11 best pool chlorines
Pool chlorines are essential chemicals used in swimming pool maintenance to disinfect and sanitize the water. They play a crucial role in killing harmful bacteria, viruses, and algae, ensuring that the pool water remains safe for swimming. There are different types of pool chlorines available on the market:
Chlorine Tablets: These are solid tablets that are added to a pool's skimmer, floater, or automatic chlorinator. They dissolve slowly, releasing chlorine into the water over time.
Chlorine Granules: Granular chlorine is a quick-dissolving option that can be broadcast directly into the pool water or pre-dissolved in a bucket of water before adding it to the pool.
Liquid Chlorine: Liquid chlorine is a fast-acting form of chlorine and is usually added directly to the pool water. It requires careful handling and storage due to its corrosive nature.
Salt Chlorination Systems: These systems generate chlorine from salt added to the pool water. They are becoming increasingly popular as they offer a more automated and consistent way of maintaining chlorine levels.
Pool chlorines should be used in the right quantity to maintain a proper chlorine level in the pool, typically between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million (ppm), as recommended by health and safety standards. Regularly testing the pool water using water testing products is essential to ensure that the chlorine levels are within the desired range.
Additionally, it's important to balance other chemical parameters in the pool water, such as pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness, to ensure optimal water quality and comfort for swimmers. This may involve using pool clarifiers, enzymes, and other chemicals as needed.
Cleaning tools and chemicals also play a vital role in pool maintenance. Skimmers, brushes, vacuums, and pool covers help keep the pool clean and free of debris, reducing the demand for chlorine and other chemicals.
In conclusion, pool chlorines are a crucial component of pool maintenance, helping to keep the water safe and sanitary for swimmers. To maintain a well-balanced pool, it's essential to use the right type of chlorine, monitor chlorine levels, and complement chlorine treatment with proper water testing, cleaning tools, and other necessary chemicals as required.

But most importantly, you and your family will be able to enjoy the swimming pool or spa each season.

Testing the water weekly or bi-weekly, depending on use and outside variables, helps keep your pool/spa water healthy. Utilizing a DPD or OTO reagent-based water test kit, test strips, or digital testing will help you monitor the pool or spa water chemistry.
Adjusting and Balancing
Adjusting and balancing your pool or spa water chemistry ensures that you will get the most out of the swimming season. The benefit of having good pH and Alkalinity levels is that it will increase the ability of your main sanitizer to kill bacteria. Balanced pool water chemistry will also reduce chemical and maintenance costs. Balanced pH and alkalinity help prevent corrosion and scale formation on the interior pool surface and surrounding equipment.
Sanitizing
There are many different types of sanitizers used in various pool and spa environments. Clean and healthy water starts by establishing a proper residual chlorine level with shock or concentrated granular chlorine. The most common way to maintain a proper chlorine level is by using trichlor chlorine tablets in either a floater or chemical feeder. Applying these steps to your normal maintenance plan will ensure the elimination of non-living organic contaminants, bacteria, micro organisms, and algae making your water safe to enjoy.
Pool Fun and Safety
Now that the water is properly balanced and sanitized, it’s time to get in there and have some fun! We recommend enhancing your outdoor living environment with games, floats or loungers, toys, and accessories. Get creative!
Safety is of the utmost importance, and there are many ways to help make your pool/spa safer. Having a life ring buoy, a shepherd's hook, depth markers, coast guard-approved life preservers, door and water alarms and having your local aquatic environment safety regulations on-hand will ensure a fun and safe environment for your family.
Treatment
Even after all your preparation, sometimes life happens and your pool or spa can get away from you. In those moments, we need to start back from the beginning with testing of the water. Now that you have a clear idea of the current readings, your next steps will depend on the type of symptoms your water is presenting. This may include an issue such as algae (green, yellow, black, etc.), cloudiness, living organics, debris, and other water conditions.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why would these cleaning tablets be recommended for a 14x36 pool that only holds 2,400 gallons |
Answer: | We are the manufacturer of HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets and these are for pools of 10,000 gallons or more. For a 2,400 gallon pool we would recommend our HTH 1" Chlorinating Tablets. If you have any questions please contact us at 866-484-7665. |
Question: | Is this gonna blow up if I take it out of the pool, ppm is off the scale >10 and manufacturer is not answering their phone |
Answer: | No, the tablets do not 'blow up' when removed from water. If you're getting a high ppm reading you may be using too many tablets for your pool's size. Our pool is approximately 28,000 gallons, and we use two tablets in a floating container/distributor. We augment the tablets with once-a-week shock. If we have to add water (we live in the Florida Keys), or get a lot of rain we'll adjust the chemicals accordingly. Also, be sure you're running your pump and filter at least 8 hours a day for dispersal of chemicals. |
Question: | We just bought a 15 ft, 33 inch fast set pool. What would be the best to use |
Answer: | We are the manufacturer of HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets and one of these tablets is for 10,000 gallons of water. For your size pool we recommend our HTH 1" Chlorinating Tablets. If you have any more questions please call us at 866-484-7665. |
Question: | My chlorine is really low, the ph and alkaline are high. What do I add |
Answer: | We are the manufacturer of HTH Super 3" chlorinating tablets. If your alkalinity and pH are too high you will need to adjust those by using HTH pH Down or Decreaser. For more information please call us at 866-484-7665 and we will be happy to help. |

