13 best compost thermometers
Compost thermometers are specialized thermometers designed for monitoring the temperature of compost piles or bins. They play a crucial role in successful composting by helping users gauge the internal temperature of the compost and ensure that it reaches the necessary temperatures for efficient decomposition. Here's what you need to know about compost thermometers:
Purpose:
Composting is a biological process that involves the decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms. To maximize the efficiency of this process, it's essential to maintain the right temperature range.
Compost thermometers are used to measure the internal temperature of compost piles or bins. They help ensure that the compost pile is heating up sufficiently to break down organic matter and kill weed seeds and pathogens.
Construction:
Compost thermometers typically have a long probe, often made of stainless steel, that can be inserted deep into the compost pile.
The thermometer may have a dial or digital display at the top of the probe, allowing users to read the temperature easily.
Some compost thermometers have color-coded temperature zones on the display to help users quickly determine if the compost is within the desired range.
Temperature Monitoring:
The internal temperature of a compost pile is indicative of its decomposition progress. It also helps users determine if the compost is in the "hot," "warm," or "cool" phase of composting.
Ideal composting temperatures typically range from 130°F to 160°F (54°C to 71°C) for the "hot" phase.This is when microorganisms are most active and break down organic matter efficiently.
Compost thermometers allow users to track temperature trends over time. If the temperature falls outside the optimal range, adjustments can be made by adding or turning the compost materials.
Usage:
To use a compost thermometer, simply insert the probe deep into the compost pile or bin, avoiding contact with any hard or woody materials that could damage the thermometer.
Wait for a moment until the temperature stabilizes and then read the thermometer's display.
Regular temperature monitoring helps users determine when the compost is ready for use, which is typically when it cools down and resembles dark, crumbly soil.
Benefits:
Compost thermometers provide a reliable way to ensure that your compost pile is working efficiently and breaking down organic matter effectively.
By maintaining the right temperature, you can also prevent common composting issues like unpleasant odors, slow decomposition, and the survival of weed seeds and pathogens.
Compost thermometers are valuable tools for both novice and experienced composters, as they take the guesswork out of the composting process.
Storage and Care:
After use, it's important to clean and store compost thermometers properly to ensure their longevity and accuracy.
Store the thermometer in a dry place, and keep it clean to prevent contamination.
In summary, compost thermometers are specialized tools used to monitor the internal temperature of compost piles or bins. They are essential for achieving efficient composting, ensuring that the compost reaches the necessary temperatures for effective decomposition, and helping composters troubleshoot and adjust their composting process as needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | If I leave it stuck in the pile outdoors with that cause the moisture to get in the dial area? In other words is it outdoor rated |
Answer: | There is a chance the metal might warp due to temperature differences. We recommend storing it in a cool place when not in use, like a shed or garage, and indoors i. The off-season if you live in an area where it freezes. |
Question: | Can this be used in temperatures higher than 180 degrees? I don't want it to break if it's used in boiling water |
Answer: | I am not sure, however as the research indicates if the temperature of the pile need s to be monitored every couple of weeks and if it is over 180 it needs to be turned and to be monitored closesly for spontaneous combustion. So with this said it would be logical that one will need to use the thermometer to verify if it is at or over 180 degree. Check the manufacturer to be certain. |
Question: | Where is it made? i try to buy products made in the usa |
Answer: | Ours is made in China. As far as I know, only the $100+ heavy duty versions of Reotemp are made in the USA. Happy composting, wherever you buy your thermometer! |
Question: | country of origin? amazon should state this for every item |
Answer: | I *think* it's assumed it's the U.S. (shipping origin) unless otherwise stated? Not totally sure, actually. As much as I buy from Amazon you'd think I know, LOL. |

At Greenco Gardening we care about environment! All our products are made of environment friendly materials.
Greenco Gardening Premium Compost Thermometer lets you know the temperature and health of your compost pile. Simply place the stem into the middle of your pile to get an accurate reading.
We have chosen for you few tips that will help you to enhance your composting experiance:
Activate your compost: 'Activators' can be added to your compost to help kick-start the process and speed up composting. Common compost activator materials are: comfrey leaves, grass clippings, young weeds, well-rotted chicken manure.
A moveable fresh ground: The soil beneath a compost bin becomes enriched as nutrients filter down with successive waterings. You can place your bin on a plot of earth which you plan to use for a future vegetable or flower bed, or fruit tree. Each year, you can move the bin to a different area; you'll get a double benefit - the compost from the bin, and a bed of nutrient-rich soil ready for new plantings.
Minimise unpleasant odors from your compost pile: This can be a concern in urban and suburban areas with small lots and neighbors living close by. Odors can be reduced, or eliminated, by following two practices: first, remember to not put bones or meat scraps into the compost; second, cover new additions to the compost pile with dry grass clippings or similar mulch. Adding lime or calcium will also neutralize odors. If the compost smells like ammonia, add carbon-rich elements such as straw, peat moss or dried leaves.
We wish you a happy composting and please let us know if you need something, we are here 24/7 to answer your questions

