11 best pole chain saws
Pole chain saws are outdoor power tools designed for trimming and pruning tree branches and shrubs that are otherwise out of reach for traditional chainsaws or hand tools. They are particularly useful for landscaping, tree maintenance, and other outdoor tasks. Here's what you should know about pole chain saws:
Design: A pole chain saw consists of a chainsaw head attached to a long pole. The pole can vary in length, allowing you to reach branches at different heights without needing a ladder.
Power Source: These saws can be powered by electricity (corded), battery (cordless), or gasoline (gas-powered). Corded and cordless models are suitable for lighter tasks, while gas-powered ones offer more power for heavier-duty cutting.
Reach: The primary advantage of a pole chain saw is its extended reach. Some models can reach up to 15 feet or more, depending on the pole's length and the user's height. This allows for safe and efficient pruning of tall branches.
Safety: Safety features are essential in pole chain saws. They typically include chain brakes that stop the chain's rotation when released, handguards to protect your hand from debris, and non-slip grips for better control.
Chain and Bar: The chain and bar of a pole chain saw are replaceable parts and should be periodically maintained and sharpened for optimal cutting performance.
Automatic Oiling: Many models feature automatic chain oiling systems to ensure smooth cutting and reduce friction between the chain and the bar.
Telescoping Poles: Some pole chain saws come with telescoping poles, allowing for easy adjustment of the length to reach branches at various heights. Telescopic poles are convenient for storage and transport.
Cutting Capacity: The maximum diameter of branches a pole chain saw can cut depends on the saw's power and chain length. It's important to choose a model that suits your specific cutting needs.
Weight: Consider the weight of the pole chain saw, especially for extended use. Lightweight models are easier to handle for longer periods.
Noise and Emissions: Gas-powered pole chain saws tend to be noisier and emit exhaust fumes compared to electric or battery-powered models. Electric and battery-powered options are more environmentally friendly.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of your pole chain saw. This includes cleaning, chain sharpening, and checking for any loose bolts or parts.
Safety Gear: When using a pole chain saw, it's essential to wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, and sturdy clothing.
Pole chain saws are valuable tools for homeowners and professionals who need to maintain trees and shrubs on their property. They offer a safer and more convenient way to prune and trim branches at various heights. When choosing a pole chain saw, consider factors like reach, power source, and safety features to ensure it meets your specific needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long does it take to charge the battery ? How long does the battery last |
Answer: | Definitely yes! That's why I bought it. In two or three years, the palm trees will probably be too high for it to reach the branches and I'll have to hire someone to trim them, but in the meantime, I'll save probably $200-$300 in costs, and I can still sell this on Craig's List for $50 or so. It's a Win-Win situation. |
Question: | chain stops moving as soon as it touches the surface of the tree & doesn't cut. chain is not too tight and isn't backwards. any ideas why |
Answer: | Completely collapsed the entire unit is 68.5 inches in length and cannot be made shorter than this length. |
Question: | I cut 7 to 8 branches, then the chain came off |
Answer: | 107 inches one inch shy of 9 ft. Added to the average persons height one should be able to cut a branch 15 feet from the ground. Highly recommended good product I paidc $75.99 |
Question: | Can i purchase additional extensions |
Answer: | The 7 lbs. referenced in the instruction manual is accurate and is ready to use including installed chain. Fully extended at max height will feel like twice as much unless you extend your left hand grip on the shaft as far up to the cutting head as you can when raising or lowering the tool. This gives you better leverage. Also retract the shaft when cutting low branches or when trimming limbs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the best way to store this saw when not in use |
Answer: | I stored it vertically for the first season with the head on top. It leaked oil down the handle. I then put two bicycle hanging hooks on the ceiling of my garden shed and now hang it horizontally. Harder to get down, but it is never oily, and that's worth the trouble of getting something to stand on to reach it. |
Question: | Is the overall shaft length on the 80V 10 inch longer than the 40V 8 inch cordless pole saw |
Answer: | Hello Jopojo, The length is about a foot different from end to end. The G-Max 40v pole saw, height of pole saw, from the base to the bar tip the unit is 97” long (8’ 1”) with the middle extension. The GreenWorks Pro pole saw is 9’1’’ full length (from handle base to bar tip). |
Question: | What is the max reach/extension on this |
Answer: | Hello Glen,The pole saw is 9’1’’ at full length (from handle base to bar tip). |
