10 best solar pool heaters
Solar pool heaters are energy-efficient devices used to heat swimming pools using the power of the sun. These systems utilize solar collectors or panels to capture sunlight and convert it into heat energy, which is then transferred to the pool water. Here's what you need to know about solar pool heaters:
Solar Collectors: Solar pool heating systems consist of solar collectors or panels, typically mounted on rooftops or nearby structures. These collectors are made of materials like black plastic or rubber tubing, and they work by absorbing sunlight and converting it into heat.
Circulation System: A pump circulates pool water through the solar collectors. As the water flows through the collectors, it is heated by the absorbed solar energy.
Control System: Many solar pool heaters have a control system that allows you to set the desired pool water temperature and regulate the flow of water through the solar collectors. This ensures that your pool stays at a comfortable temperature.
Efficiency: The efficiency of a solar pool heater depends on various factors, including the size of the collector, the amount of sunlight available, and the system's design. In general, solar pool heaters are most effective in regions with abundant sunlight.
Environmentally Friendly: Solar pool heaters are environmentally friendly because they rely on renewable energy from the sun, reducing the need for electricity or gas to heat the pool. This can significantly reduce your carbon footprint.
Cost Savings: While the initial cost of installing a solar pool heater can be relatively high, it can lead to significant long-term cost savings on energy bills compared to traditional pool heating methods.
Extended Swimming Season: Solar pool heaters can extend the swimming season, allowing you to enjoy your pool earlier in the spring and later into the fall, depending on your location.
Maintenance: Solar pool heating systems are generally low-maintenance. Routine checks for leaks, proper water flow, and the condition of the collectors are typically all that's needed.
Sizing: The size of the solar collector or panel system should be chosen based on the size of your pool and the local climate. A professional installer can help determine the right size for your specific needs.
Backup Heating: In some cases, solar pool heaters may be used in conjunction with a backup heating system, such as a gas or electric heater, for periods when there isn't enough sunlight to meet the desired pool temperature.
Local Regulations: Check with local authorities or building codes to ensure compliance with any regulations regarding the installation of solar pool heaters.
Solar pool heaters are an excellent choice for pool owners who want an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to heat their pools. They can provide comfortable swimming temperatures and are especially beneficial in sunny climates. When considering a solar pool heater, it's essential to assess your pool's size, your climate, and your budget to determine the right system for you. Professional installation is often recommended to ensure proper performance and safety.

User questions & answers
Question: | What size are the hose connections |
Answer: | It can hook up to 1.25 intex or 1.5 hose. You need gaskets though. |
Question: | How would this work for heating my 40 gal hot water heater |
Answer: | I'm presently heating 60 gallons. Keep in mind it only heats as long as is on the unit. You will need a pump to circulate the water and dual shut off valves to isolate the water while it is heating. I heat a jacuzzi with mine and in the peak of summer I got over 120° incoming water. Good luck. |
Question: | Can you connect several of them together easily |
Answer: | Yes, it has a connection hose and clamps with each one to tie one, two or more together. Hint: make sure you silicone the caps and threaded fittings. I did even with the Teflon Tape to insure no leaks. Work great. |
Question: | Doe it work with a sand filter |
Answer: | Yes it works with a sand filter. It also works with salt water systems. I installed mine downstream from the filter on the inlet line to the pool and before the chlorine generator. I would not install it upstream from the pump and filter because you don't want any debris that gets past the skimmer to get into the heater to potentially cause blockages. It doesn't have to be before the chlorine generator either, that's just how mine worked out. |
Question: | What is included |
Answer: | Included are mounts for concrete (looks difficult) and mount for ladder, that was a snap. Almost returned, test button not too loud, but my wife set it off packaging it, service level is adequate for alarm. Not insane, but you can hear it inside. |
Question: | do you think it is sensitive enough for a 15 pound dog? Also, do you think it would work with the pool thermal blanket on |
