10 best suet bird food
Suet bird food is a popular and nutritious option for backyard bird feeding. It's made from the hard fat found around the kidneys and loins of cattle and sheep, and it's an excellent source of energy for birds, especially during the colder months.Suet is often used in the form of cakes or blocks and is typically mixed with various ingredients to create different suet bird food varieties. Here are some key points about suet bird food:
Nutrient-Rich: Suet is high in calories and provides birds with essential fats, which are crucial for their energy needs, especially in winter when other food sources may be scarce.
Attracts a Variety of Birds: Suet is particularly attractive to insect-eating birds like woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and titmice. It can also attract other species such as jays, sparrows, and wrens.
Different Varieties: Suet bird food comes in various formulations. Some suet cakes contain added ingredients like seeds, berries, fruit, insects, or mealworms to cater to different bird species' preferences.
Feeder Types: Suet can be offered in specialized suet feeders, which are designed to hold suet cakes securely. These feeders often have wire cages or mesh to prevent squirrels and other larger animals from stealing the suet.
Year-Round Feeding: While suet is commonly associated with winter feeding, it can be provided year-round. In colder months, it helps birds maintain their body heat, and during breeding seasons, it provides essential nutrients for nestlings.
Suet Quality: It's essential to choose high-quality suet that is free from preservatives or artificial additives. Fresh suet is more attractive to birds.
Storage: Suet can become rancid in warm weather, so it's crucial to store it in a cool, dry place or even in the freezer to extend its shelf life.
Easy to Make: Many bird enthusiasts enjoy making their suet bird food by melting suet and mixing it with ingredients like seeds, nuts, and fruits. Homemade suet can be a cost-effective and customizable option.
Suet bird food is a valuable addition to your backyard bird feeding setup, providing essential energy and nutrition to a wide range of bird species. By offering suet in different formulations, you can attract a diverse array of feathered visitors to your garden, enhancing your backyard birding experience and supporting local wildlife.

Question: | can you make your own suet blocks yo fit your own birdhouse with whst kind of mold |
Answer: | Expiration date is 09/2020 |
Question: | how many cakes are in this box |
Answer: | Yes. Mine had no problems |
Question: | Do these have an expiration date? Thanks |
Answer: | As shown in the product title and description, you will receive 6 ounces total. It will come in 2 separate bags, each bag is 3 ounces / 85 grams. We apologize for any confusion and hope this information helps! |
Question: | Exactly what kind of birds are blended in to it |
Answer: | I have ordered B01MAYHEZZ five times. Four times (Amazon LLC, Gatzies, Kwik Retail, and Unique Discounts) the order was fulfilled with a shipment of one package containing four 2.5oz packets totaling 10 oz. One time, the last time, Fat Happy Pets, fulfilled the shipment and shipped one package of 2.5oz. They claim the picture shows one 2.5oz package and the catalog is wrong with someone typing in 10oz incorrectly. One 2.5oz package is B002UIX3CM not B01MAYHEZZ. One 2.5oz package is about $3 to $4 not $9 to $11. Moral of this story: check who the fulfiller is. Let's hope Big Ohio currently fulfilling B01MAYHEZZ will understand B01MAYHEZZ is not B002UIX3CM. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I have to keep the unopened packages refirgerated |
Answer: | My bag says papaya. I looked up pawpaw and it said that pawpaw is what it is called in Australia and some partsof the Caribbean. I could not figure out if there was a taste difference or just a name difference. Sometimes it seemed to be used interchangeably. One place it says "dried diced papaya 2lb bulk bag dehydrated pawpaw tree; papaya cubes for snacking. That does not make much sense to me. But the bag I had said papaya. It was the first time I ever had any and I just did not seem to get much of any flavor at all. I don't know why. It looks beautiful. Marie Kanning |

Our New and Improved Clean Easy Open Packaging
Our Suet Cakes are wrapped in a "candy bar" wrapper! This means there is less mess and less waste than the old traditional trays.
The Old Messy Trays
The trays are messy, require tools like scissors or knives and sometimes you even have to use your hands to get the suet out!
Less Packaging equals Less Waste
Our Packaging is 100% recyclable and there is just plain less of it. We use 80% less packaging by weight. This means that there is less in the landfill and more going back to be reused again and again.
Waste
The tray is an outdated and inefficient use of materials. Not only is the packaging larger than our wrapper and going to the landfill, but also the suet sticks to the tray! This means more for the garbage and less for the birds!

