13 best lawn insecticides
Lawn insecticides are chemicals or substances used to control and manage insect pests in lawns, gardens, and other outdoor spaces. They are designed to target and eliminate specific insects that can damage plants, lawns, and trees. There are various types of lawn insecticides, including:
Insecticide Sprays: These are liquid solutions that can be sprayed directly onto plants and grass to kill insects on contact. They are commonly used for targeted pest control.
Granular Insecticides: Granules are small, solid particles that can be spread across the lawn. When watered, they dissolve and release the insecticide, creating a barrier against insects in the soil.
Systemic Insecticides: These are absorbed by plants and move within the plant's vascular system. When insects feed on the plant, they ingest the insecticide and are consequently eliminated.
Natural and Organic Insecticides: Derived from natural sources like neem oil, diatomaceous earth, or garlic, these insecticides are considered environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals.
Residual Insecticides: These insecticides remain active for an extended period, providing long-lasting protection against insects. They are often used for preventive pest control.
It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines when using insecticides. Safety precautions, application rates, and timing are crucial factors to consider. Additionally, it's important to identify the specific pest problem you're dealing with to choose the right type of insecticide for effective control.
Regular maintenance of your lawn, including proper watering, mowing, and soil care, can also help minimize the need for insecticides by promoting a healthy lawn that is more resistant to pests.
Always store insecticides in a safe place away from children and pets and dispose of containers properly according to local regulations. If you have specific questions about a particular type of insecticide or pest control method, feel free to ask!

User questions & answers
Question: | is this biodegradable |
Answer: | I question your competency. Yes it is biodegradable |
Question: | How often is reapplication needed |
Answer: | Here in Western PA we have been having some serious rain issues. I don't doubt the manufacturers specs on the package about using the product every ninety days. However, in my case? About three days after application we had RAIN. The resulting plethora of gnats, skeeter's, flies, no-see-ums" leads me to doubt the product was invented by Noah and could survive a flood. So, if the rain is scheduled to leave for at least a week. I will re-apply. I have had great success with Ortho products in the past. |
Question: | Can pets be in the yard |
Answer: | I put it out in my yard and let my dogs loose in the yard couple of hours later and they were fine. I also have a few stray cats that were go though my yard and lay around in my yard and they were fine also. |
Question: | Does this kill millipedes? We figured in we got infested outside after buying garden plants at one of the big box garden stores |
Answer: | More than likely, centipedes are listed on the bag among what it kills so i would imagine it does. |

Ants
Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.
Fleas
Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.
Ticks
Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.
Spiders
Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.
Chinch Bugs
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.
Cutworms
If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.
Mole Crickets
Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.
Sod Webworms
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used under fruit trees ie. Apple, pears, blueberries etc?? I need to be 100% sure and would like responses fro those whom are certain |
Answer: | I always want to give good information on this poisen. I can not answer your question. I use Bayer poisen for the yard and around the headges and for flea controll. I contacted Bayer about useing it during the hot summer months in Fl when the tempature reaches above 90*; Bayer informed me that it stops killing insects above 90*. For fruit trees you need to call their 800 # and ask them or your county Agracultrial Agent. Have a safe growing season. Dallas |
Question: | Will this work in flower beds with weed fabric and ceder mulch on top? Worried it won't get down to the grubs |
Answer: | This substance is a solvent. it will eventually dissolve and absolve in ground, so it would work when spread over mulch. |
Question: | does this kill chiggers? the normal insect killers won't work because they're arachnids, but noticed it does kill spiders and ticks |
Answer: | Yes it specifically lists chiggers as a pest it will control. Thanks for considering your purchase from Amazon through AgCareDirect. |
Question: | will this kill honeybees |
Answer: | Thats a good QUESTION. I dont know I would call Bayer and talk to them. Also make sure you read the MSDS INFORMATION and the instructions on how to speead it. Bayer is good for killing fleas and ticks. It lasts three months and use it untill the out door temps hit 90* or above. I live in Jax Fl. I use a comertial pest controll service year round and I have them spray for fleas during the 90* hot summer months. Comertial liquid poisen kills the fleas and ticks above 90*. I either just dump the bag in my spreader or sometimes use rubber gloves and speead it around the foundation of my house to kill roaches before they have a chance to get in. Also, BAYER does not kill anything if you use it during the hot days of summer when the tempature is above 90*. I called Bayer and read it on the MSDS sheet. Hope I helped you out. I was a Hamat Tech when I was a Firefighter now I am retired. Have a good spring. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do have to wait to mow again after applying duocide |
Answer: | Most granular products fall into the thatch layer so if it hasn’t been watered in you likely won’t suck up many of the granular. I would recommend lightly watering in after you apply which allows the granuals to disperse. |
Question: | Why can't this Product be shipped to California |
Answer: | Ask your state and local government. It probably has to do with their restrictions. |
Question: | They are destroying my tangerine plants. Applying it 2 ft away won't help. If there are no fruits, can it be applied closer to the root |
Answer: | Ues |
Question: | Is it safe to use at the same time I put down pre-emergent |
Answer: | I can’t answer that; I sprayed my pre-emergent back in February and I didn’t didnt put the Andersons Duocide Lawn Insecticide until April. I do suggest watching the short video on lightly watering and then 30 minutes later repeat to expedite its absorbing into the ground. I did apply other fertilizers etc. prior to the insecticide though. It does break down very easily, so I would say if the insecticide was put down and watered into the ground as recommended then I wouldn’t think that there would be a problem |