Answer: | As to the 15 pound dog, yes if properly set and tested. The sensitivity changes according to how high or low from the water surface the sensor is. As to a thermal blanket, I have no idea. |
Question: | Can this be used in an above ground pool |
Answer: | Don't see why not, it attached to our ladder to our inground pool but should work for you as long as you have something similar to attach it to. |
Question: | does this unit require additional hardware etc for this unit to work or is it all included? also what type of electricity is required to the unit |
Answer: | It's battery powered and it comes with all hardware. It screws to the pool deck, in my case I had to have a masonry drill bit |
Question: | Can this detect motion from a dog that weighs 10 pounds |
Answer: | Depends on how close to the alarm set dog falls in, if it doesn’t cause a wave enough to move the floating cone then it won’t sound the alarm |
Question: | How come this doesn’t work in polls below the ground |
Answer: | It just doesn’t work. Don’t buy us unless you have an Indoor pool because a slight breeze will sound the alarm |
Question: | Not to many details provided on amazon...is this alarm simple to turn off when maintaining/ cleaning pool? Also, any indication when battery is dead |
Answer: | No |
Question: | is there an alarm that hooks to ladder |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Does this work with an above-ground pool liner? Would the alarm go off at any movement of the liner |
Answer: | Ours is in an above-ground pool. You have to place it so it’s not in line with the filter output. It works well. |
Question: | Can this be used in in ground pools |
Answer: | No this is designed for above ground pools only. Try the Pooleye PE23 |
Question: | Will this alert you to a 6 pound dog falling in |
Answer: | Sadly I doubt it would- I believe it had to be like 19-25 pounds to sound the alarm. Can you install a gate? This is scary for you… I wish Good luck with your dog!! |
Question: | How does it connect to the alarm in the house |
Answer: | It connects through wifi to another transmitter you charge in house. It's really loud regardless. You won't miss the alarm. |
Question: | does it have to be tethered ,or can it float free |
Answer: | it comes with a long tether that can be easily shortened without cutting it, but you could let it float around without it. If it is free floating be sure it is alarming properly. Its alarm sensitivity is also very adjustable. Note: rain will also likely set it off. |
Question: | Will it work if a small, 8-pound dog falls in |
Answer: | I believe it will work. Our cats, 10# and 11# both fell in and it went off. Also, my husband forgot it was in and just dangled his feet and it went off. We have been really pleased with it. |
Question: | What is included |
Answer: | Included are mounts for concrete (looks difficult) and mount for ladder, that was a snap. Almost returned, test button not too loud, but my wife set it off packaging it, service level is adequate for alarm. Not insane, but you can hear it inside. |

Sensitivity Adustment
Turning the black flotation base clockwise or counterclockwise raises or lowers the sensing ring with respect to the water. stops. Do not force it. This is the most sensitive position and the position that was used to pass ASTM testing. Moving the float from this position will no longer meet ASTM requirements The closer the sensing ring is to the water, the more sensitive the alarm. Turn the black flotation base gently clockwise until it.
Sensitivity Marks
The “Sensitivity Marks” can be used as a general indicator for the sensitivity position. Should the sensitivity need to be adjusted start making adjustments by turning the float only a ¼ turn at a time. Test the alarm after each adjustment. We do not recommend turning the float out more than three full turns.
Alarm Placement for pools 20x40 ft or smaller
One pool alarm can be used for all pool types. This includes aboveground, in-ground, inflatable and soft side pools.
Alarm Placement for pools larger then 20x40 ft
It is recommended that more than one alarm should be used in pools larger than 20x40 ft.
RECEIVER
Your receiver works with the pool alarm allowing you to monitor your pool from within your house. When the floating alarm is activated it sends a signal to activate the receiver.
Transmission Modes
The receiver has two modes of operation: Serial Number mode (SN mode) and ID mode. When the receiver is in SN mode it will accept the transmission of any Pool Patrol transmitter (this is the default setting). The serial number is common to all transmitters. When the receiver is in ID mode it will accept the serial number plus the ID number of the transmission. The ID number is unique to each transmitter.
