10 best fire ant killers
Fire ant killers are products designed to effectively eliminate and control fire ant infestations, which can be a nuisance and a health concern. These products fall under the category of pest control and are often used in outdoor areas like lawns, gardens, and patios. Here are some key points related to fire ant killers:
Repellents and Insecticides: Fire ant killers come in various forms, including repellents and insecticides. Repellents are designed to deter fire ants from entering a specific area, while insecticides are meant to kill existing colonies.
Granular and Liquid Formulations: Fire ant killers are available in granular or liquid formulations. Granules are typically spread on the ground, while liquids can be sprayed directly onto ant mounds or infested areas.
Active Ingredients: Fire ant killers contain active ingredients that are toxic to fire ants. Common active ingredients include bifenthrin, permethrin, spinosad, and hydramethylnon, among others.
Application Methods: The application method depends on the product. Some fire ant killers are designed for broadcasting over large areas, while others are applied directly to ant mounds. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results.
Safety Precautions: When using fire ant killers, it's essential to follow safety precautions provided on the product label. This may include wearing protective clothing, keeping children and pets away from treated areas, and avoiding contact with the skin or eyes.
Effectiveness: The effectiveness of fire ant killers can vary depending on the product, the severity of the infestation, and environmental conditions. It may take some time to see results, as the product needs to reach the entire colony.
Residual and Contact Killers: Some fire ant killers are designed to provide residual protection, which means they continue to work for an extended period after application. Others act as contact killers, eliminating ants upon direct contact.
Environmental Impact: Consider the environmental impact of the product you choose. Some fire ant killers are formulated to be less harmful to non-target insects and wildlife, while others may have a broader impact.
Application Timing: Timing can be crucial when applying fire ant killers. It is often recommended to treat fire ant mounds during the spring or early fall when ants are most active and foraging for food.
Storage and Disposal: Properly store fire ant killer products in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. Dispose of empty containers according to local regulations.
Fire ant killers can be an effective tool for managing fire ant infestations and protecting outdoor spaces. However, it's important to choose a product that suits your specific needs and follow the instructions carefully for safe and effective pest control.

Question: | Is this safe to use around plant |
Answer: | They suspend in water |
Question: | Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota |
Answer: | 6 inch.. Baby brushes at 4.5 I think.. Babies for the spring.. Big ones for late summer and fall |
Question: | What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work |
Answer: | They work well on largemouth but you will get more bites on the baby brush hogs for sure ! I like the big ones because I have caught several big fish on them and tournament fishing you have to catch some bigger fish to compete |
Question: | Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size |
Answer: | In my opinion, this bait is best used for flipping into heavy cover, like weeds, grass or lay-down logs, etc. I rig it 'texposed' with a 5/0 extra-wide gap hook and a 1/2 ounce(or heavier, depending on the cover) bullet weight. If this terminology is unfamiliar to you, there are lots of good videos on youtube- it's abit complicated to explain with text, but by actually watching someone do it, it's not hard at all to learn. Use heavy line, at least 20# if you're using mono or fluorocarbon, but I personally use braid, 50# or even 65#, and a stout rod.All that being said, one CAN use the smaller sizes as a drop shot bait. Here is where spinning gear and lighter line, 8# or 10# test, depending on cover/water clarity, can come into play. Again, youtube can show you how to rig a Brush Hog on a drop shot rig. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This product sounds great for fire ants, but, I still need to fight all other insects which are harmful to my grass. Can I use two products at once |
Answer: | I don't know. I know two things about Amdro: (1) It is safe for use around my livestock, and (2) It kills many kinds of ants. I don't know about using it with other chemicals. |
Question: | How much do we need for 100 sq feet |
Answer: | According to the back of the container "For large, infested areas: using a hand-held granular spreader, broadcast AMDRO at 2 to 4 ounces per 5,000 square feet (1 to 2 pounds per acre)." My AMDRO container contains 16 oz. or 1 lb. of product which means it will cover approximately 4,000 to 8,000 sq. feet. |
Question: | has anyone tried Tempo for LRF |
Answer: | I have used tempo for several things. It is a dust that works well in wall voids and places that stay fairly dry as an all purpose insecticide. I wouldn't necessarily use it for ants it might work but baits will do better at spreading to the whole colony. Tempo works great for spiders though. |
Question: | Is this product safe with pets |
Answer: | ASPCA Animal Poison Control, Pet Poison Helpline, and your dog's veterinarian are qualified to answer all POISON concerns. |
Question: | Can i use it inside |
Answer: | I don't know if you can use it inside, but it works great outside. |
Question: | do the ants each this powder and die? = or do the ants walk on it and die |
Answer: | They do both some die almost immediately when dusted. However they kill the mound overnight. I have never had to re-dust a mound. This includes fire ants. I dusted a black widow spider and came back later and it was dead in the web. |
Question: | Anyone know if this also kills carpenter ants (lil black ones) that come into the house? Product sounds awesome |
Answer: | I have used it on all ants and it stops them so fast that I ordered many bottles to have someone sprinkle under my home so they stop coming in from under my home, ugh but it and the spray works fabulous |
Question: | Does it work on indoor roaches |
Answer: | Ramona, Do not use this product inside at all!!! There are plenty of "Gel products" for Roaches. Again do not use this product in your house. |

