Algaecide for fountains is a product commonly used in the maintenance of water features, such as fountains, water gardens, ponds, and other outdoor decorative water elements. Here's what you need to know about algaecides for fountains and their relevance to Water Treatment, Water Gardens & Ponds, Outdoor Decor, and Patio Lawn & Garden:

  1. Purpose: Algaecides are chemical treatments designed to control and prevent the growth of algae in water features. Algae growth is a common issue in outdoor fountains and ponds, as it can make the water appear green or murky and detract from the overall aesthetics.

  2. Algae Control: Algae in fountains and water gardens can be unsightly and can affect the overall water quality. Algaecides work by killing or inhibiting the growth of algae, helping to keep the water clear and free from excessive algae blooms.

  3. Types of Algaecides: There are different types of algaecides available, including chemical-based algaecides and more eco-friendly, natural alternatives. The choice of algaecide depends on the specific needs of your water feature and your preferences for water treatment.

  4. Application: Algaecides for fountains are typically easy to apply. You add the recommended dosage to the water, following the manufacturer's instructions. Some algaecides come in liquid form, while others may be available in tablet or granular form.

  5. Preventative Maintenance: Algaecides can be used as part of regular maintenance to prevent algae growth, or they can be applied when an algae problem arises. Regular maintenance helps keep the water feature looking clean and clear.

  6. Safety: It's important to handle algaecides with care and follow safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Some algaecides may be harmful to aquatic life, so they should be used judiciously and kept out of reach of children and pets.

  7. Compatibility: Before using an algaecide, ensure that it is compatible with the materials and plants in your water feature. Some algaecides may harm certain types of aquatic plants or fish, so it's crucial to read the product label and instructions.

  8. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of algaecides can vary depending on the product and the severity of the algae problem. It may take some time to see noticeable results, and multiple applications may be necessary.

In summary, algaecide for fountains is a product used to control and prevent algae growth in outdoor water features like fountains, ponds, and water gardens. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the visual appeal and water quality of these decorative elements in outdoor spaces.

User questions & answers

Question: The water in my outdoor fountain starts to give off a foul smell after a while. Will eradicating the algae and slime remove the odor as well? Thanks
Answer: If the smell is caused by the algae and slime, this product should also eliminate it. I add the product weekly and have not had a problem with algae (or odor!)
Question: Can this be used on a small tabletop indoor fountain? And is it necessary to use bleach alongside this product
Answer: Hello,Yes, you can use it in a tabletop fountain indoors. You do not need to use bleach when using this product.Thank you.
Question: can it be used in a cement bird bath? Will it keep water an cement from getting green an slimy
Answer: Yes it will. It does a great job. I will be getting more. Plus you don't need to put much in. Only a few drops. Depending on the size of the fountain
Question: Is this product for cats drinking out of fountain
Answer: Yes it is. I was looking for a chemical that would be safe for a fountain that cats and birds occasionally drink from, and this does fit that bill. I see in this thread that there is quite some confusion about this topic, because the label says that it is a pesticide and lists warnings for human consumption while at the same time saying it is safe for pets and birds (but not most fish). In fact both are true - it is all about the quantities. Most of the things we consume are dangerous when consumed in pure form or large amounts. Large amounts of table salt are harmful, just like large amounts of chlorine which is typically added to our drinking water. In fact, even large amounts of completely purified and de-ionised water will kill you. That obviously does not mean that you should not drink water or eat anything with salt in it - it just means that an excess of anything can be bad. The active chemical in this algaecide is polyquat. Polyquat has been extensively studied and starts to show toxicity in various animals at ingested amounts of 0.5g-1g per kg body weight per day over an extended period of time. This product contains 30% polyquat, so for a child that weighs 20 pounds drinking in the order of a tablespoon per day directly out of the bottle would be likely to cause problems. This is why there is a warning on the label: if anyone would ingest a large amount directly from the bottle this could definitely be harmful. However if you use the product as directed, you actually add only one drop of the product per gallon of water. Even a tiny kitten that weighs 2 pounds would have to drink 30 gallons a day from that fountain to ingest enough of the chemical to get into the range of adverse effects. Obviously that is not very likely. It is possible that some subtle effects are not detected in studies, so it is typically recommended to stay well below the dose that would cause any issues, but as a kitten is unlikely to drink more than a cup it stays about 500x under the exposure limits. Finally: some chemicals can accumulate in the body and thereby long-term exposure to small quantities can still become dangerous over time. Retention of polyquat in the body is minimal, so this is not a real concern for this product. I hope that clarifies some of the confusion. source: https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/122130603#section=Top

I highly recommend it. Does not harm the birds that drink out of my fountain.

