10 best pool test strips
Pool test strips are essential tools for maintaining the water quality in swimming pools and hot tubs. These strips are designed to provide quick and easy testing of various chemical parameters in the water, helping pool and spa owners ensure that the water remains safe, clean, and balanced. Here's what you need to know about pool test strips:
Function: Pool test strips are used to measure several key water parameters, including:
- Chlorine: Determines the chlorine level, which is critical for sanitizing the water and preventing the growth of harmful bacteria.
- pH Level: Measures the acidity or alkalinity of the water.Proper pH balance is essential for swimmer comfort and preventing equipment corrosion.
- Total Alkalinity (TA): Indicates the water's ability to resist changes in pH levels, helping to maintain pH stability.
- Cyanuric Acid (CYA): Measures the level of stabilizer (usually cyanuric acid) in the water, which helps protect chlorine from sunlight degradation.
- Total Hardness: Measures the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. Proper hardness levels prevent scaling and corrosion.
Ease of Use: Pool test strips are user-friendly and require minimal expertise. Simply dip the strip into the water, and after a brief moment, compare the color changes on the strip to the provided color chart to read the test results.
Types of Test Strips: There are different types of pool test strips available, including:
- Single-Parameter Test Strips: These strips measure one specific parameter, such as chlorine or pH.
- Multi-Parameter Test Strips: These strips measure multiple parameters at once, providing a comprehensive overview of water quality.
- Digital Testers: Some advanced options include digital testers that provide numerical readouts for precise measurements.
Storage: To ensure the accuracy of test results, it's important to store pool test strips in a cool, dry place and keep them sealed in their original packaging. Exposure to moisture or heat can affect the accuracy of the strips.
Frequency of Testing: Regular testing of pool or spa water is essential, especially during the swimming season. It's recommended to test the water at least once a week and after heavy pool usage or significant weather events.
Adjusting Chemicals: Based on the test results, you may need to adjust the pool's chemical balance. For example, if the pH is too high or low, you'll need to add pH increaser or pH reducer, respectively. Similarly, chlorine or other sanitizers may need adjustment based on the test results.
Safety: When handling pool chemicals, including those used to adjust water balance, always follow safety guidelines provided on the product labels. Use personal protective equipment as needed.
Maintaining Records: Keeping a record of your pool or spa test results over time can help you identify trends and address issues before they become severe.
In summary, pool test strips are invaluable tools for pool and hot tub owners to ensure that their water remains safe and comfortable for swimming. Regular testing and appropriate chemical adjustments based on test results are essential for maintaining water quality and preserving the longevity of pool equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to detect chloride or salt content in a salt water pool |
Answer: | No this will only detect the levels for a chlorine/ bromine pool water pool. |
Question: | I have two bottles of your tests strips. One bottle is pool and spa and the other one is spa and hot tub. I’m getting two different readings |
Answer: | Hi there, the spa and hot tub are calibrated a little differently to work better in warmer water. If you would like to send me a picture of your tested strip I would be happy to see if maybe one of the sets were defective? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Best, Nathan, JNW Support. |
Question: | Can I use these to test the chlorine in my house water |
Answer: | I don’t think these test strips are sensitive enough to detect the amount of chlorine typically in tap water. Unless your tap water has really high chlorine content. These strips won’t detect anything under 1ppm. |
Question: | Alkanity range is incorrect. Should be 80-120 no |
Answer: | 80-120 is the best range and yes the range shown on the product label is wrong. Most people use these for hot tubs, if you use bromine than even 80 is too low bromine spas should be in the 100-120 range |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does my chlorine/bromine square (1st square) turn blue? That's not on the chart |
Answer: | Re FCL/Br pad turning blue means you could have a very high level of Chlorine in the water. Usually as it goes up the scale goes from a white color at 0 ppm, to pink to purple them off the scale 10 ppm+ could be a purplish blue color. If you have recently chlorine shocked the water this might be why. As the chlorine/Brominie dissipates this level should return to normal. |
Question: | Will these give proper reading for alkaline ph of drinking water from a alkaline water machine |
Answer: | Yes, these strips can be used to test any water. The ideal ranges displayed on our product's results key are intended for swimming pool water, but the readings also provide results as ppm or standard pH scale, so you can still compare the results to your desired levels. |
Question: | will this work on salt water pool |
