12 best big bird feeders
Big bird feeders are a popular type of outdoor equipment designed to attract and feed wild birds in residential settings, enhancing backyard birding and providing opportunities for bird enthusiasts to observe and enjoy various bird species. Here's what you should know about big bird feeders:
Size and Capacity: Big bird feeders are typically larger in size compared to standard feeders. They have larger seed reservoirs or feeding trays, allowing them to hold a greater quantity of bird food. This design minimizes the need for frequent refills, making them suitable for users who want to maintain a consistent bird feeding station.
Materials: These feeders are commonly made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and acrylic. The choice of material can impact the feeder's durability, appearance, and suitability for different weather conditions.
Types of Feeders: Big bird feeders come in various styles, including hopper feeders, platform feeders, tube feeders, and suet feeders. Each type is designed to accommodate specific types of bird food and attract different bird species. For example, suet feeders are ideal for attracting woodpeckers and nuthatches, while tube feeders are popular for dispensing seeds to smaller birds like finches.
Seed Variety: Bird enthusiasts can use big feeders to offer a variety of bird foods such as seeds, nuts, suet cakes, and fruit. Different bird species have distinct dietary preferences, so providing a range of foods can attract a diverse array of birds to your yard.
Mounting Options: These feeders can be hung from branches, mounted on poles, or attached to hooks or stands. The choice of mounting option depends on the feeder's design and the user's preference for placement in their outdoor space.
Protection from Predators: Some big bird feeders come with features designed to deter squirrels and other pests from accessing the bird food. These may include baffles, cages, or squirrel-proof mechanisms to protect the bird feed.
Easy Cleaning and Maintenance: Many big bird feeders are designed for easy cleaning and maintenance. Removable trays or compartments make it simpler to clean out old seeds and refill with fresh food.
Attracting Wildlife: In addition to birds, big bird feeders may attract other wildlife like squirrels, chipmunks, and even larger animals like raccoons. Some feeders are designed to be wildlife-resistant to prevent non-bird visitors.
Decorative Features: Some big bird feeders are designed not only to attract birds but also to enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor space. They may feature decorative elements, artistic designs, or be made to resemble traditional birdhouses.
Big bird feeders are a great addition to any backyard birding setup. They provide a convenient way to observe and appreciate the beauty of local bird species while contributing to their well-being by providing a reliable source of food, especially during the colder months when natural food sources may be scarce.

Need For Clerance
Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in./47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.
Weight Adjustable
The patented adjustable spring mechanism controls how much weight the metal mesh shroud will support, allowing the birds to feed. Any additional weight will activate the closing mechanism. Patent # 6,543,384 B2
Seed Ventilation System
Transparent seed tubes trap solar energy, and conventional seed tube designs block the escape of the heated air. Our patented Seed Ventilation System permits humidity and hot air to escape through the vents at the top of the feeder and replaces it with fresh air. Bird food remains fresher, attracting more wild birds.
Truly Squirrel-proof
The weight of an adult squirrel automatically closes the seed ports, denying access to the seed but not harming the squirrels in any way. Also effective on large birds.
No Tools Required
Our feeders are designed to be dismantled by hand into individual components without the use of tools. This allows for easy cleaning and filling.

