12 best copper algaecides
Copper algaecides are chemical products used in swimming pool maintenance to control and prevent the growth of algae in pool water. Algae can be a common problem in pools, and copper-based algaecides are one of the effective treatments to keep pools clear and algae-free. Here's what you should know about copper algaecides:
Algae Control: Copper algaecides are designed to inhibit the growth of various types of algae, including green, yellow, and black algae. Algae growth can make pool water appear cloudy, green, or discolored, and it can be a source of irritation for swimmers.
Copper-Based Formula: Copper algaecides contain copper ions as the active ingredient. Copper is effective in disrupting the algae's cellular processes and preventing its growth. It also acts as an algaecide and an algaestat, meaning it kills existing algae and prevents new growth.
Compatibility: Copper algaecides are typically compatible with most pool sanitizers, including chlorine and bromine. They can be used in both chlorine and saltwater pools. However, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and dosage recommendations for compatibility and effectiveness.
Application: Copper algaecides are easy to apply. They are usually available in liquid or granular form. The product is evenly distributed throughout the pool water, and you may need to follow specific guidelines for dosing based on your pool's size and current algae levels.
Preventative Use: Copper algaecides can be used preventatively to stop algae growth before it becomes a problem. Regular use, especially during warm and sunny seasons, can help maintain clear and algae-free pool water.
Maintenance: Regular pool maintenance, including proper filtration, circulation, and water chemistry, should be combined with the use of copper algaecides for optimal results. Proper maintenance helps prevent the conditions that encourage algae growth.
Safety: It's essential to handle copper algaecides with care and follow all safety instructions provided on the product label. Copper algaecides should be stored away from children and pets, and you should avoid direct contact with the product.
Water Testing: Regularly test your pool water to ensure proper pH and copper levels. Excessive copper levels can lead to water discoloration and staining. If copper levels are too high, steps may need to be taken to reduce the copper content in the pool.
Effectiveness: Copper algaecides are generally effective in controlling algae growth when used correctly. However, in some cases, particularly severe algae infestations, it may be necessary to shock the pool with a stronger algaecide or superchlorination treatment.
Environmental Impact: Copper algaecides should be used responsibly to minimize any potential environmental impact. Avoid overuse, and dispose of any unused product according to local regulations.
In summary, copper algaecides are valuable tools for maintaining clear and algae-free pool water. When used in conjunction with proper pool maintenance practices and water testing, they can help ensure that your pool remains a clean and enjoyable place for swimming.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product work on Simply Salt System |
Answer: | I have a saltwater system and this works really well with it it just took a little bit longer to clear out all the alge . |
Question: | can you use if had to treat water for iron,, we have iron stains removed and water balanced but are now having issues with algae even after shocking |
Answer: | I have used this product for several years, and it does a great job, but it does a much better job if you combine this along with the addition of Borax to your pool. If you add Borax, raise your Borate levels to around 50-80, and use this product, you will not have any problems with any type of algae growth. If you have small dogs that drink the pool water, it is best to keep the Borates between 30-50, but no higher. |
Question: | How long do you need to wait to go swimming after adding the Seaclear |
Answer: | I can't recall that there was any required wait time but I would add to the pool water in the evening and circulate overnight. This algaecide is so worth the money and will last three months pretty much to the day it was first added. |
Question: | I have a fifteen to twenty thousand gallon pool will I need two bottles? I have tried expensive products and just want one that works. My friend on face book recommended this as a great product that works |
Answer: | My pool is 18,000 gallons, and I tried this product. The first two weeks the pool looked great. A slight drop in chlorine left me with mustard algae. This product will work if you keep your chlorine at the correct level, but so will the aqua chem 20% algaecide, which costs less than 10% of the SeaKlear when you consider that the maintenance level is only 6 ounces. There is no product on the market that will keep algae out of your pool if you don't maintain your chlorine level. Here in Florida, mustard algae is persistent, and is in the air, so we fight that every year. It is much cheaper to buy a mustard algae killer and shock the pool every week during the swimming season. One product I use is a phosphate remover. Most algaes require phosphates to grow and thrive. Anything you can do to keep the phosphate level low will help. Any pool place can test for phosphates. We do not have our pool covered, and have lots of trees. Leaves get in the pool and increase the phosphate levels, so I use the phosphate remover for that purpose. The one I have is made by SeaKlear. |
