12 best cheap bird seed

Cheap bird seed, also known as budget-friendly bird seed, is a type of bird food that is typically more affordable than premium or specialized bird seed blends. It is a popular choice for backyard birding enthusiasts who want to attract a variety of wild birds to their outdoor spaces without breaking the bank. Here are some key points to know about cheap bird seed:

  1. Seed Types: Cheap bird seed often contains common bird food ingredients, such as sunflower seeds, millet, cracked corn, and wheat. These ingredients are readily available and less expensive than some premium options.

  2. Attracts Common Birds: While cheap bird seed may not attract some of the more exotic or specialized bird species, it is effective at attracting common backyard birds like sparrows, finches, chickadees, and jays.

  3. Quality Varies: The quality of cheap bird seed can vary from brand to brand and bag to bag. Some may contain more filler material or lower-quality seeds, which may result in more waste and fewer birds visiting your feeders.

  4. Storage: Proper storage is essential to prevent the bird seed from spoiling or attracting pests. Store it in a cool, dry place in an airtight container to maintain its freshness.

  5. Feeder Selection: Consider the type of bird feeders you have when using cheap bird seed. Some feeders are designed for specific types of seeds or birds, so make sure your feeder is suitable for the seed blend you choose.

  6. Supplementary Foods: To attract a wider variety of birds and provide additional nutrition, you can complement cheap bird seed with other foods like suet, mealworms, or nectar for hummingbirds.

  7. Seasonal Changes: The types of birds that visit your feeders may change with the seasons, so you might want to adjust your bird seed offerings accordingly. For example, offering nyjer seed can attract finches in the winter, while suet may be more appealing during colder months.

  8. Maintenance: Regularly clean your bird feeders and replenish the seed to keep them inviting to birds. This helps prevent the spread of disease and ensures a consistent food source.

In summary, cheap bird seed is an economical option for attracting a variety of common backyard birds to your outdoor space. While it may not offer the same diversity as premium blends, it can be a cost-effective way to enjoy birdwatching and support local wildlife. Proper storage and maintenance are key to its effectiveness and appeal to birds.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you store this outdoors? During a NY winter especially
Answer: I live in southern New York and I store Wagner's Greatest Variety Blend in a metal garbage can with secure lid outdoors all winter long, and the seed is just fine. I tried the heavy duty plastic/rubber (?) garbage container but the raccoons and other critters eventually managed to chew through it.
Question: Went to purchase again I paid $7.98, why is the price at $17.98 now for 10 pound bag
Answer: I paid $6.84 for this, last week. Its close to $11 this week.
Question: I have the concern regard the pink artificial colour that in the content, is it safe for feeding birds
Answer: I question the necessity of dye in the bird seed too and am not sure of it's safety but we are getting large flocks of all kinds of small birds that are feeding on it heavily. It seems more popular with the birds than another brand that I've put out.
Question: I paid $6.84 for this, last week. It's close to $11 this week. Why
Answer: I have been buying this bird seed for several months now getting a shipment every 2-3 weeks and always have paid around $11. I did notice about a week or two ago the price was almost $17 and I refused to buy it then. Waited to the price dropped again before purchasing.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this seed irradiated to prevent sprouting? That also renders the seed useless for food value, I've heard
Answer: Good question. I don't know whether the seed is treated that way, because the birds eat it so quickly (and there is no waste) that the seed has no time to sprout.
Question: Where is this made
Answer: Hi there! This is made in Chilton, Wisconsin.
Question: Is this bird seed mix entirely pesticide free? This is a very important concern
Answer: As far as I know, yes, it is entirely pesticide free... Maybe call the manufacturer to know for sure.
Question: I want a birdseed that won't attract bees. The one I have now is full of bees
Answer: I don't know what state you live in, but out in California, bees are only attracted to flowers and things which contain pollen. This seed contains no pollen or sugar, so that shouldn't be an issue.

User questions & answers

Question: Anyone know diff. between "indigo bunting" and the "blue finch
Answer: The blue finch is only found in Brazil.
Question: is nyger seed low-waste? Like, will the shells or remnants leave a mess
Answer: It does leave waste but it is not as much as with other seeds, like sunflower shells. If you have your feeder on a solid ground or with woodchips, you will notice some mess. If you have it in the grass or in a garden with dirt, you will hardly notice anything.
Question: how long is the seed good to put out
Answer: To be honest our goldfinches have been consuming these seeds at such a high rate, that the issue of how long they are good for has never been a concern. We have used the entire bag in less than a month
Question: I know that this seed can go bad if not used within a certain amount of time. Can it be frozen to keep it's freshness
Answer: Actually, the local Wild Birds store recommends freezing nyger seed to keep it fresh. I've done this for years with no problems. The most important thing with nyger is to keep it fresh. In my experience the birds refuse stale food, which never happens after it's been frozen.

