11 best wild bird food

Wild bird food, commonly known as birdseed, is a specialized type of food designed to attract and nourish wild birds in outdoor settings, such as gardens, backyards, and bird feeders. Bird enthusiasts often use bird food to create a welcoming environment for birds, promote biodiversity, and enjoy watching various bird species up close. Here are some key aspects related to wild bird food:

  1. Types of Bird Food:

    • Seed Mixes: Birdseed mixes typically contain a combination of seeds like sunflower seeds, millet, safflower seeds, and more. These are popular for attracting a wide variety of birds.
    • Suet: Suet is a high-energy food made from animal fat, often mixed with ingredients like seeds, nuts, and fruit. It's especially attractive to insect-eating birds like woodpeckers.
    • Nectar: Nectar feeders are designed to attract hummingbirds with a sugary liquid solution.
    • Mealworms: These are popular for attracting insect-eating birds like bluebirds, robins, and warblers.
    • Fruit: Birds like orioles and tanagers are attracted to fruits like oranges and grapes.
  2. Bird Feeders:

    • Bird food is typically placed in various types of bird feeders, including hanging feeders, platform feeders, tube feeders, and suet feeders. The choice of feeder depends on the types of birds you want to attract and your local bird species.
  3. Attracting Specific Birds:

    • Different bird species have varying dietary preferences. For instance, offering black oil sunflower seeds can attract cardinals, chickadees, and finches, while suet is favored by woodpeckers and nuthatches.
    • Researching the local bird species in your area can help you tailor your bird food offerings to attract specific birds.
  4. Seasonal Considerations:

    • Bird feeding needs can change with the seasons.During the winter, high-energy foods like suet and black oil sunflower seeds can help birds survive the cold. In the spring and summer, birds may require more protein-rich foods.
  5. Bird Feeding Etiquette:

    • Keep bird feeders clean to prevent the spread of diseases among birds.
    • Place feeders where birds have easy access but are safe from predators.
    • Monitor the feeders regularly to ensure a steady supply of food.
  6. Wildlife and Backyard Benefits:

    • Providing bird food can attract not only birds but also other wildlife to your backyard, creating a more biodiverse ecosystem.
    • Observing and identifying different bird species can be an enjoyable and educational hobby.
  7. Outdoor Decor and Garden Accessories:

    • Bird feeders and related accessories are often chosen to complement outdoor decor and landscaping.

In conclusion, wild bird food plays a crucial role in supporting local bird populations and enhancing outdoor spaces by attracting a variety of bird species. Selecting the right type of bird food and feeders can create a rewarding and enjoyable backyard birding experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Why has this price increased so dramatically
Answer: There were more sunflower seeds then red Milo in my bags. I have no idea what percentage of each seed is in the mix. My birds love this stuff! the doves love the sunflower seeds and the finches, orioles and other birds like this mix.
Question: How do i cancel this order
Answer: YES! it has sunflower seed, cracked corn and peanut pieces in addition to TEN other kinds of seed. I use squirrel proof feeders for the birds and seperate feeders for the squirrels with sunflower and peanuts and peanut butter. (which the birds eat too ) ALL of the birds here in central Virginia LOVE this blend and there is no waste.
Question: We are using this for a class project. i checked the ingredient list, but wanted to make sure... this is nut free, correct
Answer: I just called Wagner customer service (516-933-6580) and asked whether the Greatest Variety product contains any artificial dyes. The rep said No, that their products do not have artificial dyes. She said that the red is the natural color of that particular seed. The red color is helpful in attracting birds.Update: Well, I received the birdfood and looked at the ingredients. The last ingredient item is "Artificial color."
Question: Does this seed cause crazy grass growth where the seed falls
Answer: I've never deliberatly planted these seeds, this product is for feeding wild birds and is a very good mix. that said, birds and squirrels being who they are, some seed does get scattered on the ground and does sprout, I've had a few sunflowers come up and bloom, but most is just grassy stuff, I don't think you can plan on a crop

