7 best dog breed tests
Dog breed tests, also known as canine DNA tests, are a popular tool for dog owners and breed enthusiasts to gain insights into their pet's genetic makeup. These tests use DNA analysis to identify the specific breeds present in a dog's ancestry, helping owners understand their pet's heritage, traits, and potential health issues associated with certain breeds. Here's some information about dog breed tests:
Breed Identification: The primary purpose of a dog breed test is to determine a dog's genetic composition and identify the breeds that make up its heritage. This can be particularly useful for mixed-breed dogs, where their physical appearance may not provide clear clues about their ancestry.
Health Insights: Some DNA tests also provide information about potential health risks associated with specific breeds. For example, certain breeds are predisposed to certain genetic health conditions, and knowing a dog's genetic makeup can help owners take preventive measures.
Behavioral Insights: Some tests claim to provide insights into a dog's behavior and personality traits based on its breed makeup. However, the accuracy of such claims can vary, and it's important to rely on the test's reputation and scientific validity.
Parentage Verification: DNA tests can also be used to verify the parentage of a dog, which can be important for breeders who want to ensure the accuracy of pedigree records.
Mixed-Breed Dogs: For owners of mixed-breed dogs, breed identification can be particularly intriguing. These tests can reveal unexpected breed components, shedding light on a dog's physical characteristics and potential behavioral traits.
Testing Process: To perform a dog breed test, owners typically collect a DNA sample from their dog's cheek or gums using a swab provided in the test kit. They then send the sample to a laboratory for analysis.
Results: Once the analysis is complete, owners receive a detailed report outlining the dog's breed composition. This report may also include information on health risks, genetic markers, and potential behavioral traits.
Accuracy: The accuracy of dog breed tests can vary depending on the company and the quality of their database. Some tests are more reliable than others, so it's important to choose a reputable provider.
Cost: The cost of dog breed tests can vary widely, with some basic tests being relatively affordable and more comprehensive tests costing more.
Privacy Concerns: Some people have raised concerns about the privacy of genetic information provided by these tests, as the data could potentially be used for research or other purposes. Be sure to review the privacy policy of the testing company before purchasing a kit.
Overall, dog breed tests can be a fun and informative tool for dog owners who want to learn more about their pets' genetic makeup, potential health risks, and breed-related traits. However, it's important to choose a reputable provider and keep in mind that the accuracy of these tests may vary.

User questions & answers
Question: | There are two swabs that come with the kit, so can we test two dogs at the same time or do two separate kits need to be purchased |

Question: | Does this test cover wolf |
Answer: | The test does not cover wolf detection. Get a different test. |
Question: | My dog just died, would it work to rehydrate his saliva in his water bowl and swab from there |
Answer: | Sorry for your loss. I don't think this answer will help you now since it has been about 11 weeks since your original question and I'm not sure if the saliva DNA is still good after that long, But hopefully this may help someone else who has the same question about their deceased dog. On the DNAmydog.com website they now have a DNA test for deceased dogs for $157. They need anything that the dog chewed on or had oral contact with. chew toys, (unwashed) blankets they chewed on, toothbrush, etc.. Here's the link : http://dnamydog.com/dna-deceased-dogs.php You may want to call them (416-691-4160) just to be sure you can't still send them something and get some results. |
Question: | How quickly do you get the results |
Answer: | I submitted the sample on 4.29 and received the results 5.19. My puppy was a rescue, and on our first visit to the vet she guessed he was 8 weeks old and an Akita /Australian Shepherd mix. The Mars test confirmed that he was a first generation cross of those two breeds, so kudos to my vet! (Boo to the sociopath that left my perfect and gorgeous puppy in a dumpster.) |