The Two-Step Method
What is the Two-Step Method?
The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.
- Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
- Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.
Why is this method so effective?
Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant bait take to work?
Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?
After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.
IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?
While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.

Fire Ant Facts
Fire ants have become a major problem in the U.S. in recent years. These deadly ants are prevalent in Southeastern states, Texas, Oklahoma and south-central California. However, in the next few years the range is expected to extend up the Pacific coast through Washington, into Kansas and Missouri, and into New Jersey. Fire ants often attack in swarms, causing painful stings to humans and destroying whole ecosystems by killing other insects, birds, lizards and small mammals. Queens can live up to 6 years and produce millions of eggs. They live in mounds that extend above ground. Another hazard from fire ants is their attraction to electric current. Where they build their mounds they often chew through underground cables. In light of the growing danger from these invasive insects, Spectracide(R) brand has developed a deep-reaching formula that will kill the colony and the queen.

User questions & answers
Question: | does it kill sugar ants |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks |
Answer: | It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit. |
Question: | Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters |
Answer: | I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days. |
Question: | My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution |
Answer: | Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away. |

Why is Bait Better?
Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.
Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.
With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Ant Bait take to work?
The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?
If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.
Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?
For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

User questions & answers
Question: | We have fire ants in our asparagus garden. Is this safe for a garden area |
Answer: | I guess it depends how close to plants you have to use it. It should be watered in so I wouldn't use it close enough to get to plant roots. Don't think no ant killer would be safe too close. |
Question: | Does the product have to be watered into the ant hill for it to work properly |
Answer: | That's what the directions call for. That's the way I have used it, but with less water than Ortho recommends. I see that others have responded NO. There are other products (like Advion) that say not to water in, but this one needs water. Since the ants are always in my lawn, I stab the nest a number of times with a length of rebar before sprinkling the product on and then pouring on a half-gallon of water. The rebar holes help it to penetrate deeply into the nest...but it really makes the ants mad! So a little discretion is advisable; but it works very well. |
Question: | I have seen Ortho recommend the use of this product along with the Ortho Orthene product in a 2 step method. Does anyone have experience with this or |
Answer: | I never used it in a two step method, maybe I should have. The problem I had is that you may kill a bunch from one nest but the few that live will only start again in a new spot, so the more you kill the better the chance you won't be dealing with them coming back. |
Question: | Only kill fire ants? how about other ants |
Answer: | I recommend you put your headphones on and turn on Metallica's Kill Em All while using this stuff, because it does not discriminate. |

This powerful TERRO spray can reach up to 15 feet away, letting you remain at a comfortable distance while still killing bugs. The spray kills most bugs directly on contact.
