9 best hummingbird food mix
Hummingbird food mix, also known as hummingbird nectar, is a special type of food designed to attract and provide essential nutrients for hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds known for their rapid wing beats and ability to hover in mid-air. They have a high metabolism and need to consume a significant amount of food each day to sustain their energy levels.
The primary components of hummingbird food mix include sugar and water. The ideal ratio for preparing hummingbird nectar is typically four parts water to one part sugar. The sugar acts as a source of energy for the birds, while the water helps keep them hydrated.
It's important to use plain, white granulated sugar when making hummingbird nectar. Avoid using honey, brown sugar, or artificial sweeteners, as these can be harmful to hummingbirds. Additionally, it's essential to never use red food coloring, as it can be harmful to the birds.
To prepare hummingbird food mix, simply dissolve the sugar in water by stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Boiling the water can help ensure the sugar is fully dissolved and helps to remove any impurities in the water. Allow the mixture to cool before filling hummingbird feeders.
Cleanliness and hygiene are crucial when preparing hummingbird food. Make sure to clean and refill feeders regularly to prevent mold, bacteria, and other contaminants that could harm the hummingbirds.
Providing a consistent and reliable source of hummingbird food can attract these beautiful birds to your backyard, allowing you to enjoy their presence and observe their fascinating behaviors. Additionally, adding features like feeders, flowers, and other outdoor decor can enhance your backyard's appeal to hummingbirds and other wildlife.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hay que refrigerarlo luego te preparado |
Answer: | Once mixed, unused nectar should be refrigerated. |
Question: | What can you use in a outside feeder so the water will not freeze |
Answer: | This is Texas. Hummingbird’s arrive in May and leave 1st cold snap in October. Water barely freezes in Dec/Jan. It’s 73 out right now. |
Question: | Does this product have expiration date |
Answer: | I don't know about an expiration date. I dumped it in a baggie and labeled it. However I will let you know that I didn't get any hummingbirds with this mixture but after making my own I had quite a few everyday. 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water, bring to boil for 2 minutes and then let cool. Store leftovers in the refrigerator. I just adjusted the quantities and made enough for 2 feeders. |
Question: | What makes it red? I have heard that when making your own hummingbird nectar, that you should forego putting food coloring in it |
Answer: | Please don't buy anything with artificial red color. The Audubon Society recommends making your own with regular sugar. 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. (1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup boiling water). |

A Hummingbirds' diet consists of insects and floral nectar, which contain a micronutrient. Feeder Fresh Nectar Defender contains this micronutrient, which Hummingbirds naturally consume in their daily diet and is something they must have for their normal growth and development. The micronutrient has been proven to be safe for hummingbirds in long term studies of hummingbirds’ diet, as conducted by University of California Avian Scientists. The amount of micronutrient used in Nectar Defender is below the level tested in long term studies and below the level recommended by the AAV. The safety of Naturally Fresh has been approved by University Avian Experts. Health and safety is critical to the team at Sapphire Labs. It is the primary reason for designing our birding products. User questions & answers
Question: | What are the ingredients in this product? Does it have any additional vitamins or calcium in addition to the micro copper |
Answer: | As per the info on the bag. The ingredients are Pure Cane Sugar and Micro-nutrient copper. We cannot verify any other information. |
Question: | Is that artificial color |
Answer: | This is a clear all natural hummingbird nectar. There is no artificial coloring. |
Question: | The bag was broken when it arrived so i threw the bag away and put the powder in a container. now i no longer have the instructions. what is the ratio |
Answer: | For hummingbirds: 1 scoop nectar powder per 1 C water. For orioles, 1 scoop per 1-1/2 C water. Nectar stays fresh in feeder for up to 2 weeks, even in hot weather. Store extra nectar in fridge. |
Question: | What size is the scoop |
