10 best bat boxes plans

Bat boxes, also known as bat houses, are structures designed to provide shelter and habitat for bats. They are a great addition to your backyard for several reasons:

  1. Natural Pest Control: Bats are voracious insect-eaters. A single bat can consume hundreds of insects, including mosquitoes, in a single night. By installing a bat box, you can attract bats to your backyard, helping to naturally control insect populations.

  2. Conservation: Many bat species are in decline due to habitat loss and disease. Providing a safe and suitable roosting place can contribute to the conservation of these beneficial creatures.

  3. Educational Opportunity: Installing a bat box can provide an excellent educational opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about bats and their vital role in the ecosystem.

To build a bat box, you'll need the following materials and tools:

Materials:

  • Exterior-grade plywood or cedar boards (avoid treated wood)
  • Screws or nails
  • Mesh or grooved landing area for bats
  • Non-toxic paint or stain (optional)
  • Bat-friendly guidelines for box design (e.g., proper dimensions, ventilation)

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Screwdriver or hammer
  • Measuring tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Drill with a hole saw or paddle bit (for ventilation holes)

Here are some general steps to create a bat box:

  1. Choose a Design: You can find various bat box plans online, each tailored to different bat species. Select a plan that suits the species of bats in your area. Common designs include single-chamber and multi-chamber boxes.

  2. Cut and Assemble: Cut the wood pieces according to the plan's specifications. Assemble the box using screws or nails. Ensure that there are no gaps or cracks where drafts can enter.

  3. Ventilation Holes: Drill several small ventilation holes near the top of the box to prevent it from overheating.

  4. Landing Area: Attach a mesh or grooved landing area to the front of the box to help bats grip onto it.

  5. Paint or Stain (Optional): If you choose to paint or stain the box, use non-toxic, water-based products and allow them to dry completely before installation.

  6. Mounting: Place the bat box at least 10-15 feet above the ground on a tree, pole, or the side of a building. Ensure it receives several hours of sunlight each day, as bats prefer warmer roosting spots.

  7. Maintenance: Check the box periodically for signs of occupancy and clean it out as needed. Bat boxes may take some time to attract residents, so be patient.

Remember that attracting bats to your backyard is a long-term project, and it may take some time before bats start using the box.Additionally, it's essential to follow local regulations and guidelines when installing bat boxes to ensure you are promoting bat conservation responsibly.

    User questions & answers

Question: I would like to purchase this but need to ensure that it comes with instructions. Can you confirm
Answer: Yes it came with instructions. But basically try to hang on a house, tree or post, at least 12 feet off the ground, away from branches that predators could use. Away from bright lights and noise. Water like a pond or bird bath ideal nearby. Should get at least a few hours of sunlight, South or east facing ideal. They will defecate so keep that in mind... Look out Below.
Question: Can you post the instructions that came with the bat box
Answer: My apologies that your bat house didn't come with the instruction manual. There must have been an error in regards to the shipping process. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't allow me to post the PDF in this message or on the page. However, I would love to send you a copy of the instructions. To contact our team please go to the product listing on Amazon.com and click our company's name on the right-hand side that says 'Sold by Wildlife Seekers USA', then click the Ask a question button, go to Your Orders, find your order in the list, and click Contact Seller. This will allow us to email you your own copy of the instructions. We look forward to your reply. Warm regards, David
Question: Does it have groves or webbing
Answer: Thank you for your question. The bat house has grooves in the wood that allow for easy access and longevity as webbing can tear over time and injure bats if they get stuck.
Question: Is it too late in the season (Late June) to think the bats will move from the chimney to the bat house
Answer: Thank you for your question. Common bat species will be out of hibernation right now. Bats will often be on the lookout for suitable shelters when they forage at night. There is a good chance that the bats will quickly take up shelter in a correctly positioned bat house, especially if they are becoming agitated in the chimney.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is this made in the USA
Answer: Hi Red! Unfortunately not :( But we are an American family owned and run business! Hope that helps :)
Question: Is it correct that the 2 Chamber house isn't recommended for pole mount, due to it's smaller size
Answer: Hi there! Yes, I can confirm that all bat houses that are less than 2 feet high tend to be more effective when installed on the side of your house or building. One of the most important factors in a successful bat house occupancy is the internal roosting temperature of the bat house. And your building/house would act like a heat sink which would help regulate the internal temperate of the bat house. Hope that helps. Please feel free to reach back out anytime if there are any other questions I can assist with. Have a nice day :) Rebecca
Question: How many bats will it hold
Answer: I have not installed this yet, but for what I have read about bat houses this can hold over 200 bats. I know, it seems crazy like a lot...we’ll see.
Question: We live in Florida. Do you recommend the black or brown for our climate
Answer: Hi there! Rebecca here from customer service :) The brown color bat house is more suitable for the Florida region climate (based on the Bat Conservation International's recommendation). The black bat house would retain more heat than the bats in your area would be comfortable with. Hope that helps!