User questions & answers

Question: Are they salted
Answer: Not sure what a seed hoop is. We inserted our old "not squirrel proof" feeder in the hole on top of this pole feeder and for a few years now no squirrels have succeeded in getting to the food. Very easy to put this up in our very hard clay soil.
Question: Description says this seed mixture attracts squirrels and small animals but the directions say for feeding wild birds only. Which is it
Answer: After installation the bird feeder section is about 6 feet from the ground. If you get the complete package there should be no need for any extension pole. There will be a need for money, as I get as many as 6 birds feeding at once resulting in one 20 lb bag of feed needed every 2 or 3 days!
Question: Would this be good to feed squirrels and birds? I'm looking for something that can actually work for both of them
Answer: Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am - 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds, not squirrels!
Question: What are the ingredients in this
Answer: Hello - This is indeed yellow. We will review the website description, thanks for the feedback. Thank you!

  • Attracts A Wide Variety Of Native Song Birds To Your Yard
  • Pleasant cherry aroma attracts wild birds

User questions & answers

Question: What size is correct? is it for one - 2.5 lb bag? six - 5 lb bags or ? one 20 lb. bag, or something else? this ad is confusing and not clear
Answer: If you provide a "squirrel feeder" as someone suggested, the only thing that will happen is you will get even more squirrels in your yard, which is fine if you don't mind feeding them. But the only way to prevent them from dining at your other feeders is to hang the feeders from hooks and put on a squirrel baffle on the pole. I have 4 bird stations in my yard and I've used Wild Birds Unlimited equipment for all of them - after 10 years of fighting the squirrels, this is the only thing that has worked. 5 years now with the baffles and they work great. Just follow the mounting height directions (think it's 3' from the ground) or they can easily jump over it. And make sure your poles are not near any trees or other structures from which the squirrels can climb and jump to the feeders.
Question: I don't understand the q & a noted for this product. a customer asks if this for 6 5lb. bags. sav answers yes but it states it is 1 5lb. bag. huh
Answer: Does not come with seed.
Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: I do not know anything about that. I just know if it for outside use it will rust quickly.
Question: Do you have a 20 # bag of Kaytee nut and fruit
Answer: This product is probably mislabeled. I used it on my duck coop and two days later it rusted. Obviously NOT galvanized. They probably think zinc plating is the same as galvanized, who knows. If you look at the picture it did look silver, but I went with the write up. This is not the product for outdoor use, that's for sure.

Question: Amazon said mine was delivered but it wasn’t. i was home when i got the message saying it was here. nothing. now what
Answer: The Kaytee Blueberry Yogurt Dipped Sunflowers are intended for birds such as Parrots, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, Conures and Cockatoos. Birds with smaller beaks such as Parakeets, Canaries, and Finches do not normally eat sunflower seeds.
Question: Will this product attract bluebirds
Answer: My African Gray and Senegal parrots love these! As long as your bird can eat sunflower seeds, these would be fine. They are coated with yogurt.
Question: What does Subcribe mean
Answer: Don't see why not, but might want to call the company to verify. It's a small bag & certainly wouldn't go very far feeding to wild birds.
Question: how long can this be stored before rot begins? [I live in an area where humidity & rain occur often.]
Answer: Yes! My boyfriend is about 5'10 and it fits him fine. It's pretty baggy.

User questions & answers

Question: Country of origin
Answer: Hello- what Millet did you used to buy? Our Millet prices have been extremely steady and have not increased more than 5% if at all. Prices only increase when freight and fees to us increase. Both have increased and we make every attempt to hold our prices steady. You can save that 5% by using the “Subscribe and Save” option when you make you purchase.
Question: Country of origin
Answer: Each millet plant has it's very own guard cat, trained to catch eat any birds that try to steal the millet. Or so the story goes...
Question: Are they raw
Answer: It all depends what kind of Parrots you have as to what kind of millet they will prefer. As a example my Cockatiels and even my African Grey Parrot prefer the larger sprays, it is easier to get to, to eat all of it. Smaller birds, like Parakeets and Finches, can get to millet that has tighter sprays that are smaller around millet, they have smaller beaks. Also personal taste just like us humans. Some birds may not even know what millet spray is as opposed to having it in bird food. If that is the case, then just one bird/Parrot eating millet will get the others curious, then they might try it as well. All birds can see colors, millet comes in all colors, brown, golden, golden brown, etc. As I said it can come down to personal taste. I run a personal Bird Sanctuary, for over 30 years now, I just lost my 35 year old Cockatiel, named Sunbird. So yes I am very informed about Parrots.
Question: Are they chemically processed? Were they grown with pesticide
Answer: If hamsters can have yogurt and sunflower seeds.... then I’m sure they’ll love these.... Sometimes in birds, this can cause them to be grumpy butts; so just watch out for that 🙃