RECEIVER PLACEMENT
It is best to place the receiver next to a window or wood door adjacent to the pool with-in 200 feet from the transmitter. Do not place the receiver near steel walls, cabinets, on or alongside an electrical appliance, such as a computer, or on a metal surface as this may affect signal reception. The pool alarm will not transmit its signal through the ground.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the maximum amount of gallons that this pool heater will warm up? Also, by how many degrees |
Answer: | 1 box of the S421P panels will heat up to 31ft round aboveground pool or 18'x36' oval pool. It can heat it up to as much as 15 degrees. SPQ Brands |
Question: | can this be used to heat a [4 person] hot tub to a comfortably HOT temperature |
Answer: | No. It only increases the temperature 6-10 degrees. If the water is hot then it may retain the heat & increase a little but would not be good as a main source of heat. |
Question: | Did you use one or two panels |
Answer: | We used 2 panels |
Question: | what all is included in the purchase? hoses? clamps |
Answer: | I purchased the kit with 2 solar panels. It comes with pvc caps for one end of the panels. A rubber hose to connect the two panels together on the other end, as well as hose clamps. 2 pvc fittings for input and output flow to the panels. These are made to connect the filter hose to the panels. (although we bought new fittings to use all pvc pipe) It doesn't have any mounting hardware or rack to mount the panels to. So don't expect to have everything you will need. The picture on this ad shows more than what you will get. But performance of this heater has been very satisfying |

Extend your swimming season using free heat from the sun with the SunHeater S421 solar heating system for above ground pools!
Product description
Solar Sun Rings are passive solar swimming pool heating devices, constructed from two layers of U.V. resistant vinyl. The upper clear layer directs the suns rays onto the bottom blue layer which absorbs about 50% of the sunlight, converting it to heat. The remaining sunlight filters through the ring into your pool water. The majority of heat loss from a pool comes from the water surface at night. Solar Sun Rings do not cover the entire surface of your pool; therefore it allows heat to escape. To help keep the warm water in your pool at night we recommend you use additional insulation such as solar fish or a solar blanket. Do not over inflate. Do not use as a flotation device. Note: Solar Sun Rings may vary in color and design from one manufacturing lot to the next. If you are purchasing additional rings to add to your existing rings they will be functionally the same, but may appear visually different. Coverage: Solar Sun Rings are warranted to be free of manufacturing defects for two years. Warranty is limited to materials and workmanship.

Answer: | None. Unless you pay for postage and restocking and that all most covers your costs so there is no warranty |
Question: | How do we get these to lay flat? We tried deflating them a little but the ends are still bending |
Answer: | I found even after deflating they still bend. Not Until they are in the sun for a bit will they level out. |
Question: | What is the size of the ring |
Answer: | they are the size as to their description Love them uase them all the time |
Question: | I can not seem to see the size |
Answer: | Without going out to my storage unit to invlate and measure them, I think they are about 5 or 5.6" in diameter. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Can this vacuum head be used for vinyl liner pools |
Answer: | I have owned both vinyl liner and concrete pools. This head would be better for concrete. For vinyl liner pools, I prefer a vacuum head that has bristles on it. This head may work for vinyl, but it was designed for concrete/guinite. |
Question: | Is this for a vinyl liner (above ground) or gunite |
Answer: | It works great for gunite. Just keep in mind that it is very wide so you'll get done a lot quicker. |
Question: | Is delivery fast |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Bought aquaflex 1.5 inch hose with rotating cuffs to go with this vacuum, but it keeps coming off vacuum despite tryin evrything. Am I missin smethng |
Answer: | We do not have that problem with our 1.5" rotating cuff. I can only assume the cuff is too large and needs to be replaced. This is the hose we purchased and we haven't had any issues, owned over a year. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005SS9EB0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |

Question: | Can you connect to and above ground intel pool with a sand filter |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Can these be installed on a garage roof, above the water level |