Answer: | This will work but it's my understanding that salt water pools have a much lower chlorine level than chlorinated pools. The 'normal' level indicator shown on the bottle may be incorrect for a salt pool. More information here:http://www.saltwaterpoolandspa.com/salt-water-pool-maintenance.html |
Question: | does the package state what chemicals to add |
Answer: | There are several factors to consider when adding products to affect your pool's chemistry. Weather conditions, frequency of use, water features, time of day, and pool surface material all play a role in determining what your ideal chemical levels should be, and the amounts needed to affect a proper change. These test strips are intended as a simple diagnostic to determine your pool's current chemical levels. Please consult a pool calculator, or contact your local pool professional for advice on changing the chemical levels of your pool water. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why the readings are different of Cyanuric Acid |
Answer: | Please Note : For best results, pH must be between 7.0~8.4. |
Question: | This says it does five tests. I only count four. What’s the fifth |
Answer: | Although there are 4pads, one of these tests is for both Free Chlorine and Bromine. That’s why it is called 5-way test. |
Question: | Why the test pads bleed on to each other |
Answer: | Dip into the water and remove it ,Do Not shake excess water off ,hold the strip horizontally for 30 seconds ,then compare with the color chart and read the results immediately. |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | The shelf life of the test strips is 2 years from the manufacture date. The expiry date are printed on the bottom of the box. |
Question: | Can I use these to see if my water filter is filtering chlorine (drinking water |
Answer: | These test strips are for chlorinated pools. Drinking water has a much lower chlorine level, even before filtering. I'd check something for use in an aquarium where the desired level of chlorine is zero |
Question: | Can it be used for salt water pool |
Answer: | If it tests for what you want, then yes. It is necessary to check free chlorine in saltwater chlorinator pools to make sure the saltwater system is doing its job. So these strips will work for that (as well as ph, etc.). But you probably also want to test for salt level which these strips will not do. |
Question: | Would this product be effective testing bleach in water? I’m going to a country where water isn’t potable and will add bleach to it in order cook |
Answer: | Yes it does! It will detect sodium hypochlorite just like it would chlorine! I don't know what these other people are thinking. Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in Bleach so, yes, it would test for it just fine. I use bleach in my pool. |
Question: | What is the difference between "free chlorine" and "chlorine |
Answer: | According to Aqua Chek's website, A:Free chlorine refers to both hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and the hypochlorite (OCl-) ion or bleach, and is commonly added to water systems for disinfection. When ammonia or organic nitrogen is also present, chloramines known as monochloramine, dichloramine, and trichloramine will quickly form. Chloramines are also known as combined chlorine.Total chlorine is the sum of free chlorine and combined chlorine. The level of total chlorine will always be higher than or equal to the level of free chlorine.Free chlorine is typically measured in drinking water disinfection systems using chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite to find whether the water system contains enough disinfectant. Typical levels of free chlorine in drinking water are 0.2 - 2.0 mg/L Cl2, though levels can be as high as 5.0 mg/L.Total chlorine is typically measured to determine the total chlorine content of treated waste water, often for discharge purposes. If you are required to measure and report chlorine levels to a regulatory agency, we advise that you check with your regulator to find whether you are required to measure free chlorine or total chlorine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This says it does seven tests. I only count six. What's the seventh |
Answer: | Yes, that's normal. Although there are 6 pads, one of them tests for both Total Bromine and Total Chlorine. That's why it is called 7-way test. |
Question: | I have an aquarium and I need to take away all the chlorine. Can I use these strips for my aquarium |
Answer: | These test strips are designed for testing pool or spa water only. |
Question: | How can I keep my pool strips accurate |
Answer: | There are several things you can do to make sure testing strips will stay accurate. For example: 1. Keep the inside of the bottle dry - Strip pads will react if they get wet, so shake out a strip and pick it up with dry fingers. Make sure to keep wet fingers out of the bottle! 2. Tightly seal cap after removing a strip - To keep moisture out of the bottle, close the cap quickly and tightly after removing a strip. 3. Read results in natural daylight whenever possible - Artificial light can make color matching difficult when indoors. 4. Store your testing strips in a cool, dry place - Indoor is best because extreme heat and moisture can reduce the shelf-life of the strips. Once opened, use within 6 months. These may sound simple, but you’d be surprised at how big a difference following these simple steps can make." |
Question: | Are pool & spa strips accurate |
Answer: | Mostly, the CYA reading is inaccurate. |