Answer: | approx 3 tbsp |
Question: | Why did we only receive one bottle |
Answer: | I ordered more than one item—I purchased six jars/bottles 14 oz each for the best price I could find. |
Question: | Is this for just 1 jar? I can get the exact same thing at my grocery store for |
Answer: | Yes, it's just 1 jar. If you can obtain the same product locally for $1.99, go for it. |
Question: | how many ounces of liquid nectar does this make |
Answer: | A 32-oz bottle makes approximately 128 oz. when mixed 3:1 according to label directions. I usually "eyeball" it rather than measure, hence the approximate number. Oops, this answer applies to the liquid nectar. The jar of powdered nectar is 12 oz. According to label, use 7 cups (56 oz.) of water to the entire jar of powder. I have never measured how many the actual number of ounces it produces. |
Question: | How often do you need to change the food |
Answer: | For me, it depends on the time on the time of year you are feeding. When the weather is above 75 degrees, I usually let the food stay out only a day or so. I don’t fill the feeder very full so as not to waste food. When it is cooler, I let the food stay out 3-4 days. I always clean the feeder with soap and water before refilling. My hummers have been very healthy. I see the same ones every day. Good luck feeding your hummers. They are quite entertaining! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this different from making a simple sugar from store bought, run of the mill, highly refined, white sugar+H20??? It's sucrose...sugar |
Answer: | It's 100% natural sucrose, not sure how store sugar would compare to that. I swear by it, I get more birds with this than I have ever had before. I'll never use the red stuff again. |
Question: | How much nectar does this produce? Or put another way, how much water do I mix with each ounce of this concentrate |
Answer: | You mix 4 oz of powder nectar with 2 cups of cold water, it works very well and the hummers love it. Don't mix too much at a time though, it will only last about 3-4 days, then it begins to get cloudy and goes bad. When the hummers are heavy in our area, 2 cups in our hummingbird feeder will last about 3 or 4 days. |
Question: | Sucrose is a fancy name for sugar, will less than 0.01% of protein what's the difference between that and supermarket sugar |
Answer: | The difference is price and sometimes added colorings or preservatives. Please people stop wasting your hard earned dollars on any pre made sugar water (nectar). So simple and easy, time is not an excuse. Simply put your water in a pot or kettle bring to boil and pour it into mason jar or other vessel with your measured granulated white sugar and wait until it cools. Refrigerate remaining nectar for up to a week. In a pinch and don't have any pre made in the fridge just dissolve regular sugar in warm water then add cold water to cool it. Simple and easy for all. |
Question: | Hummingbirds need more than sugar. Do these contain needed electrolyts? Read about hummingbird needs |
Answer: | All OFFICIAL sources on Hummingbirds state this: Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (for example, 1 cup of sugar with 4 cups of water) until the sugar is dissolved. Do not add red dye. Do NOT use brown sugar or honey. |

User questions & answers
Question: | So it doesn’t have to be red |
Answer: | The feeder or base of feeder itself should be red to attract them. the nectar is clear.. red dye or red additives are NOT GOOD for the hummers!!! |
Question: | Is there an analysis of the sugars, proteins & fats on the carton? How much protein & fat |
Answer: | On the carton it states: Crude protein: Not less than 0.01% - Crude Fat: Not less than 0.01%.Also, Crude Fiber: Not more than 0.01% - Total Sucrose/Dextrose 100% |
Question: | Is this just sugar |
Answer: | Yes, basically its just sugar. But is very convenient, more so then mixing your own at home yourself, unless your into that and the Hummers love it. But that being said, i wouldn't pay more that 10$ for a jar though. |
Question: | Does it just contain white sugar/sucrose, or is there added vitamins and minerials |
Answer: | It does not contain any vitamins or minerals. I just use plain sugar and water now (1 to 4 ratio) and my Hummers love it. |
Question: | What happened to the 96 ounce feeders! We go through 150# of sugar a month and small feeders are the pits |
Answer: | Wow, that's a lot of birds. I use 96 lbs of sugar in a month (peak season, before migration). I've seen one of those Perky Pet 96 ouncers, but can't find one to buy. I'd love that big one!!! |
Question: | How much sugar do you add for one filling of this feeder |