Question: | I already have several 40 V batteries. Will this work with them |
Answer: | Hello there, No, it will not work in the 40v platform. Each voltage platform has its own set of interchangeable tools and batteries. They are not interchangeable across different voltage platforms. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this model compatible with the Dewalt hedge trimmer head |
Answer: | I don't know. I just bought a new chain once the old one got dull. $15 |
Question: | Does this particular model dcps620b cone with a sheath cover? i.e. a chain/bar cover |
Answer: | No, it doesn't come with oil. Ignore the guy who says it does and the ambiguous answer dude. I had to run to our local hardware store to buy it the last minute. |
Question: | how much power does this unit have? Can it cut thru thick branches |
Answer: | Move out of California, Hell in Florida you can practically get this thing with a shotgun strapped to it shipped right to your door. Ha ha just kidding. Really, I know it's getting impossible to get gas powered lawn equipment in CA but this should be just what the tree huggers want you to use... oh wait, I just answered the question. Stop trying to hurt the trees. |
Question: | Is the combined length of pole and saw actually |
Answer: | We used this item for a couple of projects after which the chain was loose. Falling off the bar. The instructions are very unclear and there is no clear way to adjust the position of the bar to tighten the chain. The adjustment knob will not do it as I tightened it as much as I could. After playing around with it I managed to tightened the chain but do not think it will last. This problem is a design flaw with this item. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can a Center extension piece be ordered? I snapped the one that came with my saw |
Answer: | I can't tell you for sure if it's compatible but I do have the dewalt drill the saw and the impact driver and the batteries are interchangeable |
Question: | Does this include a battery and charger |
Answer: | It does not. The part number for the sheath cover is N656402. |
Question: | Is the pole length adjustable? What is the minimum length |
Answer: | Make first cut 6" (152 mm) from tree trunk on underside of limb. Use top of guide bar to make this cut. Cut 1/3 through diameter of limb. Then make the finish cut from the top. If you try to cut off thick branches from the bottom, the branch may close in and pinch the saw chain in the cut. If you try to cut off thick branches from the top, without a shallow undercut, the branch may splinter. Do not force pole saw. The motor will overload and can burn out. |
Question: | Can the saw be operated alone, like the Worx saw, the pole can be taken out, so the saw can be used as a "chain saw |
Answer: | It seems to be the pole length is 10 ft, plus your reach |

User questions & answers
Question: | I would like to know if this saw can work with 220v |
Answer: | I would say my battery's charge in 2 to 6 hours depending on how low you run them. a battery will make any where from 20 to 40 cuts depending on what your cutting how hard the wood. |
Question: | What size screw is the tension screw |
Answer: | Not sure...will have to see how I can dampen mine to replicate this...however, while cutting way high in the tree on hard oak...mine would stop, I would pull it up, then start it and resume cutting, but after these sudden stops I changed batteries...mine tends to cut off when battery life is low...be sure you start with full charge. Otherwise I will have to google this problem for other ideas. I will clean and sharpen the unit with a battery so I can move the chain while spraying with DW40...or any bike chain lube.... |
Question: | Is the locking mechanism in pole saw mode made of plastic? Is it secure |
Answer: | It is very common for a new chain to 'stretch' a bit more than during typical use. However, all chains will loosen up with use. Mine fell off 3 times the first day (30-40 branches, some large), until I got the feel of how tight it should be and it has been great since. Don't forget to oil it too. |
Question: | Does it include both saws |
Answer: | The correct extension part for this device is 90556251, $25.33 from ereplacementparts. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this cut high, flimsy branches near top of tree? Or would the branches just flop around |
Answer: | I would say that the smaller and weaker the branches are, the less efficient this pole saw is. However I have used it to cut and prune back a mugo pine which has pretty flimsy branches which are short, also willow branches |
Question: | Do you find yourself using the adjustable head feature |
Answer: | I don't use the Sun Joe, but my husband does. Yes he has used the adjustable head. |
Question: | does anyone have an opinion on buying the saw that angles or is straight |
Answer: | The adjustable angle is definitely a good feature. Greatly helps at certain heights/angles. This is a very good saw. Definitely recommend |
Question: | What size generator would be needed for this |
