14 best bait stations

Bait stations are devices used in pest control to safely and effectively manage and eliminate unwanted pests, primarily rodents such as rats and mice. These stations are commonly used in both residential and commercial settings, as well as in outdoor areas. Here are some key aspects of bait stations:

  1. Design: Bait stations are designed to securely hold bait and provide a protected environment for the bait to attract and poison pests. They come in various shapes and sizes but typically consist of a container with entry points for the pests to access the bait while keeping it out of reach from non-target animals, children, and pets.

  2. Safety: One of the primary purposes of bait stations is to enhance safety. They are designed to prevent accidental access to the bait by non-target species. Most bait stations are tamper-resistant and require a key or a specific action to open, ensuring that only the intended pests can reach the bait.

  3. Bait Types: Bait stations can hold various types of bait, including poison baits that are toxic to rodents. The choice of bait depends on the specific pest problem and the level of infestation.

  4. Placement: Proper placement of bait stations is essential for their effectiveness. They are typically positioned in areas where pests are known to travel or frequent, such as along walls, in crawl spaces, or near food storage areas.

  5. Monitoring: Bait stations may have transparent or semi-transparent windows that allow pest control professionals or homeowners to monitor the bait level without opening the station. This helps determine whether the bait needs to be replenished.

  6. Regulations: The use of bait stations for pest control is subject to regulations and guidelines in many regions. Users should follow local laws and best practices to ensure safe and responsible pest control.

  7. Effectiveness: Bait stations are considered effective in managing rodent infestations when used correctly. They can be part of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy, which may include other methods like traps and exclusion measures.

It's important to use bait stations responsibly and to follow the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations to prevent harm to non-target species and ensure the safety of people, pets, and wildlife in the area.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I do this myself with gloves
Answer: Hi, I routinely clean and fill the bait stations with the block style baits. I where nitrile gloves and keep very close control over any residue left in the station. It is very important that you remove all the old bait (usually it's just a few seed and rodent feces). You can do it.
Question: Does this work with Roof Rats
Answer: Yes,Opening is large enough for large rodents
Question: How often do you have to replace the bait
Answer: Depends on whether you actually have rats or just suspect them. Usually you can see some of the yellow residue that indicates activity... in our case it was about a week after setting up. If you only have 1 or 2 rats, that may be it and a long while before refill.
Question: Do have to remove the carcass
Answer: I don't think you have to, but you might want to if the rodent dies anywhere within smelling distance. Dead rodents usually have quite an unpleasant oder.

User questions & answers

Question: does it come with first bait
Answer: No it does not we bought bait off here too. My son bought a house it was infested but the stations and bait worked great. He has children and dogs
Question: Can these be used outside of the house? Will it protect the bait from rain
Answer: I am currently using all of them outside (I have fourteen), spread around a perimeter of 10 to 25 meters around the house on a 9 acre property in the mountains. So far it has been working well if you put them in areas you know won't turn into puddles (I live in WA state) other than your random slug hanging in there and eating the bait, and coyote or mountain lions trying to get into them (without success so far).
Question: Does this product come with a key(s) to open the bait station
Answer: I bought a case and it came with a key
Question: Are this baits stations refillable? Thank you
Answer: Yes, they come with a key that unlocks the unit, allowing refills.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the One Bite bait sticks fin in these boxes
Answer: I have no idea about the one bite bait, I know Tom Cat fits in them real good, it works really well.
Question: Do the rats get in and get trapped or do they get in eat and leave? Will the "Just one bite bars" fit in the trap
Answer: They do not get trapped. They eat and leave. The bars are on a rod inside the trap so they can't remove it only eat pieces off the bar. They are very effective! Best way to keep rodents out of the building is to feed them outside.
Question: Does the t-rex rat trap fit inside of this bait older
Answer: No, the T-Rex trap is too large and the bait station is not built to accommodate it. The T-Rex works good as a stand alone.
Question: Are these stations made for the outside & the elements? Are they heavy enough to leave them in my back yard without them blowing away
Answer: I use them outdoors and indoors. Outdoors I try to keep them sheltered from the rain to keep bait from getting wet & to attract rats looking for shelter. They are sturdy so it would take a strong wind to blow them away. they could support several pounds of anchor weight on top. What I like the most is being able to snap trap rats inside with a T-Rex trap.

Question: what are the physical measurements
Answer: I don’t have them in front of me but the traps are fairly large. Approximately 6” x 12” x 4” deep.
Question: Where do the rats die? Will my cat possible get one that has eaten the bait
Answer: They basically die from internal bleeding, some bait blocks do the job in one feeding and other bait blocks require multiple feedings. Rodents are like people when they feel sick, they go to a place where they feel comfortable (normally where they nest) and expire either there or close to where they nest. Yes, it possible your cat could get one. Read the label of any poison's you use. They all have warnings about pets and children and the treatments in case of poisonings. The bait stations tell you about placement of the stations as well. Read the labels and instructions of anything you use and you should be fine.
Question: Do the rodents die inside the box
Answer: No. It's just a box to securely have the bait accessed. No option for rimp0000
Question: Does the rodents die inside the box
Answer: No the rodents can't get trapped inside. The box is just for a safe option to have the bait accessed.

