13 best rescue bee traps
Rescue bee traps, also known as bee swarm traps or bee bait hives, are devices used by beekeepers and homeowners to attract and capture swarms of bees. The primary purpose of these traps is to provide a safe and humane way to relocate honeybee swarms, which are essential for pollination and honey production, rather than exterminating them. Here are some key points about rescue bee traps:
Swarm Trapping: Honeybee colonies can swarm when they outgrow their hives or need to find a new location due to environmental factors. A swarm typically consists of a queen bee and thousands of worker bees. Beekeepers often use rescue bee traps to capture these swarms.
Design: Rescue bee traps come in various designs, but they typically mimic the size and shape of a standard beehive. They are usually made of wood, plastic, or other bee-friendly materials. These traps have an entrance for the bees to access and a cavity to house the swarm.
Baiting: To attract swarms, beekeepers use bait, which typically includes a combination of pheromones, essential oils, and a small amount of beeswax. The bait is placed inside the trap to lure the swarm inside.
Placement: Beekeepers strategically place rescue bee traps in areas where swarms are likely to gather, such as in trees, near existing beehives, or other locations frequented by honeybees.
Capture and Relocation: When a swarm enters the rescue bee trap, beekeepers can close the entrance, safely containing the bees. The captured swarm can then be relocated to a new hive or bee box, where they can continue to thrive and pollinate plants.
Importance: Capturing swarms using rescue bee traps is essential for bee conservation and pollination efforts. Honeybees are crucial pollinators for many crops, and capturing swarms helps prevent their unnecessary destruction.
Safety: It's important to handle bee swarms and rescue bee traps with care. While honeybees are generally not aggressive when swarming, individuals without beekeeping experience should exercise caution and consider seeking the assistance of a professional beekeeper if a swarm needs to be captured.
Local Regulations: In some areas, there may be regulations or guidelines regarding the capture and relocation of bee swarms. It's advisable to check with local authorities or beekeeping associations to ensure compliance with any relevant laws.
In summary, rescue bee traps are devices designed to attract and capture honeybee swarms in a safe and humane manner. They play a vital role in bee conservation, pollination, and beekeeping efforts by allowing beekeepers to relocate swarms to suitable hives instead of exterminating them. Proper placement and baiting are crucial for the success of rescue bee traps.

User questions & answers
Question: | The bird guards don't look small enough to protect hummingbirds. Do you make smaller ones |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, Thank you for sharing your concern with us. We do not make nor sell smaller bird guards. Working with ornithologists to redesign the product, we took every precaution to minimize the possibility of wildlife getting caught. Unfortunately with any sticky trap, there is a risk of an unintended catch. We are continually working on improving our products based on customer feedback. |
Question: | why is price point so high? these were about $7 previously. not worth |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, We thank you for using our TrapStik for Wasps. The improvements we made to TrapStik WASP did require a modest cost increase to our retail partners. We do not control the sale prices on AMAZON.COM.” You can also find our redesigned TrapStik for Wasps at bricks and mortar stores as low as $9.47. |
Question: | Why the high cost much cheaper other places |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, We thank you for using our TrapStik for Wasps. The improvements we made to TrapStik WASP did require a modest cost increase to our retail partners. We do not control the sale prices on AMAZON.COM.” You can also find our redesigned TrapStik for Wasps at bricks and mortar stores as low as $9.47. |
Question: | Do these also attract honey bees? I wouldn’t put up anything that would threaten their dwindling populations |
Answer: | *YES, IN F A C T - "Bee populations in the United States ARE declining(!) at a rapid, unprecedented rate. Since 2006, commercial beekeepers in the United States have reported honey bee colony loss rates averaging 30 percent each winter — startling, when compared to historical loss rates of 10 to 15 percent." That said, I have used several of these traps & only caught a few pollinators. This seems directly related to placement. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the expiration date on this product. I just received 9/2020 and our weather changed drastically colder and I will not need until next spring |