    High Quality

Made from western cedar wood that weathers well and is naturally resistant to rot and insects. This bat box is also constructed in a way that will make it last longer than similar products. Tip: the right house color will provide the roost temperature that bats need in your area, so make sure you select a bat house color according to your location in the provided map.

    No Corners Cut

We use a dado-style construction for the joints to keep the chambers dark and dry. We also assemble the bat house with decking screws instead of nails because otherwise it is only a matter of time until the weather separates the nails- leaving the chambers exposed, and rendering the bat house an unsuitable roosting choice for bats.

    Easy to Install

All of our bat houses come with exterior-grade mounting hardware. Watch the short video we put together with basic instructions on how to prepare your bat house for mounting. Remember the following important tips:

    • Avoid installing your bat house on a tree
    • Mount it at least 10 to 12 feet above ground
    • Pick a spot where it can receive at least 7 hours of direct sunlight

Enjoy a Richer and More Balanced Soil

Bat droppings (guano) are a powerful natural fungicide that help cleans out toxins from your soil while enriching it with valuable nutrients and improving its texture and drainage. As a fertilizer, guano also helps keep your plants green while strengthening the roots and stems! Tip: use a shallow tray underneath the bat house to collect the droppings, and use protective gloves while handling guano to safeguard your health.

    Earth Conscious

The wood used in making this bat house is 100% FSC (SAI, 2019). That means it is sourced from a forest that is managed with consideration for people and wildlife.

    Support Bat Populations

We are beyond excited that you will be supporting bats in your area by giving them a home! And so we created a free guide for you with the 5 tried and proven methods to attract bats and keep them coming back, and none of them include using bat guano or a bat attractant spray because, according to MTBC and BCI, they simply don’t work! Life of Mammals, The (DVD) (Digipack)

In ten parts, the award-winning David Attenborough (2002 Emmy winner for The Blue Planet: Seas of Life; The Life of Birds) introduces us to the most diverse group of animals ever to live on Earth, from the smallest - the two-inch pygmy shrew, to the largest - the blue whale; from the slowest - the sloth, to the swiftest - the cheetah; from the least attractive - the naked mole rat, to the most irresistible - a human baby. The Life of Mammals is the story of 4,000 species that have outlived the dinosaurs and conquered the farthest places on earth. With bodies kept warm by thick coats of fur and their developing young protected and nourished within their bodies, they have managed to colonize every part of the globe, dry or wet, hot or cold. Their adaptations for finding food have also had a profound effect on the way they move, socialize, mate and breed.

    User questions & answers

Question: I've read that the cedar needs to be aired out because bats do not like woods with strong scents. Has this already been aired out
Answer: I purchased this item but had to return as the light wouldn't mount up to the flagpole I was using, Sorry I couldn't be of more help:(
Question: There any time that’s better to put a house up to try n get bats or it just whenever cause will take a while anyways
Answer: The light has a 1/2" hole thru the center, which the bolt from the ball goes thru. So it doesn't matter the diameter of the pole, just that you need to have a 1/2" threaded hole in the top of the pole.
Question: Will this box need to be painted or treated in any way to prevent rot
    Answer: Very bright white
Question: If wasps move in, what is the best way to remove them? I assume that the canned spray would not be good for bats even after a period of time
Answer: It seams to work well with any flag pole that has a 1/4" threaded ball or eagle on the top.

    User questions & answers

Question: What is the range of the bats ( i.e. how far around the bathouse will they eat bugs
Answer: When I opened the box containing the bat shelter, I was worried that it wasn't really made of cedar...that's how little of the scent remained. Even if you do smell cedar, it'll take some time for the bats to find the shelter...by then, any scent that did exist will have disappeared. Hope that helps.
Question: What do the colors do
Answer: I installed my bat house over a year ago and still no bats have taken up residence. But sometimes it takes along time. We have bats flying around at night so they do live in the area. A wildlife site suggests the following: Place the house in full sun, preferably on its own pole; the next-best location is on the southern side of a building in full sun. The optimal temperature range is between 85 and 104 degrees F. Don't put it on a tree, as it will be in too much shade and too close to perch sites used by hawks and owls. Keep the area around the entrance clear of obstructions for 20 feet. If you live west of the Cascades, bat houses should be painted with multiple coats of flat black exterior latex paint and placed where they will receive full sun.
Question: Currently have many bats roosting behind my dark green/black shutters. Should I order black? Map says order dark brown
Answer: The bat house doesn't need to be painted. In fact it's recommended that you don't paint it. Our's still looks new after a year and a half.
    Question: How high up
Answer: I have had great success with getting rid of wasp nests by getting up about dawn and using a very strong spray of water from a hose. It will destroy the nest and the wasps that drop straight down to the ground will be moving very slowly in cool morning air. Plenty of time to walk away.
