14 best ortho ant poisons
Ortho is a brand that produces a variety of pest control products, including ant poisons. These products are designed to help homeowners manage ant infestations in and around their homes. Ortho ant poisons are categorized under the broader umbrella of pest control, specifically targeting ants.
Ant poisons typically come in various forms, such as granules, sprays, or baits. Granules are usually spread around outdoor areas to create a barrier that prevents ants from entering a particular area. Sprays are used to directly target ants on surfaces or in specific areas.Baits are designed to attract ants and are often placed in strategic locations where ants are likely to forage. The bait is then carried back to the nest, effectively eliminating the colony.
These products are commonly found in the "Pest Control" section of stores, particularly in the "Patio Lawn Garden" department. They are intended to be used in outdoor spaces, such as lawns, gardens, and around the perimeter of homes.
It's worth noting that specific formulations and application methods may vary depending on the product line and the specific ant species being targeted. For detailed instructions on how to use Ortho ant poisons effectively, it's best to consult the product label or any accompanying instructional materials provided by the manufacturer.

Question: | Is this safe to use around plant |
Answer: | They suspend in water |
Question: | Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota |
Answer: | 6 inch.. Baby brushes at 4.5 I think.. Babies for the spring.. Big ones for late summer and fall |
Question: | What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work |
Answer: | They work well on largemouth but you will get more bites on the baby brush hogs for sure ! I like the big ones because I have caught several big fish on them and tournament fishing you have to catch some bigger fish to compete |
Question: | Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size |
Answer: | In my opinion, this bait is best used for flipping into heavy cover, like weeds, grass or lay-down logs, etc. I rig it 'texposed' with a 5/0 extra-wide gap hook and a 1/2 ounce(or heavier, depending on the cover) bullet weight. If this terminology is unfamiliar to you, there are lots of good videos on youtube- it's abit complicated to explain with text, but by actually watching someone do it, it's not hard at all to learn. Use heavy line, at least 20# if you're using mono or fluorocarbon, but I personally use braid, 50# or even 65#, and a stout rod.All that being said, one CAN use the smaller sizes as a drop shot bait. Here is where spinning gear and lighter line, 8# or 10# test, depending on cover/water clarity, can come into play. Again, youtube can show you how to rig a Brush Hog on a drop shot rig. |

Product description
To kill common household ants, simply place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically formulated to allow worker ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony . The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Monitor the baits regularly for activity, but do not interfere with the ants or baits. Replace with additional baits when the first set is depleted. Depending on the size of the ant infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.
- 12 bait stations included
- Kills all common household ants
- Pre-filled, ready-to-use bait stations
- Patented design prevents bait from drying out
- Attracts ants fast
- Contains Borax
- Place baits near ant trails or where ants are numerous
- Use all six baits to ensure sufficient supply for the ants
User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person |
Answer: | It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack. |
Question: | How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants. |
Question: | Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat |
Answer: | I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now. |
Question: | I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product |
Answer: | The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location. |

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits
Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.
How Liquid Ant Bait Works
Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.
How to Use Liquid Ant Baits
TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.
- Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
- Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
- Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
- Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

User questions & answers
Question: | would someone list the active ingredients percentage by weight |
Answer: | Hi Lisa! Yes! You may apply to trees and other ornamental landscape plants to control listed pests. You would just not want to apply to edible trees or plants. |
Question: | Can this be broadcasted in 12,000 foot garden without hurting plants(tomatoes, squash, peas,, lettuce)just got garden tilled & saw few ant mounds |
Answer: | Thank you for asking! Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus would become rain proof, once it has been allowed to dry. However, you would not want to reapply for at least 2 weeks. |
Question: | Is this the same as the stuff that comes in the hard plastic container? I don't want to broadcast it. I just want to put it around the mounds |
Answer: | We answered this a few years back and did not mantion that it is a CONCENTRATED liquid. Wear protective masks and full coverage clothing. We spray for ants around the foundation and our deck every spring and we're set for the entire year. My grandson recommended a battery powered sprayer sold by Tractor supply for about $110. It makes up to about 19 gallons of diluted mix. Fantastic buy. Will reach 15 foot trees with ease. We thoroughly sprayed the top and underside of our deck with ease. Never see an ant. Fabulous product. Can hook it up to garden tractor battery or regular car battery, |
Question: | How long before the ants die? It's been 3 days so far and all the mounds are just as active as before. It hasn't rained, so that is not the problem |
Answer: | The instructions say yes to both. |

The Two-Step Method
What is the Two-Step Method?
The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.
- Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
- Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.
Why is this method so effective?
Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant bait take to work?
Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?
After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.
IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?
While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.