Eliminate Pests Above and Below the Surface
The Andersons DuoCide is a professional-grade, curative lawn insect control. Fast acting DuoCide eliminates more than 50 common lawn pests, including grubs, ticks, fire ants and fleas. With a unique formula containing both bifenthrin and carbaryl, DuoCide eliminates lawn pests above and below the soil surface with a single application.
DuoCide also features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granule (DG) Technology, which makes spreading easier and increases effectiveness. With DG Technology, DuoCide granules break down upon contact with water and disperse into thousands of microparticles that move through the turf canopy and into the soil for maximum performance.
Applying DuoCide
Application rates range from 2-8 lbs/1000 sq ft and vary based on pest(s) to be controlled. See the chart below for more detail.
Proper application timing depends on pest(s) to be controlled. For surface pests (ants, spiders, billbugs, chinch bugs, etc.), treat when pests or turf damage symptoms first appear. For subsurface pests (white grubs, june beetles, etc.), apply 10-14 days after egg-laying activity and/or when turf damage is first noticed. See DuoCide label for complete detail.
Irrigation Required
DuoCide must be watered in immediately after application. Upon contact with water, DuoCide granules will disperse into thousands of microparticles, moving the active ingredients through the turf canopy and into the soil. Wait until watering is complete and the area has dried before allowing pets or people to reenter.

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to kill some insects that live in/ on the ground, will it hurt honey bees, butterflies, or humming birds |
Answer: | It is not recommended that it be washed in a machine. Agitation and rubbing could compromise the durable water-resistant finish. The better cleaning method would be to spot treat with a mild tech soap and blot with a towel. |
Question: | How long is the effectiveness on Chinch Bugs? Is this a one time treatment for them or does it have to be applied again for preventative measures |
Answer: | I have it in red |
Question: | does it work for mosquetoes |
Answer: | No. It’s a great backpack to keep stashed away in case you need one. |
Question: | Will it kill chinch bugs |
Answer: | It might be a bit of overkill, but it would work. I'm using it now for a "failover" connection on my firewall, which uses the ethernet connector to plug into the modem with included ethernet dongle. You just want to make sure you've got a good cell phone signal. This may be different for your provider, but for me (on Google Fi) there is no way to connect _to_ the device, it can only make outbound connections. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how is it applied |
Answer: | I applied by hand using a cup with wholes. But you can use a handheld spreader or a push spreader. What ever you use to put fertilizer down with. |
Question: | when is best time of year to apply |
Answer: | An easy way to remember: Apply in July when the beetles fly. |
Question: | Doesn't mention if/when small pets can be on the lawn. Does it say anywhere on the actual package |
Answer: | Eric's answer is nonsense. The active ingredient in this pesticide is imidacloprid. According to published testing at the Michigan State Extension Service, Cornell University et al, the instructions to apply imidacloprid to a lawn require you to water-in the product with a half inch of water. Once the lawn then dries after the watering it is safe for children and pests. Do your own query, that data is widely published. In fact, to make the point even more clearly, imidacloprid is approved by the EPA to be applied directly onto dogs over 7 weeks old as a flea treatment. Why people like Eric make their ridiculous postings is beyond me. |
Question: | This thing smells pretty evil. I want grubs to die but I feel the worse for my earthworms. Will this kill earthworms in the soil |
Answer: | As I said in my review, in addition to the grubs, it killed the earthworms in my lawn. It killed about a dozen worms per 10-square feet of turf. |

Answer: | I have had different rain gauges before and they do sell the tubes...haven't had to replace this one yet but I'm sure I could find one don't know about the glass ones though |
Question: | I have well water. Treating near the well area will it after the water |
Answer: | Not so far. We take it in during the winter. It is in a partially sheltered corner, but definitely gets some wind. |
Question: | This question is for manufacture or someone that has used accordingly :How many pounds per acre should be used |
Answer: | It just sits on a table or a deck rail would work but it cannot be mounted. We love it! |
Question: | I am new at lawn. I noticed i have grubs, when is this best to use? Thank you |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this in vegetable garden |
Answer: | No strap. Easy to carry by the handle though. |
Question: | will it harm earthworms |
Answer: | I no longer have the box it came but the tank has "20020" in raised plastic written on it. However, in looking at the item listed as 'Chapin 20020" there is a differnce in the wand tip, the spray lever does not lock 'on' (looks like there is a place for piece of plastic to slide for locking), and there may be a few other differences. It may be that Chapin uses the same tank and takes away some bits of plastic to make stripped down models. |
Question: | Can I use with crabgrass preventer |
Answer: | This is NOT the right model for spraying sealers and/or stains. The correct models are 25010, 25012, 25020, and 30600. See the Chapin website. |
Question: | Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you |
Answer: | It will vary based on the product you are using so read the directions carefully for every product you spray. But in general, 1 gallon for 1,000 sq. ft. That said, I just used it on a lawn bowling green which is about 14,000 sq. ft. The pesticide I used said 1 gallon to cover 1,000 sq. ft. That would have been 12 gallons to cover the green, but when I had finished I used half that amount. This may have been because I walked too fast (I walked about the pace I do when I spread fertilizer). So, depending on how fast you walk, how comprehensive you want your coverage to be, and what the pesticide label suggest, I would say 1 gallon covers at least 1,000 sq. ft and at most 2,000 sq. ft. I also recommend using a dye/colorant so you can tell where you have sprayed and how think the coverage is. |