User questions & answers
Question: | What happens if this gets rain on it |
Answer: | Aside from suet, there are a number of different ingredients, including bits of seed, insect parts, and a number of other ingredients depending upon which version you buy. All I know is that every type of bird that visits my feeders absolutely loves it, once they try it. I have a hard time keeping up. |
Question: | Has anyone seen doves eating these |
Answer: | These are semi hard 'cakes' or blocks measuring 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 X 1 1/4 inches. If you tried to roll them they would just break into greasy crumbles. |
Question: | Are the ingredients from the US |
Answer: | This is a valid question. Cold weather feeding requires protein approximately 4-13%, as well as fat, suet is designed to offer high energy nutrition, especially valuable in cold weather. The higher the protein content, the better. I have yet to see a vendor listing the protein analysis. How much protein is in this product? |
Question: | Can someone list the ingredients in this suet? Thanks |
Answer: | My cakes never lasted that long, what with blue jays and blackbirds, but now that the blackbirds are gone mold has appeared on one side of the cake. I'm unsure of the timeline, but it is a problem I never had with a different brand of suet cakes. I may go back to the other, even though they are significantly more expensive. But perhaps the colder weather will solve the problem for me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has the quality improved from what was being shipped in early |
Answer: | The suet blocks that come prepackaged are somewhat soft and probably could be reshaped. It would be messy but doable. I use a simple wire basket that I purchased and they fit into it nicely. The birds hang on it and peck away. |
Question: | Is this really “no melt,” no matter the summer heat? What about triple digit temps in Arizona |
Answer: | There were 12 cakes in the box. Please note, that as per my review, even though the price was right, the birds did not like this product. It sat for days and not eaten. I think there are better choices on the market. |
Question: | Where do i place the suet |
Answer: | I haven't seen an expiry date on them. However, I threw out 3 bars (another brand mark you) because the birds weren't touching it. When I smelled it, both my wife and I thought it was off. Now, these are a few years old as they were sitting in my garage. |
Question: | How long is the storage shelf life of these suet cakes |
Answer: | There's a description of which seeds & grains are in it in the ingredients for the product. I notice some are saying it melts. I have used this for about a year now, in Orange County, Southern CA & we got into triple digits several times this summer and it never 'melted'. Mine usually last anywhere from a day or two to 4 days. The hotter weather kind of slows them down. I was thinking they were going so fast due to the squirrels, but found it was the wrens, junkos, woodpeckers, orioles & others in their seasons here that love it & the squirrels weren't able to reach it. Good product - not sure why others were saying it melted, perhaps they should contact the manufacturer? |

User questions & answers
Question: | The description says 6pack, but I am skeptical that it’s less than $10 for 6 bags. Is the price for 1 bag or |
Answer: | I receive a 6-bag carton for I think $29 including shipping--that would be between $4 and $5 per bag, if I'm figuring correctly. |
Question: | Would this work in a Squirrel Buster 1057 mixed with seed or would I need a special feeder |
Answer: | I'm not sure what that feeder looks like, but I purchased this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0061O2O8K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it works well. The pellets are about 1/4" dia. or slightly larger. Squirrels don't get in this one. Neither do raccoons. |
Question: | Why arent there any birds at my feeder :-( i had woodpeckers at my old one and there are none at this one. Been up for 3 days |
Answer: | The chickadees, juncos and jays are the birds frequenting my nugget feeder. Can't say I've ever had woodpeckers visit this particular feeder even though they are in the neighborhood. |
Question: | On this item or the ones that sell for $5-6 there is no weight listed. How do I figure out weather spending 5 times is worth it |
Answer: | This is the same bag you'd buy in retail. It will fill one standard metal tube (11" x 2 1/2") with a little bit left over. This product is carried at Meijer seasonally and is often on sale for under $3. Problem is that it's seasonal in the retail setting. Honestly, though, spending $5-6 per bag for 27 oz is way out of line for what you get. I'd seriously look at alternatives that were more cost effective than this deal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this contain seeds with shells?Heard they could be bad as birds swallow suet&seed too fast w shells still on so I'm looking for shell free suet |
Answer: | I am not sure where you live North East ? Tropical island ?. Depending on where you store the unopened packages (you have unopened packages ????) it is not generally necessary to keep them refrigerated |
Question: | So are there actually any real berries in these |
Answer: | All the same suet in the box as is listed on the box |
Question: | Totally confused! How many suet cakes come with the order??? 1 or 12. Big difference when pricing value |
Answer: | I use it here in Cleveland, OH in the Winter with no difference during warmer weather. Good for all seasons. |
Question: | Are there any artificial ingredients? Many of the cakes have artificial dyes |
Answer: | I bought this thinking it was something I previously purchased. The birds did not eat at first and it seems to be a bit firmer but, I had to use 1/2 and 1/2 of two different cakes. It does attract a different type of bird though. I don't have the little finches eating this as much because I think it is not as sweet as the other. My suggestion would be to use 1/2 and 1/2 of a different cake in the same feeder. They will start to eat it too! Good luck!! |

Question: | Would you consider recyclable packaging? I'm sure many others would have this strong preference, too! Thank you |
Answer: | Absolutely, both morning doves and white winged doves. They learn to stand on top of the woodpecker feeder bend over the side. Always gone in about 24 hours. Gila woodies and all the little birds love it and easy to feed to their young because it sticks to beaks. OK in 115 degree heat in Phoenix. |
Question: | where is this manufactured |
Answer: | The only information on the box indicates that they are manufactured by Wildlife Sciences, Chaska MN, so I would guess the ingredients are from the U.S. |
Question: | what are the ingredients |
Answer: | Rendered Beef Suet, Cracked Corn, Millet, Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, Processed Grain By-Products. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there something to put this in |
Answer: | Don't see why not...squirrels and other rodents eat them...no problem. |
Question: | How did this get expensive? Is was $7.43 last week |
Answer: | The birds at our feeder wouldn't eat this bird seed. I can't recommend it, sorry. I'd look for a better bird seed for your cockatiel. |
Question: | Why did these 6oz cakes more than double in price |
Answer: | The bag does not specifically state they are organic or GMO free. But the ingredients read one thing, striped sunflower seed. No "other ingredients". My Cardinals say they are great. One would believe they are organic. I don't have any idea why they would need GMO added to them. You can call them at 800 Kaytee 1 or email [email protected] and ask them. |
Question: | what feeders does this fit? It is way too big for a standard suet cake feeder |
Answer: | Yes, Kaytee is a USA company founded in 1866, they use domestically grown seeds that are packed in Wisconsin. |
