11 best rain gauges
Rain gauges are essential weather instruments used to measure the amount of precipitation, primarily rainfall, that falls in a specific location over a given period. These devices are commonly used in various settings, including home gardens, agricultural fields, meteorological stations, and scientific research. Here is some information about rain gauges:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a rain gauge is to collect and measure the amount of rain that falls in a specific area. This data is valuable for weather monitoring, agriculture, water resource management, and flood prediction.
Types of Rain Gauges:
- Standard Rain Gauges: These are simple cylindrical or funnel-shaped containers with graduated markings on the side to measure the depth of rainfall.
- Tipping Bucket Rain Gauges: These gauges use a funnel to direct rainwater into a small bucket with a pivot. When the bucket reaches a certain level, it tips and empties, recording a specific amount of rainfall.
- Electronic Rain Gauges: Modern rain gauges often use electronic sensors to measure rainfall. These sensors can provide real-time data and may be connected to weather monitoring systems.
- Wireless Rain Gauges: Some rain gauges are equipped with wireless technology to transmit data to a receiver or a connected device, allowing users to monitor rainfall remotely.
Installation: Proper placement of a rain gauge is crucial for accurate measurements. Rain gauges should be positioned in an open area away from obstructions like trees and buildings to ensure that raindrops can freely enter the gauge. It should also be level and stable to prevent tipping.
Reading and Maintenance: To measure rainfall accurately, users should regularly check and empty the rain gauge. The collected rainwater can be measured using the markings or read electronically, depending on the type of gauge. Routine cleaning and maintenance help ensure the gauge's accuracy.
Recording Rainfall Data: Rain gauges are often part of weather monitoring networks, and data collected is used to track daily, monthly, and yearly rainfall patterns. This information is vital for climate studies, flood prediction, and water resource management.
Garden and Home Use: Many homeowners use rain gauges as decorative garden ornaments while also keeping track of rainfall for gardening purposes. They help gardeners determine when and how much to water their plants, which can conserve water and promote healthy growth.
Accuracy: The accuracy of a rain gauge depends on its design and calibration. Standard gauges may have some limitations, while electronic gauges are typically more precise.
Importance for Agriculture: Farmers and agricultural professionals rely on rain gauges to make informed decisions about crop irrigation, planting, and harvesting. Adequate rainfall is crucial for crop health and yield.
Rain gauges come in various shapes and sizes, from traditional cylindrical models to more advanced electronic versions. Choosing the right rain gauge depends on your specific needs and preferences for measuring and monitoring rainfall in your area.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have had several wireless rain gauges and they only seem to work for a year or so. Does anyone have it for say 3 years and have it still working |
Answer: | My second unit is was purchased in 2017. It has worked properly the entire time. I just moved and will be buying another very soon. I'm replacing the rain gauge because if it sits in the direct sun for a significant portion of the day, the plastic housing gets brittle. The tabs on mine broke long ago and it is now held together with tape. Functional but not pretty. The unit does require some maintenance. I've found that in the spring and fall, "tree trash" can collect in the cup and block the inlet. I've also have to clear the spiders out from time to time. I highly recommend this product. So much so, i will be buying #3 in the near future. |
Question: | Can I make it empty using wireless from inside? To clear a little bit of rain and start fresh |
Answer: | It dumps automatically, there is no remote control. That would be useless anyway. You can reset any of the recorded readings from the remote monitor. It can record daily rainfall, event (multiple days of continuous rain), weekly, monthly and annual. What else could yo possible want in a rain gage. |
Question: | Does this need to be mounted, or can it just sit on the ground |
Answer: | I guess it can be, however, for safety of the gage it should be mounted, for mine I use a 2x4x8 , I cut about ten inches off, drove the 2x4x8 in the ground then nailed the 10inch piece on the top ( as in a T shape). I then mounted the gage ontop. This is very secure and easy. Once mounted the battery can be change without having to unmount the gage. Note, mineis about 30ft fom the receiver insidean works fine. Hope this helps |
Question: | When it rains, the alarm comes on. But it never registers more than .1 of an inch, even if we get 3 inches. How do I fix it |
Answer: | i'm having the same problem. we had over an inch of rain over the weekend and it read "00.0". i'm going to try changing the battery. if that don't work i'm going too contact amazon. sorry, i can't help you. |
Question: | Can it be easily and securely mounted on a metal fence/railing |
Answer: | I simply stick mine in the ground. But if you have appropriate tools (drill and bit and get the right screws) it could be successfully mounted on a metal fence or railing. It would be secure. You would have to decide if it was easy or too complicated to do. |
Question: | Are the screws included |
Answer: | Screws are not included. |
Question: | If you mount it on a fence, how do you empty it |
