14 best canned hominy

Canned hominy is a pantry staple that is popular in various cuisines, particularly in Mexican and Southern American cooking. It is made from dried maize (corn) kernels that have undergone a process called nixtamalization. Here's what you need to know about canned hominy:

  1. Nixtamalization: This is the traditional process of soaking dried maize kernels in an alkaline solution, often using slaked lime or wood ash. This process helps soften the maize, remove the outer hull, and make it more nutritious and easier to digest.

  2. Varieties: Canned hominy typically comes in two main varieties - white and yellow. White hominy is made from white corn, while yellow hominy is made from yellow corn. The choice between the two is mostly a matter of personal preference and the specific recipe you're using.

  3. Texture: Canned hominy has a unique texture compared to regular corn. The nixtamalization process gives it a chewy and slightly spongy texture. It's often described as being "meatier" than regular corn.

  4. Uses: Canned hominy is a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. It's a key ingredient in dishes like pozole, a Mexican soup made with hominy and meat (usually pork or chicken). Hominy can also be used in stews, casseroles, salads, and as a side dish.

  5. Nutrition: Hominy is a good source of carbohydrates and fiber. It's also naturally gluten-free, making it suitable for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease. However, it's worth noting that canned hominy can contain added salt, so it's a good idea to rinse it before use if you're watching your sodium intake.

  6. Availability: Canned hominy is widely available in most grocery stores, often found in the canned vegetable aisle or the international foods section.

  7. Storage: Like most canned goods, canned hominy has a long shelf life. It should be stored in a cool, dry place and can be kept for an extended period without spoiling.

In summary, canned hominy is a versatile pantry staple made from maize that has undergone nixtamalization. It has a unique texture and is used in various dishes, particularly in Mexican and Southern American cuisine. It's a convenient ingredient to have on hand for adding flavor and texture to your meals.

User questions & answers

Question: How many cans do you get
Answer: IT'S A FULL CAN
Question: If not used all, can you freez the rest
Answer: We've used a variety of different sized eggs (large, extra-large, jumbo) and these work fine for all of them.
Question: What Are The Health Benefits
Answer: I believe it is, I have washed mine in the dishwasher and have had no adverse results.
Question: Is it golden or white hominy
Answer: Suit your self. I have two sets of egg toppers. One was made in Germany and cost around $15 several years ago. It has a T-handle rather than a ball as is on the China-made one. The China-made egg topper came as a set with four egg cups and four egg spoons, and cost $15 last year. They both work identically well. The egg topper inverted cup has a slight and sharp rim that is just deep enough to break the eggshell in a circle when you pull the handle or the ball to its full stretch and then release it. You wold think it would crack the egg all to hellangone, but it doesn't. Works best on large and extra large eggs, jumbos are too big. Don't be too harsh on the Chinese. Remember that they experienced the total disruption and downfall of what had been one of the richest nations on earth, first under colonial misrule and the Opium wars, then under Japanese domination, then under Mao who at least got rid of the flies at a cost of about 40 million chinese. Now, with American aid, they are coming back in a big way. Be glad - the Chinese have always been big contributors to world arts and sciences, industry and medicine. Wouldn't you rather send your lousy 15 bucks to China than to Africa where it will just disappear into a bureaucrat's pocket?

User questions & answers

Question: Can you grind this corn to make hominy grits
Answer: Can't get a confident answer from Bush, but I think it uses genetically modified seed because I am reacting to it each time I take a bite.
Question: How is this grown
Answer: According to the label, there are 3.5 servings per can and 450mg of Sodium per serving.
Question: I have a tortilla recipe that calls for dried corn. Will this product suffice
Answer: I suspect that it is NOT, as I don't see anything on the label to indicate the presence of lime as an ingredient. I would suggest three things: (1) ask the manufacturer; (2) select a brand that clearly states that it is nixtamalized, or that lime is present; or (3) consider whether it matters, if you don't eat hominy on a regular basis.
Question: Does it have lye or sodium metabisulfite
Answer: The 16 oz can has 550 mg of sodium.