Answer: | I have been feeding hummingbirds for over 15 years. I have never boiled water. I have 15 feeders and go thru about 1.5 gallons of sugar water per day. All year round. For this size feeder add 1.5 cups sugar to 6 cups water. Stir well. |
Question: | can I buy a new plastic base for the Perky-Pet 209 as I broke mine |
Answer: | Sorry this is so late, since you asked clear back in February. In some of the one-star reviews, I've seen comments from Perky-Pet. They advise calling them: "do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973)." They might be able to help you get parts, or replace them if you were under the one-year warrantee. |
Question: | They all leak and have to be sealed with krazy glue. The connecting attachment at the base also breaks. I have had four of them |
Answer: | The Perky Pet 220 has leaks at the holes where the Humming Birds feed and need to be sealed. But that isn't the biggest problem with the 220. The plastics don't fit the theholders after they have been hanging for a while. I think I probable bought 9 of them from perky pet. I didn't bother to return about four of them because of this reason, I have them. That's not the worst of it I ordered about nine of the newest ones because they were glass and were always made of good quality instead the Holder falls from the glass as the plastic mold was not fitted correctly. That is why they are on sale. They never used to have this problem and now Perky Pet is trying to unload the inventory. The old glass feeders were great these are useless. I've been buying humming bird feeders from them for fifteen to twenty years. I would tell anyone to find another supplier. They don't care. I even called them and was told they were having trouble with them falling when filled with food . Kevin Curley |

User questions & answers
Question: | The analysis on the bottle sez 80% moisture, assuming that means water, so the feeder cannot be left outside in winter in the pacific nw |
Answer: | I leave my feeder outside in winter. I rotate them more frequently in winter, with ones I keep inside. Works for me. Hope this answer was helpful. |
Question: | how can hummies drink this out doors when the bottle says refrigerate? made me pause after i bought it. don't want to give them food poisoning. anyone |
Answer: | The nectar does have a preservative in it to help keep it fresh. Depending on how many birds you have coming to the feeders refrigeration after opening keeps it fresh for months, even over the winter if in higher latitudes. I'm in St. Louis and my feeders are in full sun so I only put enough in the feeders to last 10 - 14 days then clean rinse and refill. It was amazing how much more the birds liked the Kaytee clear nectar. I'll never use anything else. BTW if the nectar gets too old they will just stop feeding. |
Question: | How long does this stayed "good" after opening? I've tried other stuff that the birds seem to stop liking after it sits out for so long. thanks |
Answer: | I put mine in the fridge after opening. I fill my feeder as full as it will take & the birds feed until it's empty. It lasts just over a week & my hummers LOVE this stuff!!! I'm going to order a larger feeder to see if they demolish the additional food or if I'll have to cut back on how much I fill. I've got a feeling that I won't have to cut back! |
Question: | Does it have to be refrigerated after opening |
Answer: | Hi, Sam! Under storage, it states "Refrigerate After Opening." I always purchase the 64 oz container and have a special place for it in the refrigerator. The is such an outstanding product that making refrigerator room is such a small accomodation! Enjoy, Elaine Brown! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require refrigeration after opening |
Answer: | Once opened, we recommend storing this liquid nectar in the refrigerator. It can be good for up to one month after opening. |
Question: | Do I have to add boiling water to mix, or will tap water do |
Answer: | Simply mix with water! The water does not need to be boiled first. |
Question: | How often should the nectar mix be changed |
Answer: | If you live in very warm temps change nectar once a week if cooler temps 80 and under it can last for 2 weeks. I never fill feeders to Max so I don’t waste. |
Question: | Is it supposed to be this tarte versus sweet with a slight carbonated taste? That's how mine is? do they truly like it? or is it spoiled |
Answer: | I don't know. I have never tasted it. I did use this product for a while but this year switched to sugar water which I make myself. It is much more economical and the hummers do love my mix of 1 part sugar to 3 parts of water (do not add food coloring). |
