine up for turtles and was able to get the water level 5 inches below the rim with the firings provided. |
Question: | Can I use this on a 45g reef tank |
Answer: | Yes it will work. But canister filters will harbor nitrates if not cleaned every week. A good protein skimmer and good water flow is much better for salt water. I would recommend a hang on back filter just to clear the debris and clarify the water as needed, it doesn't have to run constantly. Canister filters are not needed for reef aquariums. I bought this canister for my freshwater fish tank and it's decent for that. |

Answer: | You can use any filter rated for 30 Gallons+, so this filter, rated for a 75 gal tank, will work. More flow and filtration of water will not hurt your fish. The water will be very clean and your fish will be okay. However, be aware that extra filtration (i.e. a filter for a 75 gal tank on a 30 gal aquarium) will filter-away weekend feeder tabs faster than a filter rated for a 30 gallon tank, so if you plan extended travel, have an auto-feeder (or a friend) to ensure your fish do not starve. I learned this one the hard way :( |
Question: | where can you buy the drain trays |
Answer: | Online. Probably Amazon! 😲😲😲🤔🤔🤔 |
Question: | is this the same a as an Aquatop or a SunSun |
Answer: | I'm not sure if it is exactly the same as the SunSun, but I can tell you that this has been an excellent filter! I have 2 very large (dirty, ammonia emitting) goldfish in a 55 gallon, and my water is completely clear and sparkling! The directions to set up were pretty much impossible to figure out, but it is so easy and logical, I really didn't need them. Took me a while to figure out that the thing coming up from the intake tube is a skimmer that pulls the oils and debris from the surface. There are 4 trays that hold a lot of filter media. It is very quiet... I can't even hear it in the cabinet under my tank. I like this one because the UV light is removable for replacement without disassembling the whole thing. Tip: when you fill it with water to prime it, leave enough room to push the top down to clip. I didn't and it overflowed. It would have been nice to know that since I've never used a canister filter before. Just get it close and use the primer manual pump to finish when it is turned on. Hope this helps! |

Product description
Canister Filters provide superior filtration ideal for larger or heavily-stocked aquariums. Suitable for use with freshwater or saltwater aquariums, canister filters maximize filtering capacity by taking advantage of their large filter body. Canister filters are used by fish enthusiasts who need superior mechanical, biological and chemical filtration in large aquariums that house their fish. Canister style external filter offers a greater quantity of filter materials to be used along with a greater degree of flexibility. Water enters the canister filled with the chosen filter material through an intake pipe at the bottom of the canister, passes through the material, and is fed back to the aquarium through the return pipe. Water is forced to circulate through the filter by a pump inside the canister. External canister provide a high volume of filter material without reducing the internal space in the aquarium, and that they can be disconnected from the tank for cleaning/maintenance and replaced without disturbing the aquarium interior or occupants.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long of warranty is there? Mine leaks thru top |
Answer: | I have no idea. However I have seen on forums that if you contact the seller or manufacturer that they are very responsive. For me I got annoyed while standing in five gallons of water and bought a Fluval. Good luck. |
Question: | Dose filter come with Filter pads |
Answer: | It comes with 3 thin pads you will definitely need to buy ...more filter pads or cushion/padding to put inside cause the stuff that comes with it is useless |
Question: | I have 3 parts remaining, a small elbow and a 2" tube and a 4-5" tube w/ a nut type end on it. Where do these go? The instructions are worthless |
Answer: | I just used the end of the tube with the end filter. Didn't use the elbow...works straight tube and connecting tube with flixter at the end |
Question: | How well does it do with a 100 gallon tank |
Answer: | It worked on my 125 aquarium. I also had a corner sponge filter as well. If your worried go to the next level higher but at 375 gallons you have more than enough. This is also the same unit as the aquatop uv400 but this is the chinese branded. |
Product description
Aqueon QuietFlow Canister Filters are designed for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. The canister is preloaded with biological, chemical and mechanical media to efficiently remove waste and harmful toxins from water. Additional replacement filtration media is also available. Included is a unique hang on the back water polishing unit that makes maintenance quick and easy. Instead of disassembling the canister housing to replace the contents of the media basket, simply replace the carbon cartridge. This cuts down maintenance time and means less frequent changes to the media baskets. If a traditional water return method is preferred, i.e. spray bar or water director, the connections and outputs are included.

Question: | How wide is the finishing unit that mounts on the tank |

Question: | Do I need to take the charcoal out of the net baggie it in, or leave it in |
Answer: | When I first got this filter, I took the charcoal out of the bag. After a while I decided to try leaving it in the bag, and it appears to be working just fine. I'm a bit of a chemistry freak when it comes to my aquariums, and when I decided to try leaving the charcoal in the bag, I noticed no different readings on Ammonia, Nitrites, or Nitrates. And a big plus to leaving the charcoal in the bag is that it makes cleaning and maintenance of the filter so much easier. Just rinse out the bag with the charcoal in it and plop it right back into the filter. When it's time to change out the charcoal, throw the old bag away and replace it with a fresh bag of charcoal which are readily available here on Amazon. |
Question: | Watts used |
Answer: | 110 |