User questions & answers
Question: | The black coupler was not included when this was shipped to me. who do i contact to have this shipped? the manufacturer contact info was incorrect |
Answer: | the # amazon gives you is incorrect 800-842-9825 is the # to call |
Question: | What is the max pole diameter your product will work for? Mine is maybe closer to |
Answer: | One and five-eighths is the exact diameter of the hole in the baffle, but you would have to be able to slide it on from the top or bottom of the pole after the baffle has already been hooked together. I say this because one side curves around on the top and the curves around on the bottom and you hook the two curved parts together like if you curved your fingers on both hands and then hooked your hands together. While squeezing the baffle in order to hook the two sides, the hole would actually become smaller than 1 5/8 during the squeezing process until they hook together and then will snap back so that the hole is again 1 5/8. So if you're pole is already in the ground and your bird feeder is attached to the pole in such a manner that it can't be removed or the pole can't be separated, you won't be able to attach this baffle. I don't know if I explained this very well, but hopefully, you get the idea. |
Question: | I have a 2 inch pole. Can the top be cut to enlarge it so it would work on my pole |
Answer: | Hi, Gary. When the baffle is closed, the opening at the top measures 1.5 inches. The support (which clamps to the pole and holds the baffle up) is not big enough to fit securely on a 2" pole. You might check with the manufacturer to see if they offer a different sized baffle set up. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Does the cone open up to wrap it around the pole or does it have to be slipped on over the top or bottom |
Answer: | It opens up to wrap around the pole. I was even able to wrap it around two poles that are side by side, giving me more hooks to hang bird feeders that are protected by the baffle. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much does the feeder weigh |
Answer: | Empty it weighs 2.36 pounds, filled with black oil sunflower seeds it weighs 4.30 pounds I see the description says it will hold 3.4 pounds of seeds. I am assuming that they are speaking of mixed bird seed. This product works exactly as described. Squirrels will swing from it occasionally. They tire of it very fast. |
Question: | what types of birds can feed from this model |
Answer: | We have Cardinals, Gold Finchs, House Finches, Purble Finches, Black cap Chickadees as well as a wide variety of other birds. The birds that you attract will largely depend on the feed that you use. I always use high quality feed and avoid the super market or any no name brand. I often mix my own blends such as black oil sunflower seed, safflower, and sunflower seed. I use this blend in a number of my feeders and find that it attracts a large variety of birds. Lately I have been using a quality blend that includes peanuts, sunflower kernels, safflower seeds, Pistachios, hulled pumpkin seeds and a variety of fruit pieces. This has been very well recieved by a number of birds so I continue its use. The point I am making is that to be successful in attracting birds a number of factors should be considered such as quality feed, quality feeders, clean feeders and locations that the birds feel safe to visit. This feeder is an outstanding feeder that is well made, easy to fill and clean and a joy to use. It is also enjoyable to watch the squirrels try and fail to get at the seed. I highly recommend any of the feeders from this brand. I have a number of different models from them and they all outperform other feeders. I think that you will be very pleased with your purchase and will enjoy many years of enjoyable use. |
Question: | what is it made of |
Answer: | an inner chamber holds the feed, with the holes for feeding lining up with the holes in the outer metal mesh covering. The Outer metal mesh covering is hung from a spring which, when weight greater than a bird or two is applied, pulls down and decorative metal leaves cover the feed holes from the obvious, far too heavy, intruder. It has solved our squirrel pilfering problem and cut our bird feed expenses by 2/3!! It really works. |
Question: | How do you fill the feeder without seed escaping through the feeder holes |
Answer: | I set the feeder down in the bag or bucket of seed so that the seeds that fall out of the holes simply fall back into the bag. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this manufactured |
Answer: | The perky pet birdhouses are made in China. Thanks! |
Question: | I read one review that said birds were scraping their heads on the metal and wonder if others have noticed this |
Answer: | I have never noticed anything like that. I love this bird house feeder. I have lots of birds eat from it without any problems. |
Question: | Will this work with Kaytee fruit and nut mix? I want the birds to be able to get the food out of the holes without it falling out on it's own |
Answer: | We recommend using only sunflower seeds or peanuts with this feeder. Depending on the size of the fruit and nut mix, it may be too large or too small for the holes in the feeder. |
Question: | Should I put the peanuts in whole, or chop them up? If whole, can they still get them out of the feeder? Thank YOU |
Answer: | While the peanuts should be shelled, they do not have to be chopped. Birds will be able to get the whole peanuts out through the holes. |

Product description
A favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird. They have easy to crack, thin shells and can be offered in a wide variety of feeder types, like platform, tube, and hopper feeders. These seeds also have a high fat content that is perfect for giving birds energy all year long, especially in winter.
This Yankee Flipper squirrel-proof feeder is the ultimate feeder for keeping your feathered friends fed, and the furred fiends hungry. Let's talk about the basics first. The sturdy polycarbonate feeding chamber is a whopping 4-3/4 inches in diameter and 21 inches long, giving you a break between refills--and ensuring that squirrels can't hang down from the top to reach seed. The four feeding chambers are easily accessible via the perch ring, and the interior of the chamber is designed to direct seed into the seed ports.
