13 best pond algaecides

Pond algaecides are chemicals or treatments used in water gardens, ponds, and outdoor water features to control and prevent the growth of algae. Algae can be a common problem in these aquatic environments, as it thrives in the presence of sunlight and nutrients, such as phosphates and nitrates. Excessive algae growth can lead to murky water, foul odors, and potentially harm aquatic life. Pond algaecides are designed to address these issues by reducing or eliminating algae growth.

Here are some key points about pond algaecides:

  1. Types of Pond Algaecides: There are different types of pond algaecides available, including chemical algaecides and biological treatments. Chemical algaecides typically contain compounds that target and kill algae directly, while biological treatments introduce beneficial microorganisms that compete with algae for nutrients.

  2. Application: Pond algaecides are usually applied directly to the water. The method of application can vary, but it often involves diluting the algaecide in a bucket of pond water and then evenly distributing it across the pond's surface.

  3. Algae Control: Algaecides work by disrupting the photosynthesis process of algae, which is necessary for their growth. This can lead to the death and breakdown of existing algae cells.

  4. Preventative vs. Curative: Pond algaecides can be used preventatively to keep algae growth in check or curatively to address existing algae problems. Preventative treatments are typically applied periodically during the growing season, while curative treatments are used when an algae outbreak occurs.

  5. Environmental Considerations: It's important to use pond algaecides carefully and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some algaecides may have an impact on other aquatic life, so their use should be targeted and not excessive. Additionally, some products are labeled as "fish-safe" to ensure they won't harm fish or other aquatic organisms.

  6. Water Testing: Regular water testing can help determine the underlying causes of algae growth, such as imbalances in water chemistry. Addressing these issues can reduce the need for algaecides.

  7. Maintenance: Algae control is often an ongoing process, and maintenance is essential to keep algae at bay. This may involve regular cleaning, removal of debris, and proper filtration to prevent nutrient buildup.

  8. Regulations: Depending on your location, there may be regulations regarding the use of algaecides in natural water bodies, so it's important to check local guidelines before applying them.

Pond algaecides can be a useful tool in maintaining the clarity and health of your water garden or pond. However, it's important to use them judiciously and in conjunction with other pond maintenance practices to create a balanced and thriving aquatic ecosystem.

User questions & answers

Question: What pond size will it treat
Answer: I have a water-filled quarry that's 200' x 100' x 100' deep and I only have to treat it with one bottle because the top of the water is where the algae and other organisms grow. In my situation, my estimations are for treating the top 4-feet of water, but as the liquid settles into the deeper water, it is also effective. I'm a chemical engineer, so I know hat the liquid only settles in the warm water on the top layer (thermocline). It works immediately to kill algae, so dramatically fast that everyone there when I first applied it was awed.
Question: This was recommended by a local university ag agent for my small 50 gal. pond but the online info says not to use in small ponds. Any advice
Answer: Thanks for your question. Draining the pond and removing the string algae will be a sure fire way to make sure you get rid of everything. However that defeats the purpose of using an algaecide. Greenclean starts killing algae on contact and can be mixed with your pond water. If you want more help you can call Pond & Garden Depot toll free at 1-866-305-5459.Cody H.Customer Service
Question: Is it safe to use in a 800 gallon cattle tank? If so, how is it applied
Answer: This is not a mix with water product its for lightly sprinkled over the affected area.
Question: How much liquid would I need for a large pond about 50 foot diameter
Answer: If you are referring to green water then this would not be your most effective treatment. If you are referring to huge chunks of floating string algae then this would destroy them very quickly once you sprinkle it on. However you should be aware that the dead algae mess will most likely continue to float for quite a while. Also, any time you use an algae killing product you definitely want to add a beneficial bacteria treatment. Otherwise the dead algae are not consumed and they become the food source for the next generation of algae. Graystone Industries 706-865-0220