Question: | I have three crane pumps in my fountain. Is this product safe for the pumps? They are a mix of metals. Brass, stainless etc |
Answer: | Safe |
Question: | Does this product stain cement |
Answer: | It absolutely does not stain cement. My fountain is cement. When you first put FounTec into the fountain the water turns the color of Caribbean ocean water. Quite beautiful. But this fade in a couple of days. Even the blue water that cascades out of the fountain doesn't stain the cement. I have used this product for years (15) and reorder every year. I highly recommend it. Does not harm the birds that drink out of my fountain. |
Question: | What kind of non chlorine product should be used to eliminate existing algae growth before using the fountec as a maintenance product |
Answer: | It depends upon the amount of algae you're dealing with, realizing that chlorine-based products are far more effective than non-chlorine (with names often starting with "oxy ...". This article explains the pluses and minuses of both sanitizers: https://blog.poolcenter.com/article.aspx?articleid=6631 |
Question: | Does this eat away the finish/paints of a poly-resin fountain |
Answer: | Has not affected my natural rock & concrete waterfall. No effect on two in-ground black vinyl koi ponds either. Unsure of painted surfaces ... depends on the paint & how applied. |
Product description
Crystal Blue Copper Sulfate is a great pond algae control product for filamentous or string algae. Copper sulfate should be used as a pond algae treatment on actively growing algae in water temperature above 60F. When getting rid of algae in a pond, it is always important to treat 1/2 of the pond algae at a time to avoid killing too much algae and depleting the water of oxygen. Copper sulfate is safe for most varieties of fish (see restrictions below) when used properly. Granular copper can be applied in one of three different ways: broadcast crystals, place crystals in a burlap bag and drag behind boat, or dissolve crystals and spray. The application method we recommend is to dissolve the crystals in hot water and spray actively growing algae.
- 99% Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate
- Controls most species of algae like filamentous, string algae and swimmers itch
- Most effective when cast out on top of thick floating algae mats
- Granular Copper Sulfate, 5 Lbs
- Do Not Use with KOI or Goldfish
User questions & answers
Question: | This was used on pavers accidentally. How can I remove the blue form the pavers |
Answer: | I have horses I wouldn't do it. When I treat the pasture pond I always fence it off for a couple weeks. In the past I would use a cap full of bleach in a 50 gal trough to treat the algae. |
Question: | I intend to use it in small water features. Can anyone tell me the ratio of crystals per gallon of water |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Will this work on a small waterfall feature |
Answer: | In my situation, I have had no need for a water clarifier while using Spa Perfect. In fact, since I started using Spa Perfect, 4-5 years ago, I've seen a marked improvement in the quality of the water in my hot tub. |
Question: | Is this safe for horse trough water |
Answer: | i only use this and chlorine i just emptied and put in new water after the water had been in the tub one year and the water was still clear |

In The Swim Super Pool Algaecide
In The Swim Super Pool Algaecide is a concentrated, non-foaming formula, allowing the use of smaller amounts which makes it easier to measure. Super pool algaecide is fast acting so it saves time and money. In the Swim Super Pool Algaecide can apply as a treatment or as a maintenance product. Works on many types of algae. Can be applied to in or above ground pools.
Before adding In The Swim Super Pool Algaecide, make sure to brush your pool and clean or backwash your filter. Empty skimmer and pump baskets. Turn on the main circulation pump. Super chlorinate according to water volume and interior type. This will build a chlorine residual.
Pour the recommended dosage into a chemical safe container. Mix with 9 parts of pool or hose water. Pour the diluted mixture around the perimeter of the pool. Safe to swim immediately.
Pool Care and Maintenance
It is important to maintain your pool/spa to keep it clean and healthy all year round. Good habits, such as cleaning your filter or emptying your skimmer basket, will ensure that your investment is protected for years to come. But most importantly, you and your family will be able to enjoy the swimming pool or spa each season.
Water Testing
Testing the water weekly or bi-weekly, depending on use and outside variables, helps keep your pool/spa water healthy. Utilizing a DPD or OTO reagent-based water test kit, test strips, or digital testing will help you monitor the pool or spa water chemistry.
