12 best pole pruners

Pole pruners are outdoor power tools used for trimming and pruning trees, branches, and shrubs that are out of reach from ground level. They are a specialized type of equipment commonly used by gardeners, arborists, and homeowners to maintain the health and appearance of trees and other vegetation. Here's what you need to know about pole pruners:

  1. Design: Pole pruners consist of a long pole or handle with a cutting mechanism at the end. The cutting mechanism can vary, but it typically includes a saw blade, pruning shears, or a combination of both. Some pole pruners are manually operated, while others are powered by electricity or gas.

  2. Types:

    • Manual Pole Pruners: These require physical effort to operate and are suitable for lighter pruning tasks. They are often used for small branches and can be more affordable than powered options.
    • Electric Pole Pruners: Electric models are powered by electricity and are relatively lightweight and easy to use. They are suitable for moderate pruning jobs and are quieter than gas-powered models.
    • Gas-Powered Pole Pruners: Gas-powered pole pruners are more powerful and suitable for heavy-duty pruning tasks. They are often used by professionals and can reach greater heights. However, they are noisier and require more maintenance.
  3. Telescopic Poles: Many modern pole pruners come with telescopic poles that can be extended to reach higher branches and retracted for easy storage and transportation. This feature enhances their versatility.

  4. Cutting Mechanisms:

    • Pruning Shears: Some pole pruners use a bypass or anvil-style pruning shear mechanism to make clean cuts on smaller branches.
    • Saw Blades: For thicker branches and tree limbs, pole pruners often feature saw blades with sharp teeth designed to cut through wood efficiently.
  5. Safety Features: Safety is paramount when using pole pruners. Most models include safety features such as blade guards, handguards, and safety straps to prevent accidents and injuries during operation.

  6. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep your pole pruner in good working condition. This includes sharpening or replacing blades, checking for loose parts, and cleaning the tool after use.

  7. Usage Tips:

    • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe and proper use.
    • Wear appropriate protective gear, including safety glasses, a helmet, and gloves.
    • Be cautious when operating near power lines, and never use a pole pruner on a ladder.
    • Assess the health of the tree or branch you're pruning to ensure it's safe to cut.
  8. Benefits: Pole pruners allow you to trim and shape trees and shrubs without the need for a ladder, reducing the risk of accidents. They also enable you to reach high branches that would otherwise be challenging to access.

In summary, pole pruners are valuable outdoor power tools for maintaining trees and vegetation, offering a safe and efficient way to prune branches at varying heights. The choice of manual or powered models depends on the scope and scale of your pruning tasks, as well as your personal preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: there are 2 different holes to choose from to screw on the head (either farther/closer to the edge). Which is more effective/what is the difference
Answer: The two holes allows you to change the angle of the saw with respect to the pole. It make a difference on the angle you are sawing from and accessiblity to diffeerent limbs. Most of the stuff I saw is no more tha about 15 feet from the ground so I've set mine on the hole closest the the tooth edge of the saw. For a higher limb or to gain better access to a limb that might be partiallym block I would move the saw to less of angle to the pole. It makes a difference on the leverage you can put on the saw and the space you have to manipulate the saw. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two settings but sometimes a little difference is all you need
Question: Do you just pull and hold the rope or is there some kind of motion you need to do. I see no instructions
Answer: The rope activates the cutting blade. For small limbs you can hold the shaft in the one hand and pull with the other until the limb is cut, but for the biggest limb that can fit into cutter you will need the brace the end of the shaft on the ground or against you. Blade is spring loaded and resets itself unless a piece of bark wedges between the blade and the guard
Question: is the rope detachable from the device for easy opersation when using only the saw part
Answer: The rope is easy to detach; however, there is no "only the saw part". I think what you're asking is does the lever, chain and compound pull mechanism interfere with sawing-- It can and does. It also interferes with pruning but the increased force for "pruning" is worth it. I would not want to remove the mechanism from pole, in fact the saw blade attaches to the mechanism. With the increased force the need for the saw is reduced but I kept the pole and saw from my old worn out pruner for when I need to use a pole saw. Overall I'm quite happy with this TP6870 , Corona doesn't make junk.
Question: Is a replacement part available for the Plastic Clamping Nut? It WILL crack (I have 3 of these) soon after you have had too long to return it
Answer: Terrible engineering is it not? Just drill a small hole 3/32 works good about 2 inches below the nut and insert a bolt. for extending the saw pull it out 3 feet or so and drill another hole and then it will lock securely there as well. another nice thing to do is go to the dollar store and get some small carabineer key chain things and use them to secure the cord that works the lopper , then you can detach is while sawing. do these 2 things and you have a great t tool.