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this on a galvanized stock tank pond
Answer: I have had birds drink out of my pond after I put in the Aglaecide and did not see any harmful effects. But use as directed. I put in two doses too close together and several of my fish died.
Question: On average how often do you use this product
Answer: I have a 1/4 acre pond and I can get 5 treatments out of one gallon. Keep in mind, all I use it for is algie growth on the edges of the pond. Now for the good news, I have almost stop using it since started using pond dye. That stop the algie almost 100 percent if I make the pond very dark with the dye. Also, I found cirtine granuals to be more effective than the liquid. But, give the dye a thought and do some research on it. You may find it a better choice, I did. Saves a tone of $$ as well.
Question: I have Japanese Trapdoor snail. Can I use this product
Answer: I couldn't say what the risks are in using this Cutrine in small ponds. IF I still had my 100 gal. pond I would probably try a very weak solution of it. Be sure of the concentration shown on the label. Some jugs are a 9% copper and some are a 27% copper solution. That would make a big factor in your dilution rate. If it were me I would mix about 2 or 3 tablespoons into a gallon of water then add it to my pond then check for results in a few days. I would want plenty of circulation in that pond, too. It still may require scraping the algae from the sides.
Question: Will Algaecide harm birds
Answer: Yes, it's safe to drink, and it can be applied to water the water in the tank, but it has to be mixed with it first to disperse it before the cattle can ingest it. For questions like this one, call their tech support number. This product is used in water for fish farms because it does no harm. I've been using it since 1995 in my water-filled quarry where people swim and fish, and it works dramatically well.

Question: The water in my outdoor fountain starts to give off a foul smell after a while. Will eradicating the algae and slime remove the odor as well? Thanks
Answer: If the smell is caused by the algae and slime, this product should also eliminate it. I add the product weekly and have not had a problem with algae (or odor!)
Question: Can this be used on a small tabletop indoor fountain? And is it necessary to use bleach alongside this product
Answer: Hello,Yes, you can use it in a tabletop fountain indoors. You do not need to use bleach when using this product.Thank you.
Question: can it be used in a cement bird bath? Will it keep water an cement from getting green an slimy
Answer: Yes it will. It does a great job. I will be getting more. Plus you don't need to put much in. Only a few drops. Depending on the size of the fountain
Question: Is this product for cats drinking out of fountain
Answer: Yes it is. I was looking for a chemical that would be safe for a fountain that cats and birds occasionally drink from, and this does fit that bill. I see in this thread that there is quite some confusion about this topic, because the label says that it is a pesticide and lists warnings for human consumption while at the same time saying it is safe for pets and birds (but not most fish). In fact both are true - it is all about the quantities. Most of the things we consume are dangerous when consumed in pure form or large amounts. Large amounts of table salt are harmful, just like large amounts of chlorine which is typically added to our drinking water. In fact, even large amounts of completely purified and de-ionised water will kill you. That obviously does not mean that you should not drink water or eat anything with salt in it - it just means that an excess of anything can be bad. The active chemical in this algaecide is polyquat. Polyquat has been extensively studied and starts to show toxicity in various animals at ingested amounts of 0.5g-1g per kg body weight per day over an extended period of time. This product contains 30% polyquat, so for a child that weighs 20 pounds drinking in the order of a tablespoon per day directly out of the bottle would be likely to cause problems. This is why there is a warning on the label: if anyone would ingest a large amount directly from the bottle this could definitely be harmful. However if you use the product as directed, you actually add only one drop of the product per gallon of water. Even a tiny kitten that weighs 2 pounds would have to drink 30 gallons a day from that fountain to ingest enough of the chemical to get into the range of adverse effects. Obviously that is not very likely. It is possible that some subtle effects are not detected in studies, so it is typically recommended to stay well below the dose that would cause any issues, but as a kitten is unlikely to drink more than a cup it stays about 500x under the exposure limits. Finally: some chemicals can accumulate in the body and thereby long-term exposure to small quantities can still become dangerous over time. Retention of polyquat in the body is minimal, so this is not a real concern for this product. I hope that clarifies some of the confusion. source: https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/122130603#section=Top

User questions & answers

Question: Will this effect trout or bass
Answer: I treat my 100' x 200' x 4' deep quarry with 1 bottle of liquid Cutrine Plus that diluted, and I use a 1 gallon juicer to throw the mixture around initially, then it disperses itself throughout the whole quarry. I've seen algae react immediately on impact when I threw it in. I throw it in on one side of the quarry only and it spreads itself. The change is so dramatic that I've had swimmers over the decades willing to buy more for the quarry just to see the crystal-clear water. In 1994, I had a problem with red algae occurring, and didn't know how to treat it. I had the professor from Lehigh Univrsity and Muhlenberg College look at it and analysis it, but she had no solution to get rid of it. In my conversation with a man about selling me a tank with sand as a filter, he asked me why I didn't just use this product. I hadn't heard of it before, but he was correct. I called their tech department and followed through from there, and I've never been sorry. Cutrine Plus is tremendously effective and safe.
Question: Can cutrine plus liquid be used in combination with nt max microbial digester to kill algae and then have the microbes clean up
Answer: Kills algae .....I would say not safe for plants .....
Question: Do u treat the entire pond or just were the algae is
Answer: That's a great question ! There are no ingredients listed on the bottle. I am going to ask the seller myself.
Question: Approximately how much to treat a 50' x 100' pond & how often? 1 to 4 1/2 feet deep
Answer: My bird bath isn't 5 gallons either! It's only 1/4 of a gallon, so I put in about 10-12 drops. That's the best math I could come up with!

