14 best cold water fabric dye

Cold water fabric dye, also known as cold water dye or liquid dye, is a type of dye used in fabric decorating, arts, crafts, and sewing projects. Unlike traditional fabric dyes that require hot water to set and color the fabric, cold water fabric dye is designed to work at room temperature or with cold water. Here's what you should know about it:

  1. Usage: Cold water fabric dye is primarily used to color natural fibers such as cotton, silk, rayon, and wool. It's popular for tie-dyeing, batik, hand-painting, and various fabric customization projects.

  2. Ease of Use: Cold water dyes are convenient for beginners and DIY enthusiasts because they don't require the use of hot water or high-temperature processes. They are often available in liquid or powder form.

  3. Process: To use cold water fabric dye, you typically mix the dye with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. After mixing, you can apply the dye to your fabric using various techniques like dipping, squirting, or brushing. The dye is then allowed to sit on the fabric for a specified period to set.

  4. Setting Time: Cold water dyes generally require a longer setting time compared to hot water dyes. The exact setting time can vary depending on the brand and type of dye used, but it often ranges from several hours to overnight.

  5. Fixatives: Some cold water dyes require the use of fixatives or chemicals to help set the color and make it more permanent. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding fixatives and setting agents.

  6. Color Variety: Cold water fabric dyes come in a wide range of colors and can be mixed to create custom shades. They are available in both standard and vibrant colors, allowing for creative and artistic fabric projects.

  7. Safety: When working with any type of fabric dye, including cold water dye, it's essential to follow safety precautions. This includes wearing gloves and working in a well-ventilated area to minimize exposure to chemicals.

  8. Washing and Care: After the dye has set, you'll need to rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove any excess dye. Follow the specific washing and care instructions provided by the dye manufacturer to ensure the color remains vibrant over time.

  9. Project Ideas: Cold water fabric dye is versatile and can be used for a variety of projects, including tie-dye T-shirts, custom clothing, home decor items, and more. It allows for creative and unique fabric designs.

Remember that the results you achieve with cold water fabric dye may vary based on the type of fabric you use, the dye brand, and your application technique.Always read and follow the instructions provided with the dye product for the best results in your fabric decorating projects.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I prepare this product: washing machine, spot dye, or other? Thank You
Answer: This really depends on the type of fabric. Some synthetic fabrics are made from non-porous plastics and fibers. The dye really needs to be able to saturate and get into the fibers. It will work best with cotton but will work on a host of other fabrics including many synthetic fabrics. Thanks so much for your interest in Hippie Crafter Tie Dye Set
Question: I plan on using this brand of dye (assorted colors) to dye 100% cotton rugs. Can you tell me what other products I might need to buy
Answer: No you do not need to treat your shirts ahead of time. Our solution comes ready to use. Hope that helps and thank you so much for your interest in Hippie Crafter.
Question: How colorfast is this dye? Can the resulting fabric/clothes be washed with warm water
Answer: Yes. We did around 15 adult size t-shirts, 4 pairs of socks yesterday, and there is still 5 bottle left. The color is so vivid, and the rubber bands and gloves was great plus. Family really enjoyed it and asked me to buy more.
Question: How much liquid dye does each container make
Answer: My shirt was dyed two months ago and it still stays bright now. Actually I have tried to dye on wet and dry shirts separately, and I found the vibrant color of wet one worked better, dyed spread easier and stayed more persistent.

User questions & answers

Question: How many adult shirts will this pack make? We are having a big tie dye party at my work and want to have enough
Answer: Very simple to prepare...instructions in packaging. I simply mixed with warm water and used from a squirt bottle on pre-folded shirts ready to dye.
Question: Question: I am wondering if I can use rit powder dye mixed with cornstarch and some linseed oil and make a paste for painting on polymer clay craft
Answer: Tracy. If you plan on vat dying look into getting the big bottles of powdered dye either from Jacquard direct or from Dharma trading. These little bottles are only meant to make 2 cups of dye at the correct concentration. Yes you should prewash with a good detergent like syntropol or Dharmas pro detergent. Then soak your rugs in a solution of 1 c soda ash per gallon of water (can use super washing soda, it's the same thing and cheaper) If you have hard water you may need a water softener like Calgon. If you are using dark colors you'll need pickling salt and urea to make your dye solution. The darker the color the more Salt. Gloves are a given.... but I suggest drop clothes and a good vinyl apron (cut one from an old felt backed plastic table cloth) Remember these dyes require a 24 hours processing time after you've dyed your item. put them in garbage bags and set them somewhere warm. Then you can rinse and wash.
Question: What is the container size of these powder dyes, how many oz in each container?.....Thanks
Answer: I have washed the shirts that I have Dyed in warm water and the color has remained bright and Distinct.
Question: Can these be used for bath bombs
Answer: It can make a lot of dye! I found a recipe card on the Jacqard website. It shows how much of each powder to make a certain color. Very cool!! For a 4-6 oz bottle, you only need about 1-2 teaspoons of dye.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a beautiful velvet bedcover.. except the color is rust, I want to try and dye it a navy/indigo blue would this work
Answer: You need to soak your 100% cotton shirt in a borax solution or soda solution before you “tie” it but these dyes are mixed with warm water and ready to go. You can even get a really cool effect by using the powder on a recently soaked but wrung out shirt. Sprinkle different colored dyes through a fine mesh seive right on the wet shirt or fabric in an open or tied form. Make sure to sprinkle all sides. Let set 24 hrs and wash in cold water, no soap.
Question: Will this work on Spandex
Answer: one teaspoon for 4oz.
Question: How well do these paints work on cotton
Answer: Possibly, it works on silk. I'd try dying a scrap of fabric first and then washing it to see if if works.
Question: What is the difference between the dye-na-flow and the regular jacquard fabric paints
Answer: Container has per fabric weight info