Adjusting and Balancing
Adjusting and balancing your pool or spa water chemistry ensures that you will get the most out of the swimming season. The benefit of having good pH and Alkalinity levels is that it will increase the ability of your main sanitizer to kill bacteria. Balanced pool water chemistry will also reduce chemical and maintenance costs. Balanced pH and alkalinity help prevent corrosion and scale formation on the interior pool surface and surrounding equipment.
Sanitizing
There are many different types of sanitizers used in various pool and spa environments. Clean and healthy water starts by establishing a proper residual chlorine level with shock or concentrated granular chlorine. The most common way to maintain a proper chlorine level is by using trichlor chlorine tablets in either a floater or chemical feeder. Applying these steps to your normal maintenance plan will ensure the elimination of non-living organic contaminants, bacteria, micro organisms, and algae making your water safe to enjoy.
Pool Fun and Safety
Now that the water is properly balanced and sanitized, it’s time to get in there and have some fun! We recommend enhancing your outdoor living environment with games, floats or loungers, toys, and accessories. Get creative!
Safety is of the utmost importance, and there are many ways to help make your pool/spa safer. Having a life ring buoy, a shepherd's hook, depth markers, coast guard-approved life preservers, door and water alarms and having your local aquatic environment safety regulations on-hand will ensure a fun and safe environment for your family.
Treatment
Even after all your preparation, sometimes life happens and your pool or spa can get away from you. In those moments, we need to start back from the beginning with testing of the water. Now that you have a clear idea of the current readings, your next steps will depend on the type of symptoms your water is presenting. This may include an issue such as algae (green, yellow, black, etc.), cloudiness, living organics, debris, and other water conditions.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 3 to 5000 gallon pool from walmart the water is green how much i need to mix this algicide to put in pool |
Answer: | Hello, we are the manufacturers of the GLB Strike Out Algaecide. The active ingredients are as follows: Triethanolamine, Ethanolamine, BASIC COPPER CARBONATE, and Citric Acid. If you have any further questions please give us a call at 866-484-7665. |
Question: | Okay, I get the diluting part, but what do they mean by "Dilute with at least nine parts of water"? I have a 20k gallon pool, bottle says i use 8 oz |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Should this be added directly to the skimmer so it goes into to treat the paper filter first? What about treating that for the algae |
Answer: | Ours is all well water, and it worked well for us. |
Question: | Can you tell me the active ingredients to the GLB algaecide |
Answer: | It depends if your filter is clean, but I will assume you backwash at least once a week for a couple minutes and rinse for about 30 seconds. Do the following: 1. put in the recommended dosage of algecide on the bottle. There is two recommendations on all algecide bottles for a preventive or maintenance dose, if you see it, it is maintenance requiring a higher dosage. Fill up your pool with tap water till it is above the top of the skimmer. Leave the pool filter overnight for 24 hours, next day. Turn off your pool pump, put it in Waste position, turn on the pump, remove your skimmer basket, and hook up your pool cleaning hose to the skimmer pipe attached to your pole and scrub vacuum. I am in the above ground pool doing all this maintenance the dead algae and other debris is being sucked out and the bigger stuff is collected in your pool pump basket. The dead algae and smaller particles do not go in the sand tank, they are be flushed out in your yard or wherever your out valve is directed (I have a spray cannon so it waters my lawn at the same time and kills the grass where it lands from the chlorine (LOL). You need to move very slowly a small step at a time so not to stir up the bottom until you finish the entire pool. Secure the power and put the pump in the closed position, remove the pump filter basket and clean it out the basket with a garden hose till it is spotless, and put it back in the pump and secure the top. Remove the pool vacuum and hose from the skimmer and the pool, and put the clean basket back in there. Next go to the pool pump and place it in the backwash position, turn on the pump for about 2-3 minutes or until the site glass shows clear looking water, then shut off the pump, move to the rinse position for 30-60 seconds and shut the pool pump off, turn to the filter position, and turn the pump back on. If the water level is not at half line, add water, also add quick dissolve shock directly to the skimmer. Wait 24 hours and check the pool and it should be clear, but may have more dead algae or dirt on the