User questions & answers

Question: are there real cherries in this bird food
Answer: You might want to look at this before deciding to buy BPA-Free anything. The Scary New Evidence on BPA-Free Plastics http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/03/tritan-certichem-eastman-bpa-free-plastic-safe
Question: I like to use organic products-is there any dye in the proct & what is the cherry flavor made from
Answer: Yes, when first. Taken. I wipe outside with a tissue and no more sweat. It appears it sweats when it is first introduced to the room termed. I hope this helps you. I have MS, which means many challenges and I say again.....this bottle is my favorite one and I have many kinds/types of bottles My next favorite bottle is made by Rubbermaid.
Question: Is this really the same exact bag that home depot has except for home depot is selling it as a 40 lb bag for
Answer: After trying to get a replacement O-ring from Contigo (they'll only send a whole new lid which seems wasteful) I decided that it would be worth trying to make some. So here's the method: Food grade silicone. You'll need a coin just a bit bigger than a $1 coin (or put some masking tape around the edges of the coin and cut down to height), wash the coin. Get two piece of wood and cover with plastic wrap. Get coins of different denominations as spacers for the height (I experimented with the ones I had on hand, 8 dimes should work). Place the 1$ coin in the center, and squeeze some silicone all the way around it. Stack the two dimes in each corner and then place the second piece of wood on top. Clamp and let dry. When it's dry cut out the outer edge of the circle with a pair of sharp scissors. Use the previous ring as a guide. I've made about 10 so far since these water bottles are fantastic but the ring gets really gross really fast, the handmade silicone ones seem to last much longer without getting nasty and gunky.
Question: What is the cherry flavor? Sounds artificial and not healthy for wild birds
Answer: I have NEVER had it open and I carried in a book bag on wheels. After a after a year I had to make sure it snapped shut. But I love this bottle so much I just bought two more !

  • Pleasant cherry aroma attracts wild birds

User questions & answers

Question: What size is correct? is it for one - 2.5 lb bag? six - 5 lb bags or ? one 20 lb. bag, or something else? this ad is confusing and not clear
Answer: If you provide a "squirrel feeder" as someone suggested, the only thing that will happen is you will get even more squirrels in your yard, which is fine if you don't mind feeding them. But the only way to prevent them from dining at your other feeders is to hang the feeders from hooks and put on a squirrel baffle on the pole. I have 4 bird stations in my yard and I've used Wild Birds Unlimited equipment for all of them - after 10 years of fighting the squirrels, this is the only thing that has worked. 5 years now with the baffles and they work great. Just follow the mounting height directions (think it's 3' from the ground) or they can easily jump over it. And make sure your poles are not near any trees or other structures from which the squirrels can climb and jump to the feeders.
Question: I don't understand the q & a noted for this product. a customer asks if this for 6 5lb. bags. sav answers yes but it states it is 1 5lb. bag. huh
Answer: Does not come with seed.
Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: I do not know anything about that. I just know if it for outside use it will rust quickly.
Question: Do you have a 20 # bag of Kaytee nut and fruit
Answer: This product is probably mislabeled. I used it on my duck coop and two days later it rusted. Obviously NOT galvanized. They probably think zinc plating is the same as galvanized, who knows. If you look at the picture it did look silver, but I went with the write up. This is not the product for outdoor use, that's for sure.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this 100% black oil sunflower seed? I noticed that the description fails to mention this while the description of the previous model does
Answer: It can be hung or mounted.
Question: What is the expiration of this bird feed? Will it keep to Christmas
Answer: Yes they could. They like black oil sunflower seeds. Another feeder type you could look into is a suet feeder. Woodpeckers love suet cakes!
Question: How can a 20 lb bag (description) have an 18 lb shipping weight (details
Answer: Bent does not sound like how mine is, an oval as pictured in the product description. And it is just like my first one of these feeders.
Question: Why does Wagner's 25-pound bag cost $25 and this 40-pound bag cost
Answer: As of September 2018, the feeders Amazon sends have a redesigned base. The bottom is no longer just cast metal. It is now plastic and cast metal. Also, if you use the threaded part of the bottom, to attach to a pole or for a tray, it is now just a single thread, not threaded several turns. It does not hold well. I do not like the redesigned base at all.