Now, for the fun stuff: The birdfeeder features an encased motor and rechargeable (and replaceable) batteries. When you receive the feeder, simply charge the batteries overnight, hang the feeder from its looped bail wire, and prepare to be amazed (and entertained!). The motor is connected to the weight activated perch ring--birds will not set it off, even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals. But the minute a squirrel hops onto the perch, the motor is triggered and the feeder begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown (gently) from the perch. It's a humanitarian way to deal with persistent squirrels--there are no shocks or poisons to hurt them, simply a wild ride that they won't be inclined to repeat. Birds are free to eat without disruption, and your family will get a kick out of watching squirrels go for their rides. There's a lifetime warranty on the feeder body and a one-year warranty on the motor and battery charger. --Ariel Meadow Stallings
- SQUIRREL-PROOF: The motorized perch ring is designed to start spinning under the weight of a squirrel to 'flip' the squirrel off the bird feeder
- CAPACITY: Tube bird feeder holds up to five pounds of birdseed and has four feeding ports
- DURABILITY: Bird feeder is constructed of heavy duty metal base and cap. The seed tube is UV-stabilized polycarbonate and won't fade
- INTERNAL BAFFLE: Internal baffle is desinged to keep seed flowing freely to all four seed ports
- MADE IN USA: Since 1969 all Droll Yankees products have been proudly made in the USA
User questions & answers
Question: | how do you remove the bottom to charge the unit |
Answer: | Hi Vickie. Holding the feeder upside down, turn the base counterclockwise. It will rotate slightly and then separate from the green piece that has the feeder holes in it. The charging receptacle is in the top of the post. Hope this helps. Ken |
Question: | Is this at all water-resistant? I live in Florida and we have a great deal of rainfall. This is a big investment to see ruined in the first storm |
Answer: | If there is going to be freezing rain or snow (unlikely in FL) or very heavy, windy rainfall, then it's recommended that you turn off the power (there is a switch right on the feeder). If it's really bad, you can pull out the core (the battery). You just twist the perch and the perch/core combo comes out. You also do this when you need to recharge it. You can leave the actual feeder outside--just remove the battery. Having said that, we are on our second Yankee Flipper after about 15 years with the first one! That first version had no ability to remove the core or turn off, and yet it still lasted that long through Chicago-area rain/snow/wind. The only reason we replaced it is that the battery would no longer charge. That's a really long time for something to work unfailingly! You can always buy a baffle to put over the top if you feel the need. They come in plexiglass, metal or plastic. Hope that helps. |
Question: | What do people think about all of the seed that falls out of the large feeding ports |
Answer: | If you check the actions of the birds on the feeders with your binoculars, studying them very carefully, I think you will find that most of the seed landing on the ground has been pitched out by the birds themselves and is not falling out of the feeder. I have watched this action myself. I think Mourning Doves are not well understood but they are actually quite beneficial to us. They eat all the weed seed they can find on the ground and it does not pass through their digestive systems to get deposited somewhere else. They consume grit, tiny sharp edged pieces of rock, that serve to grind up the seeds they eat the seeds thus turning the seed into energy for them rather than new weeds "for" us. I use one of these feeders myself with a tray attached underneath. The tray catches a high percentage of discarded seed and it is often eaten by other birds. A feeder tray pays for itself if you want to reduce your offerings to doves and squirrels. |
Question: | Not only do I have squirrels but I have a raccoon. Do you think this feeder will withstand the weight of a raccoon |
Answer: | I am not sure. It's a very sturdy feeder and squirrels are no problem as once the spinner threw them off they didn't try again. I would suppose that if the raccoons could get it on the ground, they could pry the lid off. You might try wiring the lid on, but they would probably roll it around on the ground until the seeds fell out. You might try suspending it from a small steel cable away from anything they could climb on to reach it. If the feeder remains hanging, I think you may have a chance of keeping them out. Sorry I am not more raccoon savvy, my daughter fights they all the time at her house because they kill her chickens. |

Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder
The Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper is a motorized bird feeder that allows birds to eat while preventing squirrels from getting a meal. When a squirrel hops onto the feeder's perch ring, the ring begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip.
