11 best outdoor store yard ant killers
Outdoor yard ant killers are products designed to effectively eliminate ant colonies in outdoor spaces like gardens, lawns, and yards. Here are some key points to consider:
Types of Ant Killers:
- Granular Ant Bait: These are small pellets or granules that contain ant poison. They are typically scattered around the yard and are carried back to the nest by worker ants, ultimately affecting the entire colony.
- Liquid Ant Bait: This is a liquid mixture that is placed in containers or soaked into absorbent materials. Worker ants feed on it and carry it back to the nest.
- Sprays and Concentrates: These are liquid solutions that can be sprayed directly onto ant trails, nests, or infested areas. They can provide quick and direct control of ant populations.
Targeted Approach:
- It's important to identify the specific type of ants infesting your yard, as different species may require different types of ant killers.
Safe Application:
- Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for safe and effective application. This may include wearing protective gear, keeping pets and children away from treated areas, and avoiding over-application.
Environmental Considerations:
- Some ant killers may contain chemicals that can be harmful to non-target organisms, so it's important to choose products that are safe for your specific outdoor environment.
Persistence and Residual Effect:
- Some ant killers offer a residual effect, meaning they continue to be effective for an extended period after application. This can help prevent re-infestation.
Pet-Friendly Options:
- There are ant killers available that are formulated to be pet-friendly.These products use natural ingredients or specific chemicals that are safe for pets once they have dried.
Weather Considerations:
- Some ant killers may be affected by rain or moisture. Make sure to choose products that can withstand the weather conditions in your area.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM):
- Consider using ant killers as part of an overall pest management strategy. This may involve practices like sealing entry points, removing food sources, and maintaining a clean outdoor environment.
Brand and Product Selection:
- There are various reputable brands that offer a range of ant killer products. Some well-known brands in the pest control industry include Ortho, TERRO, Raid, and Spectracide, among others.
Remember to always read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure the safe and effective use of any ant killer product in your yard. This will help you effectively control ant populations and maintain a pest-free outdoor space.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this safe to use around plant |
Answer: | Si es en polvo muy bueno |
Question: | Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota |
Answer: | I bought this and have not tried it but I imagine if you put down the drain and go to bed it may work. I wouldn't run the water till the morning so it wouldn't be diluted. Roaches also love popping up from the seal around the sink and counter. Also from behind and under the back splash. In those hard to get in cracks I purchased a rose duster for a few bucks and used it under the house, holes in walls cracks in the wall, pulled out the kitchen drawers and dusted the area inside, under and behind all appliances and gaps, in the attic. I noticed Roaches coming in from outside so that's why I dusted the crawl space and attic. Good luck. |
Question: | What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work |
Answer: | It's just powder, so easily cleaned up, but it depends on where you put it...I usually use it in the backs of drawers and cabinets, along baseboards, etc...wherever you think the insects may be traveling from. Results are fairly quick...you will see a decrease withing days |
Question: | Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size |
Answer: | No, it doesn't even kill Roach. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it kill sugar ants |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks |
Answer: | It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit. |
Question: | Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters |
Answer: | I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days. |
Question: | My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution |
Answer: | Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away. |