bottom. This time you can just remove the skimmer basket and hook up the vacuum hose and repeat the cleaning process which will collect the larger stuff in the pool pump basket and the algae will go to the pump, but you can move a bit quicker. When done, disconnect the vacuum and hose and put the skimmer basket back in, shut off the pump and if larger debris was in the pool clean out the pump basket as previously done and put it all back. Then move the valve to Backwash for 2 minutes, rinse for only 30 seconds, and back to filter after shutting the pool off for each position change. Again top off the water to the half way mark and add a little quick dissolve again to directly to the skimmer. PS: The main algae growth source is usually in ladders doing into the pool, so they need to be removed and washed with a strong Clorox-water solution and hosed off and allowed to dry. Algae needs two sources for growth. UVA/UVB Light and high temperature that is above 78 degrees which is why we do not have algae problems in the colder weather. I use a pool pump and elevate the water up in the air about 10-15 feet to cool the water over night and I live in the swamps of Louisiana. LOL |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this effect trout or bass |
Answer: | I treat my 100' x 200' x 4' deep quarry with 1 bottle of liquid Cutrine Plus that diluted, and I use a 1 gallon juicer to throw the mixture around initially, then it disperses itself throughout the whole quarry. I've seen algae react immediately on impact when I threw it in. I throw it in on one side of the quarry only and it spreads itself. The change is so dramatic that I've had swimmers over the decades willing to buy more for the quarry just to see the crystal-clear water. In 1994, I had a problem with red algae occurring, and didn't know how to treat it. I had the professor from Lehigh Univrsity and Muhlenberg College look at it and analysis it, but she had no solution to get rid of it. In my conversation with a man about selling me a tank with sand as a filter, he asked me why I didn't just use this product. I hadn't heard of it before, but he was correct. I called their tech department and followed through from there, and I've never been sorry. Cutrine Plus is tremendously effective and safe. |
Question: | Can cutrine plus liquid be used in combination with nt max microbial digester to kill algae and then have the microbes clean up |
Answer: | Kills algae .....I would say not safe for plants ..... |
Question: | Do u treat the entire pond or just were the algae is |
Answer: | That's a great question ! There are no ingredients listed on the bottle. I am going to ask the seller myself. |
Question: | Approximately how much to treat a 50' x 100' pond & how often? 1 to 4 1/2 feet deep |
Answer: | My bird bath isn't 5 gallons either! It's only 1/4 of a gallon, so I put in about 10-12 drops. That's the best math I could come up with! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much of this do we need for a 30,000 gal. pool |
Answer: | I have been using this product for a number of years. I had a very bad algae problem in my 30,000 gallon pool and someone recommended this product to me. Initially I had to use wthe whole bottle but it cleared up the problem quickly. I now dose my pool weekly with 6 ounces as a preventative. I haven't had an algae problem since. To administer the does I add the 6 ounces to a bucket of water and ensure that it is mixed well. I then pore it along the edge of the pool in the deep end with the filter running. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Should this be treated at night and is it safe for a plaster pool |
Answer: | I always mix it in a 5 gallon bucket with pool water before adding to pool. This will kill all the algae in the pool and filter system if treated properly and regularly. You could add directly to the skimmer but it is not needed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long does it take to start seeing results? I spread a hefty amount 5 days ago and havent noticed change. Pond section was 15ft deep |
Answer: | No, Cutrine Plus does not work for duckweed. I've used Sonar A.S. for duckweed--works great, but not cheap! |
Question: | can you swim with this product applied |
Answer: | is it just for maintenance, I used it when my pool went green . 1 bottle of this and 6 gallons liquid chlorine . Works every time. .If I remember its 4 fl oz once a week for a 25000 and works very well. |
Question: | How long does it take to see results? I applied 5 days ago and havent noticed any change. Pond seems pretty cloudy with algea still |
Answer: | Night treatment not necessary. OK for plaster pools. Follow package directions. Best algae treatment l’ve found. Good luck. |
Question: | Will it get ride of duck weed |
Answer: | You need to shock it with liquid chlorine first. Algicide is for maintenance after your water is balanced properly. Sounds like you may need some PH increaser. I'd try the Arm&Hammer baking soda. You can get it in 8 pound bags. |