Kills Algae and Bacteria
Algae can turn pool water green. HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets destroy algae and bacteria to keep the water looking blue.
1 Tablet Works for up to 1 Week
This easy-to-use chlorine tablet dissolves slowly and effectively to sanitize your pool. One tablet keeps working for up to one week per 10,000 gallons.
Formulated to Prevent Chlorine Loss
HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets are formulated with cyanuric acid (CYA) to help protect against chlorine loss, and they contain built-in algae protection and clarifier.
1. Test and Balance pH Levels
First, make sure the pH of the water is balanced. If the pH is too high or too low, the chlorine sanitizer won’t work as effectively. The ideal pH range is between 7.2 and 7.8.
2. Proper Sanitization Requires Circulation
HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets release chlorine slowly. Run your pump at least 8 hours per day (or night) to ensure your water is properly sanitized.
3. Apply to Feeder, Floater or Skimmer
Place one tablet in pool feeder, floater or skimmer per 10,000 gallons of water every week or as often as needed to maintain a chlorine residual of 1-4 ppm. Do not add directly to the pool as this can cause damage to pool surfaces.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it ok to use this everyday to maintain our swim spa's (2500 gallons) chlorine level? I have to add about 2-3 ozs/day |
Answer: | 3" dia. by about 1.5"thick. the amount in a 50 lb. bucket I never thought about....I would say at least 100 of them...plus or minus... |
Question: | I feel dumb, but I can't figure out how to open this bucket. I've tried jostling the red tab and turning but to no avail. Any tips |
Answer: | Yes, i use it in my salt water pool, one bag a week |
Question: | Haven't ordered this in awhile. Do I have it right that the price for a single 50-lb tub has doubled in the last 6-8 months |
Answer: | I just sprinkle around pool |
Question: | How large are the tabs (3 inch or smaller) and how many tabs in each 50 lb bucket |
Answer: | Good question: I reviewed several sources and found the answers to be complicated. My opinion is that Granular calcium hypochlorite contains 65 percent of available chlorine. Therefore, if you are currently using sodium hypochlorite (12%), then you can make an equivalent stock solution by mixing 1.5 pounds of granular calcium hypochlorite to each gallon of water in the stock solution tank. Source of information http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=93148 The solid form (Calcium Hypochlorite) seems easier to use which is why I purchase that one. Additionally, the cost per unit of chlorine from the calcium hypochlorite seems to be less expensive. Again, sources of information show differing numbers including the amount of free chlorine released from each unit. It may be a good idea to try each one then test the resultant solution for the amount of available Chlorine. |