The 17-inch seed tube holds 5 pounds of birdseed for fewer refills, and it has four seed ports for accommodating multiple birds. The tube feeder hangs by its stainless steel looped wire that reduces motion to prevent seed spill.
Squirrel-Proof Design
The Yankee Flipper features a perch ring that encourages birds to eat but prevents squirrels from feeding. The ring supports the weight of birds--even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals--but not squirrels. The weight of a squirrel triggers a motor that causes the perch to spin and the squirrel to lose its grip. To further repel squirrels, the feeder tube is designed to be too wide and long for them to cling to. Also, the heavy, snug-fitting metal cap cannot be lifted by squirrels, so they cannot reach seed inside the feeder.
Large Capacity
The Yankee Flipper can hold up to 5 pounds of birdseed, which means you don’t need to make frequent refills. An internal baffle keeps seed flowing to all four ports, and a large feeder perch allows multiple birds to feed simultaneously. The clear tube helps you keep track of seed levels.
Durable Construction
The Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder is designed for years of use. The durable seed tube is made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate that will not discolor over time, and the feeder's metal components are powder coated in a lovely forest green that will resist chipping and fading.
Seed Recommendations
A variety of birds use the Yankee Flipper, including cardinals, chickadees, finches, flickers, goldfinches, grackles, grosbeaks, jays, juncos, kinglets, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, starlings, titmice, towhees, woodpeckers, and wrens. The Flipper works with mixed seed, peanut chunks, safflower seed, sunflower kernels, and cracked corn, though it works best with sunflower seeds, a favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird.
Made in the USA
For more than 40 years, Droll Yankees has produced its bird feeders in New England, where American workers control the quality of the products and help improve Droll Yankees manufacturing standards.
Make a World of Difference
The act of hanging a bird feeder and keeping it clean and full can improve the chances that birds and their offspring will survive. Homes with bird feeders attract more birds and contribute to sustaining the local ecosystem. By building quality feeders and offering feeder replacement parts, Droll Yankees strives to keep its feeders in yard and out of landfills.

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this to clean? Does the bottom come off |
Answer: | Yes it doed Thanks |
Question: | Can it be Mounted |
Answer: | Pockets on the hips - as in picture. Mind - it has NO collar and veil is ONLY thin fabric - not ventilated mesh as pictured - was reason for me to look for different brand. If they would fix this collar issue and deliver proper veil it would be good suit, because overall fit was nice and comfortable. But lack of security around neck is NO GO for me. |
Question: | Can rain get into Cling and Catch Feeder that would soak seeds or thistle seed |
Answer: | Hi Please check the suit from inside if any label or any thread which could be pricking. Washing won't make any change, the material is very soft, are you using with any internal clothing? It is highly recomended to use a T-shirt inside. Thanks |
Question: | How come there are warning signs for cancer and reproductive damage with this feeder |
Answer: | It shouldn't be so tight that you can't move around - comfortable, like a onesie. With the lockdown, mine seems to be fitting a bit more snugly these days! :-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | After several years of great use, our post rusted at bottom and broke; can you buy replacement post |
Answer: | I have two of these. Hummingbirds love them. One to one sugar to water is the answer |
Question: | I need another pole as it is not long enough. Where would I get one |
Answer: | I own this exact model. I can NOT get the veil completely taken off. It has two zippers running opposite direction. U can unzip both but it will remain attached. I’ve tried several different attempts but it can not be completely removed like most other bee suits and veils |
Question: | does the baffle really prevent squirrels from reaching the feeders |
Answer: | No Velcro. It has very tight elastic that does good at leaving no room for entry. It does have a strap that goes around ur fingers that will keep the sleeves from sliding down. I was able to use regular size leather gloves. Even with heavy work for hours, no skin was exposed. The straps + strong elastic seemed to hold the sleeves in place |
Question: | Can the baffle adjust in height? I have long bird feeders that require the baffle to sit lower. Thanks |