Answer: | Two screws in the fence mount the gauge. There are slotted holes on the gauge that allow you to simply slip it off the mounting screws to empty the water. Then slip back in place. Easy to use and to mount. |
Question: | Will it break when water freezes inside the gauge |
Answer: | It does now! I have been ordering this gauge since 2006. It was made in America then. The acrylic was so heavy when made in America it would not break, the expanding ice simply moved up in the column. As soon as the made in China move came the gauge wall thickness was literally cut in half. I know because I very carefully measured it. Would love to find a thick one once again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where can I get the mounting hardware “sold separately”? This is so dumb |
Answer: | Yes any screws that have a head smaller than the holes in the gauge base |
Question: | Is this a 12" OR 5" gauge |
Answer: | It's 12" tall but measures up to 5" of rain. |
Question: | Great question concerning the front yard. I don't have a yard at all, it is a ranch. Will the 704-1531 still work or should I consider another model |
Answer: | It should work fine in any "open" area. You can stick it in the ground or mount on a post/fence. Just make sure not underneath a tree or something. Also make sure you mount it in a way that you can empty it after gaining the measure you are tracking. |
Question: | Is this made in the usa? i wish amazon was like ebay and you could hit a button to only go to things made in usa |
Answer: | Made in China via LaCrosse, Wisc., according to the box. Still, it's sturdy and measures rain well. |
Question: | What is the maximum capacity of the gauge in inches of rain? I'm guessing about |
Answer: | I believe it's at least that. The inner cylinder is 1" than flows into the large outer cylinder which has to be decanted inch by inch into the inner cylinder as my outer cylinder was never marked. I only ever recall a maximum of a 6.00" rain here on the farm. |
Question: | what do you attach it to? Does it have a stake for the ground |
Answer: | I attached this to a metal stake used to hold chicken wire. At the top of the stake, I bolted on a 2x4, then mounted the bracket that comes with the gage to the 2 x 4. Just make sure that you have the top of the rain gage high enough above the top of your post that you don't get water bouncing off the top of the post into the gage. A few inches should do it - mine is about 6" above the top of the 2x4. |
Question: | Is there a measurement on the outside tube for the accumulated inches or do you have decant from the outside tube through the inside tube to measure |
Answer: | No there is not a measurement on the outside tube. You must decant in order to get an accurate measurement. I just performed the calibration test myself and each 1 inch of water collected on the inside tube is not equal to .10 inches collected in the outer tube as some state in these answers. The closet that you can get to measuring without decanting is by using the formula in user okrah’s answer which is: Where the outer tubes water level meets the inner tubes markings, take that decimal number and multiply it by 8.8 then add 1 (this 1 is the amount of water already filling the inner tube) and that will give you a very close measurement. Albeit not as accurate as decanting. |
Question: | measure snow |
Answer: | Take out the inner tube and take off the funnel. Then you will capture the snow in the big outer tube. There are two ways to measure the snow but what I like to do, after the snow has stopped, is to bring the tube with the captured snow in it, let it melt, than pour the water into the inner tube using the funnel. If the liquid measurement comes up to .10" it has snowed about 1". Rule of thumb-1 inch of liquid precipitation equals 10 inches of snow. This will vary tho when you have a heavy, wet snow or a light, dry snow. Hope this has helped. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why are the 10ths of inches not marked correctly? The lines only show 4/10ths |
Answer: | That is because they are 1/8 inch graduations. |
Question: | They look about 6-7 feet tall in picture, is this true |
Answer: | Not true. They are 5 1/2 inches tall. |
Question: | Does this gauge have a lip at the top? The picture is unclear about that |
Answer: | It has a very small lip. In my opinion, it is more like a slight thickness to strengthen a critical place. I am pleased with my purchase. One in use and one for a spare. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is there a way to prevent the glass from breaking in freezing weather? (Besides removing it |
Answer: | It's glass. Glass breaks when it freezes sometimes. No way to change the science here. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you mount it |
Answer: | It may be mounted on a fence as long as the opening is a few inches above the top of the fencing. We mounted ours on a piece of 1x2 driven into the ground in the middle of the yard. The mount is screwed into that 1x2. Keep it at least 6 feet away from trees or walls that will divert rain from it. |
Question: | It doesn't look like it could possibly read accurately since the collection tank is so large. How could it be accurate when most gauges are small |
Answer: | The large collection opening at the top is consistent with other rain gauges I've seen. The large size makes it easy to read from my patio door, I like it. |
Question: | What is the outside diameter of the tube |
Answer: | 1.75 inches diameter of the tube. 3.75inches diameter of the green collector top |
Question: | Looks like a great gage but my question is always how can it be emptied without taking off the bracket |