Why is Bait Better?
Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.
Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.
With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Ant Bait take to work?
The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?
If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.
Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?
For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Baits are ideal for large ant infestations. It attracts and kills all common household ants including Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants and other sweet eating ants. To attract and kill ants, simply place the pre-filled, ready-to-use liquid bait stations outdoors in areas where ants are observed and, if desired, secure baits with the stakes provided. The bait stations can also be placed on decks, or in garages or basements without using the stakes. Ants typically follow defined trails from the nest to food or water. Placing the outdoor ant baits close to these trails will improve control. The patented outdoor ant baits prevent the liquid bait from drying out, providing the ants with a continuous supply of food, day and night.
- Kills the ants you see and the ants you don’t
- Pre filled bait stations are ready to use
- Contains borax
- Flexible placement: in the ground using the stakes or on decks, or in garages or basements without using the stakes
- Patented station protects the bait from the elements, prevents it from drying out
User questions & answers
Question: | How do I tell If they are empty? Unlike the indoor traps they are not clear |
Answer: | The trap should be replaced every 3 months. |
Question: | We haver grease eating ants. Is this the right product |
Answer: | Terro says product is for "Attracting and killing all common household ants including Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants and other sweet eating ants." Terro is a sweet bait; grease eating ants are attracted to protein. They might go for Terro; however if protein sources are still to be found in your house they will probably ignore the bait. I haven't had a problem with grease eating ants, but I understand that from folks who have that the Combat formula is better for attracting grease eating ants. You can also make your own baits for grease eaters by mixing boric acid (a white powder you can find in drugs stores or hardware stores) with peanut butter. Just make sure that the bait is out of reach of kids and animals (I have used boric acid/watermelon bait successfully with sweet-eating ants. However, it can only be used indoors, as sun dries it up and rain washes it away.) Good Luck! |
Question: | Will this work on fire ants |
Answer: | Yes absolutely I had the worst ant problem I have ever seen when I moved into my new home. They moved in because of a drought in Texas. The first two days I did not see much of a difference and was about to write a bad review, but I had to go out of town, I left and when I came back the next week there were no more ants, not a single one, in fact it has been almost a year and I still haven't seen one inside or outside since. This stuff is amazing. Also my dog ate 2 of the yard baits we were worried he would get sick but he was perfectly fine that's a plus also. |
Question: | Will these work for carpenter ants |
Answer: | Carpenter ants infest every tree on my property and I found them foraging inside the garage (very bad news). Mostly for the garage, but also because I have one very nice pin oak, I placed 2 of these just inside the garage door and at the base of the tree and within 1 month no more ants. So, I guess it works on carpenter ants. However, if you use the trap per the package instructions the carpenter ants are too large to enter. What you do instead is push down and rotate as instructed to puncture the internal pouch then very carefully lift the cup back up to its original position and snap it into place. This opens the trap all the way around an the carpenter ants can enter. I intend to buy more as it works on almost every ant on my property. And that's a lot of different types of ants. You might also try Bayer Advance 375A. Its a protein based poison and if the ants don't have a sweet tooth that day they go for it. The terro traps make excellent bait stations for the 375A once the liquid is gone. |

TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Baits
When it comes to ants, baiting should be your first choice. Try TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Bait Stations. These large bait cups can actually be used inside or outside and work to eras the entire ant colony. Sweet eating, common household ants will run to the baits and carry the bait back to the Queen of the colony. Once the Queen has received the bait, the rest of the colony dies off.
Simple to Use
These pre-filled ready-to-use bait stations convenient and easy to install around your home or yard where ants have been observed. Stakes are included to secure the stations on various surfaces, including grass or gravel. Use without the stakes indoors in the home, basement, or garage as well!
What Type of Ants?
Luckily, most ants are sweet eating and love out bait. Our TERRO Liquid Ant Bait works with all common household ants including: Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants, crazy ants, big headed ants and other sweet eating ants.
How it Works
When it comes to ants, always try to start with baiting. Unlike contact killers, which only target visible worker ants on your property, these baits include slow-acting ingredients that have a delayed effect on the ant's digestive system. This allows ants to feed and return to the colony where they can spread the bait to the young and queen. During this time, the number of ants may increase as they swarm to feed on the sweetened liquid before they begin disappearing altogether.