Answer: | Sun Joe SWJ802E motor is rated at 6.5 Amps at 120 volt, thus running requirement is 780 watts (The conversion of Amps to Watts at fixed voltage is governed by the equation Watts = Amps x Volts). 780 watts would be running requirements, the starting requirement would be 20% above running requirement or 936 watts. Any generator capable of supplying 936 watts or above @ 120 volts should be adequate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it cut palm tree branches |
Answer: | New extensions are available directly from DeWalt as a replacement part. |
Question: | can you make the pole shorter |
Answer: | Yes it came with a charger and 4ah battery. You will just need to buy some chainsaw oil |
Question: | Other advertising I have seen states it is 15' from end to end (complete product). Yet the best your answers are stating is 9'? So which is it |
Answer: | The saw came in three sections having a total length of of about 120 inches. The center section of 40 inches is removable giving a a minimum length of about 80 inches. |
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | There are only two lengths - with all three pieces which makes it 9 foot long, or with just the handle/battery section and the saw head at 6 foot long. I've used it on a few close to the ground branches, but it's not as easy to wield as a regular small chain saw. While you can reach some higher branches, you don't want to be cutting directly above your head. |

Product description
The Worx 10” – 20V Pole Saw takes the compact and lightweight standard Worx 20V Chainsaw and attaches a pole for up to 12 feet of reach so you can trim away problematic tree limbs. It’s the perfect marriage of our slim 6.2 lbschainsaw (WG322.9) and our pole attachment so you can leave the ladder in the garage and have your feet safely on the ground when you work up in the air. Trust us, everyone in your family will be thankful for this safer method of trimming away tree limbs. Modern features make this pole saw easy to operate. The handle at the bottom of the pole features an on/off switch, so you don’t have to constantly raise and lower the chainsaw just to turn it on and off. The battery attaches at the base of the pole, when connected, for easy switch out when you need to recharge. And it snaps into the saw itself when you’re using it independently. Oh, did we forget to mention that this 2-in-1 works on the ground just as well as it does in the air? The pole comes off easily without the need for any tools, and you get a fully functional chainsaw to chop up fallen branches and the like on the ground. The auto-tension and auto-lubrication systems keep the tool and the chain in peak condition every time you use it. And the 20V 2.0Ah battery and charger that come with this pole saw can be used to operate every tool on the Worx Power Share platform, saving you money in the long run.
- 12’ EXTRA REACH: It takes just a few minutes and no tools to attach the pole. And with a reach of up to 12’ and only 10 pounds, you’ll be able to get to branches and limbs before they become a problem
- FAST, CLEAN CUTS: This cordless 20V PowerShare chain saw is as fast and powerful as anything in its class. And with no gas, and no cord, there’s much less muss and fuss
- DO IT ALL WITH THE SAME BATTERY: Worx Power Share is compatible with all Worx 20v and 40v tools, outdoor power and lifestyle products
- AUTO-CHAIN TENSION: The automatic, tool-free chain tension system ensures you’ll always have the correct tension for the job at hand
- AUTO-CHAIN LUBRICATION: The automatic chain lubrication system not only makes for smoother, more efficient cuts, but it extends the life of the tool. And the oil level indicator lets you know exactly where you stand
- COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT: The saw itself weighs only 10 pounds You’ll work longer, with less strain on your hands, arms, back, and legs
- PLENTY OF JUICE: These are the same batteries we use on our Jawsaw and in our Lawnmowers. They’re powerful enough for those, and powerful enough for a chain saw

Product features
Lightweight: Just Over 10 lbs
It’s easy to keep the polesaw up high for as long as you need to get the job done. And its compact design makes it simple to maneuver around the branches that you want to stay up there.
Auto-Tension
A well-running saw is safer to use. Auto-tension makes the chain operate at peak performance and protects against over-tightening. Plus, you don’t need to use any tools to make adjustments.
10-Foot Reach
Leave the ladder in the garage for safer branch trimming. With your feet firmly on the ground you can take care of branches up high before they become a problem.
Ergonomic Grip
With a vibration-absorbing handle, this chainsaw is as comfortable to use as you could expect a chainsaw to be. It’s also well-balanced, keeping you firmly in control.
Auto-Lubrication System
The chain maintains perfect lubrication, which means it’ll spin smoothly around the bar and maintain its 12.5 ft/s chain speed, so you get fast, clean cuts every time you use it. And you’ll know when it’s time for a refill with the oil-level indicator window.
Control the Saw From the Pole
The handle of the pole has an on/off trigger, so you can stop and start the chainsaw without having to bring it down each time you want to do so. It saves time, battery life, and it’s safer.