User questions & answers

Question: What container do you use, plastic or metal to dye in
Answer: No, if it is rust towards orange it’ll turn brown, if it is rust towards red it’ll turn purple... you would have to start with a white or neutral (muslin) for the due to work.
Question: How many bottles of dye would I need to dye 3 sets of scrubs? Medium pants and large tops. They are currently white
Answer: Not really, works best on 100% cotton. Comes out muted on blends
Question: Can you use this to dye water to shoot out of a fire truck for a gender reveal
Answer: I have great success with these on cotton. I usually use a fine brush. They will bleed into each other and they will spread if you do not have some type of resist. For a resist I have used wax, hot glue, white school glue, and even mod podge. I apply it with a fine tipped bottle. Air dry and then heat set with an iron. If I'm using a larger brush, I try to dab off/let it drip before applying directly to fabric. Also I have wetted the fabric to get a lighter/pastel tone. I hope some of this helps.
Question: Will this dye polyester fabrics
Answer: Dye-na-flow is a very liquid paint. Not a dye. It has to be heat set. It acts like a dye but there is no chemical reaction like there would be with dye and fabric. Regular jacquard fabric paints are much thicker than dye-na-flow paints more of a pudding or custard consistency. Both give good color on cloth but because dye-na-flow is so liquid it flows on to the fabric much more easily but won't work as well for stamping, stencils or printing on cloth.

User questions & answers

Question: anyone have pics of finished products of evening blue and royal blue and nayvy blue
Answer: I used a plastic bottles for my dye. when I’m applying the dye I do it on a old broiling pan so that the dye just falls through to the drip pan, but you can get yourself a rack and a dish pan to get the same results
Question: Wil this help me run for office
Answer: It's hard to say because it depends not only on the amount of fabric to be dyed, but also on how deep a color you are looking for. I dyed a few baby onesies to a pastel shade, so I only used a tiny amount. Maybe a fraction of a teaspoon. I would think you could get a decent shade using almost all of the jar. You also need soda ash. Good instructions can be found at the Jaquard website. Use rubber gloves to avoid dying your hands. Wash your scrubs without any softener. Also, pre-soak them for at least 15-20 min. I know I'm forgetting some of the details, so check the instructions. You can also find good instructions on Dharma Trading's website.
Question: How many yards of fabric can I dye with each bottle? I can't seem to find this information
Answer: NO!! It will dye everything it touches!!!
Question: Can this work on glasses
Answer: No. It has to be a 100% organic material - cotton, silk, wool. When I've died items with polyester stiching, it remains white as the rest of the material dyes the color. Also, this product has to be used with a soda ash soak, which helps the dye to adhere/bond to the fabric better. Hope that helped.....

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be enough to dye a full set of seat covers for a vehicle
Answer: The premeasured dyes are already in the bottle for you. Just add Water! This is fantastic kit! I have used them for many occasions. dye sets great.. does not fade or bleed on my laundry. I have used it on all natural fabrics. Cotton, (even some blended cotton fabs, like leggins!) Silk and bamboo! The dye works awesome! and it is terrific fun! I give it 5 stars!
Question: Does it come with rubber bands
Answer: Yes it will dye the print as well not as intense as the blank fabric but it will have some effect. Just go for it you will have a unique piece
Question: Does the instructions tell how to make words with the type dye
Answer: Yes i believe so. Follow the directions. Mix accordingly and wear the gloves provided
Question: How long does each bottle last
Answer: Red, yellow and blue. You get a bottle for each of those colors plus a four to mix either orange, green or purple. May I suggest to you that you make orange because the lighter colors are the hardest to create and keep while dying. Seems like yellow is always the color you run out of first.