User questions & answers
Question: | how long do a can last |
Answer: | This is the BEST fire ant killer I have ever used, more effective than the granules. I use it in our pastures and it usually kills within 24 hours. Use about 1 Tbs. per mound and the can is 24 oz. |
Question: | It says it can be mixed with water but there are no instructions for that on the canister. Has anyone tried that |
Answer: | I am not sure, but would assume it is the same....we wanted the larger size. How interesting for your request, as my husband used ours on our neighbor's yard this morning. It really will kill ants, and gets used each time we see an ant hill on our driveway. |
Question: | What other things that it kills |
Answer: | I couldn't tell you for sure but it will run them off to build another mound. I do not believe it is a 100% any killer although I believe it gets some of them. They will build another mound. I haven't found a good ant killer, except what the EPA outlawed many years ago. Good luck! |
Question: | Does it kill most ants other than fire ants |
Answer: | Outdoor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would someone list the active ingredients percentage by weight |
Answer: | Hi Lisa! Yes! You may apply to trees and other ornamental landscape plants to control listed pests. You would just not want to apply to edible trees or plants. |
Question: | Can this be broadcasted in 12,000 foot garden without hurting plants(tomatoes, squash, peas,, lettuce)just got garden tilled & saw few ant mounds |
Answer: | Thank you for asking! Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus would become rain proof, once it has been allowed to dry. However, you would not want to reapply for at least 2 weeks. |
Question: | Is this the same as the stuff that comes in the hard plastic container? I don't want to broadcast it. I just want to put it around the mounds |
Answer: | We answered this a few years back and did not mantion that it is a CONCENTRATED liquid. Wear protective masks and full coverage clothing. We spray for ants around the foundation and our deck every spring and we're set for the entire year. My grandson recommended a battery powered sprayer sold by Tractor supply for about $110. It makes up to about 19 gallons of diluted mix. Fantastic buy. Will reach 15 foot trees with ease. We thoroughly sprayed the top and underside of our deck with ease. Never see an ant. Fabulous product. Can hook it up to garden tractor battery or regular car battery, |
Question: | How long before the ants die? It's been 3 days so far and all the mounds are just as active as before. It hasn't rained, so that is not the problem |
Answer: | The instructions say yes to both. |

The Two-Step Method
What is the Two-Step Method?
The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.
- Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
- Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.
Why is this method so effective?
Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant bait take to work?
Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?
After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.
IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?
While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.

Ants
Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.
Fleas
Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.
Ticks
Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.
Spiders
Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.
Chinch Bugs
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.
Cutworms
If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.
Mole Crickets
Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.
Sod Webworms
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.

HOW DO YOU USE IT?
FOR TREATMENT OF ACTIVE PROBLEMS. Treats up to 5,000 square feet. Apply this powerful spray twice within 2-10 days to your outdoor areas (like the lawn and patio) to ensure you’re eliminating whatever pests are present and full pest life cycle. Start at your home and spray top to bottom. Continue onto the lawn, working your way back to the fence line. Walk at a steady pace and use a sweeping motion, slightly overlapping treated areas. Complete coverage is important, especially in shaded areas. Once control is established, the less frequently you’ll need to apply. To ensure you’re fully treating your pest problem, we recommend using in conjunction with the Flea & Tick Control for Pets + Home spray. Pro Tip: For ants, soak mounds and repeat as needed to establish control below ground.
FOR PREVENTION AND MAINTENANCE. Prevents up to 5,000 square feet. For ongoing control, apply as needed. Higher concentrations and year-round use may enhance results.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
THE POWER OF CEDAR OIL. Cedar oil affects octopamine, which is essential to life for pheromone-driven pests (like fleas and ticks) as it is responsible for regulating heart rate and movement in insect pests. Cedar oil blocks the octopamine neurotransmitter receptors in pests, causing pests to be repelled from the area. When contacted, pests suffocate and die. Mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and beneficial, sight-driven insects are not affected by cedar oil because they do not have octopamine neurotransmitters.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN READY-TO-USE AND CONCENTRATE. The Ready-to-Use spray is quick and easy, hooking up directly to a garden hose and is already diluted as the water comes out. The Do-it-Yourself Concentrate is more cost-effective. It must be properly diluted and requires a separate applicator.
INGREDIENTS: Active: 12.63% Cedarwood Oil, 2.73% Sesame Oil, 1.09% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Inert: 83.54% (Water, Glyceryl Monooctanoate, Soap, Glyceryl Monodecanoate).Total: 100.0%.
