12 best hummingbird foods
Hummingbird food, also known as hummingbird nectar, is a specially formulated liquid solution designed to provide essential nourishment to hummingbirds. This food is used in hummingbird feeders to attract and sustain these small, fast-flying birds. Here are some important details about hummingbird food:
Ingredients: The primary ingredients in hummingbird food are water and sugar. The recommended ratio for making hummingbird nectar is typically 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. This ratio closely resembles the natural nectar found in flowers that hummingbirds feed on.
Sugar Type: White granulated sugar is commonly used to make hummingbird food. Avoid using brown sugar, honey, molasses, or artificial sweeteners, as these can be harmful to hummingbirds.
Boiling: Many experts recommend bringing the water to a boil before adding sugar to ensure that any impurities or microorganisms are eliminated. However, boiling is not always necessary if you use clean, filtered water.
Cooling: After dissolving the sugar in boiling water, allow the nectar solution to cool completely before filling the hummingbird feeder. Hot nectar can harm hummingbirds.
No Food Coloring: Do not add food coloring to the nectar. It's unnecessary and potentially harmful to the birds.
Feeder Filling: Fill the hummingbird feeder with the nectar solution, leaving some space at the top to prevent spillage when you hang it.
Feeder Maintenance: Regularly clean the hummingbird feeder and replace the nectar every 2-4 days, depending on temperature and humidity. Cleaning is essential to prevent mold and bacterial growth, which can be harmful to the birds.
Seasonal Adjustments: During hot summer months, you may need to change the nectar more frequently as it can spoil quickly in the heat. Conversely, during cooler seasons, you can extend the interval between nectar changes.
Avoid Pesticides: Avoid using pesticides in your garden, as they can harm not only hummingbirds but also the insects they rely on for protein.
Plant Nectar-Rich Flowers: To supplement the hummingbirds' diet and create a more natural habitat, consider planting nectar-rich flowers in your garden. These can include trumpet vine, salvia, bee balm, and fuchsia, among others.
Migration Considerations: If you live in an area where hummingbirds migrate, adjust the timing of when you put out and take down your feeder to align with their migration patterns.
Freezing Weather: In regions with freezing temperatures, remove the feeder before it freezes to prevent damage. You can also use heated hummingbird feeders to provide food during cold spells.
In summary, hummingbird food or nectar is a simple yet essential element in attracting and supporting these beautiful birds in your backyard. By following the proper guidelines for preparing, maintaining, and placing hummingbird feeders, you can create an inviting environment that helps sustain these fascinating creatures.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require refrigeration after opening |
Answer: | Once opened, we recommend storing this liquid nectar in the refrigerator. It can be good for up to one month after opening. |
Question: | Do I have to add boiling water to mix, or will tap water do |
Answer: | Simply mix with water! The water does not need to be boiled first. |
Question: | How often should the nectar mix be changed |
Answer: | If you live in very warm temps change nectar once a week if cooler temps 80 and under it can last for 2 weeks. I never fill feeders to Max so I don’t waste. |
Question: | Is it supposed to be this tarte versus sweet with a slight carbonated taste? That's how mine is? do they truly like it? or is it spoiled |
Answer: | I don't know. I have never tasted it. I did use this product for a while but this year switched to sugar water which I make myself. It is much more economical and the hummers do love my mix of 1 part sugar to 3 parts of water (do not add food coloring). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it need to be refrigerated after opening |
Answer: | Once opened, this product should be refrigerated. |
Question: | Do you have to refrigerate any unused portions made ? How long is the solution in the feeders good for, or is it OK until used up |
Answer: | Once mixed, nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 months. We recommend cleaning feeders and providing fresh nectar at least once a week so it does not spoil or ferment. When outdoor temperatures rise, more frequent cleaning is necessary. Here is a quick reference guide to use when dealing with different climates: 70°-84°F (21°-28°C)… Change Nectar and Clean Feeder every 3 days 85°-87°F (29°-30°C)… Change Nectar and Clean Feeder every 2 days 88°-99°F (31°-37°C)… Change Nectar and Clean Feeder every day |
Question: | Red dye may not be good birds, nor is it necessary. Mix your own nectar 1/4 c cane sugar to 1 c of water. Is this true |
Answer: | I found out that red dye is unhealthy for hummingbirds. One cup sugar to 4 cups water, heat to almost boiling but remove from heat before it boils. Also clean the feeder each time before filling. |
Question: | Why hummingbirds will NOT eat perky-pet nectar |
Answer: | You can easily make your own in 3-4 minutes with plain water and white sugar. I bet you have some in your cupboard right now! Do you have a pyrex bowl or glass measuring cup? Fill it with two cups of water and add 1/2 cup sugar. This is a ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Stir it and microwave for 2-3 minutes. Stir again and microwave a minute more. Cool it to room temp., and your (cheap$$) nectar is ready to fill your hummingbird feeder. Then, be patient. They may not come right away, but birds will tweet the location, and eventually you'll get visitors. Companies who sell red-dye nectar are profiting from a product that is both unnecessary and harmful. It is shameful and can be discouraged by simply refusing to buy them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hay que refrigerarlo luego te preparado |
Answer: | Once mixed, unused nectar should be refrigerated. |
Question: | What can you use in a outside feeder so the water will not freeze |
Answer: | This is Texas. Hummingbird’s arrive in May and leave 1st cold snap in October. Water barely freezes in Dec/Jan. It’s 73 out right now. |
Question: | Does this product have expiration date |
Answer: | I don't know about an expiration date. I dumped it in a baggie and labeled it. However I will let you know that I didn't get any hummingbirds with this mixture but after making my own I had quite a few everyday. 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water, bring to boil for 2 minutes and then let cool. Store leftovers in the refrigerator. I just adjusted the quantities and made enough for 2 feeders. |