Answer: | The hoses that come with it aren't long enough, and your filter pump probably isn't strong enough to pump the water up to roof level. IIRC, it does recommend not putting it higher than the water level. |
Question: | Will this work with a Coleman above ground pool or do I need to get adapters to make I think work |
Answer: | I went to 2 pool stores and 2 home improvement stores and none of the could sell me anything that would fit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 10,000 above ground pool would I need more than one of these |
Answer: | I used it on a 10 foot diameter, 30 inch deep Intex above ground pool, one of those with the blow-up ring around the top. It would heat it up a little on a warm sunny day. My pool is probably 1,000 gallons. So yes you would need more than one. If you can control the flow of water through the panel with a valve then you could regulate it to get maximum heat by slowing down the flow. |
Question: | Is having it installed for an extra fee an option? I'm a senior citizen, and not confident to hook this up by myself |
Answer: | As long as you can bend over for a short time, you can handle it! I'm 54 (almost senior), but have a spine injury with a great deal of nerve damage. I was able to install alone. Just make sure you have the suggested lube to get the tubing into the unit, or you won't be able to get it in. That makes it a breeze! Good luck! |
Question: | Will this work on my dough boy pool |
Answer: | It should. Depends on how much sun etc your yard gets. We have an above ground pool (18 ft around) and normally temps are in the high 60s ( like 68-70) when we open the pool and we freeze when we get in or can't swim at all till mid June. We installed one of these and it's been a big help with raising temps. our yard is semi sunny and our temps have jumped up to 83 in our pool. |
Question: | I have 2 conected ro a 1.5hp motor and am not getting much if any heat thru the 2 heaters at all i have it setup just as the directions show |
Answer: | How long do you run them? We are in Wyoming. Warm days, cool nights. We run ours from 9 am until about 5 pm. The heater is in the sun the entire time. Our pool, 18 foot round, 4 foot deep, gets to 100 in July. Now with cooler nights and daytime temps, it is at about 90. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do i properly adjust valves to get best operation of these panels |
Answer: | I just connected system to discharge line (2") to pool as source and then returned to same discharge line as return from sun exposure. Also included a 1/2" pipe at top of return end of system with a valve on it to allow for release of air which in fact takes time to push through. |
Question: | If a leak forms can it be patched?? If so what is needed |
Answer: | Depends on where the leak is. If it is in a tube yes. The mfg has a kit I believe. |
Question: | Is this for in-ground or above-ground pools? The item title says in-ground but the box in the photo says above-ground. (My pool is above-ground |
Answer: | I use it for an in ground pool and works perfect. It will also work for an above ground pool if you have the proper piping. All it does is, that the same pool pump you have runs the water through the panels before going back into the pool |
Question: | I have a 12.5' x 22' inground pool and i live in florida. any idea of how many boxes i should order? thanks |
Answer: | I would not go with less than 4 panels. You should base the number of panels on the sf of your pools surface and the amount of sun the panels will receive. I recall reading somewhere that the surface of the panels should be no less than 60% of your pool surface if you want to gain any advantage by using solar. On a pool your size, with the panels in the sun, in Florida, four panels would give you a long swimming season. While I'm too cheap to use an automatic temperature valve for the panels, you may want to consider it. I believe building code requires some sort of safety device that will prevent scalding. I learned the hard way that if you turn the panels on late in the day that water coming out of your supply line will be hotter than McDonalds coffee. I live in SW Florida. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these really warm the water |
Answer: | It definitely works. Make sure it is in the sunlight for a minimum of 4 hours (depending on your preference in water temp). I also use a solar blanket. It is pretty awesome and I am purchasing another for my approx 5000 gallon pool (12X24X48) just because I like my water a bit warmer than others, after being spoiled while on vacation last year by a heated pool in 100 degree weather - never thought I would want that warm of water during hot weather but found I do, and I really want to extend my season. I turn my pump on around 11 and leave it on until 4 with direct sunlight at those times. |