Answer: | This is a wasp attractant not a poison. It will not attract or poison honey bees. It is used used inside a wasp trap and will attract and trap wasps, not bees. (We actually keep bees and have never found a bee in our traps.) These attractants work really well to lure the wasps into the traps and, unable to find a way out, the wasps will shortly die within the traps. The traps can be emptied and used over again until their attractant wears out, then you buy the new attractant refills (which is what this product is). |
Question: | Does it come with one cartridge |
Answer: | I have trapped thousands of wasps in my three traps, and have found NO honey bees. The pheromones of the Queen wasp is the attractant. Must be different tha that o& a bee queen. |
Question: | Says in description works spring to fall but i have yellow jackets at my hummingbird feeder now and temps in 40s will it work |
Answer: | If you have lots of yellow jackets warning you away from that one spot, it's likely that there is a nest nearby. Look for holes in the ground or in nearby buildings, logs, rocks or other places where they can build a nest. You'll see the yellow jackets coming and going. The nests are usually underground, but I have found nests in stumps and once in a crack in the wall of a shed. Once you've located the nest, I'm not sure of a better option than poison, but you can localize it so that it has minimal effects on other insects and critters. These traps work well to catch the occasional forager, but aren't much use if you have a large number of yellow jackets. |
Question: | I already got 3 of these but peat control company who bought them from amazon put them up incorrectly. Could you email me directions so I can fix |
Answer: | Looks like two tubes. Zoom in on the bottom of the package. that's where it says two |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used inside the home |
Answer: | Yes, it could be used inside. The trap does have bait that attracts the yellow jackets. This cotton ball with some liquid chemical could potentially draw insects inside the house (but that seems like less of a problem than having them already in the house). |
Question: | What is the attractant |
Answer: | The liquid attractant included is mostly heptyl butyrate. It is also recommended you also use a bit of meat. Ours is baited with the attractant and a bit of beef and, now the meat has aged a bit, it does a great job trapping wasps and only wasps. |

From the Manufacturer
Why guess which pest is bugging you? Now one trap does the trick. The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap catches 6 species of Paper Wasps, 2 types of Hornets and 12 species of Yellowjackets – 20 species in all! As with our other RESCUE! products, the W-H-Y Trap works without killing agents. Instead, the insects are lured by the attractant, and die naturally inside the trap. The W-H-Y Trap uses an exclusive formulation of three separate attractants to lure these stinging pests. After they are lured to the trap, wasps, hornets and yellowjackets have two ways to enter: either through the top cap, or through the holes in the bottom cap. Once inside the trap, the insects cannot fly out and die either by drowning (top chamber) or dehydration (bottom chamber). The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap can be used outdoors wherever there is a paper wasp, hornet or yellowjacket problem. It can be highly effective to place multiple traps around the perimeter of a yard or area where insects are entering. The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap can be used in early spring when paper wasp, hornet and yellowjacket queens emerge from overwintering to look for new nest sites. It can also be used throughout the summer and fall to capture foraging wasp, hornet and yellowjacket workers. The first and only trap proven to capture Paper Wasps, Bald-faced Hornets and European Hornets in addition to Yellowjackets. Reusable. Durable construction holds up for multiple seasons. Environmentally responsible. Will not trap beneficial honeybees. No killing agents – insects die naturally. 2-week attractant kit included; no extra food bait required. Catches queens in spring before they build nests. Catches workers from summer through fall. Double-chambered design prevents insects from escaping.
- CATCH ‘EM ALL – Unsure if your problem is Wasps, Hornets, or Yellowjackets? The WHY Trap from RESCUE! attracts all of them, so you’ll never need to identify an insect. Simply hang outdoors and watch them pile up.
- HOW IT WORKS – Its unique dual-chambered design uses three attractants to catch 19 different species of insects. Wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets can crawl in through the top or bottom. Once inside, they expire naturally.