User questions & answers

Question: DO I NEED SODA ASH
Answer: The picture of cans of Evening Blue is on Amazon. I haven't seen the picture of Navy blue but let see if I can get that for you.
Question: Is this close to navy
Answer: Not if you apply RIT "Just For Men" to your sparsely coiffed scalp, right before standing under very hot lights and telling outrageous whoppers to the press. The heat of the kliegs combined with sweat and unusually blatant fibbing may result in continuous rivulets of dye running down your brow and cheeks, for as long as heat and the pressure of "just following orders" are applied.
Question: Has anybody tried this dye in a front loading washing machine
Answer: With the whole bottle 2-3 lbs. I use it for yarn
Question: Would this work well to dye a lab coat? Also, will it stain the washing machine
Answer: I think what you're asking is if this can fix dye to the plastic frames of glasses. Rit DyeMore is supposedly great for dying plastics. Below is a link with step-to-step instructions for dying Legos which should also work for plastic frames. Hope that helps!https://www.ritstudio.com/2015/04/09/how-to-dye-legos-with-new-rit-dye-more/Also, to the mean answers: stupid is as stupid does. This question was actually perfectly legit.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on silk? Do I also need ash
Answer: No, but you do need a little bit of salt (a tablespoon or two).
Question: Could this be used on fur? Have a thrift store find that would be fabulous with a funky color
Answer: Yes it is.
Question: Can this dye be used with mica pigments to make paint
Answer: Most commercially-available fabric dyes need 1) immersion in 2) hot water with 3) a mordant such as salt and 4) time for the dye to bond with the fibers. A front loader uses far less water than a top-loader; it doesn't fill a tub with water like a top loader does, and just doesn't give the fabric enough time soaking evenly in a volume of water with heat to set the dye.
Question: Can you use this on plastic
Answer: If the coat is made of cotton it will work fine. It will work with other materials as well be will not be as dark as with cotton. And no it did not stain my washing machine.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy a White dye to create a tint, or do I simply use less of the particular dye to achieve the result
Answer: Yes it should and yes you need soda ash
Question: Can you share an ingredient list of these dyes? What are they sourced from
Answer: Maybe. But these Procion dyes won't react to give the vibrant colors that natural fibers do. Cotton, rayon, silk result in the brightest, deepest and most fast colors. Good luck!
Question: does this have to be used with hot water? I want to dye a wool sweater but am worried it would shrink if i used hot water
Answer: No, this is a powdered pigment for tie dying. It has no binder, or medium in it. It would crumble it you tried to use it. Also, probably in the long run the pigment is fugitive, meaning it will fade with sunlight. If I were you, I would be looking at buying acrylic paints--like Golden brand. They likely have some clear gels you could add your mica too. They have some that can be poured, and some that are heavy bodied that can be painted with, or used like spackling and spread on to things. You can add any acrylic color to your gel as well, to tint it. ---It would not surprise me at all if there is also acrylic paint with mica chips in it. I think I've seen it before, but was it the Golden brand---Not sure. Happy creating!!!
Question: Can these dyes be used for spot painting on dry woven wool? Can you mix a little at a time
Answer: No. I used a clear plastic bin to dye my fabric and it didn’t dye it or change it in any way.

  • Get creative and create something unique with an easy dye technique, like an ombre, dip dyed, shibori or tie-dye pattern
  • Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetic fabrics, you must use this dye in a stainless steel pot on your stove top to maintain a high water temperature throughout the duration of dyeing. Cannot be used in a washing machine
  • If dyeing fabric with less than 35% synthetic fabric (i. e. polyester, acrylic or acetate), use Rit All-Purpose Dye instead

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work as intended - on 100% cotton
Answer: Try to use less of the dye to obtain a lighter color
Question: Just curious. How dark does this dye actually get? Is it even remotely close to black
Answer: This is very technical information that I do not have readily at hand. I suggest you reference the Dharma Trading Co. site as they are the major purveyor of Jacquard and have copious amounts of information
Question: I have a light blue table cloth that has stains that I cannot remove, would this dye cover the stains
Answer: Wool won't shrink in hot water, unless you agitate it.
Question: Is "graphite" the new black
Answer: You can mix any amount (with proper respirator use) of dye powder into solution. I have never tried using dyestock on dry wool (either yarn or fabric) because the absorption would be so unpredictable - basically the liquid would just sit on top and sink down when and where it wants. The unreliability of this method as a technique is unappealing to me. The accepted method is to wet the wool and squeeze out all excess water and then apply the dyestock as desired. Of course experimentation is always fun and exciting with the awareness that results will be unpredictable.

Rit DyeMore Advanced Liquid Dye

A dye made specifically for synthetic fabrics, which includes anything with 35% or more polyester, acrylic or acetate. Each little bottle packs a colorful punch and is ready to deliver a custom touch to garments new and old, household items, and more. It even works on 3D printed items, lacrosse sticks, wigs and most plastics. Plus, just like our original formula, Rit DyeMore is non-toxic and safe for sewer and septic systems.