Question: | we have a 14.000 gallon above ground pool. live in Riverside CA Inland Empire. I assume high heat purchasing one set of 2X20 h20 temp comfortable |
Answer: | I use two panels an find the pool quite comfortable. I live in a hot area in NorCal. I find that using a solar blanket helps quite a bit not only in preserving the heat at night but greatly increasing the heat buildup during the day. I highly recommend using both the blanket and the panel. |
Question: | I could lean this up against a fence in the sun but it's about 80' away. Can I use garden hoses to send water that far and back |
Answer: | it is 80' in total or 160' round trip? what brand and model of pool pump to you have? this is not intended to be used with a garden hose. |
Question: | How many hours a day do you have to run it to heat up the pool at least 10 degrees? I have an indoor, in-ground pool |
Answer: | Wow, that's an unanswerable question, unless you can run a computer model with all the input variables specific to your installation. The variables include your latitude, hours per day of clear sunshine, running hours, heat loss rate from your pool, size and efficiency of your solar collectors, etc...The bottom line is that you run the collectors as much as possible (dictated by your solar controller), and accept whatever it supplies. If you need a specific water temperature, you use a backup heater (natural gas or heat pump - not propane or electric resistance!). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use a submersible pump that generate 10 psi at the solar panel's inlet? 1.5 HP sounds like an overkill and involves high energy to run |
Answer: | Given that our pump shows a bit more than 10 psi (four panels, connected in paralell) I can't see why 10 at the inlet won't work. I found these panels worked more efficiently (much higher flow) plumbing two intakes at one end, and one return at the other. There is more pipe involved, but i was able to use my existing Intex pool pump with about 18ft of head on the system. |
Question: | I have a 14' x 40' inground pool; would everyone recommend that I buy two of these to go along the entire length of the pool, would one be okay |
Answer: | Unless your pool is only 2 feet deep, you definitely need at least 2 panels. I have a 14' x 30' pool and 2 is the correct number for sufficient heating in TX. Rule of thumb, 1 panel for every 5000 gallons of pool. Also, you don't need to run them the length of the pool end to end. I have mine side by side up on top of the roof of my pergola. That way they don't take up as much room. I've also installed them side by side up on the house roof. |
Question: | Is this one 4x20 piece or two seperate 2x10 pieces |
Answer: | A 4x20 package is two 2x20 panels with a short section of hose to connect them together. |
Question: | Are you able to curve it around a pool or must it be straight out |
Answer: | The panels actually come rolled up so curving them should not be a problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Shipping dimensions 20x40 12 mil and weight |
Answer: | I think he/she is asking what are the dimensions and weight of the box that the cover is shipped in. I would also like to know the answer. |
Question: | What is this material made of? Is it safe to use in a pond |
Answer: | It will be safe for at least a year. I have had the cover for exactly 13 months and the cover is starting to fall apart and is leaving small blue bubble debris in my pool. If you have fish in the pond, I would be concerned that the debris could harm the fish if they tried to eat it. |
Question: | Is there a warranty on this solar cover |
Answer: | They claim there is but when we had an issue with all of the bubbles falling off and clogging our filter leading a brand new pump to burn out they claimed the bubbles separating from the cover isn’t under warranty! We had the cover 10 months and our pool pump was just about a year old...we had put in a new pool. DO NOT BUY THIS COVER |
Question: | Does any color work better than the other |
Answer: | Hands down clear is the better cover for solar gain. Yhe Department of Energy say the following. "Outdoor pools gain heat from the sun, absorbing 75%–85% of the solar energy striking the pool surface. This is an important contribution to the pool's heating needs. A pool cover will decrease the solar gain contribution to some extent, depending on what type you use. A transparent bubble cover may reduce pool solar energy absorption by 5%–15%. A completely opaque cover will reduce it by 20%–40%. You need to consider this when selecting a pool cover." |