User questions & answers

Question: I have three crane pumps in my fountain. Is this product safe for the pumps? They are a mix of metals. Brass, stainless etc
Answer: Has not affected my natural rock & concrete waterfall. No effect on two in-ground black vinyl koi ponds either. Unsure of painted surfaces ... depends on the paint & how applied.
Question: Does this product stain cement
Answer: Yes. It's wonderful. I no longer remember it's instructions which I used to follow explicitly when we first got the pond. Then I found the pond care people simply sprinkling it everywhere without measureing and said it was perfectly safe. We have streams which get string algae. I turn off the water to them, sprinkle it all evenly with Ecoblast, let it sit for at least 30-45 minutes and turn them back on. If you aren't treating streams then you would turn off the skimmer so the water is still and then sprinkle the Ecoblast. It sinks to the bottom and debris floats to the top. After 30 minutes then turn the skimmer back on. Just be prepared to clean the skimmer in short order :)
Question: What kind of non chlorine product should be used to eliminate existing algae growth before using the fountec as a maintenance product
Answer: Hello, We apologize for the frequently confusing amazon listings. Most of the individual dealers listing this product have little control over what the ad actually says, but i can assure you that from Practical Garden Ponds this will be 7 pounds of product if you choose the 7 lb option of the three optional sizes.
Question: Does this eat away the finish/paints of a poly-resin fountain
Answer: Thanks for your question. There is a printed expiration date on this product and based on the answers to this question I'm guessing some sellers may try to sell product past that date. Our Ecoblast's printed expiration date isn't until May of 2020. It is worth noting that if kept dry this product will maintain effectiveness even past the printed expiration date. Algae growth can appear as “green water” blooms, "pea-green soup", filamentous algae on plants, or floating mats (blanket weed). Algae grows when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in the water, usually in spring prior to plant growth, and in the summer in direct sun.

API POND ALGAEFIX Algae Control works fast to control algae growth and keep ponds, water gardens and fountains clean and clear.

User questions & answers

Question: safe for plants
Answer: i add a couple drops every time I add water.
Question: what are the ingredients
Answer: Algae Break 90 can be used in both regular chlorinated pools and salt water pools. It does an amazing job in preventing algae growth as long as you keep a proper chlorine level and your ph and alkalinity are within range. This is my second year using Algae Break 90 and it really works!
Question: Instructions say 1 ounce per 5 gallons. My birdbath is not 5 gallons! How much per 1 gallon? Math is not my best thing
Answer: I do use chlorine. My pool is chlorine based, but I do not close my pool during the winter. I used to close and every spring we had the worst time getting out pool clear again in the spring. So about 3 years ago, I discovered Algae Break through my local pool company. I pour a bottle in every 3 months and my pool stays absolutely clear. I run it all winter and it is out in the open, no cover, but I have a automatic pool vacuum that I also run about 2 times a day. I live in North Central Alabama, so it gets pretty cold in the winter. Hope this helps!
Question: How often do you add this to the water
Answer: It means that the bottle is good to treat a pool up to 10,000 gallons.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this on a galvanized stock tank pond
Answer: I have had birds drink out of my pond after I put in the Aglaecide and did not see any harmful effects. But use as directed. I put in two doses too close together and several of my fish died.
Question: On average how often do you use this product
Answer: I have a 1/4 acre pond and I can get 5 treatments out of one gallon. Keep in mind, all I use it for is algie growth on the edges of the pond. Now for the good news, I have almost stop using it since started using pond dye. That stop the algie almost 100 percent if I make the pond very dark with the dye. Also, I found cirtine granuals to be more effective than the liquid. But, give the dye a thought and do some research on it. You may find it a better choice, I did. Saves a tone of $$ as well.
Question: I have Japanese Trapdoor snail. Can I use this product
Answer: I couldn't say what the risks are in using this Cutrine in small ponds. IF I still had my 100 gal. pond I would probably try a very weak solution of it. Be sure of the concentration shown on the label. Some jugs are a 9% copper and some are a 27% copper solution. That would make a big factor in your dilution rate. If it were me I would mix about 2 or 3 tablespoons into a gallon of water then add it to my pond then check for results in a few days. I would want plenty of circulation in that pond, too. It still may require scraping the algae from the sides.
Question: Will Algaecide harm birds
Answer: Yes, it's safe to drink, and it can be applied to water the water in the tank, but it has to be mixed with it first to disperse it before the cattle can ingest it. For questions like this one, call their tech support number. This product is used in water for fish farms because it does no harm. I've been using it since 1995 in my water-filled quarry where people swim and fish, and it works dramatically well.

User questions & answers

Question: How much should I add for a 5 gallon container pond
Answer: I believe the dose is 80ml (1 ounce) per 500 gallons. If you do the math it is .8 ml per 5 gallons not 8 ml
Question: bird bath fountain
Answer: I wouldn't use it for a bird bath. On here it says it's safe for fish and pond plants. Yet when I got the bottle and read it, it isn't safe for either.
Question: Will it kill the algae in a WaterRower fitness machine tank? I can't open the tank to scrub, only small hole to put water in so it needs to remove it
Answer: I returned this product because it was not safe for fish. However, from my experience with swimming pool algae, algaecides will kill the algae but you still have to brush it off.