- WHAT IT CATCHES – The WHY Trap includes a two-week supply of attractant designed to attract paper wasps, bald-faced hornets, European hornets, and yellowjackets—not beneficial honeybees.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the attractant have to be replaced once the trap is full of wasps, hornets and yellowjackets |
Answer: | Bought this for son 2 days ago as has a hornet issue at his new house and there is already 11 hornets in it currently. 2 the first day! Not sure why people aren’t having luck as we certainly have. It says to replace every 2 weeks and have read some people used Mountain Dew with luck. |
Question: | Anyone have any success with paper wasps with this trap |
Answer: | I'm sorry.. the picture is small, I thought this was the sticky trap. we did have some minor success with this trap, but we ended up throwing it away. The green sticky trap works sooo much better. This trap eventually filled up, but it took several days before the first bug ventured inside. And several more days before a wasp went in. I would not purchase this again, the tall green sticky trap works better. Sorry I led you astray.. |
Question: | Hello does it work with honey bees and bumble bees |
Answer: | I never noticed any honey bees or bumble bees in our trap. Not sure why anyone would kill those. The lures (3 different types) that are included are supposed to be for wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets (which is why the trap’s name is WHY. Those are the ones that ruin your picnic. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Why place trap 20 feet away from yellow jacket nest, and why 20 feet away from outdoor activity area |
Answer: | The trap should be placed a minimum of 20 feet from known wasps/hornets nest to make sure that insects will find the trap. You also want to place it at least 20 feet from areas inhabited by people to ensure that wasps/hornets are not too close to people. Make sure to follow the instructions on the package. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a single refill kit which contains 3 attractants and instructions. The add says 8 pack so is it 8 singles |
Answer: | I have the same problem and was doing some research today. It seems if you hang these types of yellow jacket traps in the spring, as the snow is melting and the yellow jackets are coming out of the ground, they attract the queens and when the queen is gone, they leave. |
Question: | What is included? The original kit has 3 attractants: a green tube to mix in water, a yellow tube for felt, and a vial. What's in this pack |
Answer: | I can’t help you. Mine didn’t work at all and I followed the instructions to the nth degree |
- FOR RESCUE! YELLOWJACKET TRAPS – This refill cartridge provides 10 weeks of yellowjacket attracting power when used in the RESCUE! Reusable Yellowjacket Trap.
- POWERFUL ATTRACTANT – Rather than relying on chemical killing agents, this cartridge uses a powerful attractant that lures queens and workers, spring through fall.
- NO MESS – This handy plastic cartridge comes pre-loaded with yellowjacket attractant. Simply place inside of your RESCUE! Reusable Yellowjacket Trap (not included) and watch yellowjackets pile up!
- NO KILLING AGENT – Our yellowjacket trap relies on a non-toxic mode of action. The attractant cartridge lures them in—once inside the trap, they dehydrate and die naturally.

User questions & answers
Question: | The packaging in the picture is from a few years ago. Is there a way to know before I order that these cartridges aren't old |
Answer: | 8 packs of 3 attractant refills, totaling 16 weeks of protection(?). For me, this didn't work as expected. This is useful I found out by reading the small print, only in the early spring for wasps and other aggravating yellow jackets. This whole summer season, from May to middle September, I caught 4 wasps or other bees. It did capture a very large number(maybe hundreds) of gnats or small insects. |
Question: | Will these work for the western yellowjackets |
Answer: | This one comes with all of that, however they’re in packets that you cut open (except for the vial that goes on the top). They must have changed the packaging to save money. |
Question: | Does this smell really bad like the liquid ones |
Answer: | I’m not sure of the expiration date. I had mine hanging for two weeks when they were active. Not one in the trap. I ended up throwing mine away |
Question: | how many cartridges |
Answer: | Yes it comes with one cartridge |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this 3 pkgs or |
Answer: | No. Mine did not have an expiration date but they smelled right. EPA says that it has a shelf life of 12 years for use as a pesticide. https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/reg_actions/registration/decision_PC-100247_1-Jun-09.pdf |
Question: | Is this 3 separate packs or 1 pack containing three items |
Answer: | They work for whatever kind of yellowjacket we have in Colorado. |
Question: | How long does it work |
Answer: | There is a bit of a odor when you first open it (a little like watered-down break fluid), but I have noticed no odor once it is hung up... but the yellow jackets have! They seem to not be able to crawl in the traps fast enough! :-) I would also note that, for some reason, the yellow jackets around here seem more responsive to the four week refills than the ten week ones. Noooo idea why. Both attract, but the four week ones seem to be more of a pull for them. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Does this refill include the felt pad? I purchased a 3 pack and none of the packs had a replacement felt pad |
Answer: | 5 individually wrapped cartridges |