Ants
Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.
Fleas
Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.
Ticks
Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.
Spiders
Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.
Chinch Bugs
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.
Cutworms
If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.
Mole Crickets
Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.
Sod Webworms
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hey, could someone provide a bief explanation of how and where this is applied |
Answer: | Mix according to directions and spray a two foot band on your house and a two foot band on the ground. This will keep insects from getting in and create a kill zone that will kill them when they cross. For a termite barrier, dig a trench around your house and pour the diluted solution in. Spray the ground with the dirt you've filled the trench with. The barrier will last five years. If termites are inside your house, call a professional exterminator because getting rid of them is difficult. |
Question: | What is the ratio ratio of concentrate to water |
Answer: | didn't buy the concentrate. Use as it sprays with no problem. Works well, so far!!! |
Question: | Can I spray this in my house |
Answer: | I would not spray it in the house. It has a very strong odor. |
Question: | What type of termite does it kill? Subterranean and dry wood |
Answer: | Both. After treating affected areas the best long term protection is to make a shallow trench around the areas you want to protect. |

Emerald Ash Borer
The Emerald Ash Borer predominately affects Ash Trees. And while the adults do relatively little damage by nibbling the leaves of the tree, their larvae feast on its inner pulp. This attack hinders the tree’s ability to deliver water and nutrients throughout its entirety, which can result in death when left untreated.
Leafminers
Leafminers are most damaging in their larval stage when they live inside the leaves of a plant and eat the tissues there. They can be identified by the trail pattern of damage on the leaf itself.
Scales
Scales are sucking pests that can attach themselves to plants. They predominately affect perennial plants such as trees and shrubs.
Ortho Tree & Shrub Insect Control Granules
To combat the listed insects, evenly distribute the product on the soil surface within 1.5 feet of the base of the plant.
Only apply to moist soil. Do not apply to dry, saturated or frozen soil or when plants are not actively growing and taking up water from soil.
Always check the label for detailed directions specific to trees and shrubs.

User questions & answers
Question: | It seems too high off the floor for ants to crawl in, is this a problem |
Answer: | I did not see that as a problem. I saw very small ants getting to the bait. After a couple of days the ants were no longer around. |
Question: | Can these be used outside |
Answer: | I'm not sure about outside but it works great on the inside. |
Question: | Does it work on fire ants |
Answer: | I have used this product inside the house only - and that was on sugar ants. I have not tried it for fire ants, but I doubt it would be effective. My experience with fire ants is that there are so many in a mound they would probably fill up the trap in a few minutes and the others would walk right over them! |

User questions & answers
Question: | All 4 of these sprays appear to have the same ingredients. the 'ant & roach' and 'crawling bug' even have identical concentrations. what gives |
Answer: | It works great! I used it seven months ago and it's still working. Remember, when you use this treatment you will see a lot of bugs coming out of their hiding places. Some will be dead and some will be "twitching" violently while dying. It will take a few days before you will not see any bugs because the treatment is working. I was killing bugs as they were headed toward the ceiling. I'd say in about 3 to 4 weeks after treatment you will be bug free! But, I still keep a can of Raid just in case I see an occasional bug trying to escape, plus I have a fly swatter to zap a bug from time to time headed for the ceiling. But, this is very rare. |
Question: | Does it actually kill cockroaches on contact |
Answer: | I do not and I have a small dog but I spray when she is having Spa Day and is not home for several hours. |
Question: | will this kill love bugs |
Answer: | 11 ozs per can. One more thing, you do not have to use this spray like other name brand sprays. 'A lil' dab will do ya'...I spray in every corner of my apartment. In my kitchen, I go a little heavier...spraying inside cabinets and drawers and around my stove. This stuff is like magic and the result is instant. It's worth the money. I hope I helped. |
Question: | Is it odorless |
Answer: | Hello valued customer, are you seeking the plastic tube or the sleeve for the coins? |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it kill sugar ants |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks |
Answer: | It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit. |
Question: | Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters |
Answer: | I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days. |
Question: | My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution |
Answer: | Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away. |

Why is Bait Better?
Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.
Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.
With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Ant Bait take to work?
The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?
If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.
Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?
For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

Question: | invaded with tiny thin bugs do not hop or fly so not fleas ants or termites, no idea what they are, will this work |
Answer: | The only way you will know is to try it. It sure works on ants. I wear rubber gloves, spray it on a towel and wipe down areas where they are walking. Wash your hands well. You could go to your local college and ask the biology department if they could identify your bugs and find out what they are. I don't think that I would want to spray this into the air. |