In The Swim Pool Shock Treatment
Swimming pool shock treatments are an essential aspect of spring pool opening but can also be used to give your pool a quick chlorine boost. Pool Shock is our most popular and versatile pool shock treatment, used to kill algae and bacteria and remove micro-contaminants that make pool water cloudy.
Use our Pool Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes, however to be sure that the water is sanitary, it is good practice to 'shock the pool', or super-chlorinate the pool every few weeks, to oxidize everything in the water, especially the invisible germs that may be harboring in the water.
Reliable & Easy to Use
In The Swim Pool Shock is our most economical chlorine shock treatment for pools, sold in convenient 1 lb. bags. Powerful formula contains 99% calcium hypochlorite in a powerful 68% available chlorine formula. Granular chlorine Pool Shock is used for a variety of purposes to sanitize and disinfect pools, spas and fountains. Easy to use Pool Shock effectively treats 10,000 gallons of pool water per bag.
Kills Algae & Bacteria
Use our Pool Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes, however to be sure that the water is sanitary, it is good practice to 'shock the pool', or super-chlorinate the pool every few weeks, to oxidize everything in the water, especially the invisible germs that may be harboring in the water.
Super Chlorinate
One pound of In The Swim Pool Shock will raise free chlorine levels in a clean and balanced pool to 9 ppm, per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Pools with excessive debris, algae, suspended particles or heavy sunlight will need a proportionally higher dose of pool shock, to compensate for such factors. A double or triple dose is often required for poor water conditions such as spring openings, bacteria contamination, or severe algae blooms.
- CLEAR WATER FOR SAFE SWIMMING - Swimming in crystal clear water does not mean your skin has to suffer. The granular chlorine is 99% sodium diclor making a relaxing swim not as harsh.
- LONG LASTING - Dichlor resists UV light, lasting longer than other types of chlorinating supplies due to built in stabilizer for your swimming pool, hot tub, or spa.
- DISSOLVES QUICKLY - Add 1 oz of this cleaning chemical to your pool for every 5,000 gallons your pool contains, daily for the best quick water treatment maintenance.
- FEWER CHEMICALS NEEDED - Our dichlor is pH neutral, meaning less chemical adjustments to be made by you! This pool chlorinator acts as a sanitizer, pool algaecide, and disinfectant. This granular chlorine dissolves in a 4-foot column, so there is no need to worry about bleach damage on your pool liner as with chlorine tablets.
- TRUSTED POOL SUPPLIES - Rx Clear is the best choice for swimming pool accessories and pool chemicals and supplies.
User questions & answers
Question: | I used this product and my cya level went so high that i had to replace my pool water. i assume this is stabilized chlorine? if so how much |
Answer: | The ant trap creates a moat of water that ants cannot crawl/swim through to get to the feeder...gnats fly so they would still be able to get to the feeder. As an ant barrier, this product works great for my hummingbird feeders and oriole feeder. I have 6 of these traps! Would highly recommend for ants and other crawling bugs. Good luck with the gnats! |
Question: | Is it fast dissolving so I can scatter it directly in the pool |
Answer: | Because vendors are hoping you won't be paying attention |
Question: | can it be used to shock the pool?how |
Answer: | I spray mine before each season. Only reason I bought nee units because the color had faded after 8+ years of use. |
Question: | So I can use this instead of chlorine correct |
Answer: | I regret that I am not able to confidently answer your question. I'd have to disassemble the unit and I don't have an old one to examine. It could be that you could soak ithe unit in the Permethrine. Good luck! |

Answer: | You need to Google that, I use one tablet a week for a 20,000 gallon pool |
Question: | How many tablets are in the package |