Fiskars 7.9-12 Foot Extendable Tree Pruning Stik Pruner (92406935K)

Fiskars

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Fiskars Pruning Stik Tree Pruner makes it easy to cut high or low with a level of control traditional pruners with exterior ropes can’t match. A long, lightweight pole lets you cut high branches without the hassles and dangers of using a ladder, make low cuts without sore knees from kneeling or back strain from bending and easily reach into dense, prickly shrubs or tight spots. For the reach you need to cut your highest branches, the pole extends all the way to 12 foot and locks securely. The rope-free design means you can use both hands to maximize your power and accuracy, and an easy-to-grip sliding handle makes the pruning action smooth and simple. An actuating ball at the end of the pole lets you reach even farther and still prune with precision, an included 15 inch saw blade makes it easy to take down thicker branches, and the cutting head rotates up to 230 degrees to let you prune and saw at tough angles. The fully hardened, precision-ground blade stays sharp, and a low-friction, rust-resistant coating makes every cut easier.

  • Ideal for pruning high branches and reaching tight spaces
  • Rope-free design gives you two-handed control and power
  • Power-Stroke chain-driven gearing provides maximum cutting power
  • Fully hardened steel pruning blade with non-stick coating stays sharp and cuts up to a 1¼" diameter smoothly
  • Lifetime warranty

User questions & answers

Question: What is the wgt of the unit
Answer: 3.8 lb. without the saw. The saw add 0.55 lb.
Question: How does one operate the shears part of the tool? On other products I see a squeeze handle at the base of the pole. Don't see one here
Answer: The orange handle on the shaft slides up and down to work the shears. When the pole saw is fully expanded and the orange handle is out of reach, there is real strong nylonish-type cable attached to handle t pull for easy operation of the shears. I find that this gives me more flexibility in my posture which is important when using for extended periods of time. This particular Fiskars tool is awesome = in my opinion the best "medium duty" pole pruner, by far for these reasons. (1) It's FAR LIGHTER than other pole pruners; if you are going to be using a pole saw for more than 15-30 minutes at a time, you're gonna love this model (2) Very sharp, and like all Fiskars tools, the blade is made from quality metal that maintains a nice sharp edge. (3) THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE - there is no big "knobby thing or pulley set up on the end; this makes it lighter to use but also allows you to get into tighter spaces for finer detailing. (4) The telescoping mechanism works efficiently and very easily (5) One can position the angle of the shears for cleaner, better quality cuts.. I'm a professional botanist, gardening columnist and gardening instructor, and I highly recommend this pole pruner.
Question: Where can I get a replacement strap for my Fiskars 9240 telescoping pruning stick
Answer: I sent them a request for a replacement strap for my 9240 because it frayed at the end entering the pole when fully extended. I also sent a picture. To my surprise they sent me a new one. Not just the strap but a whole new pruner. Now that’s customer service and lifetime warranty at its best. Thanks Fiaksrs
Question: What is the largest sized branch which can be cut with the pruning shear
Answer: The pruner blades measure about 1-1/8" apart so it should do up to 1" as stated in the specs. I've cut about 3/4" branches with no issues.

User questions & answers

Question: I am sorry, but my question is very basic (never used any sort of pruner before). In what position the blade should be and how to adjust it right
Answer: I found keeping the blade straight and standing back from the tree (instead of right underneath) best for cutting. You pull the blade towards you to cut, lift the blade place it on the branch and pull towards you lift blade and place it into the cut and repeat till cut off.
Question: is the woodzig an attachment or a separate tool used to cut larger branches
Answer: The woodzig is the long blade used to cut/saw the branches. Everything you need comes in the package. There are no other attachments needed.
Question: I have a juniper tree that needs pruning. The branches are about 3" - 4" in diameter. Will the Woodzig saw deal with these branches
Answer: I have cut branches that thick, but it was difficult--especially if you have to reach a long distance. Having said that, understand that I am 74 years old. The 9301 can do the job.
Question: What is the length of this pruner when it is NOT extended? I'm wondering for storage purposes
Answer: Some where over 6 ft with blade folded down (TIP: when you receive pruner, cut two pieces of cardboard from the box you receive it in to make a slip cover for the blade while on pole.. just heavy tape three sides. and then slide blade between the card board at open end.. this protects the blade and you while not in use..)