User questions & answers

Question: is it safe for fish
Answer: This product is definitely safe for birds. I have been using it for about ten years to clean my pondless waterfall. It gets rid of the algae (it takes about a half day after turning back on my waterfall for the algae to dissolve) and it has not affected the many birds who drink from the waterfall.
Question: Item weight 1 lb., Shipping weight 7.9 lbs. how much actual product? I cannot tell what I am buying
Answer: Hello, this product contains the same active ingredient as Algae-fix but at a 6% (vs 5% for Algae-fix). The label name is:(Active Ingredient): 6% Polyoxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylenedichloride. Thanks!Steve B. - Customer Service - 1-866-305-5459 - M-.Sat, 9-5 PM EST
Question: Does it expire? I'm debating getting the larger size
Answer: Works in a day or 2. The algae doesn’t immediately disappear. It kills the algae, you will see it turn a less green color and then it gradually decomposes over time.
Question: Is it safe for birds
Answer: Depends upon the lot #. Keep the product in a sealed container and it will be good for many years to come.

User questions & answers

Question: I have three crane pumps in my fountain. Is this product safe for the pumps? They are a mix of metals. Brass, stainless etc
Answer: Has not affected my natural rock & concrete waterfall. No effect on two in-ground black vinyl koi ponds either. Unsure of painted surfaces ... depends on the paint & how applied.
Question: Does this product stain cement
Answer: Yes. It's wonderful. I no longer remember it's instructions which I used to follow explicitly when we first got the pond. Then I found the pond care people simply sprinkling it everywhere without measureing and said it was perfectly safe. We have streams which get string algae. I turn off the water to them, sprinkle it all evenly with Ecoblast, let it sit for at least 30-45 minutes and turn them back on. If you aren't treating streams then you would turn off the skimmer so the water is still and then sprinkle the Ecoblast. It sinks to the bottom and debris floats to the top. After 30 minutes then turn the skimmer back on. Just be prepared to clean the skimmer in short order :)
Question: What kind of non chlorine product should be used to eliminate existing algae growth before using the fountec as a maintenance product
Answer: Hello, We apologize for the frequently confusing amazon listings. Most of the individual dealers listing this product have little control over what the ad actually says, but i can assure you that from Practical Garden Ponds this will be 7 pounds of product if you choose the 7 lb option of the three optional sizes.
Question: Does this eat away the finish/paints of a poly-resin fountain
Answer: Thanks for your question. There is a printed expiration date on this product and based on the answers to this question I'm guessing some sellers may try to sell product past that date. Our Ecoblast's printed expiration date isn't until May of 2020. It is worth noting that if kept dry this product will maintain effectiveness even past the printed expiration date. User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used in a galvanized metal fountain
Answer: Don’t know, but my water has been crystal clear.
Question: Is this OK for birds in a birdbath
Answer: Safe
Question: Will this help with lime build up from city tap water
Answer: It absolutely does not stain cement. My fountain is cement. When you first put FounTec into the fountain the water turns the color of Caribbean ocean water. Quite beautiful. But this fade in a couple of days. Even the blue water that cascades out of the fountain doesn't stain the cement. I have used this product for years (15) and reorder every year. I highly recommend it. Does not harm the birds that drink out of my fountain.
Question: Will this distort the color of resin fountain
Answer: It depends upon the amount of algae you're dealing with, realizing that chlorine-based products are far more effective than non-chlorine (with names often starting with "oxy ...". This article explains the pluses and minuses of both sanitizers: https://blog.poolcenter.com/article.aspx?articleid=6631

User questions & answers

Question: How many drops do I put in my fountain that’s uses 1 1/2 gallons of water
Answer: That is not it’s intended purpose. I’m sure you could use enough to do that but at much higher concentration than suggested. Moving water in fountain usually limits mosquito reproduction.
Question: What is/are the active ingredient(s
Answer: I used it in my galvanized metal fountain this summer and have had no problems.
Question: Will it kill plants around the fountain
Answer: I don’t think so. If it’s not safe for fish ponds, I can’t imagine that it would be for birds.
Question: Does this kill mosquito eggs
Answer: I do not have lime in my water. It is very alkaline it does help with algae.