Answer: | We are the manufacturer of HTH Super 3" Chlorinating tablets. Yes, once you place the tablet in the floater you will want to leave it in the floater. For more questions please contact us at 866-484-7665. |

Question: | How tall is the bucket |
Answer: | Your question seemed odd but did get me to measure the bucket! Exactly 18 3/8". Hope that helps. BTW, it is a fine product. |
Question: | were do you put the tablets |
Answer: | Just a comment, I'm no expert, but I have had my 39x22 foot in ground pool for 25 years this year. My skimmer became brittle after about 20 years of use putting 3-4, 3 inch tablets in the skimmer, hardly anything to worry about after 20 years. Also, I get that the chlorine sitting there when the pump is not running can concentrate the chlorine and yes the water does go into your pool filter but the initial corrosive water is not sitting in the filter it gets pumped right back out into the pool and less chlorinated water is coming in behind it. I have had the same pool filter and pumps since my pool was built 25 years ago and have no problems putting 3 inch chlorine tabs in the skimmer basket. I have only replaced the inside of the filter once because some of the sections were ripped, replaced the skimmer basket once after 20 years, and I just had it re-plastered 3 years ago. Like I said before, I'm no expert this is just my experience. Now if someone can tell me how to get rid of the pool..... |
Question: | is there an expiration date for these tablets |
Answer: | no expiration ,just keep closed tight and dry. work better than other brands i have used . |
Question: | How many tablets are in this bucket |
Answer: | The description says that there are approximately 114 tablets per bucket. |

These industry-leading chlorine tabs have 90% available stabilized chlorine for long lasting sanitizing power.
How to use chlorine tablets:
Add 1-2 chlorine tablets to every 10,000 gallons of pool water.
For best results, we recommend testing the chlorine level once per week.
Increase dosage after heavy use, rain or warm temperatures.
Pool Care and Maintenance
It is important to maintain your pool/spa to keep it clean and healthy all year round. Good habits, such as cleaning your filter or emptying your skimmer basket, will ensure that your investment is protected for years to come. But most importantly, you and your family will be able to enjoy the swimming pool or spa each season.
Water Testing

Kills Algae and Bacteria
Algae can turn pool water green. HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets destroy algae and bacteria to keep the water looking blue.
1 Tablet Works for up to 1 Week
These easy-to-use chlorine tablets dissolve slowly and effectively to sanitize your pool.
First, make sure the pH of the water is
balanced. If the pH is too high or too
low, the chlorine sanitizer won’t work as
effectively. The ideal pH range is
between 7.2 and 7.8.

Product features
Boost Chlorine
Chlorine sanitizes your pool to remove bacteria and other hazardous contaminants to keep water clean. Use HTH Super Shock! Treatment to restore chlorine levels that have been depleted by the sun, rain and heavy use.
Kill Bacteria & Algae
Low chlorine levels, poor water circulation and warm weather can encourage bacteria and algae growth. Rid your pool of black algae, mustard algae and green algae and prevent regrowth by shocking your pool once a week. Don’t forget to brush the floor and walls of the pool.
Keep Water Clear
The fast-dissolving formula found in HTH shock treatments acts quickly to restore clarity to your water so you can be back in the swimming pool within 24 hours. Plus, the treatment won’t overstabilize your pool or fade your liners.
1. Test pH Levels
Dip an HTH Multi-purpose 6-Way Test Strip (sold separately) into the water to measure total alkalinity, pH, free available chlorine (FAC), calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid (CYA) or stabilizer. Balance water, and adjust alkalinity and pH levels, where applicable.
2. Apply Directly to Water
Before handling any chemicals, put on protective gloves and goggles. During evening hours and with the pump running, broadcast the HTH Super Shock! Treatment evenly over a wide area in the deepest part of your pool.
3. Wait & Test Chlorine Levels
If granules settle along the bottom of the pool, use a brush to disperse until granules are dissolved. Once free available chlorine levels are between 1 and 4 parts per million, your pool is ready to use again.