Answer: | I've been wearing my jacket for an entire season and have never been stung anywhere. This material is amazing. Breathable in the Texas heat and impossible for bees to sting me. I love it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it deter chipmunks |
Answer: | No it does not deter chipmunks but I love this feeder. We placed a small baffle under feeders which solved the chipmunk issue. |
Question: | Male cardinals aren't using the perch. They just sit below the feeder eating off the ground. Female Cardinals use it. Any idea why |
Answer: | I have the same problem. Even with the optional Cardonal ring, they still won't use it. I think the feeding ports are too small for them to comfortably use. The fool proof way to prevent squirrels from eating your bird seed is to use Safflower seeds. They have all the nutrition of sunflower seeds, all varieties of sang birds love them (including woodpeckers) AND THE SQUIRRELS WILL NOT TOUCH THEM! I wish someone would have told me this before I spent $$$$ over the years trying to find a squirrel proof feeder. You can buy a 50 lb.. bag on Amazon for about $53 with free shipping. That comes out to about $1.06 a pound. Get an inexpensive feeder that cardinals will use and your problems are solved! |
Question: | How often will I have to refill this feeder on average if I have a fair number of birds in the area and what cost would that entail |
Answer: | Not trying to sound obvious, but it depends on the number and type of birds. My feeders in Houston draw Cardinals, Mockingbirds, Jays and Woodpeckers - hungry birds, plus lots of Sparrows and Carolina threshers. I have to refill the feeder about every 5 days with this crew. My feeder in Brenham also draws lots of birds, but smaller ones, and I only have to refill it every 7-8, sometimes 10 days. In the winter months, it will have to be refilled more often, of course. |
Question: | The tension doesn't seem to deter rats...I don't know if this can be adjusted...I feel bad for the birds...but I took the feeder down today |
Answer: | I have not had rats try to get the bird seed. I have had it for 3 years, the spring in the tension got loose after too many squirrel attempts. What I found is that the cardinal ring weighed it down and the birds could not get to the seed. The customer care sent me a new spring mechanism and it works great now, ring and all. |

How It works?
Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Squirrels and large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
The Closing Mechanism
Use the feeder with the factory setting before making any adjustments.
To increase the adjustment setting, rotate the transparent cartridge clockwise. The red line will move down from the previous setting. This increases the weight required to close access to the seed.
To decrease the adjustment setting, turn the cartridge counter clockwise. The red line will move up from the previous setting. This decreases the weight required to close access to the seed.
Where to Locate your Plus
You can locate this bird feeder anywhere and be squirrel free. Position it to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. Hang your Squirrel Buster Plus over a window, in a tree, on a deck, a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. Use brackets, extension hooks and tree hooks to hang your feeder at the recommended clearance. Hooks and brackets are available at birding stores, garden centers and hardware supply stores.
Need for Clearance
Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in/47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.
Taking apart your Plus
Squirrel Buster Plus components are designed to be assembled and dismantled easily by hand, without any tools.

User questions & answers
Question: | Picture shows bronze and says brown tones, however description below says pewter! Which is it? I want to replace my bronze one and it matters to me |
Answer: | No, it must be hung |
Question: | Is there a squirrel guard that fits this feeder? Something that fits over the top so they can't climb down from the roof onto it would be good |
Answer: | It does have a cover but...if it’s raining sideways...the seed does get a little wet. I usually take my feeders in at night so the bear and raccoon don’t get into them! |
Question: | how much seed does it hold |
Answer: | I can’t say for certain, but some states (I’m looking at you California) have laws in place that require manufacturers to place warning labels on any product that contains an ingredient or raw material that *might* cause cause cancer. Honestly. The law is so overly broad and many companies place labels on their products for liability reasons that I rarely pay attention anymore. I highly doubt that the product is dangerous. Neither my family nor my local bird population has lost a single member due to this product. I would buy it with a clear a mind. It’s a pretty decent product so far. |
Question: | Is this made in the United States |
Answer: | Not a lot, maybe 2 ounces. I have seen a house finch drink out of it. |