*Important Note: Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use Rit DyeMore with the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing. Accordingly: you cannot use Rit DyeMore to dye anything that won’t fit into a pot on your stove and you cannot use your washer because the machine won’t be able to achieve the water temperature needed for Rit DyeMore to penetrate the fabric.

Question: Can I wash in a machine? And how long should I wait before the first wash
Answer: The overall length including both connectors is 12 inches. The length of the wire between the connectors is 8 inches. Hope this answers your question.
Question: do you need specific ink or can you do use regular ink
Answer: How many amps is your charger for that? Also, those golf cart batteries are probably wired up in series so make sure you wore this up properly. These state they are rated to 5amp. I would go online and see what golf cart companies have available, they should have something bigger, the ones I’ve seen are actual three prong plugs like a regular 110 plug
Question: will the paper turn clear once it is ironed on
Answer: The size depends on which of the three you are interested in. The O-20 takes a 1" or 25mm hole, the O-30 takes a 9/16" 05 14 mm hole with a 14mm barrel and M14 nut, the O-40 takes a 25/32" or 15mm hole. It does not state it, but suspect they all have corresponding sized metric threads.
Question: Can a laser printer be used on these
Answer: I just pruchased the O-40 version for myoff road trailer as the descriptions says, the iwre is stamped 18 awg. For my powerfilm solar panal this s just fine (had to make a delphi weather pack to SAE adapter as I couldn't find exterior dephi ports only SAE). All the acessory cables and extension cables for the powerfilm solar panels all use 18awg wire. P3Solar panel wires are also 18awg. The weather protection cap on this port is excellent and seems much more protective and durable than others such as zampf.

Based on 24 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Jacquard Proxion MX Fiber Reactive Dye black dye.

  • Versatile Cold Water Dye - Works with natural fibers and can be used for tie dye, immersion dyeing, batik, screen printing, direct application, gradation/ombre dyeing, sprinkle dyeing, and ice dyeing.
  • Fiber-Reactive Dye - Proxion MX forms a strong covalent bond with cellulosic fibers, making it the most permanent and washfast of all dyestuffs. Mix the concentrated dye powder with tap water for cotton, linen and other plant-based fabrics. (Canvas, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal, paper, rayon and more)
  • A Little Goes a Long Way - One 2/3rd oz/18.71g bottle will dye more than 1lb/0.45 kg of dry fabric but very bright colors will require more dye and pastel colors will require less.
  • Improve Dyes with Additives - Procion MX Dyes are typically used with a soda ash fixative, which can be added directly to the dye bath or used to pretreat the fabric in tie dyeing and other “batch setting” techniques.
  • Moshify Scoop Included - This bundle includes the Moshify one teaspoon scoop to help you quickly measure out your ratios and get you back to dyeing faster.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used in a hobby craft sprayer
Answer: Go to this website to get correct answers to your dyeing questions. They say 6 2-oz jars should be able to dye 100 adult (average size large) shirts. You'll have people wasting dye, putting on more than they need but this is a good guide. Sodium Carbonate (soda ash - used to raise the Ph of pool water) is what you need for a fixative (nothing else) and is absolutely necessary (instructions on this page say it helps retain the dye - none of the dye will be retained without it). You can use Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (be certain it's super washing soda) which you can find in the grocery store or Walmart). The ingredient is just sodium carbonate, which is what is used to raise the Ph of the cotton so that it will accept the bond with the dye. You do NOT mix it with the dye itself or the dye is no good after about an hour. Tumbling a soda ash soaked item in the dryer does nothing to the soda ash in the shirt. Once it's in the shirt it's done it's job and washing it in water is the only thing that will ruin it (by washing it out of the cotton). Do not go by the instructions here in this page that say to use 2 tablespoons per 8 ounces of water. That is very wasteful. Lighter colors need just 2 teaspoons, midrange colors need 4 and blacks need 8. Go here and look up things about Procion mx dyes (what these are) and you'll find good instructions as well as design tutorials (many can be found on youtube). https://www.dharmatrading.com/
Question: How much is in each bottle
Answer: you can use chalk paint on "already baked" clay...also, you can make chalk paint by using 1tsp of calcium carbonate (very cheap and can be ordered on amazon, or you can use plaster of paris which homedepot carries) to 1 bottle of craft paint...the more chalk you add, the more powdery your dried paint will be...very cool effects on clay jewelry and the like
Question: How permanent is the finished look on shirts
Answer: 8 oz
Question: Can this be used on merino wool
Answer: if you want to make colored bath bombs use hi end cake decorating/food coloring past...these are highest quality pigments that are FDA edible, and therefore non-toxic...all PAINT pigments contain heavy metals that are dangerous for your health
