Answer:	It’s not the “meal” that’s the problem—like another poster said, “meal” is added to give more protein at a lower price than solid, full meat. What you’re right to be concerned about is BY-PRODUCT MEAL, which is not specific. But if it’s “turkey meal” or “salmon meal”, that’s specific enough to not be a concern. If you are feeding your cat (or dog, for that mayter) dry kibble food, you’re 99% likely going to have some sort of “meal” in the food you feed. If you truly don’t like “meal”, even a specifically sourced one, you may have to go with the more pricey options of making your own food from scratch, all wet food (which may still have some sort of meal in it), rehydrated freeze-dries pouches, wet pouches, or the refrigerated stuff at pet stores.

They have invested millions and millions of dollars over the last 50 years in research and feed trials. Merrick, Blue Buffalo, Fromm, etc. have done diddly to contribute and instead rely upon marketing/fads and Purina's research. So even if Purina had bought Merrick, it would certainly not be a bad thing. Just wanted to point this out because it is sadly overlooked by the types that tend to hysterically jump on whatever new trend exists, regardless of whether or not there is anything scientifically behind it (see: preliminary FDA findings on grain-free dog food and heart disease).

Question:	I have an senior cat, 19yrs old, and she has become very picky on or wet food choices, she prefers alot of "gravy" vs chunks does Merrick carry
Answer:	I would have her gums and teeth checked first. She may have tender gums and that is why she prefers gravy consistency. the general advice about wet cat food I have read and researched is that gravy content is not as good because it has higher carb content and what cats need is protein with no or very little carb. content. Cats are basic meat eaters and usually get no carbs from their natural diet. My Occi cat developed a diabetic onset from years on a dry food with higher carb. formula. After converting to a wet high protein diet, his blood sugar reading dropped immediately and has remained normal for two years now. I would suggest using a Merrick pate' (chicken or surf & turf ) and add water to the pate' mashing it up with a fork into a wet paste. Cats normally get a majority of their water intake from their food, and your senior will think she is eating a gravy and still getting a healthy hi-protein diet. You will likely see an improvement in her coat and activity level. I am not a vet but gained info merely having researched feline diet on the internet. catinfo.org is a great place to see a listing of best and worst commercial cat foods.