Answer: | The bracket has a slot in the bottom and the gage has a 'peg' that fits in it.. there is an opening at the top also.. so you put the tube IN the top opening and it lines up with the bottom.. when you want to empty it, you just take the tube out from the top and empty it.. very simple.. I have had one for over 20 years.. Give it a try, I am sure you will love it.. |
Question: | What is the maximum capacity of the gauge in inches of rain? I'm guessing about |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does it attach? I have a vinyl fence will it work on that |
Answer: | Locate it where it will collect only the rain which falls directly on it. If the vinyl is thick just screw it on the same way you would connect it to a wooden fence. If the vinyl is relatively thin and hollow, use an expanding insert or bolt (like you would use in drywall). Most hardware stores can help you find the exact connector you need if you do not already have them. If you have a 'picket' fence, you may need to attach a mounting board to the fence first. |
Question: | What happens in freezing weather |
Answer: | Freezing weather will make the plastic crack and leak. So, as I found out, not suitable for use in North Carolina. I am looking for some replacement rain gauge that will work during the winter - most nights here do not freeze and most of our winter precipitation is rain, not snow. |
Question: | It looks like rain from the deck railing would splash into the gauge, causing high readings. Anyone checked the accuracy of this gauge |
Answer: | Splashing is definitely a concern with this rain gauge, especially in heavy rain events. Consider the Stratus gauge. It's more expensive, but it is very accurate (used by the NWS and one of the largest rain networks in the country, CoCoRaHS www.cocorahs.org). You can find it online for about $27 + shipping. |
Question: | Why does scaling on gauge have 1 1/2" to collect 1" of rain |
Answer: | The opening dimensions at the top of the gauge are larger than the dimensions at the bottom, 1.5 times more so, in fact. The top is collecting rain in an 8.1 square inch area, but collecting in the bottom in a 5.4 square inch area (8.1/5.4 = 1.5.) So the gauge scaling is graduated to allow for the difference. Notice also that the scale between the inch lines decreases as the level rises. Make sense? |
- Our beautiful rain gauge will capture and measure the rainfall in your garden.
- An attractive ornamental stake during the day, with colourful metal cattail and butterfly adorning the top.
- The solar panel captures the sunlight and illuminates the LED glass rainfall tube at dusk.
- On/off switch located on solar panel.
- Stands 25" tall on a 4-1/2" pronged metal stake.
User questions & answers
Question: | How tall is it |
Answer: | I bought 2 and they about 2ft tall. We have ours in the front flower beds about 14 inches off the ground. They are very pretty. |
Question: | Where is it made? Country of origin |
Answer: | It was purchased as a gift, so do not know country of origin |
Question: | Can you tell me which replacement tube to buy for this holder? I got one that is too skinny and one that is too big. Which brand will fit |
Answer: | I found it on EBay. I brought a rain gauge udometer replacement glass 8” tall x 2” large print. |
Question: | Need to replace the glass tube - are they available |
Answer: | Menards and most hardware stores carry the replacement glass |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the yearly total calendar year, jan to dec or year since batteries were installed? in our area the rainy season is typically sept- may |
Answer: | Hello, I would be happy to answer that for you! The yearly rainfall total will reset one year after the unit is powered on so you can keep track of the rainfall total continuously over the new year if you choose. If you have further questions, please reach out to our support team via live chat or email request on the AcuRite Support website. Have a terrific day! Haylee AcuRite Support Team |
Question: | Is there a leaf guard in the collection cup |
Answer: | Hello Larry , Ga, There is not a leaf guard/debris filter in the rain gauge however, the opening is designed to keep most debris out. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Support Team at 262-729-4852, we are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Rachell AcuRite Support Team |
Question: | Does the rain cup come with a mounting bracket |
Answer: | Yes, the bottom of the rain cup detaches, allowing you to screw the bottom to a deck railing or other level surface. You also install the batteries in the bottom section while the top is detached. |
Question: | Are batteries included |
Answer: | no batteries, takes 3 AAA's in base. I like the system, but when the batteries for a remote die, you have to restart the base station (pull a battery) for it to start receiving data from the remote. All the saved rain data is lost. That is the only problem I have had with the unit that I have. Also be sure that the rain detector is level in all directions, more accurate that way. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you hang for the rain gauge on a deck rather than staking it in the ground |
Answer: | There is no hole at the top to use for hanging it. If you can makeshift a way to do that then, yes it will work, but it will still have the metal rod on the bottom. It will look funny. |
Question: | can I purchase a replacement glass tube? Mine broke after it froze with water in it |
Answer: | Not sure if you checked amazon site but worth a try... this is Taylor Heritage Collection. If not on Amazon for replacement parts you can google it where there are several offerings... actually might find replacement of the entire thing more practical then you’d have spare parts... |
