10 best flea prevention for cats
Flea prevention for cats involves various methods and products to protect them from flea infestations. Fleas can cause discomfort, skin irritation, and transmit diseases, so preventing fleas is essential for the health and well-being of your cat.Common methods of flea prevention for cats include the use of flea drops, flea and tick control products, and maintaining a clean living environment.
Flea Drops (Topical Flea Treatments):
- Flea drops, also known as spot-on treatments, are liquid substances applied to the back of a cat's neck, which then spread over the skin and fur. They contain active ingredients that kill fleas upon contact and provide protection for a specified period.
- These treatments are usually applied monthly and are highly effective in preventing fleas and sometimes ticks. The active ingredients typically include substances like fipronil, imidacloprid, or selamectin.
- It's essential to choose a flea drop product that is specifically formulated for cats, as using products intended for dogs can be harmful to felines.
Flea and Tick Control Products:
- There are various forms of flea and tick control products available for cats, including collars, oral medications, and sprays.
- Flea collars release chemicals that repel and kill fleas and ticks. They are worn around the neck and provide protection for a certain period.
- Oral medications are typically given once a month and contain active ingredients that kill fleas and sometimes ticks after ingestion.
- Flea and tick sprays are applied directly to the cat's fur and skin. They provide immediate protection and can last for several weeks.
Regular Grooming and Cleaning:
- Regular grooming of your cat, including brushing and combing with a flea comb, can help in early detection of fleas and their removal.
- Keeping your cat's living environment clean by regularly vacuuming carpets, upholstery, and bedding can reduce the likelihood of a flea infestation.
Consulting a Veterinarian:
- Before using any flea prevention products, it's advisable to consult a veterinarian to determine the most suitable and safe options for your cat, especially if your cat has underlying health conditions or is pregnant/nursing.
Remember to always follow the instructions on the product label and consult your veterinarian for the best flea prevention plan for your cat.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this 6 month supply a 6 pack of tubes |
Answer: | Hi Doreen... Actually, I bought the 4 pack because I have four cats. I had earlier in the month bought a 4 pack someplace else, so I had two treatments for each cat. I did the treatments three weeks apart (the instructions say it is OK to do if you wait seven days). I bought the 9+ lb. package as three of the cats are well over that weight. One cat is a bit smaller and I didn't use quite all of the tube on her. None of the cats had any bad reactions, and it worked well for three of them. The other cat (partial Maine Coon) had some results, but not so good. |
Question: | Does this kill ticks? If not, what do people recommend for ticks |
Answer: | To get rid of fleas and ticks use Frontline Plus. I started to use it on mine a year ago it killed the ticks and fleas. I reapply it every other month and I haven’t seen one since. |
Question: | When using this medicine, do I also need to flea bomb or spray the apartment ? Or will the medicine kill all fleas in the apartment, as well |
Answer: | VACUUM EVERY DAY. Or at least every other day. You will NEVER get rid of all the fleas if you don't treat the environment as well as the animal(s). In addition to the Advantage II, I used Knockout spray and also shampooed my cat. She has now had two doses of the Advantage and I have been spraying and vacuuming every other day and I finally feel like I have the upper hand! Even when you think they are gone, keep treating your cat and house. All it takes is one flea to start an infestation. |
Question: | Why is the item called "Bayer K9 Advantix II Flea and Tick Control Treatment for Cats"? The Bayer K9 is, of course, for dogs |
Answer: | Please be sure to use ONLY Feline Advantage on cats and use ONLY the dog Advantage on dogs! The use of canine Advantage on cats WILL kill them giving them severe neurological damage! I wish that Advantage would make the packaging TOTALLY different for cats and dogs, it would help. Especially with people who may not see the difference at first glance. My elderly mom accidentally applied the large dog Advantage to her cat and it had to be put down. Mom has felt horrible about it. Awful experience. Also about dosing, I have a 19 year old cat and I have used feline Advantage on him every summer for about 3 months for well over 17 years. It works wonderfully for him. I have always used the large cat product but since he has lost some weight this year I called Bayer and asked if I should use a smaller dose. The person at Bayer explained that Advantage works on body AREA as well as weight. So even though my cat has lost some weight (he's 9 pounds) his body AREA is still the same (loose skin) and so I have been applying the large cat dose and it has worked well for him this summer with no ill effects. I cannot speak to the authenticity of this Amazon product as I purchase my Advantage from the local pet store. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it really work for cats |