Question: | What makes it red? I have heard that when making your own hummingbird nectar, that you should forego putting food coloring in it |
Answer: | Please don't buy anything with artificial red color. The Audubon Society recommends making your own with regular sugar. 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. (1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup boiling water). |

User questions & answers
Question: | The analysis on the bottle sez 80% moisture, assuming that means water, so the feeder cannot be left outside in winter in the pacific nw |
Answer: | I leave my feeder outside in winter. I rotate them more frequently in winter, with ones I keep inside. Works for me. Hope this answer was helpful. |
Question: | how can hummies drink this out doors when the bottle says refrigerate? made me pause after i bought it. don't want to give them food poisoning. anyone |
Answer: | The nectar does have a preservative in it to help keep it fresh. Depending on how many birds you have coming to the feeders refrigeration after opening keeps it fresh for months, even over the winter if in higher latitudes. I'm in St. Louis and my feeders are in full sun so I only put enough in the feeders to last 10 - 14 days then clean rinse and refill. It was amazing how much more the birds liked the Kaytee clear nectar. I'll never use anything else. BTW if the nectar gets too old they will just stop feeding. |
Question: | How long does this stayed "good" after opening? I've tried other stuff that the birds seem to stop liking after it sits out for so long. thanks |
Answer: | I put mine in the fridge after opening. I fill my feeder as full as it will take & the birds feed until it's empty. It lasts just over a week & my hummers LOVE this stuff!!! I'm going to order a larger feeder to see if they demolish the additional food or if I'll have to cut back on how much I fill. I've got a feeling that I won't have to cut back! |
Question: | Does it have to be refrigerated after opening |
Answer: | Hi, Sam! Under storage, it states "Refrigerate After Opening." I always purchase the 64 oz container and have a special place for it in the refrigerator. The is such an outstanding product that making refrigerator room is such a small accomodation! Enjoy, Elaine Brown! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the ingredients in this product? Does it have any additional vitamins or calcium in addition to the micro copper |
Answer: | As per the info on the bag. The ingredients are Pure Cane Sugar and Micro-nutrient copper. We cannot verify any other information. |
Question: | Is that artificial color |
Answer: | This is a clear all natural hummingbird nectar. There is no artificial coloring. |
Question: | The bag was broken when it arrived so i threw the bag away and put the powder in a container. now i no longer have the instructions. what is the ratio |
Answer: | For hummingbirds: 1 scoop nectar powder per 1 C water. For orioles, 1 scoop per 1-1/2 C water. Nectar stays fresh in feeder for up to 2 weeks, even in hot weather. Store extra nectar in fridge. |
Question: | What size is the scoop |
Answer: | approx 3 tbsp |
Question: | Why did we only receive one bottle |
Answer: | I ordered more than one item—I purchased six jars/bottles 14 oz each for the best price I could find. |
Question: | Is this for just 1 jar? I can get the exact same thing at my grocery store for |
Answer: | Yes, it's just 1 jar. If you can obtain the same product locally for $1.99, go for it. |
Question: | how many ounces of liquid nectar does this make |
Answer: | A 32-oz bottle makes approximately 128 oz. when mixed 3:1 according to label directions. I usually "eyeball" it rather than measure, hence the approximate number. Oops, this answer applies to the liquid nectar. The jar of powdered nectar is 12 oz. According to label, use 7 cups (56 oz.) of water to the entire jar of powder. I have never measured how many the actual number of ounces it produces. |
Question: | How often do you need to change the food |
Answer: | For me, it depends on the time on the time of year you are feeding. When the weather is above 75 degrees, I usually let the food stay out only a day or so. I don’t fill the feeder very full so as not to waste food. When it is cooler, I let the food stay out 3-4 days. I always clean the feeder with soap and water before refilling. My hummers have been very healthy. I see the same ones every day. Good luck feeding your hummers. They are quite entertaining! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this different from making a simple sugar from store bought, run of the mill, highly refined, white sugar+H20??? It's sucrose...sugar |
Answer: | It's 100% natural sucrose, not sure how store sugar would compare to that. I swear by it, I get more birds with this than I have ever had before. I'll never use the red stuff again. |
Question: | How much nectar does this produce? Or put another way, how much water do I mix with each ounce of this concentrate |
Answer: | You mix 4 oz of powder nectar with 2 cups of cold water, it works very well and the hummers love it. Don't mix too much at a time though, it will only last about 3-4 days, then it begins to get cloudy and goes bad. When the hummers are heavy in our area, 2 cups in our hummingbird feeder will last about 3 or 4 days. |
Question: | Sucrose is a fancy name for sugar, will less than 0.01% of protein what's the difference between that and supermarket sugar |
Answer: | The difference is price and sometimes added colorings or preservatives. Please people stop wasting your hard earned dollars on any pre made sugar water (nectar). So simple and easy, time is not an excuse. Simply put your water in a pot or kettle bring to boil and pour it into mason jar or other vessel with your measured granulated white sugar and wait until it cools. Refrigerate remaining nectar for up to a week. In a pinch and don't have any pre made in the fridge just dissolve regular sugar in warm water then add cold water to cool it. Simple and easy for all. |
Question: | Hummingbirds need more than sugar. Do these contain needed electrolyts? Read about hummingbird needs |
Answer: | All OFFICIAL sources on Hummingbirds state this: Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (for example, 1 cup of sugar with 4 cups of water) until the sugar is dissolved. Do not add red dye. Do NOT use brown sugar or honey. |