Answer: Make sure you get the blade with the double edge on it. Take your old blade with you, or compare the online pictures to be sure the holes line up. There are two kinds of blades and my husband will only use the one with double edges.
Question: how much does it weigh
Answer: Thanks for the question - it weighs approximately 4 pounds.

Question: Length of rope
Answer: the rope is long enough to use with 2 poles & have some left over. not sure about 3 cause I don't hav a 3rd pole, but you could always lengthen it. the pruner itself is great & a professional tool. 100 times better then the ones at home depot or lowes.
Question: Type of pole needed? My present head clamped onto my fiberglass pole, will this one also clamp on to the pole
Answer: K. Drake - for optimal performance, you will want to use any of the Jameson Fiberglass Base or Extension Poles to use with any Jameson Fiberglass Pole attachment; especially, the JA-34DP-PKG big Mouth Side Cut Double Pully Tree Pruner Kit. Jameson pole models can be used together in a variety of combinations - all have the same ferrules. For highest performance and safety, Jameson recommends using a base pole when using one pole or starting with a base pole when working with multiple poles. User questions & answers

Question: Does this saw have a lopper
Answer: I am sorry, this does not have a lopper. Have a good day!
Question: What are the diameter of the polls
Answer: I measured pole outside OD-1.25 in.
Question: yes just purchased and need to know how to attach the saw blade coreectly, they gave no manuel or instructions at alll
Answer: I think it’s best to mount the blade with the saw edge curving away from the hook. There are three small guide holes. I prefer the center one. When you attach the blade, place the blade on first, then the lock washer against the blade and the wing nut last.
Question: I did not see the saw blade included with the pole. Will it be sent in a separate package
Answer: The blade was included in the same box with the poles when I received mine.

User questions & answers

Question: does this expand/collapse in size or is it a fixed height
Answer: The trimmer is a fixed length. There is sleeve in the middle that will actuate the trimmer and a pull ring on the end that will also actuate the trimmer. I use it for trimming plants in my pond and have found it very handy.
Question: What diameter branch can this cut through
Answer: They claim up to 1/2 inch, but 3/8 inch is limit for harder woods. 3/8 green wood is no problem. Love this tool. Can trip most of my trees without ladder.
Question: I cannot figure out how this works. Do you need to use two hands to operate it
Answer: You need two hands- the central handle actuates the blades (you slide it toward the bottom), while your second hand would hold the bottom; or you would put both hands at the bottom- one on the handle wrapped around and the other pulling the ring at the bottom. Both ways use tension to operate an internal block and tackle that closes the jaws.It works really well, as long as you don't cut branches over about 2" thick. The internal block and tackle is plastic and can fracture.
Question: Is this pruner telescopic, what is the total reach (length
Answer: Not telescopic 60 inch overall.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it take to charge the battery ? How long does the battery last
Answer: Definitely yes! That's why I bought it. In two or three years, the palm trees will probably be too high for it to reach the branches and I'll have to hire someone to trim them, but in the meantime, I'll save probably $200-$300 in costs, and I can still sell this on Craig's List for $50 or so. It's a Win-Win situation.
Question: chain stops moving as soon as it touches the surface of the tree & doesn't cut. chain is not too tight and isn't backwards. any ideas why
Answer: Completely collapsed the entire unit is 68.5 inches in length and cannot be made shorter than this length.
Question: I cut 7 to 8 branches, then the chain came off
Answer: 107 inches one inch shy of 9 ft. Added to the average persons height one should be able to cut a branch 15 feet from the ground. Highly recommended good product I paidc $75.99
Question: Can i purchase additional extensions
Answer: The 7 lbs. referenced in the instruction manual is accurate and is ready to use including installed chain. Fully extended at max height will feel like twice as much unless you extend your left hand grip on the shaft as far up to the cutting head as you can when raising or lowering the tool. This gives you better leverage. Also retract the shaft when cutting low branches or when trimming limbs.