A snap trap for this bait box is also available on request of customer.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this with First strike soft bait
Answer: This has a small plastic container inside it. About 3"x2"x1/2" deep. It fits into the offset area under a metal wire thing. The container does not fit through the entry holes. If the Soft Bait is sticky then the container will move around unless you can punch a hole ans twist tie it to the metal wire thing.
Question: Mine arrived with no written instructions. Were there supposed to be any? If yes can you please post a link where I can find them electronically
Answer: No instructions. Just put the key in each top slot and turn (feeling a pop - sort of when it releases that side). flip up lid. add Bait to tray. I keep tray under the wire in side area. push down lid. Then place Station in wanted location. **** Don't loose the keys!!!! **** I had a devil of a time to find something else that worked as a key. Silly of me for having both keys together and loosing them when I was adding more pellets to tray. Still have not found them in their ZipLock bag. *sigh*Just as a piece of info. Some Plastic Dog crates connect with a Black L shape plastic latch (many spots). They work (the bump end) as a key. You need something like a T that is stout and you can turn 1/2 way.
Question: does it keep baits dry
Answer: The top on the bait station will keep rain from getting to the bait. I recommend not putting it in a low spot when water can puddle around it. I have mine set on top of a big flat concrete brick for added height.
Question: It indicate that this bait station is equipped with child and pet tamper resistant locks. does it come with a key
Answer: I got both bait stations and now can't open them because neither has a key. Which is lovely. I can look at them and shake them. The loose things inside I got out to make sure they were not keys. It is a poor plastic frisbee at this point.

TERRO T300 Liquid Ant Baits - 1 Pack

  • Kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t
  • Ready to use – set the bait, attract ants, and kill the colony
  • Stay-fresh tab keeps liquid bait fresh until opened
  • Snap-off design makes it easy to open – no scissors needed
  • Use bait stations along baseboard, under appliances, on windowsills and wherever ants are numerous

User questions & answers

Question: Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person
Answer: It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack.
Question: How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks
Answer: This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants.
Question: Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat
Answer: I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now.
Question: I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product
Answer: The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location.

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits

Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.

How Liquid Ant Bait Works

Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.

Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.

How to Use Liquid Ant Baits

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.

  1. Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
  2. Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
  3. Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
  4. Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the mouse die in the bait station or later on outside the station
Answer: The mouse dies outside of the station. No bait will kill a rodent instantly, most take 2-5 days.
Question: What brand and type of bait works in these
Answer: You can use any brand of bait. the block bait must be no bigger than 1.75 inches long by 1 inch high by 1 inch deep. I use Tomcat but they are all the same. I also put some chunky peanut butter on the bait cube. These measurements are pretty standard.
Question: Will this size bait station work for meadow voles? Which poison is best for that
Answer: I've been working in pest control for about ten years. These stations are going to be a little too small for voles... I have had a lot of success making my own. Use a two inch PVC pipe about a foot long, cap one end and place the bait at the capped end inside the tube. The best bait to use is a gopher bait or a grondsquerrel bait... Depending on the label, and your local restrictions. Place the tube around their holes and covered areas. Under bushes work great.
Question: is there a way to anchor these so dogs can't try and tear them open
Answer: Dogs can get into it!! We thought it would be fine but my dog tore this open and we had to bring her to the animal hospital and they said she would have died if we didn’t bring her in. Still treating her for the next month, hopefully the antidote is successful.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be placed on its side? It would take up less room
Answer: NO!! It would not work on it's side
Question: How wide is the opening? Could a squirrel get in
Answer: You feeling like you need to kill squirrels is ridiculous.. unless you're going to eat them? but this is a bait station they eat the bait and die later. it takes the mice a long time to die from this, from what I've heard, so I'm pretty sure it's not going to be as effective on a squirrel. You don't need to kill squirrels though. If the squirrels are getting into your bird feeders and such, there's so many better ways to keep them out of it than killing them.
Question: I am having a hard time finding the bait for this product. Can someone give me a link to the correct bait? In the smallest amount available, please
Answer: Tomcat All Weather Bait Chunx, 4 Lb on amazon. Works fine on the metal poles
Question: willl this work on ground squirels
Answer: If they are small enough to get in, I would think so. Haven't seen any ground squirrels in mine, however I can tell you that my ground squirrel population seems smaller, as in about gone... Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Do the voles, mole, rats and mice just nibble on the bait block or do they take pieces to their hole? I’m worried about it on my lawn
Answer: evidence of bait looks like they eat the bait within the bait station
Question: I want to get rid of the rats, but not the squirrels. Is this bait device small enough to not allow the squirrels to get to the bait
Answer: Small squirrels might be able to get in but it would be tight for a full grown one...IMO
Question: Can this be used with the one-bite bars? The bars have a hole down the center so I am assuming they can just be slid onto the metal rod. Thanks
Answer: Yes, the One-Bite bars work with this bait holder; I'm able to load three bait bars on to the rod.
Question: What's the inner diameter of the entry point of the tube
Answer: it is about 3 inches but half was blocked therefore about 1.5" hole. The design inside was a zig-zag