User questions & answers

Question: Which blend is best to attract Cardinals
Answer: Don't think so. It is an essence of cherry . The birds love this food and I suspect the deer love it too.
Question: I am wondering about how many cups of seed are in a 8 lb bag
Answer: There was no cherry flavor at all in the bag I received. Also, the birds refused to eat it.
Question: Southen california, san diego county, near coast. which seed is best for my area
Answer: Not sure. I haven't seen it at our local Home Depot store.
Question: I'm in southern california, the mountains above san diego to be exact, should i buy the western regional blend or the southwest regional blend
Answer: I'm from southern CT. The birds here go crazy for this seed. Tried black oil seed. Not as popular and would sometimes clog the feeder. This has a variety of seed sizes which allow the seeds to drop freely. Dont know if this is organic, dont know about gmo. All I know is some 20lb bags go for $40-$50 and the birds here love this blend. If its cherry oil who cares, the birds dont. I took a survey lol.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this bird seed sprout under the feeders
Answer: I haven't used that seed since 2017. There is always a chance for seeds to sprout if there are no birds or squirrel to clean it up on the ground. Sometimes this also can happen if the birds don't like all the seed.
Question: what are all seeds included
Answer: I really couldn’t tell you all the seeds . The main reason I purchase this seed was because it had black sun flower seed.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this blend contain milo
Answer: I had some on the ground around the feeder and did see the mallards eating it.
Question: is this bird food no mess, will it grow weeds in the lawn
Answer: I do not have weeds under my tray feeder. However, I only put a handful of seeds in the tray feeder once a day. The birds usually eat all the seed - if seeds drop on the ground they are eaten by the birds.
Question: Do black birds like songbird feed
Answer: Covid19
Question: always been happy with this product, but my last two bags have had twigs and corn in them. Have you changed the recipe to add filler
Answer: Yes it is cleaned. However, we recommend that our seed is used for Wild Bird Feeding only and not pet birds.

FAQ's

Make sure that your feeder is close to natural shelter such as trees and shrubs to provide protection for your birds, but be careful not to make it too convenient for squirrels. Also, place it in a location so that you can enjoy watching the activities of your feathered friends.

User questions & answers

Question: Can chickens eat this
Answer: Chickens can and will eat this. But it is formulated for Wild Birds. Not chickens. You can give this as a treat not as their daily feed. Thanks! Stay Healthy!
Question: i just throw nuts and fruit blend on my deck will this leave shells and a mess
Answer: Yes, but just throw seed, preferably black sunflower seeds, on ground that is reasonably clear. Birds have no problem finding it.
Question: What kind of feeder is best? We have a squirrel-proof tube feeder - all feeding holes are at the bottom. Will that work
Answer: This mix looked and smelled so good that I wanted to snack on it. It has whole peanuts and raisins in it so it might better in a flat feeder or one with large feeding holes.
Question: Are all the seeds hulled? Will there be shells thrown to the ground
Answer: The sunflower seeds are not hulled, so you will indeed have the husks on the ground. We have a flock of about 40 wild parrots that go nuts for this mix...(we live in Miami so flocks of parrots aren't unusual) along with the usual diners including cardinals, jays, orioles, etc. This is a high quality product - but as I said, there is waste on the ground.

Unique Features In Advanced and Less Mess Formulas

For many years, wild bird food products were grown under more natural conditions. Today's modern farming techniques require the use of hybrids for expanded production and resistance to mold, fungus, and drought. These hybrids often lack key nutrients needed by birds for health, growth, and reproduction.

Wild Delight Advanced Formula products have been formulated with added nutrients to help ensure that birds and other wildlife maintain high levels of health. The nutrients in the points listed are added to every Wild Delight Advanced Formula.

Fruit For Wild Birds

Birds will eat fruit. It is always best to use dried fruit in feeders to prevent mold and bacteria. Read the label, flavorings are often used and provide no real benefit for the birds.

The following Wild Delight products contain real fruit: Cardinal Food, Fruit N' Berry, Less Mess Cardinal Food, Less Mess Fruit N' Berry, Less Mess Songbird Food, Nut N' Berry, Songbird Food, Zero-Waste Fruit Blend

Seriously, I checked the grains and they are full and fresh in the shell each time I bought them, and as long as the product remains this way, I will keep on buying it.
