4 best pool chemical testings
Pool chemical testing is a crucial aspect of pool maintenance to ensure the safety and clarity of the water. It involves the use of various products and tools to measure and adjust the chemical balance of the water. Here's what you need to know about pool chemical testing and related products:
Test Strips: Test strips are one of the most common tools for pool chemical testing. They are small strips of paper or plastic coated with chemical reagents. To use them, you dip the strip into the pool water and then compare the colors that appear on the strip to a color chart provided with the test kit. The chart helps you determine the levels of key chemicals in the water, such as pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and bromine.
Liquid Test Kits: Liquid test kits consist of reagents in liquid form and typically come with test tubes or vials. You add a specified number of drops of the reagent to a water sample and observe the color change. Liquid test kits are often considered more accurate than test strips and are useful for precise measurements of chemical levels.
Chemicals for Water Testing: To maintain proper water chemistry, you may need to add various chemicals to your pool, including:
Chlorine: Chlorine is the most common sanitizer used in pools to kill bacteria and control algae growth. It's available in different forms, such as tablets, granules, or liquid.
pH Adjusters: These chemicals help maintain the pH level of the water within the recommended range (usually between 7.2 and 7.8). pH adjusters can raise (alkalinity increasers) or lower (pH decreasers) the pH as needed.
Alkalinity Increasers: These chemicals raise the total alkalinity of the pool water, which helps stabilize the pH.
Calcium Hardness Adjusters: They are used to control the level of calcium hardness in the water, preventing issues like scaling or water becoming too soft.
Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): This chemical helps protect chlorine from degradation due to UV rays from the sun.
Cleaning Tools and Chemicals: Keeping your pool clean is essential for water quality. Pool cleaning tools include pool brushes, skimmers, vacuum cleaners, and robotic pool cleaners. Chemicals like algaecides and clarifiers can also help maintain water clarity.
Pools and Hot Tubs Supplies: This category encompasses a wide range of products, including pool covers, pumps, filters, heaters, and more. These items are crucial for the overall maintenance and functionality of your pool or hot tub.
Patio, Lawn, and Garden Products: These products may include outdoor furniture, decor, and landscaping tools that help enhance the overall ambiance and aesthetics of your pool area.
Proper pool chemical testing and maintenance are vital to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience. Regular testing and adjustment of water chemistry help prevent problems like algae growth, cloudy water, and irritation to swimmers' eyes and skin. It's essential to follow manufacturer instructions and local regulations when using pool chemicals and testing products.

It leaving the tip exposed, make sure to lay it flat on a clean dry surface when awaiting the results. It is important to use a fresh sample collected in a clean dry sterile cup. Take the cap off to expose the adsorbent tip, dip the test strip evenly for 10 seconds right below the max line, and read the results at 5 minutes. IS YOUR POOL READY FOR ACTION?
Chlorine and Bromine are sanitizers that help keep the pool and spa water free from germs and algae build up. Testing for these will indicate the "active" amount of these sanitizers in the water.
Alkalinity / pH
Alkalinity and pH measure the amount of acidity in the water. Maintaining a proper balance of Alkalinity and pH will help keep the water from developing scale or cause corrosion and help the sanitizer work more efficiently.
Acid Demand
Testing for Acid Demand is a helpful guide in keeping the pH balance in check.

pH: Low pH results in skin & eye irritation and a high pH causes long term damage to your pool and equipment.
Total Alkalinity: Low or high alkalinity levels will result in your pools pH levels to fluctuate making it harder to maintain.
Important tips:
Store in a cool dry place away from water source to ensure freshness and longevity of strips.
Also to ensure freshness, when you take out a strip, put the lid back on properly.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to detect chloride or salt content in a salt water pool |
Answer: | No this will only detect the levels for a chlorine/ bromine pool water pool. |
Question: | I have two bottles of your tests strips. One bottle is pool and spa and the other one is spa and hot tub. I’m getting two different readings |
Answer: | Hi there, the spa and hot tub are calibrated a little differently to work better in warmer water. If you would like to send me a picture of your tested strip I would be happy to see if maybe one of the sets were defective? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Best, Nathan, JNW Support. |
Question: | Can I use these to test the chlorine in my house water |
Answer: | I don’t think these test strips are sensitive enough to detect the amount of chlorine typically in tap water. Unless your tap water has really high chlorine content. These strips won’t detect anything under 1ppm. |
Question: | Alkanity range is incorrect. Should be 80-120 no |
Answer: | 80-120 is the best range and yes the range shown on the product label is wrong. Most people use these for hot tubs, if you use bromine than even 80 is too low bromine spas should be in the 100-120 range |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many times each strip can be used |
Answer: | The answer from DeanP66 is correct; the other three are not. While it's true that the testing tube has a color scale, that's for testing pH, not Chlorine. This test kit makes measuring Chlorine levels very accurate. Is it still pink, or is it clear? Simple. No guessing whether the color is this shade or that shade. As for the pH test (where the color chart IS on the test tube), I have to say I love how easy it is to read. With traditional test strips, I can never tell what shade of orange matches the side of the bottle, but with this kit it's always easy to see. Both the colored water and the color chart are transparent, so you look through both at the same time right next to each other. No guessing. Plus, there's a chart provided in the book that comes with the kit that tells you exactly how much pH increaser or decreaser you'll need to bring things into balance. No more back and forth from adding too much and needing to compensate back the other way. You get it right the first time every time. If you want accurate measurements with no more guesswork, this is a great kit. Plus, you get to pretend you're a doing a science experiment! Of course, if you can't be bothered to spend more than 10 seconds testing your spa, go for test strips instead. |
Question: | Do you get the strips with your order or are the ordered separately |
Answer: | It fits all the bottles that come in the kit. I couldn’t tell you what it would fit if it didn’t come in the kit. |
Question: | can i use the brand test strips I already have with this reader |
Answer: | combined chlorine-yes. total dissolved solids-no. phosphates-no. saturation index-kit tests chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid (stabilizer), which everything you need to calculate the saturation index using the enclosed wheel. this is the best kit on the market. taylor also makes a phosphate test kit, which i use. |
Question: | Does it work for baquacil pools or just chlorine |
Answer: | Absolutely, the kit comes with 3 bottles of solution to test CYA. You use the small side of the pH tester to test cyanaric acid. |