User questions & answers
Question: | How thick is the pole? What is the diameter of the pole |
Answer: | 1/4 in. |
Question: | How much of this thermometer must be immersed in the compost to get a tempature reading |
Answer: | The thermometer gave a reading when it was inserted about 8”, but inserting it all the way up temperature went higher. You want a reading on the center of compost where temperature is the highest. I’ve read compost breaks down faster when it is over 100 degrees. |
Question: | Can this be used in temperatures higher than 180 degrees? I don't want it to break if it's used in boiling water |
Answer: | Not recommended for boiling water applications. Another option would be a candy thermometer. |
Question: | Can this be used for measuringi boiling water |
Answer: | The highest temp marked on the scale is 180, so my official answer is NO. However, this has prompted me to dig mine out and stick it in boiling water. At a full rolling boil, mine reads 209 degrees at 3000 feet altitude, proving it functions at this temp. www.engineeringtoolbox.com/boiling-points-water-altitude-d_1344.html says it should read 206 at 3000 feet. If the long probe is what you need, this is likely your most affordable choice, as long as this accuracy is within your needs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the thread on the back of the gauge? Can a protective cage be made out of a pipe fitting and some pipe? Thanks |
Answer: | The threads are standard 1/2" male pipe thread. Mine was delivered with the 1/2" female thread X slip fitting and the appropriate length of 1/2" pvc attached for protection. I would suggest getting the optional handle for this to keep from bending the steel on the back of it if your probe hits something hard or you happen to not push exactly straight. Then all you will need is a 1/2" male threaded nipple to add the protective pipe that already comes with it. |
Question: | Does this thermometer come with a sheath so I can leave it at my composter |
Answer: | Yes, I believe it can be left at the composter. The one I purchased had a sheath. I took it to Zimbabwe to a Mission where I am encouraging organic gardening. |
Question: | Can this be calibrated regularly |
Answer: | Yes, our longer stem compost thermometers can be calibrated.CALIBRATION INSTRUCTIONS:Reference Bath: You will need a bath of water of a known temperature, typically an ice bath. The ice bath should be mostly ice, with just enough water to fill the spaces. The reference bath should be at least 4 inches deep (6 or more inches is better.) The bath should be agitated (stirred) just before or during calibration.Immersion: The thermometer should be immersed at least 4 inches into the bath, as the sensitive portionof the thermometer is in the last 2-3 inches of the stem.Calibration: Leave the thermometer in the bath for at least a minute, to make sure temperatures havestabilized. Then turn the small (1/4") hex screw head on the back of the dial case of the Thermometer untilthe pointer is at 32°F (0°C). You can use a flat screwdriver, or a small coin, or pliers to rotate the screwhead.Congratulations, your thermometer has been re-calibrated!If your thermometer will not recalibrate, it may need factory repair. (If the stem is bent, it cannot berepaired, and must be replaced). |
Question: | I'm looking for a thermometer that I could insert into 5 x 5 round bales of hay to monitor internal temp. Is your product capable |
Answer: | I really doubt it. It is an excellent thermometer with a very strong probe. You may be able to insert it at the core. If you decide to try one be sure to also purchase that orange handle that is also sold at Amazon. No one around here grows alfalfa or wheat any more, all corn and soybeans, so there are no big round bales locally I could try mine on. |

Question: | Does this disl fog up |
Answer: | Not in my experience. I use it to maintain mash temperature of 150-160F and there is some condensation buildup on the outside but never fogs inside the thermometer. |
Question: | How long does it take to get a accurate reading with this thermometer |
Answer: | When I've used it the thermometer typically reads within 30 seconds or so - I don't use it in soil, I insert it into a large quantity of cacao beans that are fermenting in order to see how hot the ferment is - I have found it to be very accurate |
Question: | Will this work as a compost thermometer |
Answer: | I would think so ..... |
Question: | Can this be left outside permanently |
Answer: | Mine has been left outdoors for roughly 9 months. Glad this question came up . First hard freeze in the South coming in 2 days. Reminded me to go get before it freezes and cracks |

Question: | Since the temperature of compost differs depending on its depth, at what point along the stem is the temperature measured |
Answer: | The temperature sensing portion is in the last 2 inches at the pointed tip of the Backyard Pro. We recommend trying to target the center of your compost pile for the best reading. |
Question: | Is this made in the USA |
Answer: | The Backyard Pro is made in China. We do offer US made thermometers if you are looking for that, search for: Reotemp heavy duty compost thermometer. |
Question: | Is this 36" or 24" stem? I see both listed in specifications |
Answer: | We offer it in two lengths 24" and 36". Both are available. |
Question: | how much of the tip is required for temperature reading? AKA can this give me a reading at 10 inches? 5 inches etc into a pile so I can see temps |
Answer: | The temperature sensitive portion is the last 2 inches at the tip of the pointed end of the probe. So you don't have to necessarily put the entire stem into the compost pile. |

The temperature of your compost is crucial to knowing when to water, turn, add more material and when it is ready for your plants. This is where the Firgus compost thermometer can help in providing accurate temperature readings from your compost pile to determine the current stage of decomposition within your compost heap.
Knowing the accurate temperature of your compost heap from the center of the pile with minimal disturbance will let you know:
- When to turn your pile;
- When to add more material and what type of material to add;
- When to water;
- When the compost is ready.
The Firgus compost thermometer can be used in your compost pile or in your compost tumbler to determine the stage and health of composting which is shown on the gauge over three easy to read temperature zones, being:
- Warm – This is when the bacteria, worms and insects start to work and breakdown your kitchen scraps and yard waste into a useable plant dressing;
- Active – This is when the compost really gets working and the fungi, microorganisms and beneficial bacteria are working at accelerated rates to break down the scraps into a rich compost;
- Hot – At this temperature range this is when any seeds and diseases that may have been in any scraps get killed off and the compost is almost ready for use.
Because of the quality construction of the Firgus backyard soil thermometer this can be left in your compost pile overnight and still be working fine the next day.
The Firgus compost thermometer comes complete with a bonus stem sheath to protect the probe of the thermometer when this is stored away in your garden shed.
- Soil thermometer prefect for providing accurate readings for the heat of your compost pile to determine the current stage of decomposition in your composter bin or compost heap for your garden or hobby farm.
