I have 2. You have to be careful when working with it that you don't push the ball in too much. I wash mine every day with hot water run through the tube and gently rollling the ball around. Then, after clipping it in place, I give it a very tiny push, and roll the ball just a bit and that releases a few drops of water. I have one dog who empties almost the whole thing and one that won't touch it. I have switched their bottles with same result. It is possible that if your dog licked harder, it would release the ball, but chooses not to!

Question:	Can I reverse the door so it opens the other side
Answer:	I have a teething puppy, and I have had the cover for about a month. He has chewed on a couple of the straps, but they have held up so far. Mine really likes to chew on the thin strip of fabric between the two openings. If you keep the side one zipped up, it is more difficult for the dog to chew.
Question:	Is this large enough for a german shepherd
Answer:	Yes it can be used with an end door. My crate only has an end door and it works great.