Answer: | We've used it all summer on two indoor/outdoor cats -- works great, and our cats didn't have the allergic reaction that they've had on some other brands (Frontline, etc.). I would recommend it. |
Question: | Will this treat a 14 pound cat |
Answer: | I have a cat that is 13 pounds but he does not go out, our other four do. He is on an enclosed patio for outside time. I do treat him for safety as it would be possible for fleas, ticks and lice to get into the patio area. |
Question: | how does this compare to advantage in terms of success in ridding of fleas and/or mites |
Answer: | This was the only flea product that’s ever worked for me. I always found Advantage to be overpriced and ineffective. |
Question: | How long does it take to start working |
Answer: | I applied it on my barn cats in the evening when I fed them, the next morning when I fed them not one of the 7 cats was scratching and I didn't see any fleas on any of the cats. I think it started working as soon as you apply it to the cats. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product also kill ear mites and mosquitoes as Revolution does? Thank you |
Answer: | This doesn't even kill fleas. |
Question: | I accidentally bought the the 5-9 lb. size for my cat that weighs 13 pounds. Should I use 2 tubes instead of one |
Answer: | No, just use one. You may have to re-apply after 2-3 weeks but that is perfectly safe according to my vet. |
Question: | Expiration dates |
Answer: | No exp date since there is no heartworm prevention in this there is no need for an exp date and as long as you follow the recommendations for temperatures to store it in it should be good and effective indefinitely |
Question: | hi, is anyone that uses this actually seeing the dead fleas on their floors? like advantage 2? thanks need 2 no |
Answer: | Its kept my dog flea free. Best yet, she's deathly allergic to Fipronil flea meds suddenly as a senior. Advantage and this generic have produced zero side effects in her, although I was terrified to use anything after a terrible reaction to her usual flea products last summer. With a new puppy, a 1 year old, and 2 cats, skipping flea prevention wasn't an option. So far, this has been wonderful. By the way, if your pets show any signs of an immediate reaction to any flea products, immediately bathe them in blue Dawn dishwashing liquid. I'd changed vets and the new vet failed to tell me all the regular shampoos weren't helping because flea meds are oil based. Only Dawn will get it off, hopefully before it's been absorbed in the bloodstream. Dawn and 2 weeks of subQ fluids even 4 days later saved my dog's life. |

FRONTLINE Plus Flea and Tick Treatment for Cats
Made with two tough ingredients, FRONTLINE Plus helps you rid your pet of fleas and ticks, and prevent further infestations.
The first, fipronil, attacks adult fleas and ticks. The second, (S)-methoprene, attacks flea eggs and larvae. They work together to exterminate all month long.
FRONTLINE Plus also breaks the flea life cycle by destroying the next generation of flea eggs and larvae—giving you the power to help prevent a flea infestation on your pet.
Because it stores in the sebaceous glands in the skin, it constantly replenishes the protection for 30 days, working even if your pet gets wet.
Break the Flea Life Cycle
Flea infestations start with just two fleas laying hundreds of flea eggs within a matter of days. FRONTLINE Plus prevents an infestation by not only exterminating adult fleas—which comprise only 5% of the total flea population—but also by destroying flea eggs and larvae too.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a smell - chopped it up put in wet food cat would not touch it |
Answer: | No it does not smell. Do not chop it up . Take a little bit of the cat food and roll the pill in it. Then place the pill covered in cat food on top of the rest of the cat food. Make sure your cat is hungry, like the first thing in the morning. |
Question: | Can this be given in addition to a topical flea solution |
Answer: | A vet tech told me it is ok , but I play it safe and apply the topical (Advantage) 24 hours after the Capstar. |
Question: | Is this the medicine that makes the cat act nervous like something is biting it after about 20 minutes giving the pill |
Answer: | Capstar affect the nervous system of the fleas and they get spastic. The fleas get into a frenzy and squirm around on the cat. All that movement on the cats skin drive them a little crazy for 30-60 minutes. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and blue label Capstar |
Answer: | I would call the company, and see if they say, "We can get double our money for anyone with a small dog AND a cat." Many do not like cats as well as dogs and if the designers of this drug are members of those who like one species of pets, they may not care if your cat gets poisoned. and there are many foods that cats or dogs find poisonous, and for many who have indoor cats, the pills may expire before needing to use more. |

Remove the cap and make sure there is an opening at the tip of the tube. 3. Part the hair on your cat’s neck at the base of the head until skin is visible. 4. Place the tip of the tube directly above the skin and squeeze 2-4 times to dispense the contents directly on the skin.
OTHER APPLICATION TIPS: Apply a single dose to each individual cat. Do not split a single tube between multiple cats. For best results, apply at the base of the head, not between shoulder blades. Avoid getting Cheristin in your pet’s eyes or mouth. Do not allow your cat to ingest Cheristin.
